Chapter: 01 Not for the Faint of Heart

It was late at night in LA. Dr. Frakes was busy at work adjusting a laser.

"Doctor?"

"Terri? You're still here?" Frakes asked.

"Yeah, I brought the Chinese food like you asked." Terri, the young blue-haired scientist, held up the food.

"Right, right."

"Ah, what are you working on?"

"It's a new project," Frakes told her assistant. "Our benefactor sought out my expertise," She brought out a small container holding a spider. "He's brought me something that I believe might magnify, alter, or enhance physical traits. With the proper equipment, we might use it to alter biology itself." Franke slipped some goggles over her eyes.

"What, how's that possible? Manipulation or morphic field or?"

Frake didn't bother to listen as she flipped the switch zapping the container, the container itself seemed to vaporize almost instantly, and the spider seemed to squeal in pain. Frakes turned off the laser.

She looked at the spider, wondering if that had killed it. "I suppose we will have to do a dissection."

Frakes took out a pen and went to poke it but found herself unable. The spider's leg jolted, pushing away at the pen. Frakes pushed in, but suddenly the pen was pushed back. Before she knew it, she was forced back. The spider was scurrying away.

"Terri! Get that spider!"

Terri said, "Spider?"

Terri was stunned and bordering blinded. The laser was so bright she blinded her for the moment. Terri had managed to turn away, preventing permanent blindness. Terri swung the bags of Chinese food around, trying to get what she barely saw on the fringes of her sight. The spider managed to jump on one of the bags and got spun around. They landed on a nearby tank; before anything could be done, Terri swung and knocked down the tank opening it up. Before anything could be done, a small pink frog jumped out, and its tongue quickly grabbed the spider. Before her eyes, Frakes saw the frog eat this spider.

Terri was still swinging wildly, and Frank managed to catch the frog. Frakes had half a mind to crush the frog in her hands for her trouble, but she noticed something strange as she was about to. Its skin had been pink, but a blue pattern like a spider materialized on its back.

Frake smiled, "Maybe you will be worth the trouble."

Anne Boonchuy was a typical student and not so great in science class. Usually, she'd try to bum off Marcy, but her grades were slipping, and Varsity Tennis would drop her if she didn't pick them up. Her teacher gave her an extra credit assignment to help. Marcy would generally love to help, but she was in a video game tournament. So it was up to Anne to finish the work. It was simple enough to do a report on one of the one exhibits. Anne went to a nearby science museum, the Brainasium, and she'd spend most of her Saturday there, so she was depressed by it. If she hurried, she might be able to save some of her Saturday.

She wouldn't get that chance as an explosion rang out. All the lights and power, in general, were turned off.

"What?" Anne looked around, unsure what was happening.

Anne fell to the ground, and more explosions were heard. People screamed and started to run. Anne having a moment to compose herself, began to run toward the entrance.

"Frakes!"

A voice rang out, it distorted, and soon she saw its source.

In the atrium hovered in the air, a man in a leather jacket hovered above them with long feather-like metallic wings with whirling propellers. He wore a long, almost plague-like mask with dark lenses.

"Frakes! Come out!"

People who had run her had started to run away, parents carrying their children trying to find an exit. The hall was filled with the scream of crying, terrified children.

Anne herself froze in terror mind couldn't comprehend what was happening. That turned out to be the mistake. This man rushed down and grabbed Anne by the neck, pinning her to the wall. The wings pulled back, and Anne could see her struggling reflection in those lenses.

"Frakes! Come out! Or I'll start picking people off!"

The man pulled out a strange-looking gun from his belt. "Nothing personal, kid."

The barrel of the gun began to glow bright with purple energy.

As the weapon was turned to her head, Anne could feel the heat in her chest beating like crazy. For a moment, she thought this would be how she was going to die. She was never going to see her parents. She was never going to talk to Marcy, never going to get to see Sasha. It had been a while since Sasha moved away after her parents divorced, but they still emailed, and she always spent time with them when she visited. She remembered being small and playing in a park with both of them. She wanted to go back there.

