Lost In Purple

Chapter 4: Party Time (Part 1)

"Did you just say you're going to the party Miss Melanie?" Bruiser whispers with bug eyes and his mouth wide open in amazement.

"Yeah. Do you think I'll be out of place there though. I have no idea what to do at a party, or how to act, or... you know," I murmur in distress.

Bruiser and I turn our heads back to the front of the classroom to see Professor Knight trying to figure out who is talking while he's teaching. Luckily two tall monsters decided to sit in front of us today and gave us a bit of cover. All the students are looking around trying to see what was wrong, but have no idea what's wrong. I instantly understand that Professor Knight has extremely good hearing and probably heard a part of the conversation and decide to shut my mouth for the remaining amount of time we're in class. Fortunately, it seems as though he can't work out that it was the two of us.

Bruiser acts like the other students and looks around while handing me a small notepad. On top of scaring, he could make a good thespian cause that was really discreet.

"No, ROR parties are for anyone. If it comes down to it, I'll be there for you if you need me," Bruiser wrote.

Professor Knight continues his lecture on "The Uses and Misuses of Drool." Not really something I would like to use in scaring so I keep dozing off here and there, but it's something I should know regardless.

"Ok, Thanks. We should probably pay attention from here on out. I didn't know how sensitive Knight's hearing is," I write back.

Class continues for almost another hour which drags on. Normally I would feel fine in class, but I'm all stressed out yet excited to go to my first 'real' party. At least that's how Johnny put it. The bell finally rings and Bruiser and I ecstatically pack up only to nearly instantaneously sprint out of the Scaring School.

"Hehe-hehehe, you're going to have so much Miss Melanie. The music is awesome and the people are fun!" Bruiser says while panting heavily.

"I really hope so," I say anxiously grabbing the end of my long hair and pulling it over my shoulder.

"You'll be fine. Johnny knows you too, so if anything happens he'll be sure to be there to knock someone out if he has to," Bruiser adds in an attempt to sooth my anxiety.

I give him a smile that's filled with uncertainty. I don't really want something like that to happen but this is college, so there's bound to be some crazy people at the party. I break down a little bit more and ask, "Is there a dress code or something? Should I maybe bring something?"

Bruiser does his usual twitchy maniacal laugh. "Miss Melanie its not a fancy party or anything. You don't need to make yourself look pretty or even bring something at all. Although I'm pretty sure all the guys would love to see you spruced up."

Bruiser elbows me a couple times. I'll admit that I haven't looked that great recently. I've really just been waking up and going to class while wearing my normal clothing. No putting on any makeup, no spending more than a minute choosing clothes that match or look great together. It's just been the basics and it's been working for now.

"Maybe I should. Do you by chance know any goodwills or cheap clothing stores nearby?" I ask Bruiser.

Bruiser looks confused. "I'm not sure. Maybe you should ask the PNK girls. They might be able to help you out."

Bruiser walks me down to Frat Row. Thank god I have someone who visits the fraternities often because I'm pretty sure I would have been ambushed at this point if he wasn't here. I don't know how he convinced me to get a 'makeover' from the PNK girls. There probably going to turn me into such a valley girl which scares the ever living crap out of me. I could never imagine being or even looking like one of those plastics you see in high school dramas.

"Miss Carrie!" Bruiser swings his arms all around trying to get the PNK members attention.

Carrie gasps and opens the front door but only peeks her head in. I can hear a couple squeals echo out from the house and a couple light thuds. The 6 PNK members then come rushing past the grand pillars of the house and down the white marble steps.

"Oh my gosh Melody, it's so good to see you again!" Britney howls in my direction.

I wave nervously and watch as all the girls surround me. "Hi. I, uh, came to see you again. Like I said."

"Yay!" Britney says bringing her fists up to her face and moving them left to right very rapidly.

Bruiser jumps into the conversation in order to cut to the chase.

"Miss Melanie here wants help getting ready for the party tonight and you were the first ones to come to my... uh... mind" Bruiser mentions sounding kind clueless. Weird. I didn't think he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. He must just be a really smart scarer rather than a generally smart person.

One of the other PNK girls gasps and jumps up and down in a thrilled manner. "A makeover! We haven't done that since Taylor joined!"

Bruiser laughs creepily while waddling towards the ROR house. "Have fun Miss Melanie!"

I meekly say goodbye and look to the PNK members once more.

"Melody, how do you know all these awesome people? First Faust and now Bruiser. Who else do you know" Britney asks me putting her hands on her hips. The other 5 girls laugh innocently.

I know Johnny but I still can't decide whether or not that something I should admit to.

"That's pretty much it. As for Bruiser, I usually sit him in scaring class," I respond with a sudden burst of energy.

"Awwww. He must really appreciate that," Carrie jumps in. I just blush a little and look down to the ground.

"Well anyways, what do you need us to help you with?" Britney asks leaning forward and smiling.

I give myself a couple seconds to think about it. I don't want to have the look they have, because... it's too much, but I also don't want to feel like every other girl on campus. "Well, I know you girls are really fashion savvy. Also all the clothes I have right now are pretty casual and boring, so I was wondering if you maybe have some pointers or ideas for me?"

All the girls then take their turn to think about it. "Well, I don't think you should copy our style since pink doesn't really seem like your color. So, how about you tell us what kind of style you actually like? Think back to high school." Carrie ponders.

"Um, I did kind of go through an emo phase if I'm being honest. I found myself being very stand-offish and nihilistic. I also wore a lot of black and never really did my hair or anything. I didn't really find solace in conforming with everybody at school," I reminisce.

