Flameout – Chapter 8

Ace couldn't believe it when he picked up the toy rocket and saw that it matched the unidentified piece of debris from Jane's F-16. He was so excited. He immediately took the toy and after kissing his family good bye he went back to the hanger that the accident investigation team was working out of. The accident investigation team was so excited that Ace had figured out what the unidentified debris pieces were. Once he compared the remaining unidentified debris pieces to the toy rocket, he identified that they also belonged to the toy rocket.

The team chief walked over and gave Ace a side hug and told him, "Thank you, Ace, you have single handedly provided a vital piece of information to this team. We appreciate your resolve to assist us in our efforts to determine what happened to Copper's F-16. Can we take this toy apart? It would save us time in having to go purchase a few of these toy rockets. Of course, we will replace it, but for now it would speed up our investigation."

"Yes, and thank you, however, my wife and sons have already planned to go to the store to purchase a replacement rocket. My sons both love rockets and love how realistic these miniature rockets are."

The team chief patted him on the back and then appointed a few individuals to take the toy rocket apart and match up the pieces to verify that they truly had correctly identified the unidentified debris pieces. They had a whole different course of action to pursue now. They had to figure out how Jane's F-16 came into contact with a toy rocket.

"Sir, is it okay if I notify Frost, Copper's BPD counterpart? I know details of the investigation are to be kept secret, but I am sure it would bring Copper some relief."

"Yes, that is fine, Ace. I am going to call Colonel Noble right now and let him know while a version of the preliminary report is completed. I am sure Copper would want to know. Please know we still have to figure out how the F-16 came in contact with the toy rocket. I am sure our team will figure it all out soon."

Amelia took her time to evaluate Jane. She was curious. She had heard of this type of condition but had never dealt with a patient that presented those symptoms. She used her pen light to check Jane's eyes. She noticed that Jane squinted when the light shined in her eyes.

After a quick examination she needed to ask Jane a series of questions. For that part of the examination, she needed to be alone with Jane. She asked if everyone could leave the room so she could continue her examination of her patient. After the room was cleared, Amelia started asking Jane her questions. Jane answered the questions as truthfully as she could.

Amelia pulled up a chair and sat beside Jane's bed. She wanted Jane to be as comfortable as possible. Amelia had looked over her list of questions and had crossed out or filled in the answers to the questions she already knew the answers to. She asked her first question, "How often are you experiencing the visions?"

Jane closed her eyes and then took a deep breath before answering, "Every time I close my eyes. I have the dreams."

"How long do the dreams last?" Amelia caught on to the fact that Jane was calling her visions dreams so to keep Jane at ease, she also used the term dreams.

"I am not sure, sometimes I only have my eyes closed for a few minutes, and the dreams appear. Sometimes when I am sleeping, I have a dream but I do not know how long the dream was."

"Have you ever experienced dreams like this before?"

"Not that I remember. The dreams that I remember from before my accident were normally just continuation of the day's events, they never contained anything in the future. I never realy dreamt about the future."

"Did anything happen that you believe triggered your dreams?"

"When Doctor Isles held up my hand to treat my wrist, that was the first time I remember having a futuristic type of dream. I dreamt about her and her two children. It kinda freaked me out because I had just met her. I didn't know anything about her except how beautiful and intelligent she was." Jane smiled as she said this. Amelia noticed that her smile grew as she spoke of Maura.

"Do you have any other symptoms along with your dreams, such as headaches, changes in mood, etc.?"

Jane laughed as she informed her, "Duh, doc, I do have headaches but I did injure my head in the crash."

"Yes, I am aware that you injured your head, Jane." Amelia smiled and continued to write on her clipboard. She continued her questions.

Later after everybody came back in the room. Nina stepped forward and whispered in Amelia's ear, "Don't forget about the increased heart rate, each time Maura enters the room." They both smiled and looked at Jane and then Maura and started laughing quietly. Nina had seen the list of questions that Amelia was going to ask Jane and knew that she had to share that bit of information with Amelia.

Before Amelia could respond, Jane asked, "What are you two laughing about?" Gen came over and stood by Jane after seeing the concerned look on Jane's face.

Nina replied, "You, Jane."

"Are you allowed to tease your patients like this?"

"Not really, but I feel so comfortable teasing you, I don't know what it is about you. I feel like we have known each other for a long time."

"Yes, I do feel at ease with you three doctors." Jane admitted. "I normally do not like doctors. They have been a pain in my butt in the past."

Gen smiled as she told Jane, "that is how I felt when I first met you as well, you were a pain in my butt. Jane, please let the doctors finish their examination." Everyone laughed at what Gen had just told Jane. Jane just turned and gave Gen a look. The atmosphere in the room was light and not at all like any other time that Jane had been in the hospital.

As Amelia was almost finished with her examination, she noticed that Jane was watching Maura and what she was doing. Maura was carefully testing the dexterity of Jane's fingers on her right hand. Jane's right wrist would have to remain in a cast for another three weeks but Maura wanted to check the dexterity now that the swelling had gone down some more. She would need to recast the wrist Monday or Tuesday when the swelling was completely gone. Amelia observed Jane observing Maura. She smiled inside, Jane was truly interested in Maura.

