Read on, readers. Chapter 6 awaits.
Chase stared at the backpack and pile of curriculum books lying on the ground. Jay and Nya had just bought him a few first day of school items.
He slowly put the heavy textbooks and binders and pencils in his black bag. It was very early in the morning, 6:05 sharp, so he spent his time packing his bag for school and brushing his teeth.
He went downstairs for breakfast. Kai was awake and eating a pudding cup.
"Hey, Chase," he greeted, stuffing another spoonful in his mouth. He swallowed, then asked, "Ready for your first day of school?"
"I think so," Chase replied, opening the fridge and grabbing a pudding cup. He peeled off the lid and stuck a spoon in the soft, yogurty substance.
Chase ate quickly, wanting to have time to think outside before he had to head out.
He stepped outside after he finished breakfast, stretching his body in the brisk morning air. It wasn't the warmest day today, but he didn't mind.
With his coat around his upper body and his backpack flung sloppily around his shoulders, he made his way to the nearby pond.
He sat on the bank, admiring his reflection in the still water. He swirled his hand in it, watching the water's reaction to the slight disruption.
Nya came up to him and sat next to him. "Ready for your first day of school?"
Chase chuckled. "Kai said the exact same thing word for word."
"Oh," Nya said. Then she shrugged. "Sibling thing, I guess."
"And yeah, I am, to answer your question."
"Great." She stuck her hand in the water, matching Chase's small twirling motions.
Chase was suddenly pulled into her thoughts.
I'm so glad Chase is going to school. Now we won't have to worry about him or keep him busy during the day.
The thought echoed in his brain and unfortunately, it rubbed him the wrong way. He suddenly got up, fighting back tears, and ran off down the rocky slope and into the woods.
He could hear Nya calling after him, shouting his name but sounding confused.
Chase ran all the way to the same stump where he saw the fox. He figured out that when he was touching the same water at the same time as someone else, he could hear their thoughts. But he didn't quite know why.
On the stump, he sat with his head in his hands, feeling hurt, as if the ninja didn't want to look after him. He was sure he took it the wrong way, but he didn't care. He just wanted to be alone.
Chase hoped to see the same fox he saw the other day, but no fox appeared.
Chase whistled lightly as he stared out at nature. Then he saw a tuft of red fur from behind the bush. It was attracted to his whistling. So he whistled louder, hitting all the notes perfectly. It was an old song he remembered from his very early childhood.
That's when the fox came into full view. Chase got off the stump and sat on the ground, offering his hand to the fox, who sniffed it curiously.
Chase brushed aside some weeds growing next to the stump as if to offer the spot to the creature.
And that's when he saw it. It was very small and very unclear, but he saw it nonetheless. It was the symbol of the tornado, carved into the side of the stump.
He was just putting together three and three about the fox, the tree stump, and the tornado that he saw in his flashes when he heard Jay calling his name.
The fox was scared away by the unfamiliar voice.
"There you are!" Jay panted, bending over and resting his hands on his knees. "It's time for school."
Chase scowled. He suddenly wasn't feeling like going to school with a bunch of other unfamiliar kids. But he got up and walked with Jay, still pondering about the symbol and what it meant.
They took Jay's epic lightning bike to school, so they wouldn't be late. Many people stared at the awesome vehicle but continued about their day after a while of gazing.
Chase hopped out of the backseat, looking up at his new school, Ninjago Elementary.
Kids were arriving, most walking, but some riding their bikes or skateboards.
Chase took a deep breath, clutching the straps of his backpack tightly.
"Want me to walk you in?" Jay asked.
Chase wanted to say yes, but thought that would look a little silly, so he declined. "No, I'm okay. Thanks." He gave Jay a quick hug, and then walked into school, joining the flow of kids.
He saw Jay give him one last smile and thumbs-up, then drive away on his lightning bike.
When Chase entered the school, it was much bigger than he'd expected. The tiled floors were smooth under his shoes, and classrooms lined the intersecting walls of the building.
He glanced up and saw multiple floors layering upwards. He suddenly felt anxious at the hugeness of the school, and he wondered how he'd ever find his way around.
Out of nowhere, a smiling girl with light brown hair walked up to him. "Hello," she greeted him softly, her soft brown eyes making contact with his own sharp blue ones.
"Hi," Chase said back, looking at her more closely. Then he realized that this was the girl from his flashes. He had seen the future again.
"I'm Kara. Are you new around here?" she asked.
"Yeah, it's my first day. And I'm Chase by the way," Chase said.
"Nice to meet you, Chase. And don't worry, our first day of school was on Monday, and today's Wednesday, so you didn't miss much."
"Good. I've never been to school before, so I don't know how things work."
"Don't worry, I'll help you out. Do you know your schedule?"
"Yeah." Chase pulled out a piece of folded-up paper from his pocket. He unfolded it. "I've got math first. Then science. Then recess. Then art. Then lunch. Then language arts. Then another recess. Then history. Then music. Then library time."
"Wow. We have practically the same schedule. Actually, that's not a surprise. We're required to take certain classes like math, science, history, language arts, and art. Music is optional, and library time is encouraged for the extra half-hour of the day before we're picked up. You're in grade 5, right?"
"Um…" Chase trailed off, trying to remember the grade level he was in. "I think so?" he said, unsure.
"How old are you?"
"Eleven."
"Then I'm pretty sure you're in grade 5. And don't worry, if you don't know any of the material that well, the teacher covers it in class, and then we review it."
