Back at Stolas's manor, everyone was sitting on the bed while Moxxie read the letter from his long-lost mother.
"My Dearest Moxxie," Moxxie read out loud. "I bet you have so many questions and I'll answer them all shortly, but first, I wanted to tell you that I'm so, so proud of you. I've watched you grow up from heaven for so long and you've grown into such a good imp despite your father's worst intentions. No matter what mistakes you've made and any regrets you've had, you've still become a wonderful imp and have found a fantastic wife and friends. And to top that all off, you've started reforming too. As a mother, I couldn't be happier, my beloved son. I love you and couldn't be prouder.
"Now to answer all the questions I'm sure you have. My parents Limelight and Rose were loving but poor traveling performers who met on the road, got married, and had me. They loved the stage, like me and you. We loved singing and dancing and acting on stage together. We didn't make much, but it was enough. We were unusual in that wherever we traveled we liked to help whoever we met, sinners and imps alike. That was until my parents fell ill. I kept working with various troupes to make money. I sent whatever I made back to them and kept up through letters.
"One day, their letters started sounding delirious. They talked about how cherubs had come for them and wanted to take them to heaven because they had gone heavenly. I thought they were going crazy. I didn't want to believe it because of the consequences. But one day, the hospital called me. My parents were gone. They left me a letter that said they were leaving and that I would join them soon. I was devastated. I thought they had committed suicide to make my life easier. The hospital thought the same thing and wanted me to pay so many bills. I know now they were telling the truth, but then, I didn't. My despair led me to make some naïve decisions.
"As you can guess, that is when I met your father Crimson. He showed up one day after a performance. My friend Scarlet pointed out that he was staring at me the whole time. I was so caught up in my own sadness at that time that I didn't notice or care. Men staring at me were a dime a dozen. He didn't exactly stick out. But then, Crimson kept coming back. No matter where I performed, Crimson would be there. He stuck out to me. Then he started sending me gifts. That caught my attention, and as a dumb 19-year-old girl, I started falling hard and fast.
"Crimson and I started meeting backstage to talk before shows. That led to us going on dates which led to nights in hotel rooms which led to your conception. I wasn't ready to be married. I wanted to be a single mother while Crimson paid child support, but he was so charming and I was so foolish I agreed to marry him after very little persuasion.
"The wedding was extravagant. Crimson made me think he would be a total gentleman. I was not prepared for him to reveal who he really was. I knew he was in the mob, but I didn't know how involved until it was too late and he removed his mask. I had no money and nowhere to go, so I accepted my fate. The only bright parts of that life were the few opportunities I got to be kind to others and especially my baby son.
"You were the light of my life, Moxxie. Raising you brought me the happiness and the joy that the loss of my parents had drained from me. It wasn't always easy, but I enjoyed every moment with you. You gave me the courage to be myself again. I loved teaching you how to sing and dance. I loved teaching you how to shoot. I loved seeing the gentle boy you grew into. I loved all the time I spent with you. I loved being your mother. All the pain Crimson put me through was worth it for you, Moxxie. I do not regret standing up for you. I do not regret defying Crimson. I do not regret staying for you despite what happened.
"Speaking of, I should explain what happened. As I'm sure you know, leaving wasn't my choice. You see, the cherubs who came to my parents came to me too. They told me I was going heavenly, like my parents. I couldn't believe it. My parents still existed. Yet, I still had to protest. I couldn't leave you, but they told me that since you were an innocent child I could take you with me. That was the best news I could ever hear. I agreed to their terms. I planned on leaving with you the next night.
"That last day around Crimson, I felt so brave. I remember teaching you how to shoot and being so proud and feeling no fear when I stopped him from making you shoot another imp. He was furious, but I wasn't frightened. But you were and I'm so sorry. I took you inside hoping to reveal the whole surprise, but of course, Crimson had to intervene. We got into a massive fight. My biggest regret is that you were there hiding and watching the whole thing. I refused to let him get a rise out of me even after he slapped me. I then stomped out of the room to keep him from striking again. I hate that that's the last memory of me you have. You more than anyone deserve to know what happened next.
"I begged the cherubs to take us early. They heard my request. Right then and there, wings sprung on my back. I was prepared to find you and leave for heaven with you. But then, Crimson showed up. He saw me, wings and all. I thought he'd try to kill me then and there, but he was amazed. The monster immediately started going on about how good this would be for the 'family' and how much I could do for them with my new superpower. Of course, I wouldn't hear of it. I told Crimson what I intended to do, that I was going to leave and take you with me. That was when the switch flipped. I tried flying away and escaping, but that bastard called his men and they all fell on me at once. The next thing I knew, everything went black.
