Hey everyone, if you know me this might be unexpected but here is the first chapter of Judicial Heart. What to expect before the chapter gets started. It's going to follow Cannon for a bit, with major tweaks. Also, don't expect regular updates like with Sylphid's Happiness. This is a side project currently until I either get much further in Sylphid's or I get burnt out, which at this rate doesn't seem likely. Either way I hope you enjoy the chapter and this new idea from me. -EG
P.S. Just a note, some characters will act a little different in this story. Mainly Hestia... But also, Ryu to some degree. Hope you enjoy regardless. -EG

Chapter 1 Cor Iustitiae
It all happened so quickly, one moment the feeling of confidence filled Bell's rookie heart. The next dread, unlike anything he had ever felt, flooded all of his limbs forcing him to run at a speed his level-one status shouldn't be able to manage.
He could feel the small stones that peppered the dungeon crunch and crack underfoot as he ran. He was doing his best to keep moving in random patterns, as the massive hand of the monster chasing him flew by, missing him by less than an inch. The monster had already clipped his shoulder causing blood to flow freely from it.
His advisor's words rang clearly in his head as he continued to move, 'Remember Bell, no matter how confident you might feel. Never let your guard down in the dungeon. Otherwise. You. Will. Die.' He could remember how much emphasis she put on the last part. Bell wished that he had followed his advisor's warning. 'Never again.' He swore mentally as another fist flew by so close the air breaking around it seemed to burn his skin.
The notion seemed impractical, when a dive was going smoothly how could one not feel confident? Still, he ran, he did his best to avoid paths that others might be traveling. 'If I'm going to die. I at least don't want anyone else to risk the same fate. Hopefully, the other rookie adventures I pulled the minotaur from will be smart and leave to let the guild know.'
A minotaur, Bell absentmindedly remembered the story of Argonaut that his grandfather had told him when he was a child, the story of how a hero of old killed one to rescue a princess. That thought, that tiny absence of focus caused him not to notice the jagged rock that poked out of the ground, his foot slammed into it sending his body flying to the ground.
His cheek burned as another sharp rock pierced his cheek, and blood started leaking out freely. On instinct, he rolled to the left as a fuzzy leg stomped on the ground where his chest had been not even a quarter of a second prior.
He rolled backward and started to rise back to his feet, as the minotaur's fist connected with his chest, cracking several of his ribs and sending him shooting backward into a wall. His beginner armor shattered at the impact, the shards seemed to dig into his chest before they clattered to the ground.
He watched the minotaur approach, his back flared in pain as the blood leaked out of his mouth. 'Not… good…' he thought, he was having trouble breathing. 'Maybe a… punctured lung…' his mind raced to tell him.
He couldn't move his legs anymore, they were encased in imaginary stone from all the running he did. He smiled knowing this was the end, but that didn't stop him from crying out. Without conscious thought, he grabbed the rookie starting dagger and threw it with all the force he could muster.
The minotaur grunted, raising a hand, and slapped it out of the air, sending it careening into the stone wall shattering the weak weapon. He forced his left arm to twitch in an attempt to do anything, but the pain blinded him for a moment, nearly causing him to black out.
The minotaur took its sweet time approaching, as it knew as much as Bell knew that he couldn't move anymore.
The minotaur was only two feet away, he could smell the musk it emitted and the feted breath that it released in great gasps. The combination of scents made him want to vomit.
A wave of blue haze, then the hot blood splashed over him. The warmth disgusted him, but he was so relieved that he didn't care. The minotaur's body split into two separate halves. 'It… it had been cut through from the shoulder to the hip with a single swing!' His mind gawked at the bloody mess.
He saw a stoic warrior standing still, a wooden sword already placed at her hip. The ears of an elf, with sharp glowing sky-blue eyes to match. A green leaf-shaped cloak and mask hid any other details.
His heart burned at the sight, but the adrenaline faded rapidly as all the injuries registered at once. His lunges forced out a cough as his blood splattered onto the floor. Even still, seeing such a beautiful elven warrior before his death was a good reward for his suffering.
He mouthed words he didn't even know as his mind went dark with the image of the sky-blue eyes lingering in his unconscious mind.
X
Ryu's mind slowly began to gain consciousness, it had been a long night, but it wasn't nearly exhausting enough to prevent her dream or nightmare as it was.
Absent-mindedly her hand rose and fell over her closed eyelids, they were damp not that it surprised her. If she was being honest, she fully expected it.
She lay there for over an hour, waiting as the fading nightmare sapped her will to do anything. It was early she could tell, far earlier than she normally woke up. With a heavy sigh, she sat up, stood, and stripped out of her night clothes that were damp with sweat, a simple white sleeveless tunic, and brown shorts that ended at her mid-thigh.
She reached over to her wardrobe and grabbed the usual one-piece outfit, a plain green one-piece that fell out to just below her knee. Then she stopped, she remembered that today was her one day off. She had other obligations to keep, so she placed the green outfit back and reached under her small bed grabbing a small case. Flipping it onto her bed she opened it and saw her outfit, one that she tried to wear only rarely as it brought back unwelcome memories.
Still, she slipped on, green shorts and a sturdy flexible white sleeveless tunic. Tall flexible brown boots slipped over her legs, she took a second to look at herself in the mirror. Not for the first time she realized how her sleeping clothes matched this outfit, but they were much more comfortable.
Looking at her reflection in the mirror caused her to flinch, her short green hair and slender body. Seeing herself in that specific outfit forced her to remember, to relive if only for a second.
She wanted to break the mirror due to forcing her to remember, but she held her hand steady, she couldn't afford another. The last article of clothing was a green cloak with a leaf shape where the hood was. Tucked underneath all of the clothing was what looked like a fancy stick, she gripped it feeling the familiar smoothed wood perfectly fit her hand.
Swinging her weapon in the small room she nodded, grabbed her belt, and tied the wooden sword to it. "Don't worry, I'll be there soon enough." She whispered, turning and opening her door to find a silent long hall. With little trouble she left, completely undetected.
.
.
.
Ryu had to wait, for what felt like hours as she watched Adventurers funneling into the dungeon. A few she recognized, most she didn't. Only one of the people she didn't recognize caught her attention. It was a young human, he had a goofy-looking smile on his face. 'A novice adventurer.' She thought as the flash of white hair vanished from sight.
She sighed, a part of her wanted to chase after that human, just to tell them to take the dungeon seriously. 'If you go into the dungeon with an extremely positive outlook. You'll end up dying.' Still, she didn't, or it would be better to say she couldn't. That smile reminded her of someone dear to her. 'Just swap the white hair with red… and they would be almost identical, except for gender.'
That memory caused her mood to drop. She debated returning home and locking herself in her room for the day. But she couldn't, she would never forgive herself if she did. 'Just another hour and it should be quiet enough.' She thought as she sat on the roof of a building that was located near the Tower, making sure she was out of sight.
.
.
.
Ryu passed through the first several floors without seeing a single monster. She was glad about that, she didn't have the spare energy to exert, minimal as it would've been.
She had just entered the fourth floor when she heard screaming, a group of adventurers were running straight towards her. 'No, they are running for the stairs.'
As the small party approached she forced her voice to increase in volume. "What's wrong!"
The seeming leader of the party, a human with brown hair, gasped for air. "Minotaur… chasing… white haired human…" He managed to say through great gasps. "He… saw us… and ran another… direction allowing… us to escape."
Ryu's eyes widened, and the image of the white-haired rookie popped into her mind. "Where?"
The adventurer shook his head. "Floor 5… in…" The moment she heard floor 5 she took off at a full sprint. Judging by the gasps of the adventurers she was leaving behind, they had never seen someone move so quickly.
She moved quickly through the dungeon, each step she took seemed to leave a small crater in her wake. 'The stairs to the fifth floor.' She thought she launched herself downward, skipping almost every step in a single bound. 'Please let me make it.'
.
.
.
Ryu cursed at her impatience. She should have listened to what they said instead of moving as quickly as possible. She had spent several minutes blindly running around the floor not finding any sign of the white-haired rookie or the minotaur.
