I don't own the Breakfast Club
A/N: Thank you for the reviews thus far! I wanted to add that the first half of this chapter may be a little bit silly. I had a bit of difficulty getting in the mindset of a rebel, but I tried my best. Let's see where it goes from there.
Enjoy!
John had given Claire an option that he knew would make her undecisive. With people like her, keeping them on their toes was the only solution. Just like her group of friends that tested one another's loyalty, he thought he'd ought to do the same for her. How loyal was Claire willing to be to her new group of friends? A group where John deemed to be much better than those girls that she hung out with?
John walked around the perimeter of the school as he took out another cigarette from his pocket. He struck the match against the brick wall, successfully lighting it on fire. "Ey Bender!" John slowly looked up when he saw three boys gather around him.
John smirked at the sight of his friends Damien, Axel, and Mitch. It may have been just the four of them but that was good enough for John. For such a small group, there was no hierarchy and that was fine for all four of them.
"What do you want?" John asked the trio but wound up greeting them with a series of high fives before they all relaxed. He knew what their next questions were going to be, concerning Saturday.
Damien fixed the collar of his denim jacket and tapped the railing with his finger. "We're headed to the record store sometime this week. I gotta get my hands on Screaming for Vengeance."
"That album's three years old man," John reminded him, "at least get something more recent."
By 'getting' John knew that was equivalent to stealing when it came to Damien. Of all the records stores that they had gone to, Damien had a flair for grabbing items and not getting caught, no matter how many times John told him not to do it. As for John, he couldn't risk getting caught considering what would happen to him.
Damien gave John a shrug of his shoulder. "My old man hates that thing. He'd rather listen to that jazz music that no one listens to anymore. He'd be in for a shock when he heard me blasting that cassette in the house."
"So, you coming?" Axel asked.
"Depends," John answered, "when are you planning on going?"
Damien looked from Axel and then at Mitch. "My folks are away for the weekend. Guess it'll be Saturday."
Of course John thought with a nod of his head. Typical of his friends to do something when their parents were not around. John wished that he had that freedom. "Can't," he answered them, "I gotta go to detention this week."
"Again?" Mitch asked him, "John that's the third Saturday this week."
John shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. It wasn't because he didn't want to hang out with his friends, but some of the activities that they suggested were some that he couldn't partake in. In addition to that, he didn't want to mention to his friends that he had Saturday detentions for the next two months. "What's it to you, Mitch?" John asked him.
Sensing the irritation in John's voice, Mitch backed down from making any more remarks about his detentions.
John blew a plume of smoke in the atmosphere. He didn't say a word for a mere minute. It was none of their business to know of John's whereabouts and he didn't know how to make it any clearer to them. Damien and Axel understood, so why was Mitch prying?
Axel furrowed his eyebrows when he noticed a shimmering object on John's ear. "New studs, John?" he asked as he took a better look at the earring, causing John to pull away from him.
"What're doing man?" John asked, "ever heard of personal space?"
Axel let out a light chuckle. "Sorry man," he apologized, "I caught it shining. That looks like a diamond…carats and all. Where'd you get it?"
John didn't respond but flicked his cigarette to the ground and put it out with his foot.
"How many carats is it?" Damien asked him.
"How the hell should I know?" John shot back at him, "don't you have anything better to do than staring at my ear? Like I said," he held his arms to his sides, "personal space."
Damien rolled his eyes at John's attitude. "All these Saturday detentions are getting to you man," he commented.
John would have agreed if this last Saturday wasn't like the others. However, he had always found something to do during those days to keep his mind occupied.
Axel looked from John and then to Damien, "speaking of Saturday detentions, I heard Standish was in there for ditching class."
Mitch scoffed, "some people get all the luck. If it was one of us, we'd get suspended for a day…or two."
Talking about the preps wasn't something that his group was foreign to. There were days when all four of them enjoyed tearing into the group, but John didn't feel like conversing with any of them about it. He felt Damien hitting his arm with the back of his hand, causing John to flinch on instinct.
"Was she there with you?" Damien asked him. "What was she like?"
"What makes you think we talked?" John asked him. "I ain't wasting my time with girls like her."
"But you would though," Mitch jumped in, "don't tell me it hasn't crossed your mind? I've seen the way you look at those girls when they pass by. You tear four of them apart but don't tear down the redhead."
Mitch would have been for the shock of his life if he saw John lashing out at Claire on Saturday. Then he would have been for a bigger shock if he caught John kissing Claire. "Hey," Mitch said as he threw an arm around John's neck, "if something it is going on and you get bored of her, save some for me."
John felt the muscles of jaw twitch. He grabbed Mitch's wrist and pulled away from him, resisting the urge to socket him in the face. "Keep your hand off me!"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Damien exclaimed as he held his arms in front of Bender and Mitch.
John heavily breathed as he stared at Mitch. He took a step forward, just enough to look at Mitch squarely in the eyes, though he could still feel Damien trying to restrain him back.
"The hell is wrong with you?!" Mitch yelled as John.
John managed to walk around Damien and approached Mitch with a dark look in his eyes. "You crossed the line once, Mitch. I'd hate to see you do that again…and that goes for you two," he said as he looked up at Axel and Damien.