"When I woke up, I was in a rowboat with Crimson and Alessio. I was tied up, gagged with duct tape, and had my tail attached to a cinderblock. I was so scared. As soon as Crimson saw me wake up, he told me how upset he was that I had disappointed him and how he had loved me, but I had broken his heart with my betrayal and blah blah blah. Crimson said I deserved what was coming for defying him and that he would make sure you grew up to take after him and forget all about me. That part stung the most…"
Moxxie paused as his eyes welled up with tears as he read what he always knew but never dared to imagine. It made him shake with anger and sadness that he had been holding back for so many years.
The others looked at him with complete sympathy.
Millie was the first to lay her hand on Moxxie to show her support. She was followed by Blitzo and by Stolas.
"You don't have to keep reading if you don't want to, Mox," Millie said.
"Yeah, Moxxie," Blitzo added. "You can stop."
"I can't," Moxxie said. "I have to get through this letter for my mother. I owe her this. I want to read her words and find out how she signs her name."
"You are a noble soul, little imp," said Stolas. "You and I seem to have more in common than I thought. Please, keep on reading."
Moxxie smiled and picked up his letter to continue to read it.
"Crimson said other cruel things to me about how I had failed him and you as a wife and mother. It seemed he couldn't stand how much I stood up to him. He had to have all the power. I remember how pathetic he looked to me. Despite the circumstances, it was almost funny.
"I remember crying. Not because of what he said, but because of you. I'd be separated from you forever.
"The bastard really got off on that and had the balls to ungag me to ask me to beg for his forgiveness. I did not give him this pleasure, so without another word, he dropped my cement block into the sea.
"That is when it happened, Moxxie. Before I even lost the breath I was holding, there was a bright light and I saw myself being lifted out of the water. My bonds were cut, and the cement block fell into the sea. My wings were freed! Two cherubs, the same ones who tried to help me earlier, were supporting me in their arms while we flew into the sky. More cherubs were gathered in the sky singing the most beautiful song I ever heard. The look on Crimson and Alessio's faces were priceless. They were absolutely stunned. I kicked a shoe at Crimson. It hit him right in the face.
"I looked to the sky. I laughed. I felt tears falling down my cheeks in joy. Then, I remembered you. I muttered your name, Moxxie, but they told me that you couldn't come with me now. I could only pray the same thing would happen to you. My tears fell more heavily, but when we all entered heaven through the portal, I saw my parents, and I felt joy again.
"Leaving you behind was my only regret, my sweet boy. I always watched you from afar and prayed that one day you would come to be reformed as well. My parents did too. I watched you grow up. I watched how Crimson raised you in terror and wished I could intervene so many times. I watched how he failed and never succeeded at making you his perfect son. I watched how you fell in love with Chaz the first time only for him to abandon you and break your heart. I saw how Blitzo saved you in more ways than he could understand at the time. I saw you find freedom. I saw you marry the love of your life, your wonderful Millie. I saw you make so many new friends including the Goetia family and Loona the hellhound. I saw you grow as a person. I saw you start to reform when you met humans in the living world. I saw your new family fight off your father and so much more my beloved son.
"I'm so proud of the reformed imp you've become. I'm proud of how strong you've been and of your growing family. I can't wait to see you in person and be a grandmother. I can't wait to meet your found family members. I know Millie and I will be friends already. I know I'll be friends with Blitzo too. I want to thank them both personally for taking such great care of you. I pray they and their loved ones make it too.
"When the cherubs told me that they were giving you the book to read to learn heavenly magic, I simply had to add my letter. Inside the book, I've added my own notes that have helped me learn cherub magic of my own.
"I'm so proud of you, my son. Please keep going no matter what happens. You and your grandparents will be waiting for you until then. We love you so much, Moxxie.
"Your Loving Mother,
"Camillia."
With that, the letter ended and Moxxie held it against his chest, repeating his mother's name.
"Camilla," Moxxie said, falling back against his bed as he held his letter against his chest. "Camilla. I finally know your name, Mom, and it's so beautiful. Camilla. Camilla. Thank you for everything. I finally know who you are. Please be patient for just a little longer. We'll be with you soon."
Moxxie's wife and his friends watched as he lay there in happiness with tears coming out of his eyes.