She was starting to panic, as flashes of memory filled her. Her breath was growing labored despite not feeling the slightest bit tired. 'Why… am I getting so worked up? Is it simply because…' She shook her head to clear her mind. 'It doesn't matter, it's… the right thing… to do.'
Left, left, right, straight for fifty feet, another left. She raced, focusing her attention on her hearing. The moment she felt like giving in and accepting that she let someone else die, she heard a loud cracking sound followed by a scream of pain.
She moved without thinking, 'Close.' She rounded three more corners until she saw the furry mass of muscles. The human was embedded an inch into the wall and looked like his shoulder was dislocated. Blood dribbled from his mouth, but he hadn't given up yet.
Even as she ran down the long corridor, she could see the adventurer grab his only weapon and throw it at the minotaur. Which was easily knocked aside, seeing the determination of this rookie to survive caused her very soul to burn as she remembered, her former adventurer's companion.
Then the look of acceptance shone through his ruby eyes. She grabbed her sword as she moved, her skill activated causing it to glow a subtle blue as she swung downward cutting the minotaur in half with a single swing. It's blood launched in almost every direction. She watched as the pure snow-white hair was stained red with blood.
She gasped, as their eyes met. His mouth moved, forming words but no sound escaped. As the light faded the human fell unconscious. In a panic, she pulled him from the wall lowering the human to the ground, and started to cast her healing magic. "The song of the now distant forest. The nostalgic song of life. Please bring the mercy of healing to those that seek you." She focused and channeled as much mind as she could into the chant. "Noah Heal." She whispered as waves of healing light washed over the boy.
Ryu heard steps running from behind her, she could hear the voice of adventurers she had once known. "This way! The last minotaur went this direction."
Three sets of steps approached from behind, she had to hold back her instincts to ready her weapon.
Three people rounded the corner, an elf, a beast person, and a human. She knew them all too well.
'The Princess, the drunken wolf, and the silent human.' She silently thought.
The princess had vibrant emerald hair, and wearing robes of green and white. Her long elven ears were longer than her own. The wolf had gray hair, a purple marking under his eye, and light armor that covered very little of his body. The silent human was, depending on who you ask, the most stunning. Pure golden hair and eyes, she wore a battle skirt and light armor over her chest, which did little to hide her figure.
The princess' voice shouted in surprise at the sight of the minotaur as she rounded the corner. Ryu could feel their eyes on her back. It sent a tingle up her spine, but she ignored it and focused on making sure her healing was effective.
She could see a few splotches of red on his shirt around his heart and lungs. 'Not good.'
She doubted her healing would act fast enough. "What happened?" The princess, asking approaching her footsteps, caused her nerves to spike.
Ryu did her best to hide her voice and keep her face hidden, "I heard an adventurer was being chased by a minotaur. I… had to help."
Ryu tilted her head slightly, "Unfortunately, by the time I arrived he had already been struck. He lost consciousness a moment ago, and I don't think my healing will be enough." Ryu wanted to ask the princess to heal him as well, but she couldn't.
The memory of her friends passed, and she had to put her pride to the side. "Please, Lady Riveria could you. I… don't want to let this boy die."
She felt Riveria observing her, then she moved a few steps closer and kneeled next to her. "Of course… Bete, Aiz go back and let the others know the situation is handled." She gave her order and returned her focus on the situation at hand.
"I expect to hear what happens, worthless rookie." Bete spat out but started to make his exit. Aiz remained silent, seeming to be observing the pair before simply nodding and making her exit.
Riveria placed a hand over the boy's chest and started her chanting. It was a long chant, so Ryu took the opportunity to recast her magic despite knowing the risk of who she was being revealed. She… couldn't let another like her… Ryu shook her mind and forced her mind to focus on her magic.
Riveria finished her chant, as a wave of healing magic, unlike anything Ryu could ever manage, was funneled into the boy. Slowly he regained some of his color and his breathing grew easier. 'He probably had a few broken ribs.' She watched as his shoulder was snapped back into place.
She let out a sigh of relief. Riveria sighed clearly tired and turned to face her. Ryu happened to glance just enough over and saw Riveria's emerald eyes grow wide. 'She knows?'
Then they softened, "I always wondered why a specific elf always avoided me, especially when elves are always doing everything they can to help me. But I believe I understand why." She sighed a bit, "Why were you so determined to save this human out of everyone?"
Ryu hesitated, despite it having been so many years. "I…" She sighed accepting that it was already too late. "He's too innocent. You should've seen the smile on his face when he entered the dungeon this morning… I…" She wanted to say more but couldn't.
Riveria seemed to place some sort of pieces together, "Does he remind you of Scarlet Harnel? A bright smile was always her strongest feature." Hearing that alias caused Ryu's heart to shatter a bit, she managed to force her body to not show any signs. She couldn't speak, otherwise there would be no stopping herself. So she simply nodded.
Riveria stood. "Well, I'll let you keep watch over him." She took a few steps back towards the entrance she had entered. "Oh, and don't worry about me telling anyone. I have no interest in ruining your life after everything you've done to help the city."
With that last statement, she heard the steps grow faint in the distance. Only once it was silent did she stop holding back some of the emotions that had built up. She let a few tears fall for the memory of her friends. She acted slowly, she doubted the human would awaken for several minutes. So she grabbed the small flask of water in the pouch at her hip and carefully poured some onto his hair. She watched as the majority of the red washed out leaving it white once more.
X
Bell realized he was no longer in pain, as his mind started shifting to awareness. Which was a plus, he felt like he was on a cloud. 'Did I end up dying?' He couldn't help but wonder, the sky-blue eyes that had been so filled with worry came to his mind. He shifted, and suddenly the cloud was gone and all he felt was cold hard stone.
When his eyes snapped open, he was still in the dungeon. The stone walls were unchanged from what he remembered. He glanced to his left and could see there was a large magic stone sitting on the floor next to him. Turning his head to the right, and his eyes nearly popped out his head, there sat leaning up against the wall with knees tucked into her chest was the same elf that had saved his life.
His heart raced, and he immediately stood to make an emergency exit. His chest was burning with love, every pulse of his heart sent magma through his veins. "Wait." The elf called out in a beautifully soft voice, he felt her slender gloved fingers wrap around his wrist with the strength of Adamantine.
He gulped audibly, as the elf stood. Her eyes seemed to be devoid of life now that he was safe. "Wait…"
Bell tilted his head slightly, his mind raced, though not as fast as his heart. Without thinking he spoke, "Th… thank you for saving me."
The elf stiffened, as the pressure on his wrist tightened to a painful level. In a halting voice, she spoke. "No… Don't thank me, please… I… didn't save you. I… prevented further harm."
Bell blushed at the realization of what he had been about to do, he slowly and cautiously turned to face his savior. His cheeks crimson, he did his best to speak. "But… you did. I saw you… cut that minotaur…"
The elf shook her head and after a moment let go of his wrist. "NO… I DIDN'T NOT NOW, NOT THEN." The elf shouted, he could see… fear and self-loathing in her eyes. She walked past him, glanced down at her hand, and in a calm voice like nothing had happened, "You can have that stone. As my… penance." and took off running before Bell could say anything else.
Bell watched the elf run, he felt the warmth that pulsed in his wrist. "But… you did." The memory of her sword cutting his hunter in half was etched into his mind. Still, he reached down and touched the magic stone and placed it in his pouch. 'Maybe, but I'm not going to…' he thought. With a new fire and confusion, he left.
.
.
.
With his head cooled and calmer than his initial reaction, he went to the adventurer showers that had been stationed in the Tower by the guild. After that pit stop, he made his way to the guild, his clothes reeked of terror, and sweat plus they were stained with minotaur blood. But he didn't have a care in the world, if anyone could know who that elf was his advisor would.
.
.
.
Eina sighed as she clutched at her temple, Bell had just recounted the events of his misadventure. "Bell… how many times have I told you, adventurers shouldn't go on adventures. They'll die if they do. Keeping at a slow steady pace is best, especially since you are going at it solo."
Bell felt his excitement was about to burst free from his chest. "I know, but do you have any idea who it was that helped me?"
Eina sighed again, her eyebrow twitching. "No… Bell… I don't."
