Threads of Destiny
Chapter 26: Heroes on Both Sides
Cross the Galaxy, the quagmire of War continues!
While Clone Troopers suffer casualties at alarming rates
The Galactic Senate convenes an emergency session to debate the true cost of the War.
In the Galactic Senate Building...
With the clone army being gradually decimated in battle and the Separatists gaining ground, several members of the Senate plead for financing of more troops and deregulation of the Banking Clan that were the very topics which divided the Senate as the War funds were practically exhausted and would effectively drag on the War even longer.
Anakin, Ahsoka, Nadia and Ferus were together as they were listening to the Senators argue with each other.
"Order! Order!"Mas Amedda demanded."Let Senator Saam finish!"
"This is a matter not of philosophy."Senator Saam continued."More troops are needed, the Republic cannot afford to let the Separatists and the Sith gain anymore ground."
"Our military leaders inform us that troops in the field continue to perform valiantly."Bail exclaimed."What we cannot afford, is to be irresponsible. The Republic is near bankruptcy due to the cost of this war."
"Bankruptcy is not necessary, my friends."Lott Dod admitted."If we pass Senator Saam's bill to open new lines of credit, we will gain access to the needed funds."
"Won't this bill essentially deregulate the Banks?"Mon Mothma asked with a frown.
"A small price to pay to finance the War, is it not?"Senator Burtoni questioned.
A few Senators agreed with Senator Saam's bill and shouted to keep the Clone Wars going.
"Members of the Senate!"Padme called out as she moved her pod next to Bail's."Do you hear yourselves? More money, more clones and more war say nothing of fiscal responsibility. What about moral responsibility? Hasn't this war gone on long enough?"
"Senator Amidala, are you suggesting we surrender to the Separatists and the Sith?"Senator Saam asked.
"Of course not."Padme replied with a stern yet soft tone."But negotiation might be a better course of action."
"You can't negotiate with those animals!"Senator Mot-Not Rab protested."Keep the War going, vote now!"
The Senators started chanting 'Vote now!'.
"Members of the Senate, I suggest we table any emergency bill until it is determined whether or not deregulation is the right course of action."Bail admitted.
"Very well."Mas Amedda replied."We shall let calmer heads prevail."
After the meeting ended, Padme met up with Anakin, Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia at the hallway of the Galactic Senate Building.
Padme glanced at her husband.
"You must ask Obi-Wan and the Jedi Council to speak with Chancellor Palpatine."Padme suggested.
"Don't involve me in this."Anakin stated.
"A peaceful solution is the only way out of this morass of war."Padme admitted.
"That's not my role, Padme."Anakin replied.
"Why not? Why isn't it your role?"Ahsoka argued."Aren't we Jedi? Isn't it our duty to speak our minds to advise Chancellor Palpatine?"
Anakin looked at his beloved wife.
"Uh, I suggest you teach Obi-Wan's and my young Padawan a thing or two about politics."Anakin suggested.
"After today's debate, I was hoping they learned a great deal."Padme replied.
"Truthfully, I don't understand any of it."Nadia admitted, earning everyone's attention."I know the Separatists are evil like the Sith but everyone in the Senate only argued about banking deregulation, interest rates and almost nothing about why we're fighting in the first place. None of it makes sense."
"War's complicated, Dia."Anakin replied."Let me simplify it, the Separatists believe the Republic is corrupt and the Jedi Order is evil, but they're wrong and we have to restore peace and justice to the galaxy."
Ferus nodded at his brother-in-law.
"That's obviously true."Ferus admitted."And you seem to have forgotten to mention that we're trying to bring Count Dooku to justice since he's a Sith Lord and one of our best clues to finding his Master."
Padme let out a sigh.
"Maybe talking to the Jedi Council isn't the role for you after all."Padme commented. "Thanks for your help. Come on, Ahsoka and Nadia."
Padme, Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia started walking away from Anakin.
"Hey."Anakin sneered.
"You told me to teach them about politics."Padme reminded."So I'm going too."
Ahsoka and Nadia smirked at Anakin as they followed Padme and Ferus.
Later that Evening…
In her own office, Padme told Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia that she intends to visit Senator Mina Bonteri, her old friend and mentor who had joined the Separatists.
