Chapter 24
Star Wolf's New Job
"Wolf, what are you doing here?" Fox asked when he walked up to Star Wolf with Bill. He had noticed Wolf's presence when everyone was gathering for Sabre's introduction speech a little while ago. Falco was the only one with him because Slippy and Peppy went to the bathroom while Krystal and Dash went to congratulate Sabre for his speech.
"And why does Lizard-Face look like he's gonna scratch off someone's skin right about now?" Falco asked mockingly. "Oh, wait. He's always like that!"
"Watch your beak, Dumb-Bardi!" Leon said with a growl while turning to face him. "If you're not careful, you'll actually end up losing your feathers yourself! And you don't want that to happen, do you?"
"Gee, I sure don't want that to happen do I?" Falco said sarcastically as he and Leon walked up to each other, glaring in each other's eyes.
*Ahem*
The duo stopped arguing and turned to Bill, who was gesturing to them to stop fighting while in the military base.
"Enough with the fighting you two," the dog scolded. "We're here to coexist as civil adults, not to go at each other's throats! So stop fighting, or I'll take this matter to General Pepper myself!"
The bird and the chameleon turn to look back at each other. They're still not happy to see each other and want to beat the crap out of each other, but Bill was right. They could definitely get themselves into a lot of trouble if they did that, possibly costing each other's jobs from going down the drain. So, to avoid any trouble with the General, they reluctantly said, "Fine", then turned away from each other.
"Get over yourselves ladies," Wolf said with a tone of irritation before turning his head over to Fox. "Anyways, it's good to see you again Fox."
"Indeed, it is," said Panther charismatically. "Panther is very pleased to see you again, Fox McCloud. Your noble acts of giving us job offers has given us the faith that we desired in our time of need. Out of both me and Leon, we give you our thanks."
"It's no problem," Fox said with a smile. He turned back to Wolf. "So that's why you're here? Your new job is working in the military?"
"Not entirely," he replied with a shrug. "The three of us are working in the mailroom here…"
The two Star Fox members just stood there in silence for a few seconds until Falco, obviously, starts to laugh upon hearing the news of where Star Wolf are working here in the military base.
"Falco, stop that," Fox said, bumping his fist onto the falcon's arm to gesture him to behave.
"Ow!" he said as he was still laughing a little. "I'm…I'm just…playing Fox. It's just…seeing them work in the mailroom is not something that you would expect them to do. It's unbelievable I tell you! Unbelievable!"
"Well, don't be rude," Fox said. He turns back to Star Wolf. "Sorry about him."
"No worries," said Wolf. Though, he does have a point. Totally unexpected that the three of us would be working in a mailroom instead of an army, we're usually not those who stand still in one place."
"I can see that…" Fox said.
"So, you guys just got here or something?" Falco asked in a punky tone. "Need a map to get around the place so you don't get lost?"
"We are perfectly capable of taking care of ourselves, Bird Brain!" Leon retorted before Bill got between them again.
"I will be guiding them to the mailroom and give them the instructions they'll be required to follow in order to keep this job," the dog said. "It'll be a good start to their redemption and their start to a better life."
"If only it would be less annoying for us though," Panther said. "I don't think I'd be comfortable with being constantly servailanced while delivering other people's mail in order to earn people's trust…"
"Seriously?" Fox asked. "You're gonna have guards keep an eye on you when you work so you don't slack off or steal something?"
"Yup," Leon answered. "Which is one of the reasons why I'm not so happy about the job."
"At least be happy that we've got the job anyway Leon, it'll be much better," Panther assured his reptilian teammate.
"Good luck with the new job Leon," said Falco with a teasing tone. "You'll probably be as good at stacking those boxes as you are of getting your ass kicked by me!"
Leon growled at Falco for the comment he gave off. He was lucky that it's Star Wolf's first day of work, otherwise he would've started to pummel his face by now.
"Falco," Fox said to the bird as he sounded like he was gonna scold him. "What did I say about behaving with others that we're not fighting with?"
"Aww, c'mon Foxy," Falco said. "I'm just having a little fun!"
"It doesn't matter," Fox replied. "We're making peace with Star Wolf now, and we're giving all three members a chance to make amends and start over, so you better start getting used to having them around for that."
Falco wrapped his arm around Fox's shoulder. "Ok, fine Mom! I'll try not to get under their skin and annoy them so much. But I must warn you, getting on people's nerves is a specialty of mine."
"Worse than Panther, you mean?" Wolf said as he joined in on their conversation.
Few of the guys, minus Panther and Leon, began to giggle a little for that remark. Panther felt offended and Leon still felt annoyed at Falco, but they ended up joining their giggle fest too, enjoying the peaceful moment they're having.
Bill looked at his watch and said, "Well, it's time for us to go to work. So, we better get a move on."
"Aww, really? I still wanna pester Leon some more," Falco jokingly complained.
"Screw you, Bird Poop!" Leon shouted.