Bell could sense the anger in her tone. But was unable to apologize before the tirade unleashed itself. "BELL WHY DON'T YOU EVER LISTEN TO ME! ALL I'M TRYING TO DO IS KEEP YOU ALIVE!"
.
.
.
Half an hour passed and by the end of it Bell was scrunched into a tiny ball on the sofa, he was mumbling inaudible words. "What was that!" Eina huffed, despite seeming to be worn out at this point.
Bell flinched, "Nothing!" He responded clearly.
Eina sighed, "Bell listen, I want to help you have a successful future as an adventurer. I can't do that if you won't let me." Her shorter half-elven ears seemed to drop a fraction of an inch.
Bell gulped, "I… I know Eina… after today, I'll take your lessons more seriously." He scratched the back of his head.
Eina seemed satisfied by that, as a smile crossed her lips, "Good, now that elf that saved you. She didn't tell you her name?" Bell shook his head, "Did you fall for the elf?"
Bell nodded absentmindedly, then gaped, "Wait… Eina… I."
Eina had an evil smirk on her face. "Let's see you said she had sky-blue eyes. She had a slender build and was wearing a hooded cloak that hid any other features besides her ears."
Bell gulped and nodded. "Well Bell, I don't know anyone like that, but I'll keep an eye out… I'll also make sure they know how you feel if I do find them."
Bell wanted to faint at the thought, he looked into her emerald eyes, "Eeeiiinnnnaaaa" Bell called out, his face burned with the fury of a newborn star.
Eina chuckled, "Alright alright. Let's go turn your stones in."
.
.
.
Bell emptied the pouch into the tray, but as the minotaur stone dropped to the tray the both paused. Eina seemed to be surprised, but Bell regretted letting it fall so easily. He scooped it back into the pouch, "Not that one…" he whispered.
Eina raised an eyebrow, "Are you sure?" Bell only nodded, "Alright. Just remember to try to get a new weapon and armor before you go back into the dungeon."
The reminder of his lack of a weapon caused him to pause, 'Should I trade it in? But that feels… like a mistake.'
Before he could completely make up his mind the drawer snapped shut, sealing away the option in his mind. 'Hesitation…' he thought. "One more thing Eina, can you see if those other adventurers are safe? If you hear anyone say something about that."
Eina counted out the valis and placed a dozen coins into the tray before reopening it so Bell could claim his reward. "Hmmm, sure if I hear anything. I'll let you know."
Bell couldn't help the smile as he took off shouting. "Thank you, I love you!"
Eina blushed heavily at the pure nature of the unintentional confession. "Oh Bell."
Bell immediately exited the guild and started running his way down the main street. The sights and sounds of the main street echoed softly in his mind. Despite having been in the city for almost a month he hasn't grown to dislike the noise, quite the opposite he has grown to enjoy it even more.
Taking several narrow moss-covered alleys, he couldn't help but feel alive. His heart felt like it was burning after a minute and a few turns in the winding paths. A single thought ran through his mind, 'Why did she yell and run away? She did save me, No. No, I know for sure that she was the one holding the blade.'
He sighed, he felt conflicted. His heart burned for the elf that saved him, even though he didn't even know their name. At the same time, his mind was troubled, no matter how much he thought as he ran, no answers appeared. "No use worrying about it for now. I doubt I'll run into them again anytime soon in this massive city."
.
.
.
Bell slowly peaked through the door that led into the basement of Familia Home. Although those words were very generous considering it was the basement of a long abandoned church. One whose floor constantly leaked when it rained. "Goddess! I'm Home!" He shouted making sure his presence was known.
He could hear tapping as a tiny figure came running around from where the small kitchen was. "BELL!" His goddess shouted.
Bell braced his body as the tiny frame launched herself at him. "Goddess, I'm home." He repeated and hugged the tiny goddess.
Hestia smiled at the embrace, "Bell!" She shouted seeing the condition of his clothing. "What Happened!?"
Bell couldn't help but chuckle. "Let's eat, even if it's a bit early for it. Then I'll tell you when you're updating my status."
Hestia crossed her arms, and sighed deeply, "Fiinnee! Even if it is only three. It must have been important for you to end your day early. Well fortunately I have just the thing. I had such a great day at work, that I got a bunch of free snacks!"
Bell smiled softly, "That's great to hear Goddess! I was almost worried about what we were going to eat." He couldn't help but grimace at the remembering how they had to eat a bit of molding bread. He would take potato snacks over that any day despite how unhealthy they were.
.
.
.
They had a grand feast, eating their fill with the three left over. Bell had never been so filled with potatoes, but still, he smiled. "That was amazing!"
Hestia's head nodded proudly, "I made them specifically for this feast! Glad you liked them. Now Bell, off with your shirt. It's time for an update!" Bell obliged and took his brown coat and black undershirt off as his basic beginner armor had been destroyed.
Hestia watched, as he sat on the edge of the only bed. "I hope your story explains why you don't have any armor anymore. Also, give me your knife."
Bell grimaced, pulling out the remains of the dagger. A simple hilt with only two inches of metal remaining. "Sorry, but that got shattered today as well. I plan on seeing about getting a replacement tomorrow."
Hestia grimaced, "Alright. I'm glad we had a free dinner then." After a moment he felt his back ignite as her divine blood fell onto his back. He was used to it by now, but the first few times surprised him.
He felt as Hestia rubbed the drop into his back as the room began to glow a soft blue hue. "Hmm, let's see here," Hestia commented.
.
.
.
As Bell finished his story, leaving out how the elf had yelled and fled, he could feel the disapproval radiating off the goddess. "So you're telling me you didn't even get the elf's name? Here I thought you were obsessed with elves." He knew Hestia was teasing him, but the words still hurt.
He sighed, 'I regret telling her that, as well as the whole thing about how my grandfather wanted me to create a harem.' Still, he did his best to take her words lightly.
Still, Hestia continued, "I guess all your running really did wonders for your stats, you really are like a little rabbit."
Bell paused his thoughts, "Goddess please don't tease me like that. I got enough of that when I was younger."
Hestia crawled forward, "You know Bell… you don't need any elves and their ingrained hatred. I would advise you to look elsewhere."
Bell sighed, he knew she wanted what was best for him. But still… "Goddess, might I see my update paper?" He felt Hestia grab his shoulder, 'Remember the elf, her beautifully fierce eyes and how her thighs peaked out.' The thought caused his heart rate to shoot up even further. As the blush grew sharper, matching the color of his eyes.
Hestia leaned back, removing her hand from his shoulder, "You're thinking of that elf aren't you?"
Bell shot up, spine stiffening in surprise. "No…" the moment that word escaped his lips, Hestia's eyes widened in amusement.
She huffed, "Well… if you don't want to take my advice. Here." She pouted a bit and turned away, but Bell could tell it was an act.
Bell could only sigh as he glanced over his sheet.

Bell gaped at the increase, "Goddess!" It has been the single largest increase in his stats he has ever had. Then his eyes drifted to the smudge in the skills section. "Goddess, did I obtain a skill!" The thought filled him with excitement, it would be a first step to being the hero.
Hestia crossed her arms and sighed. "Nope sorry, it's empty as usual. My hand just slipped."
With that simple sentence, the bubble of enthusiasm he had at the possibility popped and left him feeling deflated. "Do you think I will ever gain the ability to use magic?"
Hestia turned to face Bell, "Even I don't know that Bell. If you read more, then maybe."
Bell now thoroughly deflated, stood and collapsed onto the couch that sat against the opposite wall across from the bed. The couch barely flexed as the old stiff cushion resisted conforming to his body. Despite being early he now felt thoroughly exhausted, "I understand Goddess, I'm gonna head to sleep early. I know I'll have a long day tomorrow."
Hestia spoke in a cheerful tone. "Good Night Bell!"
X
Hestia watched her only child begin to drift asleep, as she touched the smug mark. In a whisper so quiet she knew Bell wouldn't be able to hear. "Congratulations Bell, you finally got a skill." She glanced at the smudge remembering the skill. 'Cor Iustitiae. The ability to grow stronger, so long as you stay honorable and your determination is steady. Allies also grow at a measured pace based on their closeness.'