"If only I could talk to Senator Bonteri."Padme said.
"Your old mentor from Onderon?"Ferus asked.
"Who's he?"Ahsoka asked.
"He is a she, a Senator in the Confederacy of Independent Systems."Padme exclaimed.
Nadia raised an eyebrow at Padme.
"Your friend is a Separatist?"Nadia asked in disbelief."One of Count Dooku's pawns?"
"The Separatists used to be part of the Republic."Padme explained."I was close with many of the Senators who left, I may not agree with them, but they're more than Count Dooku's pawns."
"Sis, if you think negotiating is the right thing to do, let's talk to her."Ferus admitted.
"The Senate's made it illegal."Padme replied.
"Illegal?"Ahsoka questioned.
"They say official meetings would only legitimize the Separatists."Padme stated.
"Well, Master Skywalker and I hold what we call aggressive negotiations all the time."Ahsoka complemented.
"Same with me and Master Kenobi."Nadia agreed and let out a scoff."It's a shame you can't hold more peaceful talks, when you want."
This caused an idea to form in Padme's head.
"You two just gave me an idea."Padme admitted.
Surprised looks appeared on Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia's faces.
"Really?"Ahsoka asked.
"You three are Jedi, which gives you special clearance."Padme commented."And Jedi are allowed to travel to neutral worlds like Mandalore, where we could then board a cargo ship to a Separatist System."
Ferus looked at his older sister.
"Are you suggesting we use our status as Jedi to smuggle you behind enemy lines, big sis?"Ferus assumed with a smirk.
"It's just that you could get us through to meet with her and I haven't seen her or her family in so long."Padme responded.
"Relax."Nadia chuckled."We'll help you besides, Master Skywalker said you should teach me and Soka about politics."
Ferus chuckled. "That is true."
Ahsoka smiled at Padme.
"You know, you two have more in common than you think."Ahsoka admitted."It's no wonder you get along."
"Very well if ask you me."Nadia sneered teasingly.
Padme became a bit nervous while Ferus slightly cleared his throat.
"Huh, of course."Padme answered.
"So where are we heading?"Ahsoka asked.
"Raxus."Padme responded.
A Few Hours Later...
After a quick stop on Mandalore, Padme and the three Jedi were on a Gozanti Cruiser flying over Raxus capital, Raxulon and towards the Separatist Senate Building.
Padmé wore a dress that was orange on both sides with a yellow stripe running down the middle. The dress had a high neckline in the same yellow colour as well as a tan hood to conceal her face. She also wore orange handless gloves that went up to her elbow and an orange sash around her waist. There were also lighter yellow stripes on the neckline, the hem of her sleeves and on the hem of her gloves. Her chocolate brown hair was tied up in a ponytail with the lower half folded up and put in a bun with a gold band. Around her neck, she wore a necklace of rectangular yellow beads on a brown cord.
Ferus wore dark grey clothing and sprayed the white streak in his hair brown.
Ahsoka wore a white hooded robe and Nadia wore a hooded green robe with red designs on it.
The group grabbed their suitcases before exiting the ship with a few other passengers.
"Move along, please, move along."A battle droid instructed.
Padme, Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia started walking away as the battle droid glanced at another passenger.
"Identification, please."A battle droid ordered.
Senator Amidala and the three Jedi walked around the battle droids.
Another droid was about to approach them when a woman stopped it.
"Excuse me, is this Platform B?"the woman asked.
A woman with short blonde hair walked up to the four companions and led them away.
"This way."the woman said quietly.
The small group walked up to Mina as she turned around to greet them with a smile on her face.
"Hello, old friends."Mina greeted.
Ferus smiled at Mina.
"Hello, Senator Bonteri."Ferus replied with a wave."It's good to see you again."
Padme introduced Mina to Ahsoka and Nadia.
"Ahsoka and Nadia, this is Mina Bonteri."Padme exclaimed."She was my mentor when I was growing up on Naboo."
"Nice to meet you, ma'am."Nadia said kindly.
"You're a Separatist?"Ahsoka asked with a small frown.
"Well, of course, my dear, what were you expecting?"Mina asked."Now, come, I have a shuttle waiting."
Padme and the three Jedi then started following Mina and her maids to her shuttle.
