Chapter 211: Chihaya and Jugo's Matchmaking Party, Part One
Time passes...
"What?" Mouri exclaimed, he, Ran and Conan were blocked out from the Bal Masqué restaurant. "You're fully booked today for a party?"
"Yes we are." the restaurant's receptionist apologized.
"Take a look at these vouchers I won at a lottery." Mouri insisted. "It says here they're good through Sunday today."
"Wait a minute, Dad." Ran twitched. "We have the day off because it's a make-up holiday, but it's Monday today. Anyway, I wonder what that party is for." she wondered as Mouri searched through his smartphone for a restaurant to have lunch.
"It says here it's a matchmaking masquerade." Conan read the signboard.
After lunch, the trio returned to the restaurant after Mouri realized he had dropped his house keys at the restaurant's front door when they heard a horrified scream from the restaurant.
In the side room...
"Someone... someone's dead." a waitress gasped in the main hall as Conan dashed to the crime scene with Mouri and Ran in tow.
"Don't touch the body." Conan warned, seeing Inspector Yokomizo holding onto Anju Tomari's dead body.
"You're the kid with the glasses." the Inspector exclaimed. "What are you doing here?"
"Inspector Yokomizo?" Conan blinked after the Inspector removed his mask.
"It wasn't just Jugo." Hagiwara Chihaya cut in.
"Chihaya-san, the motorcycle cop." Ran instantly recognized female traffic officer.
After Megure's team was called in...
"So, the victim is Anju Tomari-san, 30 years old." Takagi referred to his notes. "A participant of the matchmaking masquerade being held at this restaurant."
The weapon is most likely the gun inside the plastic bag on the table." Ami added. "She died instantly when she was shot directly in the heart."
'She is one of the two women who were popular at the party." Takagi supplied. "The four men she chose were invited into this room to chat with her for ten minutes. Additionally, the other popular woman was Kanagawa Police Division Mobile Traffic Unit Commander, Hagiwara Chihaya, who happened to attend the party. And one of the four men chosen by the victim was Kanagawa Police Investigation Division 1, Inspector Yokomizo Juzo, who also happened to be attending the party. The other three are the men behind him wearing masks."
"Inspector Yokomizo, you were the fourth to enter the room." Megure stated.
"I saw the body right after I entered the room." Inspector Yokomizo confirmed. "So I had the female staff member in the hallway call the police and seal the exits."
"Then, the killer is one of you three who entered the room before Inspector Yokomizo." Sato concluded. "Now, can you remove your masks in the order you entered and state your names and professions?"
"If the suspect used a gloved hand to hold the silenced gun and put that inside a plastic bag, tied off at the wrist, we're unlikely to detect any gunshot residue." Megure noted. "If Inspector Yokomizo, who entered last, couldn't have done it, then we needn't look for any. You entered the room right before him, Enzaki-san." he turned to Enzaki Genji. "You're the only one who could've done it."
"Look underneath the table." Conan crawled under the cover table.
"Did you find something?" Sato also crawled in.
"There are three pieces of confetti under the table." Conan shone the flashlight on his Stun-Gun Wristwatch. "I passed through the party hall on my way here and there was a lot of similar confetti on the floor. Did you set off a party cracker when the party started?" he asked.
"All the participants set off crackers." Inspector Yokomizo nodded.
"If the confetti now beneath the table was stuck to someone's body..." Megure started.
"Does that mean someone was hiding under the table?" Sato wondered.
"Is this what you mean, kid?" Chihaya realized what Conan was implying. "So, even if the first two men to enter the room could have hidden under the table, threatened the victim with the gun and made her talk to whoever entered the room right after himself. And after the next man finished their conversation and left, the culprit could have shot the victim, rang the bell to invite the next man in and left the room quickly, allowing him to avoid suspicion."
"The victim wouldn't have known if the gun was real or not." Mouri pointed out.
"The culprit fired a warning shot to prove that the gun was genuine." Ami corrected, locating an additional bullet hole in the wall. "Take a good look to the right of the blood splatter on the wall. Notice there's a second bullet hole other than the one that killed the victim."
"But if whoever entered the room didn't come out, wouldn't people know something was off?" Megure was puzzled, as Ami bagged the discharged bullet as evidence.
"Although we all entered the room through this door, we exited through the door over there." Inspector Yokomizo pointed to the other door in the back. "When you exit into the adjacent room, you briefly meet up with the men exiting Chihaya's room. Since each man has only about ten minutes to chat, it wouldn't the strange not to run into anyone. Even if you did see someone, practically everyone is wearing a suit and mask, so it'd be difficult to identify anyone. Besides, the men Chihaya chose didn't seen to stay in the room for very long."
"It seems any one of you could have done it." Megure addressed the three suspects after hearing Inspector Yokomizo's analysis.
"We'll be questioning each of you in a different room." Sato declared.
"Inspector Yokomizo, could you join us for the interviews?" Megure requested as Ami had her team bring the body for autopsy.
"Come to think of it, before you arrived, I overheard a strange conversation in the party hall." Inspector Yokomizo recalled. "The victim arrived in front of the restaurant fairly early, but she remained standing in the rain outside for a while."