Hestia sighed, she was happy but also angry. 'How could some random elf make such a massive change in him on such a deep level that he would develop a skill? But not me, not the Goddess that took him in when he had nothing and gave him a home and a falna?' She looked as her child's chest slowly rose and fell, he was already asleep.
She knew the thought was petty, so she knew she wouldn't be bothered about it for long. Deep down, she was more happy than anything, she knew Bell's dream to be a hero and to help people.
An idea popped into her mind, she was tempted to sneak onto the couch with her child, but she sighed and crawled onto her bed. She glanced up at the stone ceiling, 'How can I help Bell? I don't know.'

Ryu didn't stop running, slashing through every monster that dared to approach her. While she was very heavily distracted, she was strong enough that even if something did hit her it would be a very minor injury that she could heal easily enough with a quick chant. So she relied on her instincts while her mind felt like it was tearing.
She remembered the look of admiration that the young adventurer had, 'No… Don't… you don't want to… admire someone like me.'
Three floors flew by in almost a blink of an eye, 'Don't… Thank me. I've never saved anyone.' Her mind forced her to think that way, the loss of her allies had caused scars so deep that she doubted would ever fade.
The Hellhound launched at her, fire already beginning to form between its jaws. Ryu blinked, and the wooden sword was already piercing its chest shattering the crystal hidden within. 'Why did I run? Is it because I… couldn't or didn't want to accept his words? Lady Riveria was the one who saved that human. Why did I reach out to stop him? Why did I touch him? Are my instincts blinded by his similarities to Alise?'
A part of her heart burned to have that connection to another again, to be around someone special, someone she knew she could trust without any hesitation. Someone she could stand next to as an equal. Sure she had several people she could rely on now, and the one who saved her from that alley when she was ready and wanting to die, but even if she is her best friend… it's not the same.
Five minotaurs all charged her at the same time, but still she ignored them. The edge of her wood sword decapitated two in a single fluid motion, a third had its knee shattered as she lashed out with a kick. The other two swung the crude axes, which she ducted and shifted to her left. Taking the opening her sword moved at a speed minotaurs couldn't react to. As the axes clattered to the ground, hands still attached.
With all of them either dead, crippled, or unarmed she went through one at a time destroying their magic crystals.
The image of the white-haired human filled her mind, with just as much self-loathing and self-recriminations. But that all changed when she reached her destination, her mind was blank as if it had shut down. She stayed there watching for hours until an imaginary clock in her mind ticked over a new hour, giving her enough time to travel back and still get some sleep. "Time to return, I have to be awake early tomorrow."
She muttered one last pointless prayer and made her exit. She moved just as quickly up the floors as she did going down. But now, her mind was empty. Devoid of the hatred that was inside her.
.
.
.
Ryu collapsed onto her bed. She felt exhausted despite still having plenty of energy in her limbs. She did her best to prepare for the nightmares she knew would come, knowing it was a pointless exercise. Still, she did, she focused on her breathing as she got into a comfortable position on her small bed.
'In… out… in… out.' She silently told herself, she felt her mind and body grow heavier with each cycle. In half an hour she finally passed out.
.
.
.
She awoke the next morning feeling refreshed, it took her a minute to realize why. "No nightmare?" She asked herself quietly. She didn't want to have one, but she had grown so used to them that it was a surprise. This fact, put new energy into her steps as she prepared for the day.

Freya watched, as a soul entered the dungeon, one that she had been watching for a long time. One she found fascinating, "So much justice, yet so much darkness… She is beautiful." Freya would normally be excited by this, but seeing such a dichotomy in a single soul excited her.
But that soul seemed boring now when she compared it to the brilliant soul of a rookie who had just started. His soul was clear, untouched by darkness shining with the purity of a new soul or one that hadn't been reborn before. She remembered how the sight of it for the first time left her in such a state that they had to replace the cushion of the throne she sat on.
But something had shifted in that pure blinding soul, something that she had never seen before. When she observed him leave the dungeon, his soul still shone brilliantly but it had flecks of green in it. Like the powder in a snow globe. They shifted endlessly in repetition. The change both disappointed her but also excited her even more than normal. She was hypnotized by the shifting hues of green.
She watched the new changes for hours until something caught her attention. Her former favorite had returned from the dungeon. She instantly grew wet at the changes to that soul. It was subtle, but with her specialty and how familiar she is with it, she was able to easily identify the difference.
The green justice and black darkness still swirled around fighting for dominance, but there was now a soft inner glow of white. It was so subtle, that it could easily disappear but the potential that glow held. That potential caused her fluids to ruin another cushion. Freya panted heavily, "How… how could I… draw those two closer?" It was obvious to her eyes that something happened between them with the brilliance of the human's soul and the change in the elf's soul.
She clapped her hands softly, she hadn't realized that they were damp with her fluids, not even three seconds later a massive form shifted to stand next to her. "Ottar, have Horn draw me a bath. I need to cleanse myself again."
The giant gave a soft bow, "As you wish my Lady." Despite his size, the footsteps were silent just the way she liked it. Plans were already forming in her mind, 'First things first he has to grow stronger.' She smiled lustfully as she imagined that pure, brilliant soul quivering in fear and determination to overcome any challenges not for themselves but for another.

Bell shifted awake, his eyes were less than an inch from the multi-colored cushion. He sighed and shifted to look at the bed, he could see the lumpy shape of his Goddess curled into a ball under the blanket. He couldn't help but smile. He felt grateful that Hestia had taken him off the streets. She was like a mother to him, one he never had. Someone who always wanted the best for him.
He sighed but didn't waste any time getting ready early in the morning. Putting on his brown jacket and darted out of the room, grabbing only his bag. He didn't have any gear anymore, his knife and chest piece were shattered in the attack.
Bell adjusted the pouch on his hip, "Yeah… I should have enough for a simple weapon. Just strong enough to last until I can make some more money." He sighed at their financial situation, "Not much we can do about it for now, we're only starting out."
.
.
.
Bell was darting down the myriad of back allies and main streets, his rumbling stomach revealing that he had forgotten to grab something to snack on. He sighed, "It's going to be a long day." He quietly complained as he rubbed his stomach. Then he felt it, an intense gaze that sent his skin crawling.
His head snapped around, only to see a cute girl who took a few steps back. She had silver-gray hair and eyes, she was a little bit shorter than Bell. A simple green dress covered the majority of her body, to Bell it seemed to look like a waitress's outfit.
"Eep." Leaped from her lips, as Bell turned to face her.
Bell took a calming breath, "Sorry… I guess I'm just a bit on edge."
The girl clutched at her heart for a moment, Bell noticed the slightest of blushes on her cheeks. "It's… alright. I was about to call out to you anyway." She held out a small crystal the size of his thumbnail. "I noticed that you had dropped this, and wanted to return it to you."
Bell couldn't help rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment, "Ah sorry… I could've sworn I turned them in yesterday." He ignored the Minotaur Crystal, it wasn't his to turn in either way.
He held out a hand and the female gently placed the shard into the palm of his hand. "By the way my name is Syr, Syr Flova it's a pleasure to meet you. Are you an adventurer? Where are your weapons and armor? You're not planning on going into the dungeon just like that right?" Each question Syr launched at him, she took a step towards him, as Bell took half a step away.
Bell waved his hands in front of him. "It's… a long story… they shattered yesterday and I'm planning on getting replacements today before I head into the dungeon."
Syr's eyes seemed to sparkle, "I…" she was cut off by the complaining stomach of Bell at his continued mistreatment of it.
The space between them fell silent for a solid few seconds. Syr started giggling, "You shouldn't go on an empty stomach. Wait here for a moment." Before Bell could say anything or even twitch an eyebrow, Syr was gone darting into a business right next to them.
Bell glanced around, he didn't want to be rude and just leave. 'I'll reject whatever they might bring out. I can't start owing random people things so soon after starting.' He told himself. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed something. Someone was watching him, his eyes flicked towards them. The only thing he saw before they vanished from sight, was pointed ears and sky-blue eyes.
Seeing them reminded him of the one who saved him, this caused his heart rate to increase by a noticeable amount. "Mr. Adventurer! Hello!" His eyes returned to focus on the gray-haired girl. She had been waving a hand in front of his face.
