Chapter 25
Field Trip!
Ruby sat on her desk, swinging her legs over the side. It was science class, and the day of the field trip. The class was waiting for the three other drivers to arrive. Ruby's group, Group 1, was being driven by Ms. Diaz herself, which was cool. It would be even more cool if Ms Diaz would show up.
Ruby double-checked she had everything. Backpack, suitcase...she'd check her backpack.
Various keychains that contained sanitizer, a robber alarm, and a flashlight. A notebook, her phone, Rylie's Tommy the Tank Engine lunchbox (her mom didn't have any others), toiletries bag, six packets of gum (maybe a bit overkill), pens and pencils, science binder, her wallet containing gift cards, money, a photograph of her and her family, and her ID. Yup, that was about everything.
One of the people in Ruby's group and the person sitting next to her, Olive, leaned over on their desk beside Ruby's and tapped her shoulder.
"Hey, you're in my group right? Do you know who's driving us? I had an orthodontist appointment yesterday. Had to get these stupid braces tightened." They flashed a smile full of shiny silver. Ruby nodded.
"I know the feeling. I had a retainer back in third grade because one of my teeth stuck out, and it was hell getting it tightened. And Ms Diaz is driving us... although I don't exactly know where she is." Ruby glanced around the corner, past the inspirational posters, to the door. No sign of her.
"Maybe she's just in the bathroom?" Ginger, a girl in Ruby's group and Olive's best friend asked. Ginger had also been in Ruby's ballet class when they were seven. Ruby recalled hating it, but she also remembered Ginger being amazingly good for a second-grader and getting top of the class. Huh.
"Maybe, but it'd be weird. She would've gone earlier." Olive reasoned. They snapped a hair elastic off their wrist and passed it to Ginger. "Hey, Ginny, mind putting my hair in a ponytail? It's too freaking curly, I hate it."
"I love your hair," Ginger replied loyally, tucking a stray piece behind their ear. Ruby nodded. "Same. I got boring straight hair, I wish it was curly like yours."
Olive's hair was a dark brown and curled wildly all over their head, stopping just below their shoulders. Ruby admired Olive's sense of style: leather jacket, dark olive-green pants with chains, and a white t-shirt reading in bold letters: I ATE A SHARK!
Ruby herself was wearing her leather jacket, a red collared Heccuva Boss t-shirt, and black high-waisted ripped jeans with fishnets. Her long red hair was tied up in two pigtails and she stuck gold hoops in her ears. It was one of her favourite outfits.
Ginger wore pretty much the same outfit every day - thick woolen gray cardigan, gold-framed glasses, white SPCA top, and various pairs of black leggings.
Ruby dug into her bag and passed them both some gum. Olive selected Tropical X-Plosion and Ginger picked out Winterberry Blast. Ruby decided on Mango Madness for herself. They chewed in silence.
Or not really in silence, the other kids were in full chatter mode. Camilla and Bella talked about how absolutely horrible it would be to be in separate groups. Levi, Dominic, and Kevin laughed over soccer jokes. Carson, Ryder, Jaya, and Aubrey shared a chocolate bar and talked about Ryder's new gazebo that his dad built. Even some of the drivers were talking, something about taxes and mortgages and whatever else adults talked about. Times like these Ruby wished Tulisa and Josh were a year older so they could hang out in school more.
The door swung open suddenly, and an exhausted Ms Diaz ran in, clutching a stack of papers.
"Oh my gosh. So sorry, everyone! The principal asked me to make him some coffee, then I got a phone call from my overbearing mother, then some random dog threw up on my shoes and I had to get spares - it was just a crazy morning. Okay, attendance. Right. Um, Aubrey Annis?"
Attendance happened in a matter of minutes, and before Ruby knew it, they were heading down into the parking lot to get into groups. Ruby stood with Camilla, Levi, Olive, and Ginger, as they waited by the car for Isaac, Tulisa, and Josh.
"Oh! I just got a text from Isaac's grandma. She says Isaac won't be able to make it, he has a doctor's appointment." Ms Diaz told them. Ruby nodded. One down... hopefully Tulisa and Josh would be able to make it. They'd been looking forward to this trip since the notice came out.
