Chapter 85: The Silence Between Them III: Messed Up Emotions

"Is that why you killed my brother?" Euphemia asked.

"No," Zero said

"Then why?" Euphemia asked.

"Because Clovis was an offspring of the Britannian Emperor," Zero answered. "That reminds me, you're one of his children too, aren't you." He pointed a gun at Euphemia."

"Lelouch, you would never shoot me, would you?" Euphemia asked.

"No, I would never do that," Lelouch said. "You will be doing the shooting, Euphy."

"Huh?" Euphy asked.

"This ceremony is being broadcasted globally and the world is going to witness you, a Britannia Princess shoot Zero," Lelouch said. "What do you think would happen next?"

"Rioting would break out, I imagine."

"Right, Zero would be a martyr, tricked into a death trap, and instantly your popularity will crash to earth."

"What kind of nonsense are you saying? You should just help me rebuild Japan."

A gun shot rang out. The bullet had gone straight into Euphemia. Zero, Lelouch had shot her.

"The formal seventeen air to the impartial throne, Lelouch vi Britannia" Charles said. "It's been a long time, hasn't it, my errant son."

"How dare you!" Lelouch yelled.

Suzaku pushed his face into the ground. "You won't use your Geass." Lelouch let out a noise of frustration mixed with pain. Suzaku ignored him. "Your Majesty, I have a request. Please sire, allow me to join the Knights of the Round, the twelve strongest knights of the Britannian Empire."

Suzaku as the new Zero jumped over Nunnally. Lelouch took out a gun calling him an impudent fool. But Suzaku swung his sword, swiping away his gun. Lelouch smirked as the memory of what he had ordered Suzaku to do played in his head. His smirk turned into a smile. 'Suzaku, you're going to be a hero now, the Messiah who saved the world from Emperor Lelouch vi Britannia, the enemy of the world, as Zero."

Suzaku plunged his sword into Lelouch's chest. "Lelouch," he cried, tears dripping inside the mask.

"The punishment for what you've done shall be this then," Lelouch slumped forward. "You will live on, always wearing that mask, serving as a knight for justice and truth." He pressed a hand to just below where the sword entered his body, letting the blood coat his fingers. "You will no longer live your life as Suzaku Kururugi." He moved his hand to Suzaku's mask. "You shall sacrifice the ordinary pleasures of your life for the benefit of the world, for eternity."

"This Geass," Suzaku cried. "I do solemnly accept."

Sasuke sat up quickly, sweat dripping down onto his shaking hands. His eyes were wide. Now he knew why things felt so familiar. This brought about several questions: how did they get here? Did someone from this world travel to Sophie's and make an anime about it? But Sasuke had already finished watching the first two seasons and what was happening now didn't happen. Just what was going on?

Sasuke got up and headed for the bathroom. He found some more medicine and took it. Stripping himself of his clothes, Sasuke got into the shower. His mind was running wild, as he tried to process everything. 'I have to calm down and look at what I know. Zero killed Euphemia, that much I know for sure. Suzaku made that clear. It's also clear that Suzaku knows that Lelouch is Zero. But Lelouch seems to not remember being Zero. And Rolo… with his existence, that means we are… Wait! By now, Lelouch should have his memories back. Arg! This is so confusing.' He glanced at his bracelet. 'Will he know?' Sasuke turned off the shower and wrapped a towel around his waist. He headed back to his bedroom and sat down on the bed. He tapped the mirror. "Watanuki."

"Oh, Sasuke," Watanuki said in surprise. Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "It's nothing. How can I help you?"

"This world we're in, what can you tell me?" Sasuke asked.

"I don't think that's what you really want to ask," Watanuki said.

Sasuke paused in thought for a moment. "It's different, but very similar. This world, these people, I… I don't understand."

Watanuki sighed. "I'm sure Yuko told you about alternate worlds; this is one of them. Here, at this point in time, Lelouch does in fact have his memories of being Zero back. But there is a big difference between the one you've seen and the one you are in. I'm sure you've caught on to that." Sasuke nodded. "Do you want to know what that difference is?"