The surge of adrenaline that John had felt was staring to dissipate. Suddenly, he felt a bit exhausted. It wasn't long until Mitch decided to back away from John with Axel and Damien following him. They would come around, they always did, but this wasn't the first time that Mitch had spoken out of line like that.
However, John couldn't help but feel like he had made his feelings evident about Claire to the group. The way he reacted towards Mitch, was enough of a clue for his friends to figure out where he stood with her…which was also one of the reasons as to why he hadn't discarded her diamond earring. The school bell finally rang, indicating that class was over but not close enough to the school day finishing for the day. John didn't move from his spot as he saw groups of students heading outside for a small break before heading for their next class. That was until he caught sight of a flash of blonde hair passing by the group of students.
Susan Quimby held tightly onto her sketchpad as she swerved past a group of students. She suddenly stopped when someone reached out behind her and gently grabbed her wrist before quickly letting go. Susan let out a gasp when her wrist was grabbed, but when she turned around, she smiled to see Brian.
John smirked at the scene in front of him. Who knew that Brian would have that type of courage to do that? He couldn't make what they were saying but their body language was evident enough. Both were shy around each other as if they didn't know which steps to take next. It was almost laughable to him…but even he had gone through his first romance, where it wasn't all it was meant to be. He pulled away from the wall and approached Brian and Susan as they were in a deep conversation with one another.
"But I thought you were grounded for two weeks?" Susan asked as she looked at Brian with a mixture of glee and concern for him.
"Grounded for two weeks?" John asked, catching a bit of their conversation as he approached them. "That's a bit much even for you, Nerd."
On instinct, Brian and Susan pulled apart from one another as if they weren't supposed to have this interaction, which John found a bit odd. "Didn't mean to interrupt your little meeting."
Susan gave John a small smile. "No interruptions John," she said to him, "we were just planning on meeting together later."
Brian had suggested that they meet after school hours out of impulse. Spending the next two weeks at home made Saturday detention seem more like a dream.
John looked from Susan and then to Brian. "You thinking of breaking out of your punishment?" he asked Brian and then pointed at him, "you got guts, Nerd."
"I wasn't thinking!" Brian exclaimed, but now that he made the proposal, he didn't want to back out from it. Anything was better than staying at home.
That's a first John thought.
"Well," Susan spoke up, "it's not a total loss. You could tutor me with physics."
"Tutoring is not really hanging out," Brian told her. Even though it would be wonderful to help her with her work, it didn't exactly seem like a romantic time to spend.
"No," Susan shook her head as she chuckled at Brian's naivety and nudged him with her shoulder, "we can use physics as a code word for our meeting."
Either I am just tired or I have no idea what I'm doing Brian thought to himself as he realized what Susan meant.
"Come on Big Bri," John playfully rolled his eyes to the other male, "even I understood what she meant. Look," he said and pointed to Brian, "you need help getting out of that freaking house for a date?"
Brian blushed at that word. "It's a meeting," he clarified for John.
"Meeting, date same damn thing," John waved his hand dismissively in the air. He looked over at Susan, "what's the plan, Picasso?"
Susan was caught off guard by John's offer. "Well, I was thinking of dropping by Brian's house and we'd leave for a place to do our 'studying,'" she said in air quotes.
John held his hand in the air. "Let's stop right there." During Saturday detention, the way that Brian implied about his parents, made John realize that there was no way in hell his parents would allow Brian to go out, let alone with a girl. "That's your first mistake right there. You ain't gonna get anywhere."
Brian let out a puff of air, "then what do you suggest we do, Bender?" he asked him.
"Your parents got you wound up around their fingers that they're barely letting you breathe," John told him. "If you want this to work, you're gonna listen to me. When do you plan on meeting?"
Susan and Brian exchanged a look. "Five maybe?" Brian answered him.
"Fine," John continued, "you got a physics book, Picasso?" he asked Susan. She reached inside her bag and pulled out her physics book and John took a hold of it. He flipped through the pages, ignoring the looks that Susan and Brian were giving him, and squinted at the numerous amount of equations that flashed by his eyes. "Here," he said and bookmarked a page, "entropy, we're gonna be relearning entropy."
"Bender what are you suggesting?" Brian asked him, "and we learned about entropy months ago."
"You parents know your class syllabus too?" Bender asked Brian. "Here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna drop by your house at five. We're gonna pretend to go to the library, when you're gonna meet up with Picasso for your date."
Both Susan and Brian were shocked at the plan that John proposed. Susan thought that it was kind of John to help them, but how well would their plan go? She was glad that her grandmother was lenient with letting Susan go where she wanted. Her only hope was that Vernon didn't drop the house for a 'surprise' visit.
"Does that work for you…I mean for both of you? I don't want to get anyone in trouble," Brian asked. He could feel that there would be a flaw in the plan. His mother was notorious about Brian lying and if they were caught, he might as well be grounded for the rest of his life.
John shrugged his shoulders at Brian. He didn't care what trouble there was because there was always a way to get out of it.
"I can do it," Susan nodded her head to them with a confident smile upon her lips. "We can meet up in that diner."
"And what will we do with Bender?" Brian asked.
John held his hands in the air. "I ain't crashing your date. When you're both through, I'll be in the corner of the diner," he turned on his heel but then turned his attention to Brian before he left, "and Nerd, make the date good. What I saw just now was pathetic."