Almost to answer her silent wish, Tulisa and Josh came running down the stairs. Well, Josh ran. Tulisa laughed behind with her seemingly heavy suitcase.
"Hey guys!" Ruby waved to them. Josh waved, and Tulisa attempted one. Ruby headed over to her.
"Here, let me help." Together, they lifted up the suitcase and carried it down the stairs and into the lineup.
"What's in this?! Bricks?" Ruby huffed, wiping her hands on her jeans.
"Ha! No. I, um, may have brought a few too many clothes." Tulisa blushed a little. Ruby laughed, and hauled the heavy suitcase into the trunk. "Should've guessed. Oh, Isaac's not coming by the way. Ms Diaz got a last-minute call."
Tulisa slumped. "Boo. Oh well, I added him to my contacts. We can still call and text."
"How are things going with him, by the way? I don't know Isaac very well, I'll have to meet him sometime." Ruby asked. Tulisa sighed, and Ruby wasn't sure if it was a 'he's so dreamy' kind of sigh or an 'ugh' kind of sigh.
"Well, he's very good looking, but obviously that doesn't really matter. Uh, he has no siblings and he lives with his grandma. And he was held back a year, I think because he lived in Finland for his junior year. So he's actually eighteen." Tulisa listed. Ruby was about to reply when Ms Diaz cut her off.
"Alright happy campers! I have the seating list here. Isaac not being here actually works out perfectly, because now there's enough room to seat all of you!"
"I call shotgun!" Josh yelled. Everyone stared at him in silence. He put his hand down.
Ms Diaz pulled out a list.
"Okay! Levi, you'll sit next to me. Camilla, Olive, and Ginger, you'll sit in the middle. And Tulisa, Josh, and Ruby can sit in the back. Sound good? Clear as mud?"
Levi grinned and did a fist pump. Ruby and the twins shared a high five. Olive and Ginger gave an awkward wave to Camilla, who returned it. Ruby knew they weren't exactly part of the same circles, but Camilla could be pretty nice when she wasn't hanging around with Abbie and her friends. And she did feel bad for her. While her boyfriend, Levi, was in the same group as her, she didn't have any close friends to sit with.
Ms Diaz pulled down the seats, and Tulisa, Josh, and Ruby clambered into the back of the big black Honder Autopilot. Camilla, Olive, and Ginger followed them, and Ms Diaz and Levi climbed into the front two seats.
"Seatbelts, everyone!" Ms Diaz called. Josh smirked. "Please let this be a normal field trip."
"With the Diaz?" Ruby asked in a joking tone of voice.
"No way!" Everyone on the bus yelled.
Ruby gazed out the window in wonder. It was an hour and a half drive, and they'd passed the 'Welcome to Saffron Falls' sign about five minutes ago. Ruby could see a sparkling ocean in the distance, along with tall buildings beside them, and bustling streets filled with people.
A tapping on her shoulder broke the silence.
"I like your earrings." Ginger told her. Ruby grinned. "Really? Thanks! I'm actually planning on getting them pierced again, but higher up." She explained.
Ginger sighed.
"Wow, really? My mom is super strict. She won't even let me pierce my ears now."
Ruby tilted her head to the side. "But aren't you sixteen? I'd say that's plenty old enough, I got mine pierced when I was ten, and most parents will say twelve or thirteen."
"Yeah, but this is Ginger's mom we're talking about. She used to make Ginger wear her hair in slick buns and pick out her clothes for her. But eventually even she realized she was being ridiculous and let Ginger choose what she wanted to wear. Still, no earrings." Olive shrugged.
"Hm. Well that sucks. We both got our ears pierced when we turned fourteen." Josh said, pointing to him and Tulisa. Josh had two tiny sparkling silver studs, and Tulisa wore a pair of cute cherry-shaped earrings.
The car suddenly pulled to a stop, and they were finally there. Ruby unbuckled her seatbelt and climbed out of the car. Grabbing her suitcase and backpack, she allowed herself to look around once more, and wow the hotel was huge!
It towered into the sky (well, maybe not really, but from her perspective it sure did.) Pigeons flapped around them in a small gray flock. Ruby could see so many people - a blonde lady walking a tiny Yorkie, a man with blue hair playing a guitar, a family of four each munching on popcorn and different pastel shades of cotton candy (candyfloss for you British people).