A While Later...
The group arrived at Mina's home in her private H-2 executive shuttle once it landed.
Mina's home was a palatial estate.
The group exited the shuttle and the three Jedi notice a dark brown haired boy around their age wearing light blue clothing and leaning against a lamp post at the top of the stairs leading into the house and watching them.
He was Lux Bonteri; Mina's son and Ferus' best friend.
"Lux!"Mina called out."Come down here and help our guests with their luggage, please!"
Lux pushed off the post and started waking down the steps.
Mina gives Padme a hug.
"Padme, it's so good to see you."Mina remarked.
"Yes."Padme agreed."How things have changed since the last time we met."
"Let's go inside."Mina instructed."There's much to discuss."
"Please, allow me."Lux insisted.
Lux walked up to them as Padme handed the suitcase to him before the two women continued walking.
Ferus gave Lux a short wave while he and Nadia followed the two Senators.
Lux looked at Ahsoka.
"May I?"Lux assured.
"I can handle it."Ahsoka replied.
Ahsoka held her suitcase before she continued walking to follow after her companions.
Inside Mina's Home...
Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia stood near the door as Mina walked forward with two cocktail glasses in her hand.
Nadia was impressed to see the inside of the building looked like.
It was just like living in a castle.
Padme glanced at the window to see Lux sitting by himself in the garden in deep thought.
"He's grown so much, Mina."Padme complemented.
"Time won't stop, even if we are at war."Mina replied as she handed Padme a cocktail beverage."And I'm afraid the events are shaping his young life."
"With all due respect, as a Separatist, didn't you create this war?"Ahsoka questioned.
"Ahsoka!"Ferus snapped.
"It's all right, Ferus."Mina assured and looked at Ahsoka."That's a very polarized point of view, my dear, would it surprise you to know that many of the people you call Separatists feel the same way about the Republic and the Jedi Order? Lux's father was like that."
"Maybe we could speak with him."Ahsoka suggested.
"If only you could."Mina replied with a hint of sadness."A year ago, he was setting up a base on Aargonar when clones attacked. My husband fought bravely in self-defence...but was killed."
Padme and Ferus looked at Mina quietly while Nadia looked down in thought.
"Excuse me."Ahsoka spoke up."I think I'll get some air."
Ahsoka then left the room causing Ferus and Nadia to look at Mina and Padme.
"It's okay if me and Nadia leave to get some air too, Senator Bonteri?"Ferus suggested.
"Go ahead, Ferus."Mina insisted."You were always happier outside than inside."
Ferus nodded before he and Nadia walked out of the building as well.
Mina glanced at Padme.
"Lux and I can't believe your little brother had a growth spurt into a stupendous Jedi Knight, Padme."Mina complemented.
Padme let out a sigh.
"Yes. He has, Mina."Padme agreed."But like Lux, this war is shaping him too quickly."
Afterwards...
Nadia went to have a walk around the garden, where she was admiring the trees and the fresh air.
Despite their differences, Raxus seemed so peaceful like Corellia.
Ferus walked over to Nadia.
"You're reminding me a lot of my sister more than I thought, Dia."Ferus complemented.
"Why do you say that, Ferus?"Nadia questioned.
"She loves to go walking in the garden back in Naboo."Ferus admitted.
"That's nice to hear."Nadia said simply.
"So are you enjoying the moment?"Ferus asked.
"Yeah, Raxus reminds me a bit of my homeplanet Corellia."Nadia declared."And we say 'The bigger the galaxy, the sweeter the homecoming."
"Nice."Ferus chuckled."Sounds a lot like Bellassa."
"Bellassa?"Nadia asked.
"Yeah. It's a thriving and peaceful world and my homeworld of where my mother gave birth to me."Ferus explained."The capital was Ussa and is a pleasant city with seven large tranquil lakes."
Nadia chuckled as she and Ferus sat down against a tree.
"Sounds great."Nadia suggested."It would be nice to go there in peaceful times."
Ferus let out a sad sigh.
"I don't think it would be possible for us Jedi."Ferus said.
"Hey. Anything is possible."Nadia sneered before her smile vanished and looked down."We just have to somehow make the impossible into the possible."
Ferus picked up a daisy placed it on her hair and stroked her cheek.