"No," Sasuke shook his head. "I'd rather not." 'Knowing would only complicate things.'

Naruto walked with Suzaku and Lelouch as they made their rounds. Neither asked him about what had happened between him and Sasuke again. He was grateful for that. Instead, they got him to enjoy himself at a few of the stands. Eventually, Rolo dragged Lelouch away, leaving Naruto alone with Suzaku. The two felt awkward around each other. They quietly grabbed a snack and walked over to a hill, sitting away from other people. It was Naruto who broke the silence.

"You two seem close," he said. Suzaku looked over at him. "You and Lelouch."

"We were childhood friends," Suzaku said. "But some things have changed."

"I can understand that," Naruto said. A hand went to the right side of his chest where Sasuke had once Chidori-punched a hole through him. "I want to believe that one day, things will go back to how it was, back to all the fun times." He smiled sadly. "But the past is just the past. You may not be able to change it, but you don't have to let it affect your present or future."

"Naruto," Suzaku said. "You…" A scream was heard and the two of them jumped to their feet. It didn't take long for them to come across the person who screamed. Suzaku was surprised that he hadn't recognized Shirley's voice. "Shirley?"

"Suzaku, he has Lelouch!" Shirley said. She pointed towards a man who had an arm around Lelouch and a knife to his throat. Suzaku cursed. He wouldn't be able to take that man down since he was too close to Lelouch. Naruto didn't move. He couldn't risk using his chakra to save Lelouch in case it put him and Sasuke in danger.

Lelouch cursed. 'I can't use my Geass in front of all these people. Especially Suzaku.' He glanced over at Rolo. 'No Rolo. You can't use yours here either.' Rolo caught his eye and he nodded. 'Good. Now I have to figure out how to get out of this.'

"Tell me!" The man holding him yelled. "Tell me why you Britannians attacked us! And why… why did you kill my little girl!"

'He was there,' Lelouch thought. 'I can use that.' "You and your daughter were there at the recent battle between Britannia and the Black Knights."

"Y-yes," the man said. "And she was killed! By you Britannians!" His body was shaking.

"A lot of people died," Lelouch said. "Too many innocent people."

"That's right!" the man said, tears pouring down his face. "We didn't do anything. And they bombed us." His hand with the knife began to lower. Suzaku saw it and leapt into action. Naruto also moved. Naruto grabbed the man while Suzaku grabbed Lelouch. The man managed to slash a bit of Lelouch's neck.

"Lelouch!" Suzaku yelled while Rolo yelled, "Brother!"

Lelouch put his hand to his neck. "I… I'm ok."

"The nurse's office," Suzaku said. He lifted Lelouch up and started running towards the school's nurse's office. He kicked open the door and lowered Lelouch to the nearest bed. Grabbing a roll of bandages, Suzaku dropped to his knees beside him. He quickly wrapped Lelouch's neck up. "Please."

Lelouch chuckled. "Suzaku, I'm fine." He sat up. "It was only a flesh wound." Suzaku wrapped his arms around Lelouch. "Suzaku?"

"I can't… I can't lose you."

Lelouch smiled. "Suzaku." He raised his own arms and wrapped them around Suzaku. "It's alright. I'm here." He pulled back and Suzaku let his arms drop. He had tears in his eyes. "Don't cry." He grabbed the back of Suzaku's head and pulled him into a kiss. "Suzaku."

"Lelouch." Suzaku moved forward, pushing Lelouch down on the bed. He brushed some of Lelouch's hair to the side before he leaned down and kissed him. "Lelouch."

Naruto knocked the man out and some officers dragged him away. Milly came over and with Shirley's help, they managed to calm everyone around. People began to go back to having fun at the festival. There were some news crew members that were filming. Luckily, they hadn't caught Lelouch or the incident on camera. Rolo had to hide behind the tree until everyone was gone. He didn't want anyone knowing who he really was. When he saw the chance, Rolo made his way to the nurse's office.