"Okay! Everyone meet in the lobby, and I'll get everything sorted out." Ms Diaz instructed them. Ruby grinned, and with a deep breath, ran into the hotel with her classmates by her side.
"Leslie Yvonne?"
"Here."
"Grace Zora?"
"Here!"
"Drew Zora?"
"Present."
Ms Diaz folded up her attendance. "Alright! Now that everyone's here, you can get into your groups! Please line up, single-file, beside your group leader and follow them."
Everyone started to separate into their respective groups. Ruby walked over behind Ms Diaz and watched the other kids. Abbie was with Seanna Pearl. Matt and one of the waitresses, Leah, were with Karl Jacobs, and that one girl Debby who gave her an Orio was with Rhodes Ingram.
Ruby was very glad she was in the group with her best friends. Not many people got that luxury.
"Okay! Group 1, please follow me upstairs! I have the room setups." Ms Diaz started off up the stairs, her pointy heels making a clicking sound on the shiny tile floor. Ruby gazed around in wonder. The hotel was gorgeous.
White marble tile floor shone under her feet. The walls were made up of gorgeous sweet-smelling dark oak wood. The furniture and accents were different shades of red. Chartreuse, cerise, crimson, ruby (ha), apple. There was a grand golden banister that Ruby so desperately wanted to slide down. Intricate tapestries hung from the ceiling, golden tassels waving with a breeze. A shimmering chandelier danced around the ceiling, lighting up the lobby. It was beautiful, and Ruby couldn't wait to see more.
"Okay, we get the second floor! So, the pairings for rooms are: Ruby and Tulisa, Levi and Josh, Olive and Ginger. Camilla was originally going to share with Ginger, and Olive would be with Isaac...but Camilla can have the empty room to herself. Sound good, everyone?"
Everyone did a thumbs up, and Camilla actually looked relieved. Ruby guessed sharing a whole room with someone that she barely knew wouldn't exactly be fun, and having a whole sort-of-house to yourself would probably be fun.
"Let's unpack!" Ruby said. She unzipped her suitcase and started to pull out her clothes. Tulisa struggled with her zipper, and when she finally got it open, there was a giant tornado of clothes. The suitcase seemed to relax with relief.
Ruby pulled a stray huge wooly white sweater off her head where it had landed. She examined it.
"You do know it's going to be sunny all week. Why did you feel the need to bring an entire flock of sheep with you?" Ruby folded up the soft jacket and passed it to her friend.
Tulisa shrugged, and tucked the sweater back into her suitcase. It was a nice suitcase. It was black with watercolour purple flowers splashed across it.
"I don't know! I have a lot of clothes. And I've learned from moving around the country that you have to be prepared for anything."
Ruby sat down on the plain white bed.
"What was it like? Having to move around so much."
Tulisa plopped onto the bed as well and rested her head on a white pillow, her gray-brown hair fanning out.
"Hard. And not very fun. I lived in Hurricane till we were six, then my family moved to Toronto. I thought, oh well, maybe I'll make some friends. It was the beginning of my life, and I figured I'd start it there. But then we moved again, to California. Of all the places, I think I liked it there the most. Then we moved around Canada and the US, going to Vancouver, New York, Edmonton, Arizona, Texas, Halifax, Miami, South Dakota - we even stayed in Hawaii for three weeks. That was a vacation though."
Ruby shook her head. "Wow. I mean, you must have seen some awesome things, but that still sucks."
"Yeah. Just as I'd gotten settled and made some friends, we'd move. And eventually, Josh stopped being friendly. He didn't try to make friends, or get good grades, because we'd just move again in another few months. It sucked, because he was super into soccer and then he just...stopped. I tried to remain optimistic, but it was hard. Then my dad said we'd be moving back to Hurricane, Ohio, and I was happy. Our grandparents live in Detroit, so I'd get to see them again. I figured I could talk with some old friends, like my old best friends Sahanna and Maisie...but they ignored me. We'd talked on the phone since we were six...up until I was fourteen. Then she cut all contact. But then we met you!" Tulisa grinned.
Ruby gasped. "Wait, Sahanna and Maisie?! They were my friends until I was thirteen. They dumped me soon after. Total jerks." She rolled her eyes.
