The Failure of a Father

Ch 8: Michael? Is That You?

The sun was beginning to descend, as its rays dwindled down in the sky and streaks of reddish-orange appear. The lamp posts were being lit, windows of various houses shined as the lights became brighter. People were dressed in their tux as they planned a trip to the cinema.

Michael was walking around the path of the sidewalks of Royal Woods. Lincoln was at Rusty's house for the day, planning a video game tournament in Left 4 Dead 2.

However, what will happen soon will be…unexpected and sudden.

Michael came across two familiar people, who are…

"Honey? Is that you?" Olivia asked, teary-eyed at the sight of seeing her son for the first time in days.

"Hey Mother…" Michael said, as he moved his foot in circular motion and glared lowly at his parents.

William sighed. "Michael, listen…I know you're angry at us, but listen, I regret abusing you deeply, Marcos called me a puta last time, and I got chewed out by Lincoln's dad a few weeks ago…"

Michael said, his voice sprinkled with a hint of venom. "Well, you deserved it anyways."

"I know…" William said, trying not to cry. "I didn't even see how much of an asshole I was to you until that one day, you cursed me off, and slapped me…you opened my eyes, and I saw the truth…"

The man slapped himself, making the tears fall out of his eyes. He covered his face with one hand and started crying softly.

Michael thought. "Poor Father…he must have been regretting his mistakes deeply." The sympathetic half thought that it was too much, while the indifferent half said that the man deserved it anyways for being a total asshole.

Michael hugged William, stopping him from crying. The father hugged him back even tighter, showing how much he had regretted his misdeeds as a father.

At Rusty's house…

Lincoln finished his video game tournament with Rusty, not long ago.

"Bye, Rusty!" Lincoln said as he opened the front door.

"See ya tomorrow!" Rusty said as he cleaned up the video game accessories, and Lincoln left.

Back with Michael and his parents…

Michael released his hug with William, as he turned to look at the moonlit sky. He breathed through his nose, and told his father, "Listen…even if I hate seeing you and Mother go to jail, doesn't mean that I will be so willing to forgive you…"

William averted Michael's gaze, when Lincoln walked past the scene. The oldest Afton then said. "I'm going now, see you…later…" He said as he walked off to Stephanie's house.

Lincoln stopped in his tracks, and he turned his eyes to look at the two adults. The 11-year-old Loud stared at them, until he rolled his eyes away, and kept walking his way to the Loud house.

The father of the Afton family, stood up and grabbed his wife's hand, as they walked back to the Afton household.

The next day…

William had a smile plastered on his face for the first time in days, ever since that little encounter with his son. He remembered what Michael said yesterday, and the feeling of hope shining on them kept burning inside them.

Elizabeth and CC needed some help from Lincoln, since they knew the 11-year-old Loud was good at writing and drawing comics. They were going to give Michael a present, and the sibling duo wanted to keep it as a secret.

So, they knocked on the door of the Loud residence, hoping that it was going to be the one person they wanted to see. Lincoln answered, and asked them.

"Hey, guys, uh…what do you need help with?" Lincoln asked the sibling duo.

"We need your help with Michael's present, we want to make him feel dear." CC replied.

"Sure thing." The 11-year-old Loud cleared his throat. "What is it?"

"We want you to write and draw a comic, about all the fun times we and Michael shared." Elizabeth said. "You can get some ideas from Mommy and Daddy's photo album."

"OK, just wait here, I'll go get my stuff." Lincoln said as he walked off upstairs to get his drawing materials.

Lori was texting Roberto on her phone, when she saw the Afton sibling duo at the door. "What are you doing here, guys?"

"We just needed some help from your brother, we wanted to give Michael a present." The ice cream fanatic said to the 17-year-old teen. "It's a secret."

"Oh." Lori said, as she turned off her phone. "I see, I'm going now." She headed upstairs.

Lincoln came back downstairs, with the following things; pencil, some coloring materials, and 10 sheets of paper. "OK, let's go!"

They went to the Afton residence, and into Elizabeth's room. Lincoln had to get the photo album from William and Olivia's room in the hall of the second floor. He got it successfully without being caught by the two adults, and he sneakily went back to the ice cream fanatic's room.

The little artist flipped through the pages of the album and sketched a picture from there as the comic's thumbnail, when Michael and his siblings were sleeping together on the couch, when the TV is still on. He titled it, 'Happy Moments in the Past'

The trio then wrote their names on the comic, CC's writing is a bit messy to say it, but for Lincoln, it was worth the time he had making the comic.

He sketched the time when Michael told off his father on Tuesday, and wrote the specified dialogue for the characters. Lincoln smiled as he kept drawing the panels, and he was able to design a comic with such beautiful art skills and sketching.

CC looked at Lincoln's sketch of when his older brother and father got into a conflict on Tuesday, it looked real, to the point he would start crying. Elizabeth looked with awe as the little artist designed the comic, she smiled as Lincoln kept drawing the sad and happy scenes.

