Chapter 58: Idling Sins: the Price of Peace

It took a long time for Naruto and Sasuke to reach Edinburgh. There were a few times they thought about just staying where they were, but they decided against it. However, once they reached Edinburgh, they regretted not doing just that. The village was fine but the castle looked to be overrun by a giant plant. Curious, Naruto asked someone about it and they explained that the castle had been destroyed a long time ago. He wanted to know more, but it looked like the lady didn't want to say anymore. Naruto and Sasuke looked at each other before deciding to head for the castle to take a closer look. Just as they walked past the last house, they felt the ground shake.

A light shot up into the sky a few miles west. Naruto and Sasuke felt the immense power before the light even disappeared. They then felt the presence coming closer. Neither wanted to get into a fight, so they hid. Naruto pulled out his map and looked at where the castle once stood. Ten names were there. He made sure none of them moved as he and Sasuke kept moving. When they were over fifty miles away, they finally stopped. Naruto glanced down at the map and saw two more names. A few minutes later, the two names vanished. Naruto's eyes widened. Unless they were like him and Sasuke and were sent to a different world, the two were dead.

"Sasuke," Naruto called, but the other was already looking at his own map. Soundly screams could be heard. Naruto and Sasuke looked up to see several strange creatures flying through the air. Naruto instantly looked back at the map. He watched as many names disappeared. He moved to stand up but Sasuke grabbed his arm and pulled him into his lap. "Sasuke! Let me go."

"No," Sasuke said. He wrapped his arms around Naruto to keep him from leaving their hiding spot. "We have no right to interfere."

"They are killing people!" Naruto yelled.

Sasuke moved one of his hands to cover Naruto's mouth. "We can't." He held Naruto closer as the blond struggled against him. "You felt it, right. They are stronger than us. We might be able to defeat one of them, but only the Kyuubi stands a chance against them all." Naruto stopped moving. "Do you get it now?" Naruto nodded. "We can't interfere." Sasuke removed his hand from Naruto's mouth.

"I know that you are right," Naruto said. "It isn't my place to go and stop them. I just don't like it." He turned around, still in Sasuke's lap. "I don't like sitting by and letting people get killed when I have the power to help them."

Sasuke reached up and gripped Naruto's chin. "Those thoughts could get you killed." Naruto saw something in Sasuke's eyes that he didn't recognize. He felt like those eyes were pulling him in and for some reason, he wanted to get closer to Sasuke. Just as he realized what he was thinking, Sasuke released him. Sasuke stood up. "We are going to have to take turns watching over the map to make sure we're not found."

"I-I'll take t-the first watch," Naruto stuttered. Sasuke raised an eyebrow but said nothing as he took out his sleeping bag. If Naruto wanted the first watch, he could have it. Sasuke got an comfortable as he could before he let himself fall asleep. Naruto stared at Sasuke for a few minutes before he turned back to the map.

Sasuke ate slowly as he watched several names on the map vanish. He couldn't blame Naruto for wanting to help people. Even he was starting to want to fight. It was hard knowing that so many people were dying. The fact that Sasuke didn't know those people, barely helped. He sighed. Orochimaru had always said that he was too soft. Taking a sip of his water his noticed that one of those ten people at the destroyed castle vanished. Sasuke wondered if he was killed, but then he appeared about a hundred feet way. It became obvious that he was on the move.

Sasuke shook Naruto awake, a hand over his mouth. He showed the other the map. Naruto nodded in understanding and the two quickly packed up their stuff. They made their way to the edge of the cave. Just as they were about to leave, someone dropped down from above. Sasuke and Naruto separated, moving to each side of the cave, hiding. Both looked down at their maps, waiting for Galand to move. But he didn't. More than ten minutes passed and Galand stood in front of the cave's entrance. Naruto and Sasuke started to believe that he knew that they were there. Naruto put his hands up in a familiar sign. Sasuke expected to see Naruto's Sexy Jutsu, but instead, a fox was in his place. Naruto ran out of the cave only for Galand to pick him up.

"A fox?" Galand said. He brought Naruto up to his face. Naruto licked at Galand's face, internally gagging. "Hm… cute." He sat down and began to pet Naruto. "I sense some magic coming from you." Sasuke decided that he too needed to henge. He changed into a fox as well. He ran out, wanting to make sure Naruto was ok. "I see. There were two of you. That cave must be your den." He place Naruto back on the ground. Sasuke moved towards Naruto, ready to change back if necessary. "I'll leave you two be. Just stay in your cave. I wouldn't want one of our demons eating you." He stood back up. "Now then, it's been about fifteen paces. I should be there soon, Meliodas." He jumped into the sky. Naruto and Sasuke wanted a few more minutes before releasing their henges.

