Chapter 61: Would You Like Fries With That?

Natsume and Madara didn't come back. Naruto left a note behind just in case they came back to the cave, but Sasuke had a feeling that if they did, it wouldn't be for at least a few more days. The new world they arrived in was a strange one. There seemed to be no ninjas, no magic, no supernatural forces whatsoever. They had already been there for four days when they felt it. The ground shook before the sound of an explosion echoed through the air. They stepped out of the restaurant they had been eating at to see smoke and dust coming from a pile of stone, the remains of a bridge. On top was a boy with black wings. A crowd of people stood nearby while three people climbed up the rocks to stand before the boy.

"What should we do?" Naruto asked.

"Nothing," Sasuke said. "It looks like they have this handled." Naruto nodded. Sasuke and Naruto carefully watched the scene before them just in case if they needed to take action.

Several words were spoken between the four of them. A fifth person appeared standing behind the boy named Lucifer. He was older than the others. The boy named Maou called him Olba while the girl questioned why he was there. Instead of Olba answering, it was Maou that told her why. Olba was surprised that Maou knew his plan. The girl, Emilia cried as Maou made some remark about a B Movie. Suddenly, Lucifer fired what looked like a purple Chidori Sharp Spear from a finger at Ashiya. After Ashiya fell backward, Maou caught him and lowered him to the ground. Lucifer flew into the air, a magic circle appearing above him. Several of the purple spears started raining down. The onlookers finally started running away. Naruto and Sasuke were careful to stay out of their way. Once the smoke cleared, the two noticed that Maou, Emilia, and Ashiya were gone. They weren't the only ones to notice. Lucifer took off after them while Olba let out an angry yell. He then disappeared.

Naruto and Sasuke came out of hiding and stared at the destruction. Sasuke looked at Naruto and noticed that he wanted to go after Lucifer. It was clear that Lucifer wanted to kill Maou and Emilia. Sasuke too wanted to go after them. He wanted to find out why his chakra was being sealed off. Ever since they arrived, Naruto and Sasuke had only been able to use low level jutsus. Naruto was still able to contact the Kyuubi, but the fox was too tired to talk for long. It was one of the first times that Naruto's usually infinite energy became limited. He still had more energy than Sasuke, but he was growing more and more tired as the days continued.

Sasuke glanced down at his bracelet. It had the number six on it. That meant that they would be stuck in this world for at least two more days. His gaze went back to Naruto. With Naruto's body in this state, Sasuke feared that if they stayed here too long, Naruto may die. The Kyuubi wouldn't allow that, but even he didn't have enough power to bypass the way this world worked. It was something Sasuke noted that he'd have to ask Yuko about it later.

His eyes fell on his left hand. He too wasn't able to access all of his chakra. The biggest difference between him and Naruto was the fact that Sasuke knew what it felt like to be low on his chakra. It was something he had faced several times. Because he was use to it, he didn't feel the stress from the loss. He clenched his hand, dropping it to his side. Looking back at Naruto, he nodded. "Let's go."

By the time they found Maou, he was on the ground bleeding from a hole in his chest. Emilia was on her knees with a girl in her arms. Ashiya was a few feet away from Maou on the ground, clearly unconscious. Lucifer was flying in the sky while Olba seemed to float next to him. Their eyes widened when more magic circles appeared in the sky. With a glance at each other, they moved. Before they reached the bridge to try and stop its fall, it stopped on its own. Naruto and Sasuke looked at each other before glancing back towards Maou. Maou stood in his true form, arms out. It was easy to tell that he had stopped the bridge from falling. Naruto and Sasuke stepped away to keep out of sight. Sasuke felt the change first as his body suddenly grew tired. Eyes shifted to his sharingan, he broke the genjutsu that was trying to make him fall asleep. Knowing how bad Naruto was at genjutsus, he ran towards the blond, not caring if he'd be seen. To his luck, the two groups were too focused on each other to notice Sasuke running a few feet in front of them. He made it to Naruto's side in time to see Naruto fall forward. He caught Naruto and lower himself along with the blond to the ground. He briefly wondered if he should awaken him, but Sasuke decided against it. His eyes moved to the two groups as they began their fight. (for the rest of the fight, see episode 5 of Hataraku Maou-sama)

Naruto awoke in a familiar room. He moved a hand to him head, feeling a pain there. If wasn't his first time having a headache, but usually Kurama made it go away quickly. A glass of water appeared in his view along with another hand holding two pills. "Here," Sasuke said. Naruto popped the pills in his mouth before grabbing the glass. After swallowing the medicine, he took another sip.

"Thanks," he said.

"Hn," Sasuke said.

"What happened?" Naruto asked.

