Chapter 7: An Audience

Opening File: Heimdall

The son of Odin and Nine Mothers (who may represent personified waves) who are Bára (or Drǫfn), Blóðughadda, Bylgja, Dúfa, Hefring, Himinglæva, Hrǫnn, Kólga, and Unnr. The Watchman of the Aesir, bearer of Gjallarhorn and herald of Ragnarök is the Norse God of Foresight, Surveillance, Order and Foreknowledge. A true believer of Odin, Heimdall is believes that the Aesir are superior to all other races and possesses the ability to manipulate Bifrost energy in no ways anyone ever could except for Odin who is the only one who can surpass his abilities.

One of his Bifrost abilities seems to be the power of chronokinesis allowing him to slow down time around himself.

Heimdall can see a person's next moves and intent by locking eyes, even to the point of being able to read another person's mind and thoughts. However, this precognitive capacity is based on the extent of the observed party also being consciously aware of the moves they are about to make, diminishing Heimdall's ability to anticipate them if they were randomly executed and not necessarily planned, meaning that he cannot read his target instinct and follow through erratic and unpredictable attacks. Therefore, he can be struck through pure chance.

Folkvangr

With Jim, Roland, and Douxie off to Asgard with Sir-Barks-A-Lot and the sons of Thor the others quickly got to work on getting to Folkvangr and acquiring what it is that Merlin hid in this afterlife to help them defeat Garmr.

With the help of Freya and her Shield Maidens Sigrun and Eir they were brought to the afterlife. They appeared up above a meadow of flowers that had a few warriors resting within it. The Shield Maidens and Freya each possessed a set of birdlike wings on their backs and the three of them each held one of the Guardians of Arcadia. When they reached the ground and let go of the Guardian they were carrying. Freya made here wings retract and pointed toward a pond that had a rocky outcropping with something carved into it.

"That's where Merlin hid the secret to defeating Garmr." The Vanir queen stated.

"Good, the sooner we solve the riddle and get what he hid the better." Claire said as the group started walking to the location.

While the group made their way to their destination Archie flew and perched himself on Freya's shoulder.

"Excuse me Lady Freya, I'm sorry to ask but are you aware that-" Archie asked before Freya cut him off.

"That the curse I put on Baldur to keep him safe from death was broken." Freya stated rather sternly.

"Sorry for asking." The small dragon said in apology.

"No, you had a right to ask, I'm just worried for his safety." Freya said in apology. "I know he's being kept locked up in Asgard and away from any danger, so Ragnarök won't begin. But my actions have left him sick in his own mind. I just hope he can forgive me one day."

"As do I, my lady." Archie offered in condolence.

When the group came to the pond Archie, Claire, and Steve groaned in annoyance when they saw the stone carving.

"What's wrong?" Toby asked his friends.

"It's Lock and Latch!" Archie said as he pointed at the stone carving. The Carving resembled two giant faces.

"We saw these door dorks when we traveled back in time before." Steve said in annoyance. "They were real buttsnacks."

"Merlin must've moved them hear after the Battle of Killahead." Claire said with a shake of her head as she approached the giant stone carving. "Let's just get this over with."

Sensing her approach the stone carving glowed for a second before the face on the right, Latch, spoke.

"Who dares approach us!"

"You know us knobheads!" Archie said as he perched himself on Claire's shoulder.

The faces look at the group and instantly recognize Archie, Claire, and Steve.

"Oh, it's you three." Lock, the face of the left said. "And I see you've brought the queen of the Vanir as well, good day to you your majesty."

"Thank you, doorkeepers, we need the secret to defeating Garmr that Merlin hid behind you." Freya said to the doorkeepers. "As thus we require entry."

"You'll have to answer our riddle to get in first." Lock stated.

"Merlin didn't want Odin getting this secret your majesty he feared that your ex would misuse it." Latch stated. "So, our apologies."

"Well, we might as well get this over with." Toby said with a sigh of annoyance. "What's the riddle?"

"The riddle is…" Lock said before Latch responded to the group.

"…Why did the dead baby cross the road?"