"Hey, when I look at you, I only see the good not the bad."He said.
Nadia blushed and smiled at him.
"Ferus, I'm going to do something so don't freak out, okay?"Nadia instructed.
"Okay."Ferus replied.
Nadia took a deep breath and put her hands on Ferus' face as she gently pulled him in close and kissed him on the lips.
To say Ferus was surprised was an understatement since his eyes widened but then he closed them as he wrapped his arms around Nadia and returned it.
The teenagers' kiss lasted a bit longer until they broke away for air and smiled at each other.
"I love you, Ferus."Nadia declared."I've had my feelings for you for a long time."
Ferus smiled shyly at Nadia's words.
"I love you too, Nadia."Ferus admitted."Do you want to be my girlfriend?"
Nadia chuckled. "Absolutely."
Nadia pulled her new boyfriend into another kiss which he immediately returns.
Now that the two Jedi are finally together, they felt the holes in their hearts from their dark pasts have finally been filled.
Meanwhile...
Ahsoka walked down the the steps leading to the yard and noticed Lux sitting on the stone railing.
"You're a Jedi, aren't you?"Lux assumed.
Ahsoka stopped near the bottom and turned to face him.
"Yes, why do you ask?"Ahsoka asked.
"Before the War, I was always told the Jedi were good."Lux replied.
"And now?"Ahsoka questioned.
Lux hopped off the railing and onto the steps.
"I don't know anymore."Lux admitted before joining Ahsoka as they walked down the remaining steps."There are a lot of terrible things happening, a lot of killing and now my friends are saying the Jedi are to blame."
"Ferus, Nadia and I are some of the first Jedi you ever met, aren't we?"Ahsoka asked.
"Well, um...yes."Lux admitted."Though I only know Ferus since we were small."
"Look at me."Ahsoka insisted."We're not so bad are we?"
Ahsoka crossed her arms and smirked at him.
Lux's eyes trailed from Ahsoka's boots and back to her eyes before he smiled.
"No."Lux answered."Not bad at all."
Ahsoka rolled her eyes at Lux's words.
"Ugh, well it seems boys are the same whether they're Republic or Separatist."Ahsoka retorted.
Ahsoka started to walk away as Lux catches up to her.
"Wait, how many Separatists have you and your friends met?"Lux asked.
"What?"Ahsoka questioned.
"Well, I mean, you think we're all the bad guys."Lux exclaimed."But how many of us have you, Ferus and Nadia actually met? And droids don't count."
"Well, other than major council members, warlords and assassins like Viceroy Gunray, General Grievous and Ventress."Ahsoka admitted."None I guess. You and your mother are the first."
"Well, look at me."Lux suggested with a smile."Am I so bad?"
Ahsoka didn't answer and just looked at the ground as they sat on the edge of the small fountain.
"No, you're not."Ahsoka replied."I can't say the same about Count Dooku, General Grievous, Ventress and the Separatist command structure because they're pawns of the Sith Order which is the ancient enemy of the Jedi Order."
Lux glanced at something in the distance which made him looked amused.
"What are you smiling about?"Ahsoka questioned.
"It looks like our best friends have started a relationship."Lux declared.
Ahsoka looks over and like Lux has a big smile on her face to see Nadia cuddling with Ferus.
Inside Mina's Home...
Padme continued speaking to Mina.
"I sense Count Dooku and his Master's dirty hands in all of this."Padme admitted.
"Count Dooku's just the Head of State of the Separatists."Mina responded."He's not the leader of the universe."
"Oh, I forgot."Padme said with a small frown."You actually admire Anakin's arch-nemesis and Qui-Gon's fallen Master."
"We'll never entirely agree on Count Dooku, my old friend, but we can agree on the need to stop this war."Mina admitted."The question is how."
"That's why it was so urgent that I speak with you."Padme declared."The Republic Senate is holding a critical vote to escalate the war effort however, many of the delegates are undecided as to what to do."
"How interesting."Mina complemented."You would find the Separatist parliament in a similar dilemma."
"I'm certain if you could convince your representatives to extend an olive branch of peace towards the Republic."Padme suggested."There might be enough sympathy in the Senate to finally open negotiations."
"I admire your spirit, Padme."Mina admitted."I can at least put the motion on the floor."