Amelia had one last item on her checklist and then she would be finished examining Jane. "I need to examine your tongue, can you please stick your tongue out for me?"

Jane was a little taken back when Amelia told her that she needed to examine her tongue. "Why do you need to examine my tongue?" Jane questioned.

Without thinking Maura replied answering Jane's question, "The tongue is controlled by several cranial nerves, and observing its movement can provide information about potential neurological issues."

"Thank you, Doctor Isles." Amelia said as she smiled and glanced at her friend. "As always you are a wealth of knowledge."

"I am sorry Amelia, I can't help myself sometimes." Maura stated as she looked over at Amelia as she picked up Jane's right hand so that she could examine her fingers and broken wrist. Jane's heart rate increased as Maura picked up her hand. As soon as Maura touched her, she felt a slight electric shock.

She briefly closed her eyes and had a vision of Maura taking her hand so that they could dance. Jane tried to concentrate on where they were and what was happening. They were chaperoning a school dance for Maura's daughter. She could vividly see the students all standing around in their friend groups acting like they would catch fire if they danced with each other, so Jane asked Maura to dance in hopes of getting the students to dance.

Frost and Gen were observing Jane's reactions to Maura and smiling at each other. All activities in the room stopped as Frost's cell phone rang. "Hey Ace, what's up?" Frost asked.

"I was able to help the accident investigation team identify the unidentified debris pieces."

"Really, what are they?" Frost asked he was curious he wished that Ace would hurry up and tell him.

"Pieces of a toy rocket." Ace replied, knowing that Frost would think he was joking.

"A toy rocket, really?" Frost questioned thinking that Ace was toying with him.

"Yes, Frost, it looks as if a toy rocket was engulfed by Jane's engine and caused the flameout."

"Wow, let me tell Jane. She has been wondering what caused her engine to flameout." Jane perked up at this statement, she was eager to find out what Frost had learned.

Jane had asked her mother not to come to the hospital until after lunch as she knew the doctors would need to run tests and examine her. Angela wasn't too happy about that but she complied with her daughter's wishes.

Frost was just about to tell Jane what Ace said when Angela, Frankie and Tommy walked in her room. Everyone's attention turned to the door. Angela immediately went to Jane and hugged her, she stepped back and then Frankie handed Jane a few pieces of paper. Jane glanced down at them. "Wow, that was fast. How did you get this done on a Sunday?" Jane was excited. If those two women came near her again, they would be arrested. For good measure Frankie had asked that a restraining order also be issued for Mark, Nikki's boyfriend.

"When the Chief of Police knows the judges golf schedule, it helps." They all laughed and then Frankie continued, "Okay, the Chief was golfing with the judge and his executive officer rushed the paperwork through and brought it to the golf course for the judge to sign. The judge signed it and the executive officer had it filed and provided me with copies. They were both served about half an hour ago."

"That is the fastest I have ever seen restraining orders issued." Jane stated as she hugged her brother. Maura was still holding Jane's hand while Jane tried to hug her brother with her other arm. Maura quickly released Jane's hand and moved to the chairs with Gen and Frost while Frankie and Jane talked about the restraining orders.

When Frost noticed that the conversation was dying down, he moved over to Jane so he could tell her what Ace had said. "So, Ace has been working with the accident investigation team and he found out what caused your engine to flame out."

"What is it, Frost? What did he say?"

"It was a toy rocket."

"What the hell is this?" Nikki said as her lawyer visited her in jail and served her with the restraining order. She was pissed as hell. "How did this get pushed through so fast?"

Brian, who was so pissed at Nikki for her antics in Syracuse told her, "Well, Jane Rizzoli is a highly decorated police officer and F-16 fighter pilot. The Syracuse Chief of Police personally had the judge sign the restraining order."

"Can you get me out of here?"

"I can get you out Monday morning at the earliest. Monday afternoon at the latest."

"Why not today?"

"It is Sunday Nikki, the offices are closed until Monday morning."

"Well, they seem to work when it comes to processing this restraining order." Nikki said as she threw the restraining order on the table.

Brian figured his job was done for the day and got up and said his goodbye to Nikki. "Nikki, I am going back to my hotel room, I have a meeting with Scott."

Stella was at her apartment sitting at her dining room table researching about Nikki on her computer when she was served with her restraining order. She was a little more pissed than Nikki. Stella wanted to be with Jane. She didn't want to stop seeing Jane. This Nikki woman had to be taken out of the picture and she would see to it. Stella truly believed that she was a better person all around than Nikki. Nikki had been engaged to Jane so she too could be engaged to Jane. She just had to figure out what she needed to do to make that happen. She needed a plan to make Jane fall in love with her. First though she had to get rid of Nikki for good.