She closed her eyes and braced herself.

CLANK!

Anne opened up to see a young woman with blue hair in a lab coat holding a fire extinguisher. They had slammed it on the man's helmeted head.

"Run!"

The man had accidentally released Anne when he got hit and Anne, driven by fear, ran as fast as she could.

The wings extended out, and Terri screamed as one ripped off her arms. Anne ran as fast as she could, ignoring the screaming. Anne ran and ran. She found herself deeper in the building and pushed past secure doors that would be locked if the electric locks worked.

Anne found herself in a lab, with machines everywhere, dissected animals, and more animals in cages. Anne heard someone coming and jumped behind a table and hid. In a small terrarium was the small pink frog looking at the girl.

Dr. Frakes ran in and started to grab her notes. "I can't believe it."

She rushed to a laser in the middle of the room. She began to fiddle with the hatch, and a glowing blue light peered from inside it.

"Frakes."

The door was blasted open as the man walked in.

"Toomes? is that you?"

"Good to see you too, but enough pleasantries. I know you have it."

"Have what?" Franke gently closed the hatch.

"Don't play me; rumors have been going around, and once you know what you are looking for, it wasn't hard to trace. So how about we do this peacefully or-" He raised his gun.

"No, I like the second way better." Frakes pressed a button on the laser, which fired directly at Toomes. Toomes returned and fired back. Both lasers collided in mid-air, the struggle pushing things around by the sheer colliding force.

The small frog used this chance, pushed over its terrarium, and broke the lock open. Nearby he saw another one containing an old frog and a tadpole. It hopped over to it and began to push it away from the blast.

Toomes beak opened up and fired another blast striking the laser, exploding it. Shard of metal and other things flew through the air. The tiny frog caught a glint of a blue gem. It stretched out its tongue, grabbing and pulling it into its mouth. It continued to push the terrarium until it fell over, but it didn't hit the ground. Instead, it fell into her open backpack of Anne. Anne was trembling in fear. She didn't notice anything fall into her bag, but seeing all the smoke filling the room, she crawled away and saw a door.

She pushed through the door and broke into a sprint, and she almost had a heart attack when she saw a gun. For once, there was some luck as it was a police officer who noted she was a scared teen,

"Come on this way," they motioned to an officer, "Get her outside."

The rest of the officers continued toward the lab, where they heard the fight.

Toomes had been slammed into a wall by the explosion. As he opened his eyes and checked on his equipment, he found that Frakes had managed to use the chance to escape. He wasn't as lucky as the police quickly rushed into the room with their weapons drawn. Toomes promptly pulled his gun and fired into the ceiling, causing it to collapse. As the police were forced to take cover, the sunlight rushed in, and Toomes flew out of the hole in the ceiling.

The rest of the day wasn't all the better for Anne. The ambulances had shown up and checked everyone for injuries. The police did try to question her but seeing how scared she was, and they didn't develop too much into it. Many people had taken out their phones and gotten footage of the stranger who had attacked her.

Terri had been taken in an ambulance to the emergency room. They were confident they could save her life but doubted they could reattach what remained of her arm.

Anne sat in the back of an ambulance in shock.

"Anne!" Anne's mom and father called out as they arrived at the museum.

"Mom!"

They rushed to pass the police and hugged her.

"Let's go home," Anne asked, on the verge of tears.

A few news people were taking pictures of this small reunion. A few of the police did their best to block them to let them have some measure of privacy. Unfortunately, some people who had filmed the attack on their phones began to post it online. Already people had seen Anne getting attacked, and reporters there were trying to question her.

One person there wasn't all that interested in questioning Anne. He wore a tan trench coat and tugged on his gloves. He always wore gloves to help hide that he had six-fingered hands.