Bell shook his head, "Right… sorry I never introduced myself. Bell, Bell Cranel." He observed that the girl was holding a small package. A square-wrapped pure white cloth.
"Here take this." Syr halfway demanded, as she thrust it into his hands. "It's my morning rations, and before you say anything I want you to take it. I would feel guilty if you were to die due to an empty stomach while running around." Despite her serious tone, she had a small smile and a slight blush on her cheeks.
Bell panicked, he was right about to deny her, his stomach growled again sealing his fate. "I… understand. I'll make this up to you somehow."
Syr twirled her hair around a single finger, "Well if you want to repay me, I work at this pub." Bell read the sign and it had the words "Hostess of Fertility" emblazoned on the hanging piece of wood., "Why don't you stop by tonight and order something? I can be your waitress."
Bell groaned at how easily he had been hooked into the situation. "Alright, you cheeky girl. I'll show up later tonight."
Syr seemed to grow excited by the prospect, cupping her cheeks in her hands and shifting in place seemingly uncontrollably. "Good! I'll hold you to it." She halfway danced up the three stairs to the entrance of the building.
Bell couldn't help but sigh, "Well so much for making any money today. Now… a weapons store."
.
.
.
It took an uncomfortable amount of time to find a location that sold cheaper weapons. It was a clienthrope with short brown hair and darker skin who pointed him toward the location. It was a small dingy shop that was tucked a few doors into an alley off the main streets. The only reason he even noticed was the slight glimmer of a metallic sign, with the symbol of a hat with a single feather hovering over a sword embossed onto it.
As he entered the shop, which had a sign saying they were open, he seemed to sweep a three-inch layer of dust on the floor. It burst free causing Bell to sneeze, he hesitated but after a moment pushed into the small shop.
There didn't seem to be a counter to make purchases, "Hello!" He softly called out, but he didn't see or hear anyone. So he started looking at the products on offer. Most were still outside of his price range. The only options available were two daggers both looking almost identical to his former starting knife, a short sword in a slightly elven style, an axe that looked to be dwarven, and a longsword with a slightly curved blade.
The item that caught his attention was a simple-looking elven short sword. 'If I… ever have to face a Minotaur again… or anything else of that size a dagger won't be enough. Anything larger would be too heavy for now.'
He lifted it and gave it a quick test swing, it felt lighter than it should which concerned him. It was a single-edged weapon that had a slight curve and a small hook where a pommel should be.
With a sigh, he glanced the blade over; he wasn't trained in weaponsmithing or quality identification. He didn't find any strange abnormalities in the blade. It looked straight and unblemished. "Hmm, it should be good enough."
He glanced around, there was still nobody in the building. So he approached the counter and saw a small bell attached to a handle, so he decided to ring it.
The sound of clanging rang out from the other side of a wall, "Coming!"A feminine voice spoke out.
It took a full three minutes until a female elf rounded the corner. "Oh… you're not who I expected. How can I help you?"
She was slightly shorter than Bell, with long golden hair and deep green eyes. He smiled gently, "Yes… sorry I was given directions to come here to buy a weapon." Bell shifted and placed the short sword on the counter.
The elf raised an eyebrow, "That's an interesting choice. Do you mind if I ask your name?"
"Bell Cranel." He spoke back to her, as he shifted, grabbing the small pouch at his hip. He noticed a look of surprise on the elf's face. "What's wrong, miss…"
Her ears twitched slightly, "Nothing, anyways my name is Laurier. Mr. Cranel, that short sword will be… 24,750 Valis."
Bell, reached down and counted out the funds. All he had was 25,000. With his pouch considerably lighter, he picked up the sword and shifted it into the sheath Laurier pulled out from behind the counter. "Thank you… Miss Laurier."
Laurier smiled, "Oh, and be careful in the dungeon. It would be a shame if you were to die before you accomplished your dream." She twirled around, her blonde hair flaring out a touch, and started making her way back to the back room. "Well… back to finishing…" Her voice was muffled and indistinct as she passed through a heavy curtain.
Bell held out his hand, he wanted to say something but couldn't. He was so stunned by the comment, he lost his opportunity. With a sigh, he shrugged, attached the sheath to his belt, and made his way out of the business… "That… was an interesting establishment… I'll need to remember this location if something else unfortunate happens."
It was already noon when Bell arrived at the tower. So he decided to eat before he entered. Inside the small box, there were six sandwich halves, each with a different set of fillings. He grabbed the first one, and took a small whiff, 'It smells fine.' Despite getting the food for free he was suspicious. No, a more correct statement was because he got the food for free he was suspicious.
All and all, they tasted just fine. One with a strange sweet sauce was probably his favorite. He felt a little overfull from the food, but otherwise, he felt fine. "Time to get down there." With more than half the day already gone, he would have to focus on money, especially if he was going to take Syr's bribe.
.
.
.
He sighed as he landed on the fourth floor, there hadn't been very many monsters on the earlier floors, but that didn't bother him. He knew the first four floors were often scrubbed clean of any monster from the hundreds of novice adventurers. He drew his new sword, the way it fitted his hand felt almost perfect.
He moved down the tunnel to his immediate right. Traveling down, it only took a minute until he found his first encounter of the dive, it was a trio of dungeon lizards, two on the floor and one clinging to the wall. He watched them carefully, he was outnumbered but that didn't really bother him. It was a familiar sensation at this point.
The moment they looked away from his position he charged. The first lizard began to turn, to face the noise but was killed instantly as the elven sword sang through the air severing its head in a single motion. He wasn't expecting that and it caused him to stumble. The second lizard leaped from the wall and landed on his chest; he couldn't support the weight and fell as his head slammed into the dungeon floor. His vision bruised, but he swung on instinct; he felt his hand sink into the soft flesh of the lizard.
The lizard became a dead weight on top of his chest, he forced his legs under the creature and shoved it, sending it over his head with a crash. The third launched itself at his still prone form, it bit down on his left arm drawing blood. It hurt, but not as much as last time. It only took a single cut to pierce its skull.
As its dead weight fell on top of his torso, 'Oh come on.' He silently complained as he forced the corpse off his body. He simply lay there for a second, taking in deep breaths now that his torso wasn't being crushed. He knew Eina would be furious if she found out about him just lying there but at that moment he didn't care.
After a few seconds, he stood up and carved out the stones, causing the corpses to explode into dust. He coughed but shrugged off the bit of ash that began to dissolve rapidly. "Alright… Lesson number one, at least for now be prepared for this blade to cut cleanly." Out of curiosity, he felt the edge. He winced as it cut his thumb, but something felt off. It was only a bit sharper than his starting knife. "Hmmm… I'll have to think about this later. For now, I have to focus on money."
.
.
.
Bell entered the guild hall, he could see Eina manning the counter like normal. He half hoped she didn't see him, but that lasted exactly two seconds. "Bell!" Her voice echoed through the near-empty hall.
Bell winced, glanced over to Eina, and gave a small smile. "Let me turn in my stones." He halfway shouted back, but not nearly at the volume his advisor had.
It only took a minute, but he received 5,450 Valis making his total 5,700. He knew he would probably have to go without armor for a bit, just because he had to help support his Goddess. He took a deep breath and approached Eina. "Afternoon Eina…"
Bell watched as Eina eyed him up and down, he noticed the small gleam as she spotted his sword. "Well… well… well. I knew that elf had got your fancy, but I didn't expect your new weapon to be elven in origin."
Bell blushed a bit, "No… that was purely coincidental. I had to find a shop with cheaper weapons as I just started. It was this, a near exact copy of my beginner knife or a dwarven axe… I figured, having a weapon with a small amount of reach would be a good idea, and it was just within the funds I had." He padded the hilt of the sword.
Eina didn't look convinced, she simply sighed. "Well… it's not really my business what type of weapon you use." Bell sighed in relief, "No, what is my business is how you don't have any armor. Not a single piece! Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Bell flinched away at the rising temper of the half-elf. "No Miss Eina. I just don't have the money at the moment. I'm planning on getting some more soon."
Eina eyed him dubiously, "How much do you have?"