"Maou cast a genjutsu on everyone within a certain area causing them to fall asleep," Sasuke said.

"Maou?" Naruto asked. "Who's Maou?"

"The kid with the black hair that when he transformed, he got ram horns on his head," Sasuke answered.

"Sasuke," Naruto turned and looked him right in the eyes. "What are you talking about?"

Sasuke frowned. If Naruto didn't remember anything, that meant that then genjutsu also had a memory erasing jutsu attached to it. No, not jutsu. From what he heard, it was magic that Maou had used. "What's the last thing you remember?"

"Going out to eat," Naruto said. "We were at a restaurant eating and then… I woke up here."

"I see," Sasuke said. He didn't know if he should tell Naruto about Maou's fight with Lucifer. It really didn't matter on the grand scheme of things if Naruto did remember. Deciding that Naruto would hate him if he ever did remember, Sasuke raised a hand to Naruto's head. Naruto looked confused as Sasuke's finger touched his forehead. A spark of chakra shocked the blond and before he could complain, memories of what happened came back to him. Sasuke waited for over five minutes before he asked if Naruto was ok. With a nod from him, Sasuke continued his explanation of what happened during Maou and Lucifer's fight. Naruto didn't seem a bit surprised at the outcome.

"I could tell that he was getting stronger," Naruto said. "From what I understand, Lucifer and Maou are demons that gain energy the same way. So, if Lucifer gained power from fear than so did Maou. I think he moved there to collect as much power as he could."

Sasuke nodded. "They are from a different world."

"Then they are affected by the rules of this world just like we are. If fear is how they gain power, I have to wonder what we'd have to do to regain ours."

"It won't matter as long as we can last another day." Sasuke held up his bracelet. "The spell Maou used knocked you out for a few hours. Others woke up much sooner. When you didn't, I moved us here."

"I think the lack of having access of Kurama has made my body react differently than it should. Usually, I wouldn't have to take any medicine to get rid of a headache. Kurama would get rid of it shortly after one started. It feels strange being normal." He smiled sadly. Sasuke understood right away why Naruto was sad. Because of Kurama, Naruto had an advantage that no one else in Konoha had. He never got sick and he didn't have to worry about getting hurt. Kurama was always there to heal him. It was the first time Naruto ever felt like he was like everyone else. Sure he still had Kurama inside of him, but because of the way this world worked, he was human. It made him both happy and sad. He was happy to get the chance to live a normal life, but he was sad since his lack of access to Kurama meant he couldn't talk to the fox. It felt like he had lost a loved one, though he knew that once he left this world, things would go back to the way they were.

"You've always been normal." Naruto looked up at that. "Normalcy is different for everyone. And it can change during one's lifetime. What may feel normal to you now may feel strange later on. Just because you are a Jinchuriki doesn't mean you're not human. Honestly, who cares about being normal when we can just be extraordinary."

Naruto's heart began to beat faster in his chest. Sasuke's words made him happy. He smiled. "Yeah. Extraordinary. I like that." Sasuke couldn't help but give the blond a small smile of his own. Naruto blushed as his stomach growled.

Sasuke chuckled. "Let's get you some food."

Deciding to go out for lunch instead of having food from the hotel again, Sasuke and Naruto headed out. They came across a place called MgRonald's. With a shrugged, Naruto entered the building. Sasuke rolled his eyes before following the blond. He nearly collided into Naruto since he had stopped short. Sasuke was about to ask him why he stopped so suddenly, when he saw just who caused him to freeze. Maou was behind the counter with the girl Emilia had in her arms. "Welcome to MgRonalds," the girl said.

"Yes, welcome," Maou said with a smile on his face.

"H-hello," Naruto said. He made his way towards the counter, knowing that it would be impolite to just turn around and walk out. Looking at the menu, Naruto had no idea what he wanted.

"If you don't know what you want, I'd recommend…" Maou began.

"Two MgDoubles," Sasuke interrupted. "And a Caesar salad with tomatoes."

"Alright," Maou said. "Anything to drink."

"An extra large cola for the Dobe and a medium for me," Sasuke said.

"Would that be for here or to go?" Maou asked.

"To go," Sasuke said while Naruto said, "For Here." The two stared at each other. Finally, Sasuke sigh, giving in. "For here."

"The will be $XamountX," Maou said. "Since it was cheaper, I made one of the MgDoubles into a meal. I figured he'd like some fries."

"Hn," Sasuke said. He went to pull out some money only to realize that he didn't have enough left. He frowned and was about to say never mind about the salad when Naruto nudge him.

"Here," Naruto said handing over some money.

"Hn," Sasuke took the money and handed it to Maou who gave him the change. Sasuke tried to give the change to Naruto, but he told him to keep it. Once their food was ready, they took a seat in a corner away from the windows.