His name, Dr. Ford Pines, carried some weight as a respected newsman in LA. Ford had started as a researcher, but his attempt to discover the supernatural in a town in Oregan had met with failure and damaged his reputation. The only good thing that came out of it was that he ended up getting a cabin that he eventually handed over to his brother. His brother needed it more than he had, plus it sounded like his brother had turned it into a tourist trap and invited their niece and nephew for summer. Still, Ford wanted something out of his life. He had a falling out with his partner Mcgucket. Mcgucket started a computer business and got in on the industry's first boom. Ford left on his own and took a job at a scientific journal, and he thought this would be a temporary position. It wasn't; he became the go-to guy to disprove false or incorrect entries over time. Then maybe out of his disdain for being unable to prove the supernatural, he became the man to debunk claims of UFOs and magical creatures that they would often get. He usually exposed con people trying to make money from people who were often desperate. Ford didn't find this investigation all that different from the scientific method. It was just finding evidence and putting it together to get a solution. Following that, he started doing a proper investigation for a newspaper that heard about him. He rose amongst the ranks, and with some money from a few patents he had made, he bought the newspaper. People credit his intelligence for saving the newspaper from bankruptcy and making it highly creditable, refusing to allow anything to be published without firm evidence.

That was why he was there. Rumors of a man flying in a wingsuit firing a laser seemed strange or an outright hoax. He had seen the footage, but that could have been easily doctored.

Ford looked at burn patterns on the walls, "Those are plasma burns, blackened quickly before a fire could start. But at the size of the weapon… no, technology isn't available. It's not a huge leap in technology, but it wouldn't be available to regular criminals. Though a suppose an advance flight suit wouldn't either."

Though Ford was about the science game, he still kept a tab on technology and science. For that matter, 90% of news stories dealing with science in the Daily Trumpet were written by him. Ford still felt a need to reveal truths to the people.

He saw the damage and knew something was extraordinary and would require further investigation. He'd figure out the secret behind the one people had dubbed the Heron.

Frakes picked through her lab, trying to salvage what she could. They had computer backups, but it looked like biological research was destroyed during the explosion. It looked like even the animal samples were gone.

"Frakes."

the scientist flinched at the voice.

She turned around to find two figures standing behind her.

Yunan was a tall, slender woman with short blonde hair, and she wore a simple yet stylish black suit. She carried herself with pride and confidence, and anyone who wasn't paying close attention might not realize how dangerous she was.

But in truth, Frakes' attention was drawn to who Yunan was guarding.

Andrias was a tall, dark-skinned man with long gray hair tried in a ponytail and an impressive beard. He wore an expensive black suit, likely more expensive than the whole lab. He had a black opal pin on his label, and he walked in calmly with a warm smile.

"Dr. Frakes, I had to come when I heard what happened. This is horrible."

"Andrias?" Frakes gulped.

"I assure you, my company will be more than happy to pay for your assistance with hospital bills and help repair everything here."

"That's very gracious of you."

"It's the least we can do to help alleviate your struggle during this terrible time." Andrias looked over to his guard, "Yunan, please give us a moment in privacy."

Yunan bowed and left the room to guard the door.

When the doors closed, Andras smiled and dropped, "Frakes, do you have the gem?"

"No, I'm afraid it's not here."

Andrias placed his hand on her shoulder, his hand almost as big as her entire head, "That's unfortunate to hear, now tell me one reason," his grip tightened on her should so hard she thought it would break. "why I shouldn't reconsider our working relationship?"

"Ah! I have two!"

"Go on,"

"Toomes! It was Toomes who attacked! I recognized his voice! I worked with him for years. I wouldn't mistake that voice."

Andrias paused, Toomes had worked with their groups years ago but moved on, and they hadn't had much contact in years. Toomes now had his own company and made a bit of success for himself. Andrias did hear rumors that it might have some financial issues. They had no legal means, and confronting Toomes in other methods would likely be difficult if he was ready.

"And the second reason?"

"I stored energy," Frakes told him, "I've got dozens on containers where I've been storing energy from the gem."

"Hm, fine. I'll be taking half of them back to my labs."