"Okay, cool."
"Our first class is starting." Chase and Kara ran to the math classroom. Kara took a seat in the front row, while Chase had no idea where to go and just stood there.
Kara signaled for him to sit in the empty seat in the second row, which he did.
"Hello, class," the teacher said. "We have a new student today. Chase, would you mind introducing yourself?"
Chase stood up. "Um, hi. I'm Chase Vance Philips." The class 'hied' him back.
"Hello, Chase. Would you mind telling us about yourself?" the teacher, who's name was Mrs. Song, asked.
"I'm eleven years old. I have never been to school before. I lived my entire life on my own in the woods because my parents died when I was young. And now I'm being raised by ninjas."
"You mean the heroes of the city?" A boy with glasses asked.
"Yeah." Many kids were wowed by this.
"Wait, you said you lived in the woods on your own for practically our whole life?" Mrs. Song asked.
"Yes. I didn't have my parents."
"That is..well, that is both impressive and very saddening. Wow. What a story. Thank you, Chase, you may take a seat." Chase sat down.
"But one quick thing," Mrs. Song said. "If you've never really had any education, do you know any math?"
"Yeah, I got some simple lessons through the ninja and just friends I met along the way. I know addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. And fractions and decimals, sort of."
"That is a solid enough curriculum history for you to be attending this class. Wonderful."
As math went by, Chase learned and reviewed a lot of the stuff he'd learned previously. Science was very intriguing because they did a chemical experiment that foamed over.
Overall, the day went very well. Chase's favorite class was most definitely music, where he learned the piano and violin. He also enjoyed history, where he learned about Ninjago in the past.
It was library time, so he went to the massive school library and picked out a sci-fi book.
Jay picked him up there, knowing his schedule, and they drove home in the lightning bike.
"How was school?" Jay asked, while turning a curb.
"I really liked it. I made a new friend. Her name is Kara."
"That's good. See? I knew you'd like it."
They arrived at the bounty a few minutes later, and Chase told everyone how school was. Apparently, while he was gone, Cole and Lloyd left on a mission, and they hadn't returned yet.
Chase put down his bag and headed straight for the woods hoping to study that symbol a little closer.
When he arrived, he carefully uncovered the weeds blocking it from view because he had recovered them over the tornado symbol after discovering it for the first time, and he stared at the symbol very intently.
In fact, he focused on it so intently that he didn't even see the fox sit right beside him at first.
"Oh, hello," Chase said to the fox, surprised but pleased that it was there. He gave it a gentle pat. Since he saw the fox so often now, he decided to give it a name. "What should I call you?" He could tell that this fox was a girl. "How about…Scarlet?" The fox seemed to be listening to him. She nodded her head, as if she understood.
"Okay, then. You're officially known as Scarlet." He gave Scarlet one more pet before turning back to the symbol. "What could this mean?"
He stared at it a while longer, until he had an image of it solidly captured in his head.
Chase got up and started to walk back towards the bounty. Scarlet sauntered after him, as if wanting to play.
"Sorry, Scarlet," Chase said, bending down to give her a pat. "I can't take you with me. But we'll play again tomorrow, okay?" But Scarlet didn't budge.
"Hey, bud." Chase heard a voice from across the way. It was Jay. "Whatcha up to?"
"Oh, nothing much."
Then Jay noticed Scarlet. "Aww, isn't she cute?"
"Yeah. Her name is Scarlet. She's been hangin' with me."
"Cute." Scarlet nuzzled Chase one more time then walked back off into the woods.
"So, um, where are all of your scrolls?" Chase asked.
"Ahh, um, we have some pretty much everywhere, but a good chunk of them are in Wu's room. You can ask him," Jay replied. "Why? What do you need scrolls for?"
"I just want to read up on–a topic I learned in school," Chase lied.
"Oh, cool. History, I'm assuming?"
"Yes."
"Alright, feel free to."
"Thanks."
Together, the pair trudged back to the waiting bounty. Chase immediately asked Sensei Wu for scrolls.
Sensei Wu was more suspicious than Jay had been, and he asked more questions. "What exactly do you need the scrolls for?"
"A school subject. I want to read up on something."
"Really? I doubt that. What do you actually need? I might be of use."
Chase sighed. "I saw a symbol in the woods, and I wanted to read up on what it was."
"What sort of symbol? What did it look like?" Wu asked, officially more curious than suspicious.
"Um, it was like a tornado, kind of, I think. That's all I can say," Chase attempted to describe the symbol, but Wu didn't need any more information than that it was a tornado.
"A tornado? I think I have some answers for you." Wu led Chase to his room, which was very clean with a single mat on the floor and a boiling pot of tea.
"The tornado," Wu began, "is the symbol of Spinjitzu."
"Huh?"
"Spinjitzu is a martial art form. Our own ninja constantly do Spinjitzu on their missions and such. You must feel the energy of your element and then spin to its rhythm. You will be enveloped in a tornado of your element. Although I'm not quite sure why you have discovered that symbol."
This confused Chase. "It was on a stump. Anyone could have found it."
"No, not anyone could have. Only those worthy of its knowledge."
Chase grew more and more perplexed by the moment.
Whatever that symbol meant, and whatever Spinjitzu was, Chase was apparently worthy of its knowledge, meaning that he was the potential key to saving Ninjago City.
So, that was chapter 6, hope you enjoyed it. I sure enjoyed writing it. Anyway, please review, favorite, follow, any of that stuff. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!
See ya in the next one.