"We don't have a lot of money left," Naruto said. "We are gonna have to figure out a way to get more."

"If you're looking for a job, we're hiring," the girl from earlier said. The two shinobi noted that her name tag said she was Chiho Sasaki. "Sorry. I didn't mean to overhear." She bowed and then walked away.

"A job," Naruto said. "Guess I could always try that."

"Dobe," Sasuke said. "I'm not working here."

"Then don't," Naruto said. "I'll work here. You can work somewhere else."

Sasuke gritted his teeth. "Fine." He was beginning to get sick and tired of always giving into the blond. Naruto raised an eyebrow at Sasuke's obvious anger, but he didn't say a word. The two ate in silence before Sasuke left to go find a job.

Naruto made his way back to the counter. "Oh hello again," Maou said. "Was there something else I could get you?"

"Yes," Naruto said. "I was told you were hiring?"

Maou nodded. "We aren't hiring permanently though. We are looking for someone to fix some things around here and just to help out for a few days. So if you are looking for a more steady job then…"

"That's fine," Naruto said. "I only need a few bucks."

"Then can you start right away?" Maou asked. "One of the toilets in the men's room isn't working right. I'd do it myself if…"

"Sure," Naruto said. "I can fix that." He had experience fixing things around his house since there was no one he could ask. No one wanted to help the Demon Boy after all. "Do you have any tools?"

"Yes, actually we do," Maou said. He moved to the little gate and gave Naruto a wave. "It's back here. By the way, I'm Sadao Maou."

"Naruto Uzumaki," Naruto said.

"Naruto?" Maou asked. "Like the ingredient in ramen?"

"The same," Naruto said. "My parents named me after the main character in a book my godfather wrote. Apparently he thought of the name while eating a bowl of ramen."

"Cool," Maou said. "So what is the name of that book?"

"I'm not sure if you guys have it here," Naruto said. "But it is called the Tales of a Gutsy Ninja."

"Hm," Maou said. "I'll have Urushihara look for it later." He lead Naruto to the employee room. Opening a locker, Maou pulled out a bag filled with tools. "Here you go." He looked at a clock. "It is just after one now. Let me know when you are done and I'll either give you your next job or schedule for tomorrow."

"Sure!" Naruto grinned. He followed Maou back to the front and then headed towards the bathrooms. Maou has to go back to work since Chiho need his help. Naruto walked into the men's bathroom and instantly knew which toilet was broken. A sign hung on the door of one of the stalls. Opening the door, he looked down. Yup, it was definitely something he could handle.

Sasuke walked around for a half hour before he almost ran into Emilia. She was with another girl that Sasuke could tell was a coworker. From the way she talked, it was clear that she had no idea who Emilia really was. Sasuke chose to ignore them. He continued walking through town until he realized that he had no idea where to go. Turning around, he heard a crash followed by a curse.

"God dammit!" an old man said. "These boxes are too heavy."

The old man reminded Sasuke of a Konoha villager that had hired Team 7 to carry some boxes from his store to his house. The memory cause Sasuke's feet to carry him towards the old man. The old man tried to lift up a box, but it wouldn't budge. Sasuke leaned down and lifted the box. "Where do you need it?"

At first, the old man look surprised. Then, with his cane, he pointed to his car. "In the very back." Sasuke nodded before walking to the back of the care and carefully putting it in. "You must be strong. Got a few minutes to help an old man?" Sasuke nodded. "Good." He motioned for Sasuke to follow. "There are a few more that I need." He lead Sasuke through his house and into a room that had boxes all over the place.

'A few?' Sasuke thought. 'More like a ton.'

"Usually my son helps me, but the no good brat is out on a date with another good for nothing," the old man shook his head. "I don't know who he gets his stupidity from. My wife was smart cookie, a teacher of sorts. If she saw our son now…" Again he shook his head. "I pity the thought." The man walked over to the first stack of boxes. "I need all of these first." Without a word, Sasuke bent down and picked up the stack of boxes. The old man's eyes widened as Sasuke easily carried them.

'Seems like my strength is still above average,' Sasuke thought as he carried the boxes out to the car. 'Not quite normal, but it will do.'

"Wow!" the old man exclaimed. "I was right. You are a strong young man. Look, if you can help me with all of those boxes and even help bring them into my store, I'll pay you." Sasuke nodded before heading back inside to grab some more boxes. Once all of the boxes were in the back of the car, the old man got into the driver's seat. "Come on. Get in!" Sasuke hesitated for just a few second before getting in the car. It was his first time ever being in one.

