(Flashback continued)
Enough
~BPOV~
A clouded daze of movements I made in my detached state. Traumatized by my own actions and knowing that this was only the beginning.
Just the start of the long list of crimes I would commit before returning home to my perfect and innocent daughter. Before facing my adoring husband.
My hands shook as I stepped over the bodies to go into the bathroom.
Scrubbing the blood from my skin and seeing the red streaks disappear down the drain.
What did I do? That question repeated in my mind, over and over again.
Dressing in their clothes and putting on a cloak.
Following them down the halls of this place, knowing I was being followed too. That I was surrounded by them.
Sitting in silence at the back of their plane.
Watching them talk amongst themselves as though they were on a business trip. As though they weren't murderers who killed at will.
Emmeline's words in my head echoing back and forth, assuring me she was wrong. Those rules and limitations had kept me safe. They had covered me like a shelter from the storm. Assuring that I never needed to know how horrible and dark everything was beyond it.
But they had taken that shelter from me; I would forever know what lay beneath. I would always know who I truly am and how very little it would take for that monster to surface.
It changed everything.
Jane occasionally stole glances at me, her wicked expression suddenly becoming more apparent for what it really was.
She was the one with limitations and she knew it. Frozen in this way of life, her only joy came from misery. She had nothing else. Aro wouldn't allow her to have anything else.
When we landed, they pushed me into a black car with tinted windows and drove for hours. It wasn't until the early hours of the morning that we finally stopped.
I marched with them, apart of an army I had no loyalty to whatsoever. But that didn't mean I wouldn't fight with them. I'd do anything to protect my family.
In the mountains of Mexico, I was lost in some forgotten ruins.
I stood back, as I was instructed, and watched as they lined themselves up outside of the small cottage. Calling out their targets.
The first was a woman, who appeared no older than me. But of course, looks could be deceiving.
Then one by one, four more followed.
I could see it in their eyes. They were like us. Like my family.
Their eyes weren't red and narrowed; they were warm and kind. Their humanity was still evident in their expressions.
Panic suddenly set in me,
Aro confidently explained to them that he couldn't allow such a threat to exist.
But I knew there was no threat here. Just power.
That was the real problem. Aro's greed. He always wanted more. So fearful of it all being taken from him. He couldn't possibly comprehend that his life wasn't as appealing as he believed it to be.
He couldn't understand that no one wished to sit upon his throne of misery, a throne built on other people's power.
Power,
It was all he cared about.
If he couldn't harness it, then he would eradicate it.
He'd do the same to us one day.
He looked back at me and nodded.
I released my shield, what he knew it to be. Drops of it covered them.
And my mind raced.
For him to bring me here must mean that these people are capable of removing the Volturi.
Everyone's abilities were blocked, but nothing could save the small coven from the dozen soldiers who descended on them.
Then suddenly, the woman's eyes met mine.
We looked nothing alike. She had fire-red hair and a tall, firm build, delicate features, and beautiful. She was my exact opposite. But in that moment, it was as though I were looking at my own reflection.
She was scared. She didn't want to die, but more than that she didn't want her family to die.
I just hoped she was as powerful as they believed her to be.
As though she saw the resolve in my eyes, she smiled.
I dropped my shield and nodded to her.
She needed only look at them and they burst into flames. One after the other, the soldiers were set alight.
I used my shield, accordingly, assuring no one could use their abilities to stop her.
Jane's head snapped back toward me, granting me enough time to glare at her before she was set engulfed in flames.
It took only seconds, and half the army was gone.
In the chaos, Aro and Felix turned and ran toward me, thinking they could somehow force me into line.
That was when it happened, When I reached into that well and pulled everything out. Creating a shield that nothing could pass through. Impenetrable steel.
I could almost see it; it glistened in the sunlight, sparkling like a clear lake.
I approached its edge and met my eyes with his, watching as he pressed at the invisible wall. Felix began smashing his fist against it as though he could somehow shatter it like glass.
But Aro grew still.
They were so afraid, and I savoured it.
I didn't say a word, I just watched as they burst into flames, knowing that after his long and horrible life, I was the last thing he would see.
That was enough.