"Half?!"

"I know you wish to work on your projects, but we have a deal, I pay for your lab and let you do your private experiments as long as you continue our efforts. And now that you've lost the gem," he paused, "Well, the only reason I'm being so lenient is that you know our thief, and rumors are that the third gem is already coming to town. So, make sure you are worth all this extra trouble."

Frakes just nodded. She was not going to argue against the secret Kingpin of the city.

Anne sat in her bed, she was safe, but she didn't feel it. Her nerves were on constant edge. All she wanted to do was pull herself under her covers and stay there.

"Anne!" Pushing past the doors was Marcy.

Marcy tumbled as she did but jumped her feet and ran right into Anne, pulling her in a tight hug. "Are you okay? Are you hurt? I'm sorry that you had to go through that? I rushed over the second I heard."

Anne hugged her back. "I-I-m okay."

Marcy pulled back. She didn't exactly believe her but wasn't going to force it out. It's not that Marcy was great with people or emotions. She didn't know how to deal with something like this. The best she could do was try to be there for Anne.

"Anne? Marcy?"

To both girls' surprise, Sasha was wearing a black leather jacket in the doorway.

"Sasha?" Anne muttered, "How? Why?"

Sasha gave them a weary smile, "Anne, the second I found out what happened, I knew I had to check on you."

"You were in another state." Marcy pointed out.

"Yeah, about that, stuff changed with my folks. I'm moving back here. I was going to wait for Monday to be a surprise when you saw me at school. But then everything-"Sasha just looked at her friends and pulled them in a hug.

Anne trembled before letting out a long, loud sob, and the wall broke down, and she started to cry. They just held her and let her.

Anne wasn't okay but knowing that her two best friends were there, that they'd be together again, gave her some sense of safety, that things would be back to normal soon.

0000

The girls stayed with Anne for hours; they started to talk about random things to keep Anne's mind off things. They even stayed for dinner. For a few moments, the world seemed normal again. They talked about everything in school to catch her up to date on everything. Sasha was going to be busy finishing unpacking though she did insist she could be there for them. Marcy said the same thing. If Anne said anything, she'd be there. But Anne insisted she needed sometimes, and she didn't want to bother them. She sent them home, saying she just needed to process everything.

She took a shower and got ready for bed, hoping that she'd be right. She got in her pajamas and made herself ready for bed.

"Meow"

Anne's attention was drawn by her cat Domino inching closer to her backpack.

"Domino?" As Anne moved to her back, she noticed movement. "What's going on?"

She opened the bag to get startled by a pink frog jumping on her suddenly. She grabbed the frog, and the frog spat out a glowing blue gem. Anne stared at the bright little stone still squeezing the little amphibian. In its attempt to free himself, the frog bit her hand. Anne naturally dropped the frog, "Ow!"

She rubbed her hand, trying to ease the pain. She looked over to see the little frog quickly jumping onto the small terrarium in her bag as if trying to protect the two inside it.

"How did that get there?"

Anne paused to look at her hand, a small blue puncture in her hand. "Wait, do frogs even have teeth? It's not one of those poison frogs, is it?"

Anne started to feel dizzy, and her vision became blurry. The world seemed to be pulled from beneath her.

Anne collapsed to the ground. As her vision became blurry, she saw the glowing gem and a small pink frog with a strange spider-like mark on its back.

Authors Note: Am I going through Amphibia withdrawel… yeah probably. I've had a bad day so decided to start something fun. I saw a bunch of art of Anne as a spider hero so I decided to do my own take on the story. I know their is a fanfic but I haven't read it, since I didn't want ot copy anything by accident.

Anyway, so if anyone has any suggestions for Anne's spider costume let me know. Anyway a few notes, yeah Ford Pines is taking up JJJ role in this story because yeah JK Simmons in some form should always play JJJ.

The vulture is the Heron in this world and other amphibian character are going to fill in for spidey baddies.

Anyway let me know what you guys think, leave reviews and all that.