After fixing the toilet, Naruto was given a list of other things that needed to be fixed. One by one, he fixed almost everything on the list. Maou was amazed that someone could get so much work done so fast. He then noticed that Naruto was tired. "Why don't you call it a day?" Maou asked.

"But you still need the fryer fixed," Naruto said.

"It can wait," Maou said. "You look tired. Why don't you have something to eat and drink. On us of course!"

"Well, if you put it that way," Naruto smiled. He took a seat as Maou went to make him some food.

Maou came back a few minutes later with a small tray of food. "The Boss should be in soon. I'll let her know what you've already done. If you want, you can come back the same time tomorrow. She may have more stuff for you to do then."

"Alright," Naruto said. He began to eat.

Once Sasuke was done carrying the boxes into the old man's store, he asked if Sasuke would help him put the contents up. Apparently the boxes held books that the old man was going to sell in his used book store. Sasuke silently agreed and started putting the books up as he listen to the old man brag about some of the book he found. Each box was marked with where its contents were to go. Being the organized man he was, Sasuke made sure to follow what the boxes said. He put them in alphabet order by author on the shelves, even going as far as to fix the ones that were already there.

"You know," the old man said. "If you're looking for a job, I don't mind hiring you. You seem to be a good boy."

"I'm only going to be here for a few days," Sasuke said.

"Ah so you do talk," the old man said. "I thought maybe you were a mute, but you are just really quiet." Sasuke shrugged. "You are the opposite of my son. The boy doesn't know when to shut up. He'd talk endlessly if I didn't stop him. He doesn't seem to understand that not everyone wants to know when he last baked a cake or the story of his first time riding a bike." For the xth time the man shook his head. "I really don't know who he gets it from. My wife was a quiet soul. Not as quiet as you, but still not very talkative."

'From you,' Sasuke thought. 'He gets it from you.'

"So you are just visiting then?" the old man asked.

"Something like that," Sasuke said. For some reason, he didn't want to lie to this man.

"Then how about you help me for however long you can," the old man said. "Like I said before, I'll pay you." He pointed to a chair. "All you have to do it sit there and watch the store. If someone comes in, you help them to find whatever they need." He grabbed Sasuke's arm and pulled him to the desk. "This is the register. You type in the price of a book and then press enter. It will open and you give the customer their change. If they have more than one book, hit the plus button after putting in the price of each book and then hit enter. If they need to put a book back, put in the book's price and then hit the minus button. This is a calculator if you need help with giving the change." The old man continued to show Sasuke how things worked. It seemed simple and since the place was quiet, Sasuke agreed to work there for a few days. "Then I'll see you tomorrow." Sasuke nodded. "Is there anywhere you need to go? I can give you a ride." Sasuke gave him the name of the hotel he was staying at. The old man drive him to the hotel. "Feel free to bring any food you want tomorrow. Just be careful not to spill anything." The old man waved before driving off.

Sasuke headed up to his room. Naruto was already there, watching TV. "Oh hey! Did you find a place to work?"

"Yeah," Sasuke said. He walked over to his bag. "I'm working at a used book store."

"Sounds boring," Naruto said.

"Better than at a burger place," Sasuke said.

"Hey!" Naruto yelled. "At least I'm getting paid. Plus, the food is cheap since I get a discount."

"Hn," Sasuke said. He pulled out a set of night clothes before heading into the bathroom to take a shower.

Naruto followed after him, not even caring that Sasuke had already taken off his shirt. "I'll wash whatever you need me to in the morning. They have some washing machines here that just take some change."

"Hn," Sasuke grunted.

"Why are you so mad?" Naruto asked.

"Dobe," Sasuke said, turning towards him.

"Yes Teme?"

"Get out."

Naruto rolled his eyes. "Whatever." He closed the door behind him and walked back over to the bed. He laid down and continued to watch the show he'd been watching when Sasuke walked in. It wasn't long before Sasuke joined him. They couldn't afford a room with two bed so they had to buy one with a single bed. It didn't really matter since they were used to sharing a bed. Sasuke turned the lamp next to him off before he got comfortable. "I'll finish watching this then go to bed."

"Hn."

Naruto sighed before turning back to the TV. He was amazed that Sasuke could sleep with the TV being on. Back when they were on Team 7 together, Sasuke would wake up at the smallest sound and he couldn't go to bed unless there was complete silence. It was something they always fought over. Naruto glanced at Sasuke who was already asleep. 'I guess things do change.'

I have no idea how much the 2 MgDoubles and Salad cost, so I had to leave it as $XamountX. I thought about saying something like $13.95 or about 1550 yen, but prices vary from each place due to taxes and stuff. So, feel free to fill in the blank!

Also, I thought about calling this chapter Naruto and Sasuke are Part-Timers, but decided against it. Would you like fries with that? sounded funnier.