"Why did you do that?" Sasuke asked. "He could have killed you!"

"He sensed us despite how we concealed ourselves," Naruto explained. "I thought if he believed we were just foxes that he'd leave. I was right." He grabbed his bag that he had dropped when he changed into a fox. "We need to go. He's going after Meliodas!" Sasuke grabbed Naruto's arm. "I know what you are going to say. But I can't just sit back and do nothing when I know that Meliodas is in danger."

Sasuke sighed as he let Naruto go. "Then let's go."

"You're not going to stop me?" Naruto asked.

"What's the point?" Sasuke said. "You will just go on your own. It's better if I go with you." He held out his map to Naruto. "We're not going to make it in time." Naruto looked at the map to see that Galand was only a few miles away from Meliodas.

"We still need to try," Naruto said. Knowing that Sasuke would follow him, Naruto began to run. The two added chakra to their legs to increase their speed. Sasuke was surprised that Naruto didn't enter in Kyuubi-Mode with at least two tails. It would have made him faster. Naruto wanted to stop and look at his map to make sure that Meliodas and the others were still ok, but he didn't want to waste time. They had to run on water to reach Camelot, reaching the kingdom within a half hour. Naruto and Sasuke came to a stop outside a wall that had been destroyed. Their eyes widened at the destruction. Naruto's mind went to Pein as he remembered how the man had nearly destroyed Konoha. Sasuke on the other hand compared what he was seeing to what he saw in the world with Abunaisuke. Abunaisuke had obliterated most of each of the Five Great Nations. It seemed that Galand was either weaker than Abunaisuke or was simply holding back, though Sasuke wasn't sure if Galand was the one that did this.

Naruto stepped forward, pulling out his map. He let out a breath of relief as he saw Meliodas's name still there. Just as he was about to run to where he was, a flash of green appeared in the corner of his eye. "No," he whispered. "Not now." He gritted his teeth as he began to run. Sasuke's eyes widened and he chased after Naruto, afraid that they'd get separated. He didn't know why, but that thought of Naruto leaving his side scared him. Sasuke managed to catch up to Naruto, just as they were surrounded in a green light. "No!" Naruto yelled. The last thing they saw was Galand walking towards two purple cubes.

Naruto fell to his knees as he realized they were no longer in Meliodas's world. He punched the ground as tears began to roll down his face. "Why?" He cried. "Why can I never save anyone?"

Sasuke stared at Naruto, wanting to console him. He opened his bag and pulled out the mirror. Yuko appeared a few seconds later. Before she could say anything, Sasuke made his wish. "I need to see what is happening in the world we were just in." Naruto heard this and glance at Sasuke.

"There will be a price to pay," Yuko said.

"I'll pay it," Sasuke said, not even caring what the price could be.

"Wait!" Naruto said, standing back up. "You can't do that."

"I can," Sasuke said.

"Blood is needed as payment," Yuko said. "Normally, to see, I'd need your eyes. But because of the power they hold, your price would be too high."

"If blood is all you need, take mine!" Naruto yelled.

"No," Yuko said. "It is Sasuke's wish, not yours."

"Let me make the payment for him," Naruto begged. "It is my wish as well."

"Dobe," Sasuke said. "Shut up." He push Naruto to the ground before pulling on a kunai.

"Sasuke, don't!" Naruto said. Sasuke ignore him and cut across his hand. He held the hand over the mirror, knowing that Yuko would be able to get it this way. A few seconds later, Yuko said it was enough. Sasuke pulled back his hand only to have Naruto grab it. He held a chakra infused hand over the wound, once more grateful of Sakura's teachings. Yuko called for their attention and they both looked into the glass of the mirror. Yuko disappeared from the mirror as the colors changed. Meliodas appeared with Elizabeth by his side. It appeared that he was sleeping. Naruto let out a sigh of relief. "He's ok."

"They didn't need us," Sasuke said. "Even if they couldn't defeat Galand, they can still get stronger."

"I know," Naruto said. He kept staring at the mirror until if went black. "Thank you."

"Hn," Sasuke grunted as he put the mirror away.

"So, it looks like we're in another world," Naruto said. He knew he was stating the obvious, but he didn't know what else to say. He looked around.

"Hn," Sasuke said. He also looked around. This time, they were in the mountains. They stood at the base of what had to be the tallest one. All around them were rocks with only a few signs of plant life.

