Long ago, near the end of the Meiji era, a great battle took place, eight legendary shinobi, four good and four evil, were fighting an all-out war. Each of them was a master at their own elemental phase, Energy, Land, Sky, Sea, Heaven, Spirit, Mind, and Beast.

The battle lasted for what seemed like an eternity and ended when they eventually slayed each other. Fearing about their souls being reincarnated, a monk sealed all of their souls into a jade vase. A prophecy was made that day. That one day eight young warriors would be able to all share the burden of the eight souls and change the world, for better or worse.

"Whatcha reading, Double-D?"

Eddward Marion Reiss perked up, his attention snapped out of the book he was reading on Japanese History and Mythology.

He was an 18-year-old young man wearing a tomato red t-shirt, purple shorts, red knee-high socks, and light blue shoes. The most unique thing about him was his black sock-like ski hat, which covered most of his sunny golden blonde hair. He also had baby blue eyes and a gap in the middle of his teeth.

Turning, he looked to see his two best friends trying to look over his shoulder; Edwin Horace Alba and Eddy Skipper McGee.

Ed was a tall 19-year-old young man with feathery auburn hair, a distinguished-looking unibrow, emerald green eyes, and freckles. He wore a green jacket over a red and white striped undershirt, light purple jeans, and black boots.

Eddy was an 18-year-old young man of slightly below-average height with blue hair that had three spikey asymmetrical stalks jutting out in the front. He had chocolate-brown eyes and wore a yellow t-shirt with a purple collar and red vertical stripe, light blue jeans with a wallet chain in his pocket, and red sneakers.

The three boys in question were known as 'The Eds' around their hometown of Peach Creek, Wisconsin. They were an inseparable trio and lived every day to the fullest. However, they were currently in a bit of a dilemma.

The boys had just graduated from school at Peach Creek High and were now trying to think about what university to attend. Naturally, they didn't want to go to different colleges and break their fellowship, so they had been planning at home while enjoying their summer vacation.

Double-D had been passing some off-time by reading up on the history of other countries and right now, he was on Japan, having found an interesting piece on its myriad history and mythology.

"I've just been looking up a lot of fascinating things about Japan." The smartest of the trio explained to his chums. "Right now, I'm on this piece from the Meiji era where eight shinobi masters ended up destroying each other in a devastating war, their souls being sealed away until a group of eight could be chosen to host their souls amongst each other."

"Shinobi?" Eddy asked with a lazy arched eyebrow. "You know I don't speak Japanese, Double-D."

"Shinobi is another term for Ninja, Eddy," Double-D explained with a sigh. "You really should have paid more attention in History Class."

"Remember our trip to Japan, guys?" Ed excitedly asked.

"It wasn't a trip, it was a failed scam, Ed," Eddy grumbled. "Had to be in that dumb body cast for three weeks..."

Double-D chuckled and rolled his eyes, recalling that day very well; they had tried to make Jimmy a star by fattening him up into a sumo wrestler and when they tried to reach Japan by slingshotting themselves there, Jimmy's bulk had crushed Eddy and Ed, leaving them bed-ridden for weeks afterward.

"So, what else is there about these Ninjas, Double-D?" Eddy asked as he tried to look over the book his friend was reading again.

"Well, the Shinobi Culture was very secretive for countless generations, constantly battling between Good and Evil virtues. I don't know all the details, but they were also warriors who battled terrible demons known as Yoma, creatures of pure evil.

"So, what, did the Good and Evil Ninjas have an enemy of my enemy sorta things?" Eddy asked, digging into his ear bored.

"Yes, Eddy! In many ways, Good and Evil Shinobi were not so different in their ideals and goals in life!" Ed happily pointed out. "Just because one was classified as one side did not mean they were automatically good or evil!"

Eddy and Double-D stared at their normally childish and dim-witted friend with surprise before just shrugging, used to his sudden bursts of intelligence and insight by now.

"You know, if all this is exciting you guys, why don't we plan a vacation?" Eddy smirked. "A trip to Japan, just the three of us amigos!"

"Well, my parents do have friends there..." Double-D hummed thoughtfully. "I'll see if I can ask them about-"

Suddenly, a knock on the door alerted The Eds as Double-D went over and answered it, only to find nobody there...except for a strange envelope on the floor. Picking it up, the sock-hatted boy looked it over before returning to his friends.

"Who was it, Sockhead?"

"I don't know, but someone left this note here."

Opening up the envelope and reading what was inside, The Eds were all surprised at what they read:

Congratulations!

You have been cordially invited to Japan on an all-expenses paid trip to Osakasa! It is there that you will be able to study the rich history of our fair city as well as learn about the secret history of Shinobi! We hope you enjoy your stay and learn lots of new things! In this envelope are seven tickets for you and six of your bestest friends to go! Don't worry, everything has been paid in advance!

"Who did you think sent this?" Eddy asked.