The group looked at the stone doors in confusion. Even the Shield Maidens looked flabbergasted, and their faces were covered by their helmets.

"What kind of stupid riddle is that?!" Archie asked in annoyance. The riddle made no sense at all and sounded like something a ten-year-old would make up on the spot.

"That's the riddle," Lock said to the group.

"Now answer it if you want entry." Latch stated. "And don't try opening any portals this time shadow witch, Merlin took precautions to prevent that from happening again."

Claire groaned at this before Toby stepped forward to answer the riddle.

"Because the baby was actually a zombie?" Toby answered.

"Incorrect!" Lock said.

"You suck as this riddle." Latch said next.

"That's not even a riddle you idiots it's complete nonsense!" Archie said to the doorkeepers.

"Just open up for us!" Steve demanded from the living stone carvings.

"How about you open up again!" Lock said to the blond.

"Maybe I will!" Steve said back before getting on his knees. "So recently I became a dad to seven and I'm a little worried about how to raise them. Like what if I'm too strict and I turn out like my buttsnack of a dad and get hated by my own kids."

"Well as a wise man once said, 'parenthood, one big ass mystery,'" Latch said to the Guardian of Arcadia.

"Well Steve's completely useless again." Toby said before turning to the group. "Does anyone have any better ideas cause this riddle makes less sense than the ones Gatto tells."

"Gunslingers are exceptionally good at riddles." Archie said. "Their goddess Bessa is actually the inventor of riddles."

"But that means waiting for Roland to get back with Jim and Douxie." Claire said before looking at Steve asking Lock and Latch for fatherhood advice. "I hope they have it easier than us."

Asgard, Hrimthur's Wall, Gladsheim

Jim didn't know what to expect when he was teleported by the Bifrost, he certainly wasn't expecting to appear on top of a large stone wall with the others. Behind the wall was a town of wooden buildings in the style of Norse architecture and on the other side were lushful plains and rivers that surrounded the wall and surrounding the plains were snow-capped mountain ranges. Jim found the whole area almost heavenly.

"Whoa," Jim said with wonder in his eyes at seeing this untouched piece of nature.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Magni said as he planted the top of his sword to the ground.

"Yeah." Jim said in agreement.

"You should take a picture while you can kid." Modi said next. "You'll probably never be back here."

As Jim did this another voice was heard behind the group.

"I don't know why you would be focused on the plains when the splendor of Asgard is right behind you."

The group turned around to see an average man with a rather handsome face, pale skin and blonde braided hair, the most striking thing regarding his appearance are his glowing purple eyes. He had golden teeth and gold on his ears. His clothing seemed rather extravagant as well, consisting of a sumptuous white tunic covering him up to his knees, adorned with high quality leather covering the upper chest and back as well as the shoulders, know doubt honoring his high status and whatever role he may hold. The symmetrical knotwork in this tooled leather seems in keeping with his formal and rigid worldview, he also has some ancient Aesir iconography in parts of the leather.

"Heimdall." Douxie said in a neutral tone as Barks growled at the Aesir.

"I see the wizard apprentice still remembers me or is it, master wizard now?" Heimdall said rather dismissively as Douxie narrowed his eyes at the god. "For those of you who don't know who I am, I am Heimdall, watchman of the Aesir! The Herald of Ragnarok!"

As he said this Jim took notice of the horn at Heimdall's side. Know doubt that it was the mythical horn Gjallahorn, once blown Ragnarok itself is said to begin.

"I see the sons of Thor have brought you all, though it would've been better if it was just the Gunslinger." Heimdall said to the group as he eyed Roland before turning away. "Walk with me, I'll lead you to the great hall."

"So, this is Asgard." Jim said as he looked at the buildings. "I have to admit it's a lot different than what I had expected."

"If you were expecting marble palaces than you were clearly thinking of Mount Olympus not Gladsheim." Heimdall said as he stretched out an arm to gesture to the buildings. "Real power, you see, does not need to be flaunted. It emerges when the time is right. Don't you agree?"

Heimdall had turned his gaze towards Roland, fully knowing what sort of power the Gunslinger now possesses.