Bell gulped, "About… 5,700 Valis." His mind raced with a single thought. 'Please don't offer to give me money.'
Eina sighed, "You know… if you turned that Minotaur stone in you could afford at least some armor right?"
Bell flinched but nodded. "I'm… sure I could. But It's not mine, they said it was their penance… but that doesn't make sense. So I'm going to keep it safe until I either get an explanation or can give it back to them." His spirit rebelled at the idea of selling it when he didn't deserve it. It would be nothing more than stealing at that point.
Eina sighed again and rubbed her temples just above their glasses. "I understand where you are coming from, but she gave it to you…" She looked him straight in the eyes and sighed for the third time. "But I can see that you're not going to change your mind on the subject, so I'll drop it… for now. Regardless, I found the answer to the question of the other adventurers."
Bell's voice rose without his conscious effort. "Oh! And are they alright?"
Eina smiled, "They are, according to the report. They saw a white-haired adventurer purposely draw the minotaurs' attention away from the group. Then they ran to get help, and on the way, they encountered an elf who told them the situation. Before they could even explain fully, she took off at a startling speed. They didn't stop until they got to the guild and explained it to a colleague of mine." She gave a small genuine smile. "In short, you saved the group from a certain death at the risk of your own."
Bell blushed a bit and scratched the back of his head. "All I did was run away. Really nothing worthy of praise."
Eina only shook her head. "That's… never mind. I thought you'd like to know. Remember you have lessons tomorrow. So take it easier in the dungeon."
Bell bowed and took a step back, "Of course, Miss Eina. You know I wouldn't miss it. But I got to return before Goddess has a panic attack." He took off, at a brisk pace.
.

"I'm home, Goddess!" Bell announced the moment he entered the basement of the broken-down church. He braced himself like usual, but nothing happened. There was no noise of thumping footsteps, no cry of excitement. "Goddess?" He called out again as he entered the small room.
He glanced around, there were no signs of any break-in or anything. He did notice a small folded piece of paper on the counter that blocked off a portion of the kitchen. He let a breath of relief escape his mouth and moved deeper into the room. He read over the letter and sighed.
…
Bell, unfortunately, I won't be able to join you tonight. I was invited to a party by the owner of the potato snack carts and I couldn't exactly refuse. But worry not, I did get some extra food today while I was out. Feel free to make yourself something. I don't know how long I'll be out exactly, but I don't expect to return until after you normally go to sleep. Again, sorry for the sudden notice. I hope you have a good night.
Hestia."
…
"Well… I was planning on inviting Goddess to the pub with me, but I suppose that's just how the world works." With a sigh, he slipped out of his worn clothes noticing a small hole on the back he never noticed before. "I'm going to need to get more clothes soon…" He let out a defeated sigh at his lack of funds and proceeded to clean himself with the ice-cold water that he had access to.
After he was satisfied with the fact that he was clean, he put on another pair of clothes that were almost identical to the others. It was all he had, strapping the sheath to his new sword on his hip just in case trouble found him, he left for the halfway black mailed dinner.

"The Hostess of Fertility… uh." He was standing outside the building and a boisterous sound of dozens of people escaping the building. He took up the first step when the door was suddenly thrown open and a body was thrown out nearly hitting Bell.
A female in a green server uniform stood at the door, she was a human with short-cut brown hair. "Oh sorry, I didn't sense you there. Are you a customer?"
'Sense? Does that mean she's an adventurer?' He nodded and cleared the pointless question away. "Yes… I promised Syr that I would show up." He scratched the back of his head nervously.
The female nodded, "Well… wait here for a moment, I'll get her real quick." She turned and entered the establishment without another word leaving Bell to stand in silence. He could've sworn he heard her voice shouting something, but whatever it was was lost in the sea of other voices.
Less than a minute passed until Syr peeked her head out the door and waved Bell closer. "I was starting to grow worried that you wouldn't make an appearance. Please come in." Bell hesitated for a single moment before sighing. "Seating one!" Syr shouted as Bell entered the building.
Syr guided Bell to an empty section at the bar, where he presumed single or pairs of customers sat. Syr waved over to the corner seat and gave him a menu. "Please sit, I'll return in a few minutes. Is there anything I can get you to drink?"
He could see a playful smile on her face, 'Why do I get the feeling she's popular here?' He glanced at the options, "Just a simple water."
Syr pouted a bit but nodded "As you wish. I'll be back."
Bell sat alone, he glanced around taking the interior of the establishment. Everything seemed to be made out of nice wood. The wooden hue mixed with the torch and candlelight helps to make the pub feel homily. "I can see why this place is busy." Just the sight caused him to remember the years he spent with his grandfather.
He sighed and looked around observing the people, 'Seems like most are adventurers. The serving staff is also all female it seems. I'm sure that helps to draw in customers.' He glanced at each serving member for a brief second trying to not be a creep. The brown-haired human, Syr, and two cat people one with black hair and the other with brown.
"Isn't it amazing? So many people are gathered." Syr's voice stunned him for a second but he took a breath as a glass of water was placed in front of him.
"There certainly are a lot of people." Bell agreed, watching the crowd with Syr.
"It's one of my favorite things, watching people that is. Every person has a unique story, even if the broad strokes are the same. Every personality is slightly different. Especially among adventurers, you never know when one might catch your interest." Syr commented absentmindedly. A short second passed as she seemed to remember where she was. "Right… sorry I suppose I should do my job, did you decide on what you wanted?"
Bell panicked slightly, he hadn't even glanced at the menu. He quickly skimmed over the prices and chose the cheapest option. "I'll take this. Sorry… I don't have a lot of money at the moment."
Syr seemed to slump a bit at his words, "Shame I was hoping to make a lot tonight. That's alright though, I'm just glad you showed up. Right so the noodles, alright it'll be out in a minute."
Bell sipped at the water slowly, like it was a fine wine. It tasted great, well as good as water could taste. His mind flashed back to this morning, he remembered seeing those sky-blue eyes. But no one he had seen had eyes that matched. "Maybe… I was just imagining things." He muttered, truth be told as much as he wanted to meet the elf that saved him again. He was nervous to do so, he didn't want to get on her bad side with careless words. But at the same time, he would speak the truth of the situation as he sees it.
Ten minutes passed, and after getting reassured that the water refills would be free he continued sipping while he waited. Five more minutes passed as more customers funneled into the pub. The waitresses were careful to always leave one specific table open. It was a large table, with enough room for twenty people.
Syr clacked down the plate while he observed the large empty table. "Sorry about the wait, one of our waitresses seems a bit nervous to come out tonight. Mama Mia will take care of it."
"Mama Mia?" He quietly questioned. Looking around and not seeing anyone new on the staff.
Syr nodded, "She's the owner. She would normally be out here, but with a large party coming in soon she's in the back preparing."
"Who's the large party?" Bell asked halfway distracted as he dug into his food.
Syr sighed in annoyance, "It's the Lok…" her voice was cut off as a shout was made at the entrance.
"Nyaow seating twenyaty." The brown-haired cat girl called out, as silence emitted from the party entered the pub. Bell knew several of them without much thought. He was still new to Orario but even he had heard of the Loki Familia.
Braver Finn, Nine Hells Riveria, Elgarm Gareth, Sword Princess Ais, and several other names he recognized. It was his first time seeing most of them in person when the Gray-haired werewolf he sighed. The werewolf refused to even give him a chance to speak to Finn or Loki.
"Sorry, to leave you Bell. But I got to start helping them. I'll send someone to check on you in a bit." Syr gave a small bow and went to the massive party and started taking orders with the two cat girls.
He sighed, 'I wonder what it would be like to be in a Familia like that…' He shook the thought from his mind, he was glad Hestia had taken him in even if it hadn't been easy.
Another ten minutes passed and he had just finished his water again and was almost done with the food. "Ex… excuse me, do you want a… refill?"
It was a vaguely familiar voice, "Oh sure I…" He turned to see who had offered. It was an elf, one with short green-blonde hair with sky-blue eyes. 'Is she…'
The elf seemed to twitch nervously, her ears shifting slightly. "Sorry… Do you want a refill?" she spoke in a clearer voice.