Suzaku moved away from the bed, grabbing his pants and putting them back on. 'What have I done?' He heard a groan from the person behind him. 'Euphy… I…'

"Suzaku," Lelouch whispered.

Suzaku's eyes widened. 'I… to Lelouch…' "I have to leave." He got up, grabbed his shirt and put it on. He covered Lelouch up before he headed for the door. When he opened it, he was surprised to see Rolo there.

Rolo looked past Suzaku. At what he saw, anger took over his face. "Suzaku!"

"Rolo!" Lelouch yelled. Suzaku turned slightly to see Lelouch sitting up, sheet wrapped around him. "It's ok. Let him go." Rolo wanted to argue, but at the look on Lelouch's face, he stepped aside. Suzaku took one last look at Lelouch before bolting out of the room.

Rolo walked over to Lelouch. "Brother?"

"It's ok," Lelouch said. "I'm fine."

Naruto stood by the door, having witnessed the entire interaction. He guessed what had happened. It wasn't his place to interfere. He turned around and headed back out to the festival. Naruto tried to enjoy himself, but when he realized that he just couldn't, Naruto headed back to the student council room.

Sasuke looked up when there was a knock on the door. He had just finished saying goodbye to Watanuki. He stood up and opened the door. Naruto had his hand out, reaching for the doorknob. Blue eyes met black. "I… I came to check in on you," Naruto said, voice just above a whisper.

Sasuke was a bit surprised to hear Naruto be so soft spoken. He was usually very loud until the situation called for it. Sasuke didn't sense anyone else nearby. "I'm fine."

"Good," Naruto said. "I'll let you rest." Naruto turned around and walked towards his room. He threw one last look over at Sasuke before walking into his room. He walked over to his bed, crawled onto it, wrapped himself with a blanket, and closed his eyes. Naruto didn't want to think about anything. Kurama thought about talking to Naruto, but he decided to give him the silence he wanted.

Sasuke hesitated. Something told him to go to Naruto. But he had something else on his mind. He returned to his room and finished getting dressed. A few people came up to him as he was searching for his target. It surprised him for more than one reason. Rumors of an Eleven holding Lelouch hostage hit his ears. He followed them to the nurse's office. He entered the room to find Lelouch sitting on the bed and Rolo standing beside him.

"Sasuke?" Lelouch said. "If you're looking for Naruto, he's…"

"No," Sasuke interrupted. "I was looking for you."

"If it is about my neck, I'm fine," Lelouch said. Sasuke's eyes went to the bandage around Lelouch's neck. His eyes then went to Rolo's form. Lelouch saw the movement and caught on to what Sasuke wanted. "Rolo, do you mind going to help Milly and the others? I was supposed to help with the giant pizza." Rolo looked over at Sasuke. "Please?"

Rolo sighed. "Alright. But if anything happens, please call me."

"I will," Lelouch said. Rolo closed the door behind him. "Now then, what is it you'd like to talk about, Sasuke."

"I have some questions I'd like you to answer," Sasuke said. Lelouch nodded for him to continue. "I'll get straight to the point then. Why haven't you told Suzaku the truth about Euphemia and your Geass?"

Lelouch startled. 'How does he know about that? Is he a spy? Does he have a Geass? No, I shouldn't jump to conclusions. I don't even know how much he knows.' "What are you talking about?"

"You don't have to lie to me," Sasuke said. He walked closer to Lelouch. "Zero."

Lelouch cursed. 'Dammit. I should have kept Rolo on standby. What should I do?'

"I haven't told anyone, nor will I tell anyone. I just want you to answer my questions."

"And what will you do with the answers?"

"Nothing."

Lelouch looked at him in surprise. He tried to get a read on Sasuke to see if he was lying. But it was clear that Sasuke was telling the truth. "Suzaku doesn't need to know."

"Even if it means that Suzaku wouldn't hate you so much? He may even forgive you since it wasn't really your fault."

