Chapter 36
Tulisa Goes On A Date
"I'm sorry that I complained about your egg salad sandwiches." Tulisa apologized, crossing her legs and sighing. "Please, get out of there."
A pale, hoodie-sleeved hand emerged from the blanket fort and twisted the yellow sign that said 'Josh's Blanket Fort' to 'No Tulisas Allowed!' The hand made a shooing motion, then disappeared into the fort.
Tulisa groaned. Her and Josh were tasked with cooking and cleaning that day. Tulisa cleaned, Josh cooked. Normally, this would be a good fit for Josh, but unfortunately the eggs he used were a little...gross. Which Tulisa had pointed out. Unfortunately, Josh had never taken criticism well, and he'd locked himself in his blanket fort with a vow of silence.
"I'm not leaving till you promise to talk to me." Tulisa said stubbornly.
Stubbornness was a quality the twins shared, however it was not a good match when they were pitted against each other.
The hand emerged again, this time with a rather rude gesture. Tulisa swatted the hand and groaned again.
"Fine! I'll just take your earrings and leave, then."
The hand suddenly opened up the fort and crawled out, except this time it had a body attached to it.
Josh pulled his hood off, revealing messy gray-brown hair and cobalt blue eyes, another thing the twins shared. He was wearing a pale yellow oversized hoodie with cherry blossoms on it, and blue ripped jeans with fishnets underneath.
He frowned.
"Don't take my earrings. What do you need them for, anyway?" He asked sullenly.
Tulisa rolled her eyes.
"I've been trying to tell you! I'm going on a date with Isaac Martin, and I was wondering if you could help me get ready?"
Josh wrinkled his nose.
"Isaac Martin? I dunno, he's a little suspicious. He's kinda...too perfect. He seems like an alien spy or something."
Tulisa sighed. "Only you would think he's an alien spy. I'm not five, Josh, I can date who I want."
Nodding, Josh stood up. "Yeah, I know. It's just...you get so invested in these guys, and then you're absolutely crushed when they break your heart. I just don't want to see you all sad again."
Tulisa gave him a half-smile. "Thanks, I guess. Now, can you do my eyeliner? You're way better than me at it, I always end up doing it all wobbly."
They ended up picking out black strappy flats and a tight dark red dress paired with a black lace choker and ruby stud earrings for her to wear. She added a light blush and mascara, a touch of eyeliner and lipstick along with black nail polish (matching with Josh), and left her hair wavy and down. Josh said it would make her look elegant and regal.
A car horn honked in the distance. Tulisa ran to the window to see a dark blue convertible pulling up to their driveway.
"He's here! How do I look?" She asked, running a hand through her gray-brown, white-streaked hair.
Josh put his hands on her shoulders. "You look great. Now go get him, and if he breaks your heart, then call me or Ruby and we'll be there with a chainsaw."
Tulisa laughed.
"Okayyyy. Thanks for your help, Josh. I really appreciate it." Tulisa beamed, eyes filled with warmth.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Now go get your man." Josh mumbled, slightly embarrassed from the compliment. He turned her around and practically shoved her down the long flight of stairs and out the bright yellow door.
Tulisa ran down the driveway as elegantly as she could. And there he was! Isaac Martin, who was standing there in all of his stupidly hot glory.
He was wearing a white button-up shirt that stood out against his milk chocolate-coloured skin. It was half tucked into his black faded jeans and gold-studded belt. His dark brown hair was left wild and messy, but in a way that was probably more attractive than it should be.
He grinned and waved when he noticed her.
"You look beautiful. I love those earrings." He smiled with warm brown eyes. His eyes...Tulisa stopped. No. She was not going to simply obsess over his looks the whole time. She'd done that before, and it made for a very awkward date.
Tulisa did a little twirl, her hair and skirt fanning out.
"Thank you! They're actually my brother's." She laughed, a little forced. Did cool, flirty, mysterious girls say that they borrowed earrings from their brothers?
Isaac nodded. "Josh, right? Yeah, I know him from the soccer team. He seems pretty nice. Although I'm a little more interested in the other twin."
A blush spread from her neck all the way to the tips of her ears and she ran a hand through her hair self-consciously.
"Ahaha... you're welcome!"
She mentally face-palmed. What? Who says that?
"I'm welcome?" Isaac looked like he was trying to hold back a laugh.
"No! Er-" Tulisa racked her brain for things to say. Normal, intelligent, human things.
"I'm not welcome?" Isaac pouted.
"What- no- I- okay. What I'm trying to say is, thank you."