Stella was so focused on Jane, she forgot all about work. Her coworker Steve had been trying to reach her but Stella had been ignoring his calls. Steve had no choice but to go to his supervisor about Stella's behavior and lack of professionalism at work. Stella had left her shift on Saturday and had not shown up on Sunday. They were understaffed as it was and with Stella missing shifts, he had to let it be known to his superiors. He couldn't cover for her. The ambulance needed two EMTs.

When Maura finished her examination, she noted the chart and said goodbye to everyone. The room was too crowded for her. She needed to get back to the peace and quiet of her office. She didn't understand what was happening to her. She had never been so flustered by a patient before. Maybe she needed to hand Jane's care off to another doctor.

She decided to go home and check on her children. She also wanted to see what kind of rockets Charlie played with. She knew Charlie loved rockets and she wanted to learn more about them and try and understand how a children's toy rocket could take out a multi-million-dollar fighter jet.

Amelia was surprised that Maura had left but then figured maybe it was for the best. She knew that her friend was emotional and there were quite a few people in the room. Many with very strong personalities. She herself wished that everyone would leave but she had finished her examination and she could now leave as well. She told Jane, "I need to look into a few things. I will be back later to discuss my findings with you. Please try and get some sleep. If your family and friends get to be too much, please ask them to leave. Your health is more important than them visiting with you."

"Yes, thank you, Dr. Sheppard. I will heed your advice."

Amelia turned to Nina, "I am leaving now. Please keep an eye on Maura. I will be back later. I need to check into a few things."

"I think I will leave now also. Please let me know what you figure out."

"I will, goodbye Nina." With that both doctors walked out.

They went by Maura's office and saw her locking her door. Amelia asked, "Leaving already?"

"I decided I was going to take a break and go home and have lunch with my children."

"Oh yes, that makes sense. Enjoy your break. We will chat later about my theories and a possible course of action for Captain Rizzoli." Amelia informed Maura.

"That sounds good, just let me know." Maura said as she said goodbye to her fellow doctors. She didn't want to talk about Jane right now.

Thirty minutes after the doctors left, Jane called Gen and Frost over, "Hey, can you two maybe ask everyone to leave, including my mother? I need to close my eyes and get some sleep. I want you to stay, we need to talk."

"Okay," Gen replied and then walked over to the group of gathered friends and family, "We need to leave Jane's room at this time. You may return for small visits, no more than two people at a time at 6 PM. We must remember that Jane is suffering from a head injury and she needs her rest."

Jane couldn't believe how calm and cool her friend was at basically ordering her family and friends around, but then she was a police chief and she was trained to deal with her staff. Frost was also impressed. They both were lucky to consider Gen as a friend, and not just their boss.

After a few minutes and a tantrum from her mother, everyone left. Frankie raised his hand up and gave Frost the hand motion to call him as he escorted his mother and brother from the room. Several of Jane's pilot friends had stopped by and they waved to Jane as they left. She waved back and was thankful when the room was emptied out.

"I wanted to talk to the two of you. I want to get back to Boston as soon as I can. I want to start my physical therapy plan the minute I am able to and get back on the job as soon as possible. Gen, can you check to see at what point can I return to desk duty? I don't want to wait until my leg is totally healed as that could be months. Frost can you see that my mustang gets back to Boston? I don't want to leave it here. I know it is safe on the base but I would feel better if it was in my garage in Boston. I don't want anybody but the two of you driving it. I know you brought your unmarked here but maybe you two can figure something out being as there are two of you and two vehicles to return to Boston."

They both looked at Jane and told her, "Yes."

Gen then asked, "Which doctor has the final say on your release date?"

"Doctor Isles is my doctor of record. Doctors Holiday and Sheppard are merely consulting care doctors. Doctor Isles seems a little frazzled at the moment. I think she is taken back by my dreams of her and her children. I need to find a way to ease that situation. Maybe I shouldn't talk about my dreams in front of her."

Jane paused and then continued, "I really do need to close my eyes for a few minutes. I have such a headache right now. My leg and my arm are also hurting."

"Maybe, you should take some of your pain meds, Jane?" Gen suggested.

"I don't want to get addicted to pain meds Gen, you know the affect pain meds have had on some of our own and I do not want to rely on them."

"I do understand Jane, but you can take just a small amount to take the edge off as they say and not get addicted. I have read up on the reports small doses are okay. The things I have to read about as chief."

"Okay, let me push the button and call the nurse."

"You don't have to do that Jane. All you have to do to give yourself some pain meds is push this button right here." Frost showed her the button. "I remember the nurse telling you that a full dose of pain meds would be four pushes. So, if you push the button once, you would receive the smallest dose of pain meds, which equals one fourth of what the doctor had recommended. Doctor Isles made sure your wishes were taken into account and made sure that you could dictate the amount of any dose of pain meds that were to be given to you."

Jane pushed the button once as she continued talking to Gen and Frost. Within five minutes Jane was out cold. Gen and Frost went over by the window and started working on what Jane had called 'her escape plan.' Jane wanted to leave Syracuse as soon as she could and she need their help to make that happen.