"Hmm. So are you looking for that exact look or vibe, or are you looking to be a bit... brighter?" Britney questions for clarification.

"Personally I was hoping for both. I kind of want the dark and tough look, but at the same time I want a beautiful, antiquated look like you girls," I explain sweetly.

The 6 PNK members all look at each other like they have the same idea. Two of them put their hands over their mouths and laugh, three of them jump up and down excitedly, and one sways their hips from side to side in happiness.

"I think we can help with that," Britney grins, "But before we start, I should formally introduce you to the girls."

I nod in understanding.

"As you know I'm Britney." She then points to the one with light purple hair and skin and says, "That's Naomi." She grabs onto the arm of the one with dark blue skin and purple hair, "This is Heather." Britney jumps over to the one with dark purple skin and pink hair, "she's Taylor." Britney then hugs the one with dark purple skin and red hair, "this is Crystal," and then finally shakes her hands towards the one with pink skin and red hair, "and this is Carrie, our president."

I happily wave to and introduce myself to each of them. They all also comment as to how pretty I am. I really don't know what to say because I just considered myself to be a normal wolven monster. I'm starting to believe that I have a self-confidence issue.

"Now, for this to work Melody, we're thinking that we need some help from HSS. Is that ok?" Carrie asks.

"Oh yeah, sure," I reply with interest. I don't really know how they'll efficiently help me since I'm not a full blown goth. The situation is also kind of similar to the Rush Week party where I feel like they'll just try to tear me apart mentally.

Carrie sends two of the PNK girls to fetch someone from the HSS house and they return with two horrifying looking girls. "You, like, totally owe us for this Carrie." The large purple slug-like one with dark pink spikes across her body and one eye says with disinterest and emphasis on her vowels.

"Of course. Melody this is Rhonda," Carrie introduces pointing to the purple slug, "and this is Sonia," she says pointing to the blue snail-like monster with long black hair and wearing a black studded jacket.

"Uh, Hi," I mutter trying to hide my emotions.

The two HSS girls look at each other with narrowed eyes. "Ugh...Why do you need us exactly?" Sonia scoffs.

"We need help picking out some darker stuff for Melody here. You guys know that style better than any of us so we figured you would be more helpful. I also know that Mr. Worthington is expecting to hang out with her at the party tonight," Britney beams.

I'm surprised to hear Britney mention that. I never told any of the PNK's anything about even meeting Johnny. That must have been why she asked me if I knew anyone else, she was trying to confirm some suspicions. Maybe it was Bruiser who said something, unless... Faust knows. The HSS girls' expressions change slightly. "Well... we would like to go and grab some more clothes ourselves. Also she is pretty. Not gonna lie I'm kind of jealous," Sonia groans.

"Oh you're actually going? I figured I would of had to of bribed you somehow," Carrie proclaimed.

"Ugh... we're not assholes Carrie," Rhonda hissed.

"I know!" Carrie disclosed with a large toothy grin. "Come on let's go!"

All the girls end up taking me to an expensive looking clothing store over in Westpine that specializes in variety of styles and special accessories. Figures everyone at MU shops at places like this. All the girls funnel in excitedly, while I stay behind them and watch them all split up and begin searching. I told them about how I can't really spend very much considering that I've always been of one of the poorer monsters in Monstropolis. Carrie proceeded to tell me that they haven't been shopping recently and have a mountain of money to spend on clothes, so she told me that they'll buy me a bunch of clothes I like because she considers me to be an honorary sister since many girls don't take them seriously these days. I also mentioned to Rhonda and Sonia that I had a phase back in high school so it's not as if I won't like what they find or do.

Carrie takes me to the changing room and then goes off on her own to find some things. It takes about a half an hour for all of them to come back. The PNK girls seemed to have grabbed a bunch of hair styling supplies and makeup whereas Rhonda and Sonia grabbed many different kinds of clothes that remind me of high school phase.

"We've come to the conclusion that you're more of a punk rock girl!" Britney sings.

The PNK girls spend their time styling my hair along with putting on a little bit of makeup. After what seems like forever, I eventually get to try on all the clothes that were picked out for me. I finally change into an outfit that makes my eyes go wide. I stare at the mirror and look up and down a couple of times. I have black velvet boots on that reach the tops of my ankles, black jeans with a couple of rips in them along the fronts of my thighs, a black tank top underneath a dark purple shirt that goes transparent in some spots to make a detailed rose shape, and a cropped black cardigan that remains unbuttoned to go over everything. My hair has also been expertly curled at the ends and there's a crown braid on the back of my head. I feel like I'm some sort of dark princess.

I walk out of the changing room to see everyone's opinion. Rhonda and Sonia high five each other while staring at me emotionless and the PNK girls all just stare at me with smiles on their faces and mouths dropped.

"Yeah I think this is what I was looking for," I say a little embarrassed.

"We'll be sure to give you a bag of similar clothes when you go back to campus then," Rhonda says in a stereotypical goth tone with a smile, "As for your hair and makeup, that's on you girlfriend."

I quickly walk up and hug Rhonda real quick. I realize that she probably doesn't want to be touched and back away swiftly. "Sorry, I got a little emotional."

Rhonda rolls her eyes, "Don't worry about it girlfriend. I've been hit by bigger people than you."

"By the way, there's one last thing you could do," Sonia adds, "Since there's still a couple hours, you could maybe dye your hair. I would suggest a blue. It would complement you magenta scales."

"Do you really think it would look good?" I ask grabbing the ends of my hair.

"Ugh, maybe. I don't know... that's up to you," Sonia scoffs.