"You're welcome!" Isaac cheered. They took one look at each other and burst into aching laughter.
"Oh God...shall we head to the restaurant?" Tulisa sighed.
"We shall. M' lady." Isaac held the door open and swept one arm to the side like a fancy butler. Tulisa giggled and stepped inside.
~lll~
"Anything look good?" Isaac asked.
Tulisa searched the menu. Spaghetti was tasty, but she wasn't very good at eating it without making a complete mess. Plus, it might have meatballs or meat sauce. Salad would be easy and decidedly not messy, but not very fun.
Hmm... Unfortunately, the restaurant they were at, called Jenna's, didn't serve many vegetarian-friendly options. Tulisa settled on a taco that featured lettuce, tomato, various herbs, and tofu instead of meat. She didn't understand all the hate around tofu. It was actually really good!
Tulisa almost burst into laughter when she saw egg salad sandwiches as an option. She wouldn't complain about those, but she was really craving a taco at the moment.
"I'm thinking a veggie tofu taco. What are you getting?" Tulisa questioned. Isaac scanned the menu one more time, then pointed somewhere on the right.
"I think I'll get some dahl with white rice. Vegetarian-safe!" Isaac said cheerfully.
Tulisa gasped.
"You're vegetarian too? Wow, I didn't know there was anyone else in the school!"
Isaac nodded. "Yeah! There's this other girl, Aubrey, who's vegetarian. Unfortunately, she doesn't share my views on aliens. She thinks they don't exist. I mean, come on! A whole damn universe out there, and she thinks there's no other life forms other than us Earthlings? Extremely selfish of her."
Tulisa laughed. Earlier, they'd been having a discussion on aliens, and they both agreed that the were real. So far, the date has been going great. Isaac was amazing. He was hilarious, charming, and so, so sweet. The fact that he was insanely good-looking didn't hurt either.
A red-haired waitress brought them their food and lemonade beverages on two fancy white platters. And just from a joking dare by Tulisa, Isaac requested a kids activity booklet. The waitress, Ada, looked at them funny, but complied.
"Oooh! I found Pirate Pete!" Tulisa wheezed, pointing to a very obvious duck hiding behind a leafy green bush. Isaac was leaning back in his chair laughing. Two gray-haired old ladies in the seat across from them stared at him, confused.
"Oh my God, did you see the look on her face?" Tulisa made an exaggerated version of Ada's face. Isaac cackled and took a long sip of his lemonade.
"We should probably actually eat our food now," Isaac chuckled. Tulisa nodded and picked up her taco. She leaned in and took a big, crunchy bite. Mm...that was one good taco. Except-
"Aah! Hot, hot, hot!" Tulisa choked out. They must have used hot sauce on the taco or something!
Isaac smirked. "I know, I'm extremely hot, but please, try and contain yourself."
Tulisa rolled her eyes with a grin and quickly downed the lemonade. It somewhat worked, but her tongue still ached. Whatever. She peered into the taco and peeled off the lettuce, as that seemed to have the most sauce on it. What was remaining, she wiped off with a paper napkin.
She took another bite. Finally, perfection.
"So, what's Ruby's family like?" Isaac asked.
Tulisa blinked. That came from nowhere.
"Uh- why are you asking? She's not interested in guys, if that's what you're getting at."
Isaac snorted. "Um, yeah, she's made that kind of obvious. And besides, I wouldn't take you out on a date just to get with another girl, I'm not that much of a douche. And...uh, I don't know. I think my grandmother might work with her mom or something."
Tulisa found that statement a bit odd, especially considering his grandmother was in her eighties, but she complied. Maybe she still worked. There was a 102-year-old lady who still worked as a lawyer, after all.
"Uh, well, her mom works at a journalist company, I think. And I'm pretty sure her soon-to-be stepdad is a cop. And then she's got an older sister who's graduating to an art college soon, plus a little sister."
Isaac looked a bit displeased at the description of her stepdad, especially at the cop bit, but he kept smiling. "I wish I had siblings. It's always just been me and my gran, she adopted me when I was just a baby."
Tulisa nodded. "That's cool."
They both ate their food in silence, and when they were done, they kind of just looked around. Ada came and took their platters. Both of them were too full for dessert, so they split and paid the check and left.
It was pretty late already, about 8:30. Tulisa was supposed to be back by at least nine, so they still had time.
"Sooooo…" Tulisa said. The mood in the air was getting more awkward by the minute.
Suddenly, Isaac's eyes lit up.
"Wanna dance?" He asked.
Tulisa looked around and laughed. They were standing in a parking lot beside a small empty field. The sky was cloudy, but just clear enough to see the half moon shining brightly.
