This is a random take on Zac Efron meeting Vanessa Hudgens after all these years at the upcoming Oscars when he's up for best actor for the Iron Claw and she's presenting at the event. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
Four Seasons, LA
3 hours till the Oscars.
The pristine made up hotel bed is cluttered with an assortment of ties, watches, cufflinks and other accessories. Wallet, keys, and more are strewn across the comforter in a chaotic but systematic way. At the foot of the bed lie a pair of custom patent-leather black Giorgio Armani shoes.
Zac paces about the room barefoot and dressed in his tux as he fiddles with the remote control and turns the TV on.
The sound of Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on E! news fills the room.
"And last but certainly not least we cannot forget The Iron Claw. Up for best picture, this is the biographical sports film that took everyone by storm last December. The Iron Claw follows the true story of legendary professional wrestling family the Von Erich's. Kevin Von Erich is actually in the audience today but on screen Zac Efron is the one who plays the famous wrestler. Speaking of Zac Efron, he is nominated for his first ever Oscar for best actor tonight for this very role. Does he have it in the bag? Most of our predictions say he does.
You know, Kelly, I remember the first time I interviewed Zac back in the day for High School Musical and I have been a fan of his ever since. I love his work but more than that I'm a true fan of who he is as a person. These younger stars feel like our children, you know? We've seen them through it all and now to see them at the height of their careers achieving all these accolades - I feel like a really proud dad."
"Speak for yourself! I feel like a proud older sister, not a mom! Haha but you're absolutely right, Ryan. It's been such a privilege to have so many of these stars grow up right before our very eyes and Zac has always been such a gentleman and so talented. It's wonderful to see him get the credit he deserves. Fingers crossed for all the nominees tonight! Thank you to everyone who's tuning in right now, we will see you on the red carpet after this short break!"
There's a knock on the door as Zac mutes the TV.
The lock beeps and clicks as Zac's younger brother, Dylan Efron walks in with their close friend Ryan Rottman following behind.
Dylan pats Zac on the back with a huge grin. "Are you excited, bro? Your first nomination! That's huge!"
"Nah for real. I think there are even more security guards outside the hotel than usual and ten times the number of screaming fans. This is insane. Everyone's rooting for you, man!" exclaims Ryan taking a seat on the sofa.
"Shit, haha, thanks guys. I'm excited for the whole team. And I'm so glad Kevin's here. Honestly, I don't know how to feel. I'm pretty nervous but yeah definitely excited too."
"You should be, dude! You're already a badass. A nom IS a win in this industry. Now, before I get anymore sappy tell me you need anything? Are you good? Ry, I swear last time he was presenting at the Oscars he forgot his socks. I ran to Target IN THE RAIN to get them for him," Dylan chastised.
"You did NOT," Zac laughs as he puts Dylan in a playful headlock.
"Watch the suit! I can't have any wrinkles. My brother's nominated for an Oscar tonight, you know?" Dylan dislodges himself and smoothes out his suit.
"Haha. Thanks bro. I appreciate you." Zac clasps his brother's hand and pulls him in for a quick hug.
"Socks and shoes are right by the bed, Dyl - our work here is done," says Ryan, putting his hands behind his head and leaning back against the sofa.
"Nailed it," says Dylan. "Oh by the way, Mom and Dad want to let you know they're on their way. It may take some time but they love you and can't wait to see you soon."
"That's awesome. I just texted them too. I hope they make it in time - I know they got stuck behind that accident on the highway but I can't wait to see them."
"Oh and Olivia and Henry sent you a video message. I'm just sending it over."
Zac and Dylan's little sister suddenly popped up on the screen of Zac's iPhone. She was wearing a baby blue and white checkered dress and had her wavy light brown hair up in two pigtails on the side of her head. With her huge grin and electric ocean blue eyes she was the spitting image of her older brothers.
As Zac hit play on the downloaded video, Olivia's voice filled the room. She was standing on a brown couch in her living room, jumping up and down excitedly as she proclaimed,"Good luck big bwother! We love you vewy much." Her younger brother, Henry, who also bore a striking resemblance to the Efron's with his short blonde hair and blue eyes stood next to her. He held an upside down poster with the words, "Good luck," on it with the letters written in several different sizes and was adorned with several multicolored hand draw hearts all over. He smiled brightly at the camera.
"They're so cute. Henry holding the sign is too precious haha. Thanks bro. Definitely feeling better now," said Zac.
"The cutest. I don't want them to grow up anymore. 'Aight big bro, how long till we have to get you out the door?"
"I have a little time. Let me call Melissa - I think she's already there."
As Zac went off to call his publicist, Dylan took a seat next to Ryan on the couch.
Zac's mood that had been significantly uplifted with Dylan and Ryan's presence dimmed after speaking to Melissa. She was more nervous than he was. Suddenly, he was once again conscious of how this win wouldn't just mean something to him but all those who had been by his side all these years. Dylan and Ryan sensed the change in his energy.
"Hey man, whatever happens tonight you still rock. Besides, you guys are up for like six different things! You gotta take home SOMETHING. And if not, we'll have a good time. It's still going to be a special night," said Ryan.
"Fingers crossed," said Zac, grateful for the support of his friends and family.
He threw his phone on the bed and busied himself with putting his socks and shoes on.
Dylan unmuted the TV to watch the red carpet.
Ryan sat up straight and looked at the screen a bit more closely. "Oh shit! I didn't know Beyoncé was going to be there! "
"No way. I wonder who else is attending tonight," said Dylan.
"Wait - isn't Will Smith banned?"
"Oh yeah! I think Jada is here alone though," Ryan mused.
As the boys discussed the attendees and the events of the night, they suddenly went silent as one particular guest caught their eye.
Vanessa Hudgens, bejeweled in a custom Moschino red and black floor length gown stepped onto the red carpet.
Intrigued by their silence, Zac looked up at the screen as he caught sight of what they were staring at.
Dylan just about made out his brother whispering, "Hey, Vanessa's right there," as a fond smile graced Zac's lips and his eyes softened.
Dylan looked at his brother with a knowing smile. He knew in that instance, Zac wasn't thinking about his nomination at all.
Yup, thought Dylan. Tonight is definitely going to be a special night no matter what.