Bell nodded and placed the cup on the counter. He knew a lot of elves were adverse to touch and he didn't want to put her in a bad position. "Yes… sorry, but can I ask… you something?"
The elf flinched slightly, it was barely noticeable. "Sure… although, there isn't much information I… can offer."
Bell opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by a loud boisterous voice. "Riveria! Tell me what happened to that pathetic novice!" The werewolves' voices echoed to his ears.
Riveria sighed, "Nothing happened Bete."
"You elves and your damn pride. The brat was nearly dead due to the minotaur, and that other elf…" He shouted drunkenly, despite it having been less than half an hour.
Riveria's eyes narrowed. "And whose fault do you think that was? It was our fault it escaped."
Bell flinched, without knowing any detail he could tell it was about him. He noticed the elf waitress's eyes narrow fractionally as she listened to his shouting.
"It was his fault for getting in the way, his luck must be terrible. That elf though… the way they begged you to help heal that worthless blood-covered rabbit." He laughed like it was a common joke.
Bell felt a brief bit of anger, but it was largely snuffed out by how the elf had acted. He noticed a large female dwarf wearing a blue uniform come around the back watching the party. Their sharp eyes seem to catch every detail. Bell noticed the elven waitress clench her hand tightly, but take a couple deep breaths. That single action all but confirmed it in his mind.
"Come-on Bete, Riveria. We're here to enjoy our successful return from the depths of the dungeon." Finn spoke up, his youthful features seemed exhausted already.
But the werewolf ignored their captain. "That elf smelled like they had bathed in blood. I bet…"
Bell noticed that the elf in front of him took a step backward, nearly backing into him she seemed to look nauseous.
Riveria stood and lowered her voice into a menacing tone. "Bete… this is your last warning. Another word, and you'll regret it."
Bete ignored her, "The scent was so strong on them that I bet they probably killed their own allies."
The person Bell assumed was Mama Mia, spoke in a whisper to the Goddess of the Familia. Bell couldn't hear them, but judging by the reaction from the Goddess it wasn't pretty. He felt the slight weight of the elf back into him. He watched as the elf nearly collapsed. He did what he could and swiftly stood up and without permission grabbed the elf's hand and lowered them into the chair he had been sitting in.
He glanced over to the owner, "Your Mama Mia right?" Mia looked at him and nodded. "She doesn't look too good, you should get her to the back before something happens."
Mia got a good look at the elf and nodded, "Syr get over here!"
Bell whispered so only the elf could hear. "Hey… are you alright? Look at me… are you alright."
The elf did look at him, but there was no light in her eyes. He stood and faced the werewolf, he knew he was nowhere strong enough to do anything but at that moment he didn't care. Still approaching, he noticed Riveria's eyes widened in recognition and she shook her head violently warning him not to.
"Hey!" Bell shouted, getting Betes' attention.
Bete turned to face him and started laughing when he recognized who was calling out. "Oh ain't this perfect, the bloody rabbit himself. What you got a problem with me speaking the truth?" He snarled at Bell, which put a tension of fear in him. But he couldn't let that slide.
"Yes! Where do you get off speaking like that? They saved my life, while you seemed to have done nothing. Just like the worthless wolf, you are." He regretted the words the moment they left his mouth and the fury that burned in Bete's eyes. He could smell the alcohol oozing off Bete.
"What was that you worthless… piece of…" Bete didn't finish his statement, instead, Bell felt pain. Almost as bad as when the Minotaur had punched him.
Bete had grabbed Bell by the neck and kicked him in the stomach, sending him flying outside the pub like a piece of trash. Slowly he stomped towards the entrance. "Bete! That's enough!" Finn ordered. He glanced over to Riveria, "Go check on him."
Bell watched and heard all this through the swinging doors. His blood burned and boiled at what the wolf had said, he tried to stand but failed. Then there was the sound of a fist hitting something. The door swung open to reveal Bete collapsed on the ground unconscious with Mia standing over him.
Riveria sighed as she approached Bell, "Really I tried to warn you. How are you feeling?" She asked as she kneeled next to Bell.
Bell felt like vomiting, but he held it in. "How… are you so calm? With what he said… that elf was…"
He felt a soft finger over his lips to silence him. "I know… and I'm furious, but that's for another time. Now tell me. How are you feeling?"
Bell couldn't help the slight blush that crossed his face, but he backed away. "I'll be fine, I can tell he was holding back." Bell forced his body to stand and he ran, he knew he was about to say and do something he would regret. Only halfway to his destination did he remember he never paid.

'If I want to help people, if I want to protect people. If I want to stop things like that from happening, I have to grow stronger.' Those thoughts raced through his mind as he ran to his destination. The Dungeon. It was late, he was tired and now he was hurting from the single kick he took not to mention the burning around his neck. Fortunately, it didn't break any bones.
He slashed at the lizard that leaped at him, he didn't even notice that the blade slashed straight through and into another one. His stomach burned with the growing bruise, even as he felt a small chunk of his arm get removed by a war shadow claw. He retaliated with a swift stab through the single eye of the shadow.
He huffed and took a deep breath, he felt the small stream of blood leaking down his right arm causing his grip to feel slippery on the weapon in hand. But he ignored it, his blood was still boiling and he had to release it before he returned. The injustice of the situation bothered him far more than the few cuts and bruises he has now.
He took a single step and a long tongue shot out wrapping around his right arm, and he was pulled off his feet. "Damn it!" He roared and pulled his left arm up grabbing the sword's pommel and brought it down on the tongue. It cut through, but not as smoothly as he expected.
The frog shooter yelped in pain as Bell darted from the ground and launched himself at the frog, piercing the eye in a single motion. But it didn't die, it started to thrash around. Bell wasn't ready for that and was thrown into the wall with bone bruising force. All the air was forced from his lungs causing him to start coughing. But he wasn't done, after a pair of surprisingly calm heartbeats he kicked off the wall and ran the length of the blade down the full length of the squishy body. It burst and a wave of gore splashed Bell and the walls around him. He grimaced before stabbing the magic stone, breaking it.

Hours passed, how many he wasn't sure. He looked around finally gathering his thoughts enough to realize how stupid he had been. His entire body burned and ached due to the hundreds of small cuts and bruises. He didn't have any healing potions, no form of healing in general. Still, he stood at the entrance to the seventh floor, he started to make his way down the stairs. But his left leg gave out tripping and falling backwards on his back.
He winced as he rubbed at the left knee, feeling a patch of oozing liquid. "I… can't. I'll die A pointless death. I… if I'm going to die, it's going to be helping someone." He groaned and forced his body to stand. "I think it's been adventurous enough for tonight. I'm sure… Goddess is worried." With great effort, he started to make his way out of the dungeon, nearly fainting more than once but the grip on his weapon never loosened.
X
Hestia paced, the sun had already risen and there was still no sign of Bell. She could tell he was still alive, due to his falna still being intact but that sensation did little to comfort her. There were many things worse than death.
Another hour passed, and she was growing concerned. She had just slipped her sandals on and moved out of the basement when she swore she heard the sound of scraping like leather on stone. So she rushed out of the entrance of the church and nearly fainted at the sight in front of her.
Bell was limping, his left leg seemed unresponsive as he dragged it down the narrow street to the church. There were hundreds of small lacerations across his body, she could see a bruise around his neck and what looked like a broken finger on his left hand.
Still, Bell marched onward to his home, she ran to help him. Worry filled her heart, if it was someone that did this they would regret it. "Bell! What happened!" She shouted as she approached wrapping an arm around his chest, she didn't even care that blood was staining her pristine white outfit.
Only then did Bell seem to notice where he was, he glanced around nearly sightless and groaned as he fell to one knee and his leg seemed to give out dragging Hestia down with him. She winced as a sharp corner of a paving stone dug into her shin, but she didn't complain. "God… dess… I… want to help… people… I… need to grow… strong… er." He collapsed completely to the ground, slipping from Hestia's grasp.
She panicked and tried to support him, but she wasn't strong enough to lift Bell. For the first time, she cursed her body in the lower world. All she could do was drag Bell into the church, she knew that probably wasn't helping but she couldn't leave him out in the open like that.