"You sure? Do you even know how to dance?"
Isaac blushed and ran a hand through his dark curls, and if that wasn't hot as heck-
"I don't know how it took me this long to realize it, but you're the cute girl I danced with on Halloween at Freddy's, remember? I hope you like those shoes, by the way."
Tulisa wasn't sure if it was scientifically impossible to be this attracted to a guy. He was the one who'd caught her when she fell, danced with her, and made the night complete? That was just- okay, she needed to dance with him right this second or else her entire head would explode.
Tulisa put her hands on his shoulders, he dropped his to her waist, and they began to do this odd combination of a tango and a waltz, which somehow worked.
They spun and twirled in the field by the parking lot, streetlights and cars lighting the area up in white and red and orange, as if they were at a party.
And then when he dipped her down and their dance ceased to go on once again, he flicked his gaze to her lips, and then back up to her eyes. Tulisa could see every freckle, the light stubble on his cheeks, his glittering brown eyes.
"Can I- may I, um…"
Tulisa shook her head.
"Stop talking."
And she wrapped her arms around his neck, leaned in, and kissed him.
Isaac seemed a little startled, and didn't kiss back at first, but then he seemed to get the hang of this and wrapped his arms around her waist. He kissed back with fire, and Tulisa didn't know what kissing was like, but if this was it, then holy cheese had she been missing out all these years.
He spun her around and pressed her against a tree, and Tulisa didn't even care that they were in public, or that they might be late or past her curfew. All she cared about was the hilarious, charming, sweet, and undeniably hot guy she was kissing.
Eventually, Isaac pulled away, hair dishelved and with a doggish grin. He smiled softly and looked away for a moment.
"Um, so I don't know if this is sudden, or whatever, but...would you maybe want to be my girlfriend? It's okay if you don't want to, I totally understand."
Tulisa laughed.
"Are you crazy? You know, I don't always honor the guy I'm out with with a Pirate Pete scavenger hunt."
Isaac burst into laughter.
"I guess I'm special then?"
"Oh, you definitely are. And thank you so much for a fantastic date, I really loved it."
Isaac winked cheekily.
"You're welcome, m' lady."

"So, what did you get?"
William straightened his purple tie and stared down the younger boy in front of him. The boy had been sent out to collect information, in exchange for a couple hundred dollars.
William wasn't short on cash, that was for sure. His part-time job got him plenty of money. He'd go to work, and Cassidy would look after Jojo so that they wouldn't destroy his bunker. It all worked out.
The boy shuffled around and passed him a small notepad. William took it and read off the bullet points. He glanced back up at the boy and raised an eyebrow.
"That's it? This is what I'm paying you for?"
The boy looked uncomfortable.
"Look, Dave, I'm not so sure that this is a good idea. It just feels...wrong. And kind of creepy. Why do you need to know all this?" He picked at a lint ball on his shirt.
William kept his expression cool.
"Listen young man, I know this might seem a little shady, but you can trust me. That girl is...my niece, and I just wanted to know what was going on in her life. You know, as a caring uncle."
The boy frowned. "I guess that makes sense. Just...asking about this girl, getting information on her...it's difficult to do! I mean, it looks a little suspicious when I'm not even friends with her."
"Then become friends with her."
"I don't even know her."
"Then get to know her, dumbass!" William yelled.
The boy's eyes glittered with fear, and he backed up slightly. William sighed. He really needed to get his anger issues in check, he was going to scare away his only ticket to a living spy.
"Sorry. I'm sorry. I just...have a short temper. Listen, any more information would be great. Here's the hundred dollars, now make yourself gone."
William slid him a crisp bill, and the boy took it with hesitation. He gave him a wary look, then exited the room.
William exhaled and leaned back in his chair.
His plan was sound. Lure the girl to his place, kidnap her, and then she'd live here with him and Cassidy and Jojo! They'd get along great, the three of them. Then they could all be a happy family again! They could have dinners together, chat about their likes and dislikes, share secrets, for all eternity.
William smiled, content. And if she didn't want to stay, well.
He chuckled and brushed a bit of dust off the leather handle of his favourite knife.
He had a way to deal with her.
A/N
Wowowowow, the plot thickens. Who is the mystery boy and girl? I bet that none of you will ever be able to guess (okay it's slightly obvious).
Challenge: what is your favourite animal? Can be real, like a giraffe or a dragon, or imaginary, like a Chupacabra or a chimera. My personal favourite animal is a cat, could you tell? ;)
Have an amazing day/night!
