The two girls make it to the rooftops of the buildings to stay out of the soldiers' path. Enid was a bit faster than Ellie was and a tad bit more agile. Enid looked over her shoulder to glance at Ellie, who was lagging behind a bit.
"Move that ass, Ellie!" she shouted with a smile on her face. Enid was determined to make the best of this bad situation by spending as much time with her best friend as she could.
They jumped over the gaps between each building and slid down some of the slanted roofs. Eventually, they came across the roof of a mall, where they stopped. The roof had a glass dome with a large hole inside of it.
Ellie caught up with Enid, more out of breath than the black-haired girl. "Holy shit... when did you get so fast?" she asked, holding herself up by her hands on her knees.
"Had time to improve them while you were gone," Enid said, walking over to the wall of the mall, sitting down at the edge of it with one leg tucked underneath her other leg. Ellie sat down with both legs dangling off of the edge.
"Okay, Ellie. Be real with me. Do you ever think about the future?" Enid asked, looking at the view of the city ahead of them. Ellie looked over at Enie and she raised her brow at her.
"The future? You mean with spaceships and stuff like that?" she asked innocently. Enid smiled at Ellie before looking back at the city again. "You're so cute. But no, I mean what's gonna happen with us in the future?" Enid replied, glancing down.
Ellie nonchalantly shrugged her shoulders as she gazed at the cityscape, her hands firmly planted on the ledge.
"Not much to think about," she said.
"Ellie... I did say that I've been wanting to get out of this place since I got here. I don't want to be turned into another soldier where they're telling me where to shoot and where to shit. The second you turn sixteen, they stick a gun in your hand and turn you to one of them. You of all people should understand how I feel about this," Enid explained, sharing her beliefs on how she felt about becoming a soldier.
"But what else is there?" Ellie asked her, unsure what she meant. Enid rubbed her freckled face and sighed. "I don't know, but there is one thing I do know. You remember how you've always wanted to ride a horse?" she asked, pushing herself back up.
Ellie stood up with her and said in surprise, "Yeah, why?" "Follow me," Enid replied, walking over to the hole that was in the glass dome. Ellie followed her towards that hole, jumping down in it to get inside the mall.