"But it was. If I had been more careful with my words, the massacre wouldn't have happened." He clenched his fists. "And Euphy would still be alive."

"That might be true, but I still think Suzaku has the right to know." Lelouch stayed silent. "Next question, Nunnally…" Lelouch flinched at the name. "Her wish is for the world to be a gentler place. Is that really what your goal is?"

"I will do anything for her happiness."

"Even if you have to sacrifice yourself?

Lelouch didn't even hesitate to answer. "Yes." Sasuke paused. He knew he had a lot more things he wanted to ask Lelouch, but he wasn't sure how to word them. The answers would simply satiate his curiosity. "What else do you want to ask?"

"Nothing important. I suppose that I just want to understand you and this world."

'This world?' Lelouch thought. 'What does that mean? Should I ask C.C.? Wait… could he…?' His hand twitched.

"It won't work on me, your Geass."

"Do you have a Code?"

"No." Sasuke pointed at his eyes.

'They look different.' "Contacts?" Sasuke smirked. "They must be specially made to block my Geass from working." Sasuke stayed silent. "So you have a Geass?"

"I guess you could say that." Sasuke turned around to leave.

"And Naruto, what about him?"

"As you said," Sasuke looked over his shoulder at Lelouch. "He doesn't need to know." Lelouch was left alone to ponder what that meant.

When Lelouch arrived at the after party, he was a bit surprised to see Suzaku there. He was standing with the rest of the council members. He also saw Naruto dancing with a female student. Looking around, he found Sasuke leaning against a wall in the corner. There was a slight frown on his face. Following his gaze, he found Naruto laughing as he spun around the girl he was dancing with. It was a different girl. Lelouch was about to head over towards Sasuke when Rivalz called him over.

"Hey Lelouch!" Rivalz yelled. He waved at him. Lelouch sighed as he walked over to him. Suzaku glanced at him before looking away. Rivalz threw his arm around Suzaku. "Did you know that Suzaku here has never danced with anyone before?"

"Rivalz," Suzaku grumbled.

'That's a lie,' Lelouch thought. 'He danced with Nunnaly.' "Really now? A popular guy like you? I'm sure someone here wants to dance with you."

"He turned them down," Rivalz complained. "I'd dance with someone if they asked." His eyes went to Milly.

"If you want to dance with someone, just ask them," Naruto said, walking over to them. He waved at the girl he had just finished dancing with.

"I suppose you're right," Lelouch said. He walked up to Shirley. "Would you have this dance?" He bowed, holding out a hand..

Shirley glanced at Suzaku before taking the offered hand. Lelouch pulled her to the dance floor. Milly put a hand on Suzaku's shoulder, giving him a look of sympathy. She then grabbed Rivalz's arm. "Come Rivalz! Let's dance!" She pulled him towards the dance floor. Suzaku and Rolo looked at each other. Rolo glared and took a few steps away from Suzaku.

"Is something wrong?" Naruto asked, tilting his head to the side.

"It's nothing," Suzaku mumbled.

"Yeah, nothing," Rolo crossed his arms. He had an angry pout on his face. Naruto decided not to push them further.

"Rolo!" Shirley called when the song ended. She pulled Rolo onto the dancefloor. Lelouch walked back over to Suzaku and Naruto, looking exhausted.

Suzaku couldn't help but chuckle. "Tired out after only one song?"

"Yeah, well not all of us are as energized as you are," Lelouch protested. "Well? Are you going to show us how a Knight of the Round dances?" Suzaku opened his mouth as if to say something only to close it. "Maybe you shouldn't have come then." He straightened and walked over to Sasuke.

"I think you should apologize," Naruto said. "Even if you think you didn't do anything wrong, it might be better to concede."

"This isn't something an apology will fix," Suzaku said.

"May I ask what happened?" Naruto asked.

"I did something I shouldn't have purley on emotion," Suzaku whispered. "I regret it, but only a part of me does. And that's not a good thing. What I did, can't be undone nor can I fix it."