The others laughed as they said their farewells and good luck for a brand-new day, hoping the best out of it.
...
A few minutes later, the Star Wolf team was in the mailroom in their new uniforms.
Bill was in front of them explaining what they should do when they're down here. As he was explaining, Wolf and Panther listened closely while Leon had his mind elsewhere while his gaze was straight ahead. Still angry at what Falco had said minutes ago, the chameleon had the urge of wanting to kill the pheasant with his bare hands and maybe have his face covered with blood too. As of right now, he wanted to be free to do what he pleases; murder his enemies in the most sadistic ways possible. Sometimes when he's having moments like this, he'd wish that the Lylat wars never ended and kept on going so he could continue having a murder spree.
Leon's thoughts were halted when he realized that Bill ended his explanation by saying the phrase, "So, understand what you need to do?"
The three of them nodded, though the chameleon didn't hear or care about anything the dog said that they should do. But since he had to do the job, he would just mimic whatever Wolf and Panther were doing to get this over with quickly.
Once Bill left the mailroom, three dog soldiers identical to him entered. They were the ones tasked to watch over Star Wolf during their working hours, each one of them carrying one box. Each guard had a neutral look, since they'd been warned that even though they have done terrible things in the past, Star Wolf is not allowed to be victims of any kind of abuse or intimidation by any member of the military. And if something were to have happened, and it was one of the soldiers that were responsible, they who committed the fault would be expelled. The reason for that was that Star Wolf would straighten out their paths, not to make them worse.
The three soldiers placed the boxes on the table where Wolf, Leon and Panther were, which had several cards that they had to classify one by one. Once the boxes were opened, each of the soldiers stood behind each member of Star Wolf to keep an eye on them. While that was happening, Panther turned on the computer in front of them, since they were gonna have to enter the data of the important mail they received there. There was enough mail between the three boxes to keep them busy until departure time. So now, they had to get to work.
Leon goes first; he would take care of opening the envelopes before handing them over to Wolf. Next, Wolf would check to see what each letter contained before passing the info to Panther. Finally, Panther enters the data of each envelope in the computer for safe keeping. Once they each started doing their part, they quickly adapted to the rhythm of what they had to do from now on.
...
Meanwhile, in another part of the base, some army soldiers were on their way to the training grounds. Even though it was a normal day, and there wasn't any kind of attack on the Lylat System since the Aparoid invasion, they had to be on their toes in case any sudden attack might happen right here on Corneria or any one of the nearby planets.
Among those heading to training were Bill, Fara, Miyu, Fay, and Sabre. But this would be a different day, as the Star Fox team would be in attendance. Since they would be the ones to carry out the training by legends that day.
As the soldiers sparred, standing next to Fox and Falco, Dash couldn't stop taking in everything. He was amazed at everything he saw before his eyes. Seeing so many soldiers gathered who were in charge of protecting the innocent made him feel so excited, as if he were a child. Although, considering his past, it wasn't surprising why he felt this way. He saw how everyone took the training seriously, including Sabre as it was his first day on the job.
In the office that overlooked the training area was General Pepper, who was accompanied by Fara's dad, Phillipe Phoenix, both of them were observing the training and looking specifically at the new recruit. He definitely had great potential for the army, and everything Bill had said about him was true. It was as if Sabre was destined to be a soldier, like his fighting skills were in his genes. And that was something that the dog and the fennec fox noticed from the beginning.
Once the physical exercise part was over, next came flying practice. So, all the soldiers started to board their respective Cornerian Fighters for the next part. The members of the Star Fox team lifted their keychains by the keys to their respective ships and each of them pushed a button that activated their autopilot feature, so they'd bring them to move on to the next part of the training routine.
In about 5 minutes, each Star Fox member appeared in Fox's Arwing II, Falco's Sky Claw, Slippy's Bullfrog, Peppy's Arwing, and Krystal's Cloud Runner. Almost everyone else went to their respective ships, including Sabre and Bill entering their respective Cornerian Fighters, Fara entering her pink Arwing, Miyu entering her purple Arwing, and Fay entering her light blue Arwing.
Out of almost all the members of the Star Fox team, everyone headed to their ships. Fox stayed behind a little, as he saw Dash a little sad.
"Is something wrong Dash?" Fox asked.
"Well," he began with a sad look. "It's just that…I would like to be in flight practice, but I don't have a ship and I don't have the permit to…"
After thinking about it for a bit, Fox got a little closer to him and said, "How about you come with me on my ship like last time, and you can learn how I do it by watching me."
Dash was excited and partly blushed to see that he and Fox would be together and alone on the same ship. He began to realize that the feelings he was beginning to develop for Fox were genuine.
"Yeah, I'd like that," the monkey said.
"Let's go then!"
Fox and Dash walked towards the Arwing II and got in it. Once inside, they made contact with the rest of the ships to begin the flight practice. After all the ships took off, they began to fly through the air.
Here ends the twenty four chapter. I hope you liked it.