"Wow, really? Why'd they dump you?" Tulisa flipped onto her stomach and propped her hands up with a handknit cat pillow that must have been in her enormous suitcase.
Ruby shifted uncomfortably.
"Um, well, my dad died when I was twelve. Car accident. It was...a really dark time for me and Raven, my older sister. I was eating too much, and I was really depressed for a while. And my mother, who I assume was at a hookup, accidentally got pregnant with my little sister, Rylaina. That was when Raven started going to a special art school, which meant I had to take care of Rylie while my mom was at work. I was failing in school, I had no time for a social life...it wasn't a good time for me."
Ruby absent-mindedly played with her stuffed fox pillow, T.H. She didn't notice it when Tulisa stepped over and wrapped her in a big hug.
"I'm so sorry. That's terrible, really. I can somewhat understand. I used to have an eating disorder, bulimia. It didn't get too out of hand, luckily. My mom and dad noticed it quickly and got help." She paused for a second. "Are you...okay?" She asked tentatively.
Ruby nodded.
"Eventually my mom made friends with this lady, Lauren Gilbert. She's a therapist, and she offered to help me for free. My mom said yes, and I was able to move on. My mom soon got a better job at this journalist company, and she works as a secretary. She made friends who helped baby-sit Rylie, and she even met this one guy, Jared. And... they're getting married in July!"
Tulisa sat up straight. Her cobalt blue eyes went huge. "WHAT?! How come you didn't tell me this before?! Can I come? Are you going to be a bridesmaid? What's the colour scheme?!"
Ruby laughed at her friend's enthusiasm.
"Well, the colour scheme is red. Raven, and my mom's younger sister Daisy, and I will be bridesmaids. Rylie is going to be the flower girl. My mom's friend Adam is going to be the best man, and his husband and kids are coming. My cousins who I've literally never met and grandparents who I met only once are coming. So yea, pretty normal." Ruby ended off on a monotone voice and shrugged, like it was no big deal.
Tulisa shook her shoulders repeatedly. "Oh my God, that is not 'pretty normal'! You're supposed to tell me these things!"
Ruby rolled her eyes. "Ugh, whatever. What about your parents, are they doing anything exciting?"
"Ehh, they aren't super exciting. My mom's name is Rosie, and my dad's name is Kenny. My dad's a police officer, and a good one at that. He doesn't really talk much...but he's insanely strong and really good at fighting. He taught me and Josh a bunch of self-defense moves in case there was some creepy dude in a van. And my mom is a nurse. She used to work at a farmer's market selling tea. We have a pretty epic garden in our backyard." Tulisa's eyes shone with pride.
"Sounds like you have great parents." Ruby smiled.
Suddenly, there was a knocking at the door. Ruby and Tulisa turned their heads towards it.
"Come in!" Ruby called. Ms Diaz poked her head through the door. Her chestnut hair fell in neat waves around her face.
"Hey girls! We're meeting downstairs to go to Donimo's to grab pizza, meet us down there soon, okay?" She asked.
Ruby and Tulisa both gave a thumbs up. "Can do!"
"Cool. See you down there!" She disappeared down the hallway, made apparent by her noisy heels.
Ruby smiled, and gave Tulisa a hug, surprising the younger girl.
"Thanks for listening to me rant. I know it was probably really boring." Ruby mumbled. Tulisa shook her head.
"No, no. It was really nice, knowing there was someone else who might somewhat understand. Of course Josh is really good to talk to, but sometimes I just need a girl-friend's opinion, you know?"
"Totally. And I'm always here if you want to vent or just chat about anything." Ruby told her.
Tulisa nodded, and grinned.
"Yeah. Now let's go get some pizza! I'm craving plain cheese. Thick crust."
The two girls skipped down the hall, joining up with their group, ready for a week of friendship, mystery, and above all, fun!
Awesome! Tulisa and Ruby are becoming closer. Sorry if that was too much talking, but now you know more about their past! And Kenny is T+J's dad :)
I've been waiting to do this field trip for so long! Plot twists, lore reveals...and fun! Lots of funnnnnnn
Random question: what is your favourite kind of flower? My favourites are lilies and poppies!
Bye for now!