"I hate agreeing with people who are as arrogant as you." Roland simply stated to the watchmen of the Aesir causing some snorts from Magni and Modi which quickly earned the siblings a glare from their uncle.

"Still its kind of impressive that we get to be among the Aesir gods." Jim said as Barks walked beside him.

"Aesir gods? Not all Aesir are gods' young mortal." Heimdall stated. "The same is true for the Vanir and there are a few Jotunn who are gods themselves. How do you think Loki is a god when he wasn't an Aesir like me?"

"Nice to know your still the same after all these centuries Heimdall." Douxie stated dryly.

Soon the group came to a building on the other end of the town and noticed that it was built on the edge of a cliff.

"This building, mortals, is the Great Hall." Heimdall said to the group. "It is here that the Aesir and Aesir gods come to relax, dine, and talk."

"Nice to make it." Jim said as he took a step forward before Heimdall placed a hand on his shoulder.

"As the watchman of the Aesir it is my duty to eliminate any and all threats." Heimdall said before he threw the Trollhunter forward into the area between the Great Hall and the town. "And a mortal wielding a god killer weapon is the biggest one here."

"Hey!" Douxie said as he, Barks, Magni and Modi tried to stop the fight before Roland stepped in front of them. "Roland?"

"This is Jim's fight, any advice you can offer him should be said now." Roland said as Heimdall entered the makeshift arena, Aesir began to gather around to watch the fight.

"Alright then." Douxie said as he and the others reluctantly stood down.

"For the good of all, Daylight is mine to command!" Jim said with the Amulet of Daylight forming his silver suit of knight armor and then summoning Excalibur to his right hand.

"Jim! Heimdall can predict a person's next moves by locking eyes with them!" Douxie called out. "However, this precognitive capacity is based on the extent of the observed party also being consciously aware of the moves they are about to make, if your erratic he can't predict your moves."

"Or if he can't see my eyes." Jim said with a smirk.

"Oh please, I can tell that you intend on…oh crap." Heimdall said as he realized what Jim was about to do.

Suddenly a blue light appeared around Jim's head causing a familiar horned helmet to form around it, one that completely covered his face, though somehow allowing the wearer to look out from it.

"I thought that helmet required the Eye of Gunmar." Roland said to Douxie. "It's to my understanding that when the original Amulet was destroyed so were the Triumbric Stones?"

"They were but when the others got the old Amulet's remains, they went back to the old Trollmarket to find the fragments that came off the Triumbric Stones when Jim cleaved them to become weapons." Douxie explained as Jim and Heimdall circled each other. "They then merged those pieces with the piece of Heartstone they got from Akiridion-5 to power the new Amulet. This also had the benefitted side effect of giving Jim back his Triumbric weapons without having to add the specific stones into any of the slots."

"And Jim already has the slots filled with different stones." Roland said with realization dawning on him.

"Specifically, vivianite, amethyst, fire opal, wulfenite, peacock coal, obsidian, and one special surprise." Douxie said with a smirk as Heimdall drew his sword Hofund.

"This should be an interesting fight if Heimdall has to fight without his precognitive abilities." Magni said with a grin.

"Fifty gold says Jim lobs off Heimdall's arm." Modi says.

The two opponents stopped at opposite parts of the area and began to stare each other down. With a yell Jim began to charge forward but Heimdall smirked and started moving at superhuman speeds almost like he was teleporting. Jim slid to a stop and began summoning his shield just as Heimdall was close and slashed his sword at the human. Hofund makes its strike on the now summoned shield. Both shield and sword are locked though Jim slashes Excalibur at the god of foresight.

But because of the sword's massive size Heimdall was quick to use speed to put some distance from him and the Trollhutner. Heimdall held out his hand and from it came five orbs of purple energy. The god smirks at Jim and launches the orbs of Bifrost energy at him. Jim runs forward making use of his agility and reflexes to dodge the orbs whether it be by side stepping, ducking, or vaulting over them. Once he is within Heimdall's reach he slashes his sword at the god but…

…everything seems to slow down. Everything around the cocky Aesir god slows down to a crawl and he walks out of Excalibur's way and to Jim's left side.