"Thank you, Mina."Padme thanked with a smile."That's all I ask."
Mina then raised her glass cup in toast.
"To peace, then?"Mina suggested
Padme noticed Lux talking to Ahsoka while she smiled see to her little brother finally got together with his special girl and then looked at Mina, while raising her cup.
"To hope."Padme declared.
In the Separatist Senate Building...
Senator Amidala and the three Jedi watched while remaining hidden as Mina attempted to persuade the other Senators for peace between them and the Republic.
A hologram of Count Dooku watched on.
"How many lives on both sides have to end before we see the futility?"Mina asked."Surely there's room in the galaxy for confederate and Republic planets to coexist. I move that we immediately open peace negotiations with Master Yoda and Chancellor Palpatine on Coruscant."
"The Corporate Alliance will never allow this to happen."A green-skined female Senator with four horns on her head retorted.
"This is a democracy"A alien man stated."And unlike the Republic, corporations do not rule us."
"Quiet."Count Dooku ordered, making the Senators go silent."In accordance with the by laws of Independent Systems, a voice vote is required. All in favour of initiating peace negotiations with the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic, say aye."
Mina and other three Senators say Aye.
Aye!"A Leyakian male agreed.
"Aye!"Bec Lawise agreed.
"Aye!"the alien man agreed.
"Aye!"Mina agreed.
A few more Senators from other planets agreed as well.
Count Dooku glanced at the other Senators for their responds.
"All those opposed?"Count Dooku asked.
"Nay!"the green horned woman disagreed.
"Nay!"A male amphibian species disagreed.
"The ayes have it."Count Dooku declared.
Mina smiled at Padme and the three hooded Jedi, who all smiled back at her.
It seemed that peace between the members of the Republic and the members of the Separatists were keeping to peaceful terms at last.
Afterwards...
It was time for Padme, Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia to leave.
"Well, this is goodbye."Padme stated with a small smile.
"I've been disappointed before and yet, I almost feel as if this time the tide has turned in the War."Mina informed and put Padme's hood up for her."You should hurry, goodbye, young ones. May the Force be with you and your friends, Ferus."
Ferus bowed at Mina.
"Thank you, Senator Bonteri."Ferus thanked with a nod."You and Lux as well."
"We look forward to seeing you two again."Nadia remarked.
Lux looked at Ahsoka.
"You really believe the Republic will vote for peace?"Lux asked.
"I hope so."Ahsoka said with a smile."I wouldn't want to meet you on the battlefield, for your sake."
Lux smiled back at Ahsoka with a hint of admiration.
"Go, you four, quickly."Mina instructed.
Senator Amidala and the three Jedi gave their last smiles of appreciation to Senator Bonteri and her son before heading to take the transport which will take them back to Coruscant.
In Coruscant...
It was now night time.
Padme, Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia were in Chancellor Palpatine's Office.
Padme wore her usual dress which had a dark blue under-dress with a grey waistband. The band had designs on it. The over-dress was a lighter blue that split at the middle with similar designs as the waistband. The shoulders were puffed, and the sleeves had similar designs as the band. Her chocolate brown hair was held in a silver headdress, split into two sections in the back. It had a strip of metal that went around her head and had rectangular breaks that showed her hair.
Ferus removed the brown colour on his hair streaks to show their white colour and wore his Jedi Knight outfit again.
"Well, well, well."Chancellor Palpatine responded."This is quite a stunning development."
"Your Excellency, we would be remiss, if not irresponsible, to reject the Separatists' proposal."Padme suggested.
"Of course."Chancellor Palpatine agreed."An end to the fighting, would mean there's no need to borrow money for more clones, I can see why you would want so badly to believe that the Separatists desire peace."
"I don't understand."Padme admitted.
"In the past, whenever we reached out our hands in peace, they've been slapped away."Chancellor Palpatine declared."Can we believe that they're ready to sue for peace so easily?"
"If I might speak with you confidentially, I know that this is sincere."Padme assured."I've been in contact with my old friend Senator Mina Bonteri and the origin of the proposal is with her."
A short look of suspicion grew on Chancellor Palpatine at the mention of Senator Bonteri.