"Still, you have to start somewhere," Naruto said. Suzaku didn't give him a reply. Naruto was asked by another girl to dance and he accepted the offer. Suzaku was left alone to ponder over what Naruto said. He glanced over at Lelouch and Sasuke, wondering what the two were talking about.

Sasuke looked up when he felt Lelouch nearing him. "Why are you hiding over here?"

"I'm not hiding," Sasuke said. This was somewhat true. In all honesty, he had chosen to stand in this corner to hide from the people that were surely going to ask him to dance. But much to his surprise and delight no one has asked.

"Sadly, not a lot of Britannians want to dance with the Japanese," Lelouch said.

"Hn," Sasuke grunted. 'Right, they think I'm an Eleven.' "What is it?"

"I want to ask you something," Lelouch admitted. "About Naruto."

"Just ask him," Sasuke said.

"Is it alright if I ask him what he knows about Geass?" Lelouch asked, making sure to lower his voice. "It may expose your power." Sasuke raised an eyebrow at that. "He already knows, doesn't he? Then does he have a Code?"

Sasuke shook his head. "He's not immortal like C.C." 'Though he acts like he is,' he thought bitterly.

"So you even know about her. Now, I really want to know what your Geass is."

"I'm sure you have some guesses."

"A few." Lelouch nodded. 'You can either see the future or something along those lines.'

After the dance, the council members, Naruto, and Sasuke had dinner. It was a bit awkward as Rivalz, Milly, Shirley, and Naruto tried to keep up a conversation. Lelouch was clearly lost in his thoughts while Suzaku kept getting distracted by every movement Lelouch made. Sasuke was his normal quiet self and Naruto didn't want to push him into joining the conversation. Milly and Shirely knew there was something wrong. Lelouch and Suzaku weren't talking and that concerned them. They also wondered if something happened between Naruto and Sasuke. They had noticed that the two hadn't said a word to each other. Although they hadn't known them for long, they still found it weird. Rivalz didn't seem to notice the awkwardness.

"Argh!" Milly growled in frustration as she slammed her hands down on the table and stood up. "I can't take this anymore! What is going on with the four of you?" She motioned to Lelouch, Suzaku, Naruto, and Sasuke. Naruto looked at her in confusion while Lelouch and Suzaku looked away. Sasuke on the other hand just ignored her and took a sip of her drink. She grew angry at their reactions. "Seriously? Are you really going to act like this?"

"Milly," Shirley tried.

"No!" Milly said, her voice still raised. "Rivalz, Rolo, Shirley!"

"Yes, Madam President?" The three mentioned asked.

"Grab them!" Milly ordered. Since she was the closest to Naruto, she grabbed his arm.

"Shirley?" Suzaku asked, as she grabbed him.

"Sorry Suzaku," Shirley said.

"Sorry big brother," Rolo said, grabbing Lelouch.

Rivalz hesitated as Sasuke glared at him. Rivalz looked at Milly before gaining the confidence to at least try to follow her command. Sasuke growled as Rivalz went to grab his arm. Deciding that Naruto would most likely just follow them willingly, she let him go and grabbed Sasuke's other arm. Milly and Rivalz dragged Sasuke into the nearest empty room, before locking it behind him. In his confusion, Naruto had been pushed into the room. Shirley and Rolo on the other hand locked Lelouch and Suzaku in the kitchen.

"None of you will be let out unless you come to a reconciliation," Milly said.

Sasuke thought about just breaking down the door, but one look at Naruto changed his mind. He wasn't really happy about being locked in a bathroom though. Naruto didn't say anything as he leaned against the sink. Sasuke on the other hand sat down on the closed toilet seat. Neither spoke.

Lelouch and Suzaku chose to start doing some dishes. It reminded them of the night before. To go from an argument to what had happened in the nurse's office… The two didn't know what to say. Once all of the dishes were done, Lelouch struggled to sit on the counter. Suzaku chuckled before helping him up. Lelouch mumbled out a thanks. Suzaku nodded before he joined Lelouch. "You know," both said at the same time. They laughed.