"I hear something," Naruto said. "It sounds like a waterfall." He put his hand to his ear as if trying to hear better. "I think we should head that way." He pointed to the left. "It would be good to be near some clear water. We may even be able to catch some fish." Sasuke nodded in agreement. Naruto lead the way, using his hearing as the guide. It wasn't long before they came to a stop. "See? I was right!"

Sasuke rolled his eyes as he took in the sight of a small waterfall. There was a small lake that looked to be deeper than it was wide. Naruto bent down and cupped a bit of water before bringing it to his mouth. He took a sip and then another one. It tasted pretty good and was just the right temperature. Sasuke took out his canteen and filled it, taking a sip afterwards. He then put his bag down and walked over to the waterfall. He placed his head in it, letting the water wet his hair. His eyes opened as he felt Naruto move beside him. The blond grinned before he closed his eyes. Sasuke stared at Naruto for a few more seconds before he pulled back. He grabbed his bag and Naruto's and slid between the water and the edge of the mountain. He stepped into the cave that was behind the waterfall, deciding that here was a good place to set up camp.

Naruto walked right through the waterfall, not caring that he'd get wet. He began to remove his clothes, wanting to change into something cooler. Sasuke pushed Naruto's bag towards him, not wanting to get wet. Naruto pulled out a pair of dark green shorts and a white tank top. Sasuke peaked at Naruto as the boy got dressed. He had noticed before that Naruto had lost all of his baby fat and had filled out really well. He was still a bit smaller than Sasuke, a fact that Naruto hated. Sasuke on the other hand was glad that he was still bigger than Naruto. He also knew that both had a lot of time let to grow.

Naruto felt eyes on him, but when he turned towards Sasuke, the other was too busy going through his bag. Naruto shrugged as he finished zipping up his shorts. He then sat down and began going through his own bag. He pulled out a scroll that held his dirty laundry. It had been a long time since he'd been able to wash his clothes. Rina and Kaya had helped wash some of his and Sasuke's clothes when they were in their world. But that had been nearly two weeks ago. Thanks to Hinata, Naruto knew how to clean his clothes with just some soap and water. He pulled out a bottle of laundry soap glad that he'd bought more in Light's world. Pulling out a large basin, the blond made his way back to the waterfall. He sat the basin down, letting it fill about half way with some water. Then he put in some of his clothes. The soap came last. Not wanting to get wet, he made a clone do the next part. The clone mixed the clothes around that water, making them soak up the soap as well. He then let his clothes sit for awhile.

"Want yours done too?" Naruto asked. Sasuke nodded pulling out his own scroll. He tossed it to Naruto who unsealed it, taking out Sasuke's bag of clothes. The clone mixed Sasuke's clothes with Naruto's since there was only one basin. Luckily, it was big enough to hold all of their clothes. After ten more minutes, the clone carefully took out the clothes and laid them over a wire that the real Naruto had just finished setting up. The clone washed the basin out so that there was no soap before refilling it. He then dumped the water over the clothes, washing away the soap. The clothes were left hanging to dry. No longer needing the clone, Naruto let it dissipate. "It may take awhile for them to dry. Maybe we can set up a fire that will dry them faster."

Sasuke sighed as he stood up. He made a fire a few feet away from the clothes just in case one fell off. He didn't want any of them to burn. His eyes fell on Naruto's jumpsuit. That was the only thing he didn't mind burning. He was almost tempted to make it fall into the fire "accidentally." But he knew that Naruto would find out that it was done on purpose. Glaring at the jumpsuit one last time, Sasuke made his way back to his backpack and pulled out a book.

Naruto rolled his eyes as he pulled out some food. Deciding that they were safe, Naruto began to make some ramen. He took out a pot and opened three cups of the instant noodles. He heated up some water before pouring the cups' contents into the pan. He counted in his head to keep track of the times. Once he was done, he pulled out two bowls. Knowing that Sasuke wasn't a big fan of ramen, Naruto carefully separated as much of the noodles from the rest of the ramen as he could into Sasuke's bowl. He then pulled out a jar of crushed tomatoes and poured some of it over the noodles. "Here," Naruto said, holding out Sasuke's bowl. Sasuke looked up from his book and stared at the bowl.

"Thanks," Sasuke said, before taking the bowl. He could smell the ramen and wasn't looking forward to eating it, but when his eyes saw the crushed tomatoes, he couldn't help but smile. The Dobe knew him well. Both ate in silence. Once they were done, Naruto made another clone to do the dishes. The clone grumbled about the labor, causing Sasuke to smirk. He hide the almost smiled behind his book so that neither Naruto nor his clone could see it. Naruto let out a yawn before he began to meditate. The night carried on in peace.