"Senator Bonteri?"Chancellor Palpatine asked with a frown."How was the dialogue established?"
"Does it matter, Chancellor?"Padme questioned."If the result is an end to the War?"
"I see your point, my dear."Chancellor Palpatine replied in agreement."Then we shall put the vote to the floor."
In the Senate...
Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia watched as Padme made her speech to the Senate.
"Given that the Separatists have put a call for negotiations on the table, the need for additional troops seems ill-timed."Padme complemented.
"Which means there is no need to deregulate the Banks."Bail admitted.
"I say we vote that down now."Senator Farr insisted.
"There is a move to vote on the proposed bill to lift regulations on the Banking Clan."Mas Amedda declared."You may enter your vote."
Senators started to press a button on there pods.
But before they all finished giving their agreements or disagreemnts, the lights suddenly went out and a second later the emergency power came on to give them a dim red light to see and prevent their pods to keep working.
Nadia glanced between Ahsoka and Ferus.
"What's going on?"Nadia demanded.
"I don't know, but I'm sure the Sith sleemo caused this."Ferus retorted.
Ahsoka frowned."That means Count Dooku found a loophole and had General Grievous launch this attack so Darth Sidious' plans can go forward on schedule."
The Senators of the Republic still hovering moved their pods back to the places they had entered with Padme moving her pod back to the spot where the three Jedi were standing.
"The bombing of the generator has been confirmed as a Separatist attack launched by General Grievous on the orders of Count Dooku!"Saam stated."They must pay for what they have done!"
"But it was the Separatist Senate that issued the bill of peace!"Padme protested.
"Obviously a tactic to lower our defences so Count Dooku could have General Grievous launch this attack."Mas Amedda argued.
"No!"Padme argued."That's not true!"
"I move to immediately deregulate the Banks."Halle suggested.
"We need a bank loan to get more troops now!"Rab called out.
"What are we waiting for?"Senator Paulness asked.
"I'm afraid we've been given no choice."Palpatine announced."To insure the safety of the Republic, we must deregulate the Banks."
The Senators cheered in agreement while Padme sat in her pod seat and shook her head sadly.
Her hope that peace would come to the Republic was decimated by the Sith again.
Afterwards...
Senator Amidala and the three Jedi walked up to Obi-Wan and Anakin, who were waiting for them.
"I'm returning your Padawans, Obi-Wan and Anakin."Padme declared.
"We're sorry your peace talks with Senator Bonteri failed, Padme."Obi-Wan apologised.
Nadia's mouth dropped in shock at her Master's response.
"How did you two know?"Ahsoka questioned.
"We have eyes and ears everywhere, Ferus, Ahsoka and Nadia."Anakin explained."That was dangerous and careless going to Raxus. Not to mention illegal, you four went too far this time."
Ferus frowned at his brother-in-law.
"You would do the same, Ani."Ferus argued."You do that all the time ever since you were inducted into the Jedi Order."
"He's right, Anakin."Obi-Wan agreed with a slight smile."How many times have you gone too far because you never listen to me and the Jedi Council?"
Anakin simply frowned at Obi-Wan's question.
The group started walking away in the hallway of the Senate building.
"This was too much, Obi-Wan."Anakin commented.
"Maybe so, Master Skywalker, but Dia and I did realise something."Ahsoka stated."The politics of this war, are not as black and white as we once thought they were."
Nadia glanced at Obi-Wan.
"Hey, Master?"Nadia spoke up, earning Obi-Wan's attention."Do you think the Clone Wars will end soon?"
"That's something I don't have a clear answer for, Nadia."Obi-Wan declared honestly."But I can tell you, Ahsoka, Ferus and Padme this, as long as Darth Sidious is out there and the monsters of the Separatists refuse to let peace exist again by launching these attacks, we have to keep fighting."
Nadia felt butterflies in her stomach as she began to walk with her companions.
"Looks like the Separatist were right about the Republic have a corruptive part after all."Nadia thought with a hint of disappointment."What an utter shame that the Clone Wars will continue despite our methods to try and end it today."
The small group of friends continued walking in the dark hallway of the Senate to Padme's office.
Nadia and Ferus held hands with each other to give each other comfort in the darkness and their failure to bring peace in the opposing sides for the day as well as embrace their new relationship.