William looked from outside Elizabeth's door, and smiled as Elizabeth and CC had a happy moment with their temporary brother, Lincoln Loud. The man knew the 11-year-old Loud had been through a lot of bullshit in the past, and he knew he had happy moments with his sisters too, as he began to develop his new habit. Day by day, he would go to the Loud residence, and upstairs to the Loud attic, to find old photos of Lincoln and his sisters when they were younger and show it to his kids.

It took a moment for William and Olivia to see how much of a motherfucker Chandler is. When they set foot in Royal Woods a few months ago, they saw Chandler using Lincoln to get some free stuff at Gus' Games and Grub. Boy, they were SO mad when Chandler got the nerve to NOT invite Lincoln to his birthday party.

As Lincoln made the finishing touches to the comic, CC watched as the little artist helped them with the comic.

Lincoln borrowed his pencil to Elizabeth, and the ice cream fanatic wrote:

Dear Mikey,

We know you may be angry at Mommy and Daddy, but we and Linky wanted to bring you a present with some of our pictures in it. Linky has some incredible drawing skills! He even decided to sketch the time you shouted at Daddy.

It looked so real, that you might just want to cry. Linky saw us as his siblings, he has a nice attitude!

Elizabeth gave the pencil to Lincoln, and the 11-year-old Loud wrote:

Dear Michael,

Hey, Mike, it's me…Lincoln. I helped your siblings with your gift. I put so much effort and hard work into it, and I hope you like it.

Lincoln paused for a minute, and sighed, then continued writing.

I know you are angry with Mr. and Mrs. Afton at this moment, however, when you ran away, they started arguing and yelling at each other. I told them to shut up, and asked them what's wrong. That night, me and your family tried to find you and came up with NOTHING. Listen, I've been through the same…before you guys arrived in R.W. I also got bullied and teased in school, but surely I have a thick skin.

CC took Lincoln's writing tool, and wrote:

Dear Big Brother,

Hey Mikey, it's me, Joseph. I haven't been fine since the day you ran off…I started having nighmares, Liz has the same condition. Dad banged his head on the porch a few weeks ago. Mum started to think she was a bad mother to you all along.

The trio then decided to bring Michael's present to him. They went downstairs and walked outside, the Williams' house was quite far to say it, but they could handle it.

Good thing, they saw Michael on the way.

"Guys?" Michael asked, looking at the comic. "What is that?"

"It's a gift for you." Elizabeth smiled.

"Linc did most of the work." CC said. "He got some ideas from Mum and Dad's photo album with pictures of us in it."

"Here's your present, Mike." Lincoln said as he handed the homemade comic to Michael. "There's a note on it, make sure you read it first…"

The oldest Afton read Elizabeth's note.

He had a heartfelt smile on his face, as he then read Lincoln's note.

Dear Michael,

Hey, Mike, it's me…Lincoln. I helped your siblings with your gift. I put so much effort and hard work into it, and I hope you like it.

Michael felt sympathy for Lincoln, and he then read CC's note.

Dear Big Brother,

Hey Mikey, it's me, Joseph. I haven't been fine since the day you ran off…I started having nighmares, Liz has the same condition. Dad banged his head on the porch a few weeks ago. Mum started to think she was a bad mother to you all along.

The teenager felt sympathy for his parents, one thing he thought he wouldn't experience until things were resolved between him and his father at least. He was on the fence, thinking of forgiving one of his parents sooner (or later).

He then read each panel of the comic, and when he saw the scene when he and his siblings were eating ice cream, it made him tear up. There was this one moment when they were playing in the bathtub, and they were putting lipstick on William when he's asleep. He sniffled as he turned to his siblings and Lincoln Loud, and hugged them.

"Thank you so much for the present, guys…" Michael said as he tightened his hug on the trio.

Lincoln patted Michael's head. "Yeah…" He chuckled.

Stephanie came back from skateboarding at the park last time. "Michael?" The teenage girl said, as she removed her hair tie, and fixed her ponytail. "Are they your siblings?" She asked, as she tied her hair back.

"Yeah, well, two of them." Michael said, as Roberto and Lori came into the scene suddenly.

"So…how was the gift your siblings and Lincoln gave you?" Lori asked, making Michael jump and scream in fear.

"Oh my gosh! Lori, you scared me!" Michael said, shocked.

"Lo siento, amigo…" Roberto chuckled. "We just want to ask how the regalo your siblings gave you is."

"It was totally sweet of them to give me a present…" Michael said as he hugged Elizabeth, CC, and Lincoln even tighter. "Which is why I love them so much!"

Elizabeth and CC hugged their older brother. Lincoln chuckled and blushed a bit in embarrassment.

"That's nice." Roberto said in his native language. "I'm glad that you're happy once again."

To be continued in Ch 9…

A/N: And the eighth chapter ends…right here! Pardon the fact that this chapter is abnormally 2,178 words long. I just had a lot of ideas to write, and I feel too lazy to divide it into two chapters. As for the second chapter of Deceit, it's still in progress, and I decided to you know, have Michael and his friends intervene in Lincoln's case. That's all I have to tell you for today, and peace out.