"No clue, it doesn't even have a return address," Double-D said, checking the note over. "How curious..."

"Maybe it was the Shinobi Overlords who seek to induct us into their fold of mighty warriors to save the world!" Ed excitedly suggested as his friends just stared at him like he was crazy...which was all the time, mostly.

"Well, there's seven tickets, three for each of us. But that leaves four more. Who do we pick?" Double-D pondered.

"Excuse me..."

The trio turned to see Jimmy O'Neil, a 16-year-old boy with fluffy light blonde hair, dark blue eyes, and braces wearing a light blue turtleneck, white khaki pants, and black sneakers. Jimmy was often known as the childish wimp of their humble town but he had a cunning mind and a talent for the arts to make up for his lack of strength.

"I heard you got tickets to Japan and...well, baring some bad memories of that scam from years ago, I'd like to come!"

"Oh really, Curly Q? You wanna be a big strong man so you can impress Sarah finally?" Eddy teasingly asked as Jimmy puffed his chest in anger.

"No, you bully! Well...yes, I want to be stronger, but I just don't want to be pushed around anymore, especially not by you!"

"Oh really, remember that time you framed me and my boys for-"

"THAT WAS ONE TIME AND YOU DESERVED IT!"

"Whoa did I hear something about a trip to Japan?!" An excited voice came out as an excitable-looking 17-year-old boy with dark skin, bright brown eyes, and black hair in a small afro wearing a white t-shirt, torn blue jeans, and sandals carrying a hunk of wood with a smiley face on it.

This was Johnny Teubifour (2x4), the resident weird kid of the town who always carried a hunk of wood named 'Plank' who seemed to be sentient in some capacity. Despite his weirdness, Johnny was a good-hearted kid with a love for the outdoors and nature in general.

"It's been Plank's dream to go to Japan! He says that it's one of his life goals!" Johnny beamed. "Can we have one of those tickets? I promise I can sneak Plank in so he doesn't have to pay!"

"Sure, Johnny!" Ed smiled.

"Well, that just leaves two more tickets. Who should we-"

"Hey, Dorks!"

Eddy grumbled as he and the others looked to see Kevin Machone ride up on his motorized bicycle. Kevin was the star athlete and Eddy's self-proclaimed rival.

Kevin was 18 years old and had an athletic build, short spikey red hair, bright green eyes, and wearing a lime green sweater, black shorts, and black sneakers. His hair was covered by a red baseball cap that was flipped backward.

Even though he and The Eds, mostly Eddy, were on better terms now that they were older, Kevin still called them 'Dorks' and frequently butted heads with them. Fortunately, it was nowhere near as bad as it used to be when they were younger.

"Lemme guess, Shovel Chin, you want in on this deal?" Eddy asked sarcastically as Kevin smirked.

"You know it! Let's just say Japan has got some sweet stuff I'd like to pick up as souvenirs."

"The Go-Go Land of the Rising Sun, yes? Rolf also wishes to endeavor to new uncharted regions never seen by the Old Country!"

Everyone looked to see Rolf Yvorik coming in. Rof was a 19-year-old young man with tanned skin, navy blue hair, brown eyes, and a thin unibrow. He wore a yellow t-shirt with a red horizontal stripe, light blue farm pants, and orange farm boots.

Rolf was from a distant land of unknown nationality with various bizarre customs yet surprisingly proficient wisdom and talents. Despite how different he was, he had been welcomed with open arms by the other kids of Peach Creek.

"You want in on this, Rolfy-Boy?" Kevin asked.

Rolf nodded. "Indeed! Rolf has made many good memories here in the Land of the Free, but life is short and Rolf desires to see more of the world!"

"Well, you're in luck, Stretch! With all of us here, that makes seven!" Eddy grinned as he split off for his house. "Pack your bags, boys! We've got a trip to plan out!"

"Oh boy! Japan good for Ed!" Ed cheered as he zoomed over to his house.

"Might as well get prepared. I'll call Mother and Father on the subject." Double-D sighed as he went up to his room.

"Rolf shall gain the necessary provisions for our travel!" Rolf smiled as he headed back to his farmhouse.

"Oh, I hope I have some good things to wear..." Jimmy worriedly said as he headed to his house.

"Yee-Haw, we're flying to Japan, Plank! Your dream is comin' true!" Johnny cheered.

"Heh, this is gonna be so cool." Kevin smirked as he biked his way back home.

"Has the note been delivered?" An elderly woman's voice asked someone bowing in front of her.

"Yes, Sayuri-Sensei. They will soon be on their way."

"Very good...the Kagura Millennium Festival is almost upon us. They will be the ones to awaken the eight legendary shinobi and use their powers justly. We must only hope that they are prepared for the trials that await them."

"But the prophecy...there are only seven so far arriving."

The old woman chuckled. "Don't worry. The eighth will show very soon."