"Go ahead," Suzaku said.

"You piss me off," Lelouch whispered.

"Eh?" Suzaku asked.

"I said that you're pissing me off!" Lelouch nearly yelled. He turned slightly towards Suzaku. "You always go on about your sense of justice and then you act like I'm important while at the same time, you shun me. You are a walking contradiction. You're annoying, and you're stupid, and you're an exercise nut with superhuman stamina and I...I…" he trailed off as tears began to pur down his face. "...and I love you!" He covered his face with his hands and tried to wipe away the tears.

Suzaku grabbed his hands, pulled them down, and kissed Lelouch. He pulled backwards a few seconds later. A somewhat sad smile was on his face. "I don't know if I can love you the way you deserve to be loved." He leaned forward so that their foreheads were pressed against each other. "But I'd like to try."

"T-that's enough," Lelouch said. "I don't deserve more than that." He freed his hands from Suzaku's before wrapping his arms around him.

"Are you sure about this, Shirley?" Rolo asked.

"I've known for a while now," Shirley said. "And I've accepted it." She held back her own tears. "But it's still hard."

"I don't know what it means to be in love with someone," Rolo said. He looked down at his phone charm. "But I do know what it means to love Lelouch."

"I still love Lulu," Shirley said. "And I don't think that will ever change." She unlocked the kitchen door.

Milly frowned. She couldn't hear anything from Naruto or Sasuke. "Madam President?" Rivalz asked. "Should we see if they're ok?" Milly hesitated before unlocking the bathroom door. She opened it and looked inside. Naruto and Sasuke hadn't moved. It was clear that nothing had happened. Milly went to close the door, only for a hand to stop her. She blinked in confusion as Sasuke pulled it free from her grasp. He then walked around her and up towards his room. Milly stared after him as Naruto came up behind her.

"Can I come out now?" he asked.

"Oh," Milly said. "Yes." She stepped to the side.

Naruto stepped out of the bathroom and looked around. "Are Lelouch and Suzaku still locked up?"

"No," Rolo said, walking up to them with Shirley by his side. "We unlocked the door. I don't think they've noticed though." Shirley and Milly blushed at that. Rivalz and Naruto looked at them in confusion. "What happened with Sasuke?"

"He's fast," Milly said. Rolo raised an eyebrow at that.

"Was there a reason you locked us in the bathroom?" Naruto asked.

"To force you two to make up," Milly answered.

"But we aren't fighting," Naruto said. "Sasuke wasn't feeling well earlier and he isn't much of a talker. So if it was the silence that bothered you, please don't worry about it."

"Are you sure?" Milly asked. "I find how you two are acting strange."

"Yes, we're fine," Naruto said.

Lelouch and Suzaku came out of the kitchen. When Rolo saw how red Lelouch's eyes were, he went to punch Suzaku. But Suzaku dodged him. "Rolo!"

"Let me hit you!" Rolo yelled. He thought about just using his Geass, but it could expose him to Suzaku. Lelouch would also know what he did.

"It's ok, Rolo," Lelouch said. "Suzaku didn't do anything."

"Then why do you look like that?" Rolo asked.

"I…" Lelouch blushed. "I kind of got myself worked up. But Suzaku calmed me down." He smiled. "We're ok now." He grabbed Suzaku's hand.

"Well, then," Milly clapped her hands together. "I believe that it is time to go to bed. Rolo, you don't mind sharing a room with Rivalz? I'll share one with Shirley."

"You are gonna stay here, Madam President?" Lelouch asked in surprise.

"Yes, we will!" Milly said. "So make sure to keep it down!" She winked before she started up the stairs. Shirley waved at them as she followed after Milly. Rolo grudgingly showed Rivalz to his room. Lelouch blushed as Suzaku took his hand and led him to his bedroom.

Naruto looked after them. He wasn't really tired. He decided to take a stroll and he left the council building. From the campus, he could see the sky and its beautiful stars. It was a sight Naruto was going to miss when they moved on from this world.