She managed to pull him into a shadowed portion of the collapsed church, she noticed that even after falling unconscious he never let go of the sword in his hand. She could tell it was of elven design, and she smiled a bit. "You must really have fallen for them… I'm happy for you." Before she could think too much about it, she ran down the stairs and opened a drawer in the nightstand at her bed. A single ruby vial sat in there, she didn't hesitate. Instead, she rushed up and uncorked the potion and gently lifted his head forcing the potion down his throat.
She watched as many of the cuts seemed to scab over but not all of them. She hesitated, but nodded. "Wait here Bell… I'll be back with help."

Bell's eyes shifted open, to see a god with blue hair and eyes hovering over him. Miach, he knew was the gods' name, "Good, looks like he is waking. Hestia, come here." He noticed that he was in the familiar basement that was his home. He tried to sit up, but Miach put a hand on his chest. "No Bell, stay down. I have no idea how you managed to get so far with so many injuries."
Bell complied and did his best to lay back down, his body felt numb and cold. Hestia appeared in his line of sight with a few tears in her eyes. "Bell, what happened? Who did this?" There was obvious worry in the tone she was using.
Bell opened his mouth, but nothing came out but a light croak. He felt a small cup be placed against his lips as cool water entered his parched throat. He coughed, that sent a flood of pain through his body. He tried to speak again but this time he was successful. "Nobody…" That was all he managed.
Miach narrowed his eyes, "Bell, the markings around your neck came from a humanoid hand. Not from some monster."
Bell sighed, "That one yes… but everything else… no."
Hestia looked at Miach, "Miach, is he going to be alright for now?"
Miach sighed but nodded. "Yes, the extra potion I brought managed to heal his broken finger and close the rest of his injuries. He just lost a lot of blood, he's going to need at least a day to rest. Hestia… if there are any changes, let me know alright."
Miach stood and took a step back to leave. "Th… ank you… Lo… rd Miach." Bell managed through the haze of a fading consciousness.
Miach looked back and gave his all to a familiar smile, "Try to get some rest. I would advise not going into the dungeon for at least two days. Your body needs to recover from the blood loss."
Bell wasn't able to respond, as he watched Miach leave. It took a few moments before Hestia gently hugged him. "I was so worried when I returned and you weren't back." He could see a few tears falling down Hestia's cheeks.
It hurt to see his Goddess crying, but he didn't regret his actions. He did what he thought was right, he won't regret that. "I'm… sorry Goddess." He managed, he closed his eyes, and tried his best to relax. Judging by the amount of space he had, he guessed they had placed Bell onto the bed.
Hestia pulled away, "Bell, I'm going to update your status. Sleep, I'll leave the update on the bedside table. I've got to get to work soon. So I might not be here when you wake up again."
Bell nodded, and with Hestia's help, he managed to flip onto his stomach, revealing his marked back. He realized at that moment he didn't have a shirt on, but he was too tired to care. He felt the divine ichor fall onto his back as his mind faded to the world of dreams.

Hestia watched her only child sleep, her emotions felt rattled, but she would get answers from Bell the next time they talked. All she wanted was for Bell to be healthy and happy. She already knew better than to expect that to be an easy task, his receiving that skill didn't help. She made her mind up, the next time she updated his status and he was awake she would tell him. She would explain why she hid it and she hoped Bell wouldn't hate her.
She watched the numbers flick by as she adjusted the numbers. She might be a novice Goddess but she could tell just how strong that skill was just by this single update alone.

Hestia couldn't help but sigh, despite the smile on her face. "Well, Bell… Maybe you can achieve your goal. If your heart stays like it is…" Hestia wanted nothing more than to stay and wait for Bell to wake up, but she was already going to be late as it was. She might be a Goddess, but she still had to abide by the rules of the world. "Hopefully they'll take it easy on me once I explain." She placed an edited copy of the sheet on the bedside table. Give Bell a small pat on the back of his head, "Sleep well, Bell." and took off to her work.

Ryu's eyes shifted awake, she didn't know what time it was, how she got into bed, or when she fell asleep. She glanced over to her side and saw Syr sleeping kneeling on the floor, her head placed on her crossed arms on the edge of the bed. 'What happened?' She wondered, the last thing she remembered was that stupid drunken wolf talking about a bloody rabbit. Then almost nothing, she remembers being lowered onto a stool by… somebody.
She sighed, "I'm not going to get off easily…" She quietly muttered.
The sound of her speaking must've drawn Syr's attention as she roused and slowly lifted her head, eyes half-lidded. Her eyes shot open when she noticed that Ryu was awake. "Ryu! Are you alright? How are you feeling? Let me get you some water." Before Ryu could even answer Syr darted off, she could hear the sound of steps on the stairs not far away.
"Syr…" Was all she managed with a sigh. But she didn't complain, she appreciated her friend helping her even if she didn't know why exactly.
While Syr was gone, she examined her situation. "Physically I seem fine, just exhausted. I don't feel any different mentally either."
A handful of minutes passed until Syr opened the door slowly, with a clear glass of water. "Here let me help you." Syr spoke softly, putting a hand behind Ryu's head.
Ryu wanted to argue, but she felt too tired to fight back. She felt the glass be placed against her lips, as cool water ran down her throat. It took a few seconds but she swallowed all of it. "Syr…" Ryu coughed lightly at the liquid but continued despite it. "What… Happened… I remember the wolf saying something about… a bloody rabbit… and that's about it."
Syr looked at her surprised, "So… you didn't notice? It was the white-haired human, Bell who lowered you into his seat. He was the first to notice that you looked awful, he let Mama know and yelled at Bete. I'm guessing that you were the one who saved him from the minotaur?"
Ryu shook her head. "No… I didn't, All… I did was… prevent further harm by killing the minotaur… it was Lady… Riveria that healed him and saved his life."
Syr sighed, "You're very stubborn about this you know. You did save him, if you didn't step in he would've died. Why can't you see that?" Syr paused, but Ryu couldn't answer. Instead, she averted her eyes, "Ryu… regardless. Bell stood up for you, Bete was saying some nasty things and Bell got angry for your sake. Safe to say Bete didn't like that, he picked Bell up by his neck and kicked him, sending him out the front doors."
Ryu nearly shot up at the news. "Is he alright?" There was a hint of alarm in her voice that surprised her.
Syr nodded, "Yes… although he took off when Lady Riveria tried to help him. He didn't even pay for his food."
Ryu sighed, "Tell Mama I'll pay for it… It's the least I can do since he got injured due to me." Ryu stared up at the wooden ceiling of the pub. The image of the smiling white-haired human flashed before her eyes. "Just who… is he? He was a fresh adventurer, I doubt it's even been a month since he started out."
Syr only shrugged, "I don't know. I noticed him this morning and invited him to eat at the pub. Next thing I know he is standing up for your honor. Seems like you have an admirer. Especially considering he was carrying an elven sword."
Ryu's ears turned a shade of pink, but she knew her best friend was just teasing her. "No… I hope not. I'm… not a good person to admire. Syr… thank you…"
Syr shifted her head, her ponytail shifting behind her. "Why are you thanking me? I didn't do anything. I just put you into bed."
Ryu shook her head negatively, "No… Thank you for watching over me. While I slept, that is."
Syr giggled lightly, "No Ryu, if you want to thank anybody. Thank Bell, if he wasn't there you probably would've collapsed onto the floor. I don't want anybody to think of you as weak. Next time you see him, try to talk to him alright? At least hear his thoughts on the matter." Syr stood and patted her knees. "I'm going to let Mama Mia know that you're alright. Try to get some sleep alright."
Before Ryu could say anything, Syr vanished out of the door. She quietly closed it behind her, Ryu didn't even hear Syr going down the stairs. "Bell… what a strange human… so much like…" Ryu cut herself off. 'No… don't compare them… that wouldn't be right.' But Ryu listened to her friend, and she closed her eyes. She felt exhausted despite having slept for at least a few hours. Bell was the last person she thought of as she fell into a deep sleep, and once again she didn't have any nightmares.
(1) Had to update the stats, as I forgot to add the portion earned in the day before he went to the Hostess for Dinner. Sorry about that.