"This fight was cute and all, but it's time to die like the rest of your predecessors." Heimdall said as he raised Hofund.

If the god of foresight looked closer, he would have seen a green glow coming from the Amulet of Daylight. The light then encompassed Jim allowing him to move again. Heimdall was caught off guard allowing Jim to bash the god in the face with his shield. Heimdall is disoriented and the time stop is undone. Roland and the Aesir are surprised to see the changes in the outcome.

"What just happened?!"

"Did he just match Heimdall's time stop?!"

"That human fights like an Aesir!"

"HOW?!" Heimdall shouted. No one had ever countered his use of the Bifrost to slow time before.

"Look me in the eyes and you can tell." Jim said as the face plate of his helmet parted allowing Heimdall to see Jim's narrowed eyes.

"I see now." Heimdall said as Jim's mask closed again. "So, the Azure Guardian of Time and Space had you insert the Time Stone into the Amulet."

"He even merged the Excalibur jewel I used to connect the Amulet with the sword, said I'd need every advantage I could get." Jim explained as Excalibur began to glow with light magic. "Most of your tricks won't work anymore so just surrender."

"Never." Heimdall said defiantly.

The two opponents stared at each other, but before they could attack each other again a voice called out.

"What is going on out here?!" The voice shouted.

Everyone in attendance turned to see an old man exiting the Great Hall. He wore an elegant light blue tunic made of the finest Asgardian wool, woad-dyed to bring out his eye, that reaches to below the knee, adorned with golden embroidery. He wore eight golden rings; an excessive amount of rope was worn at his waste. Over his right eye, he wore an eyepatch made of brown leather, adorned with a silver button behind his ear. On his right side he has an object carved from reindeer antler—probably containing a magical reagent. Finally, the old man paired this outfit with walnut brown leather boots.

"Looks like the fun's over." Modi says.

"Is that Odin?" Douxie asked. "He looks different."

"We haven't seen you in centuries Hisirdoux a lot can change." Magni explained.

"All-Father I can explain." Heimdall says as he points at Jim. "This boy wields a weapon that can kill gods, I was merely removing a threat."

"I said do not antagonize our guests!" Odin says to his son. "You've done the complete opposite of what I had asked!"

Jim merely stared at this as he lowered his sword, and the others approached them. Barks rubbed himself against Jim's left leg with the Trollhutner petting the adolescent wolf's head in response.

"Go help Gna train the Einherjar for Ragnarok she sent her lieutenants Hrist and Mist to help Hodur look for those idiots who broke Baldur's curse." Odin ordered the god of foresight.

"Helping the Valkyrie queen train warriors who get sent back to Valhalla upon death, this is no job for me." Heimdall muttered under his breath as he walked away.

Odin sighs before turning his attention to the group. "Sorry about that he gets carried away sometimes he gets carried away."

"I can tell." Jim says as he removes his amulet causing his armor to disappear.

"Been awhile Odin." Douxie says. "Forgot to take your golden apple?"

"I've been busy trying to keep Ragnarok from happening wizard." Odin says before turning his attention to Magni and Modi. "Good job not screwing this job up boys, go do-whatever it is you do when I'm not dealing with you."

The sons of Thor merely groan at backhanded compliment and head into the Great Hall.

"I was finishing up a report go relax in the Great Hall while I finish it." Odin says as he leads the group into the Great Hall. "I'll send Brunnhilde for you once I'm done."

As the group entered the dining hall, they saw that it was a simple place like something you'd see in the dining area of a rather big log cabin. All around Aesir could be seen eating, drinking, and conversing with each other. They could even make out some of the conversations being spoken by the Aesir they passed by.

"Think Odin will ever find those humans that broke Baldur's curse?"

"Unlikely."

"Odin's replaced the army with only Einherjar. We should run to Vanaheim while we still can! He's becoming more and more crazy."

"Shh! What if his ravens are watching."

"Nanna and Forseti came back from their talk with Baldur today."

"And what did the wife and son of the formerly cursed prisoner discover about him?"

"Only that he's enjoying being able to feel again. He's eating a lot and cutting himself."

"Buri almighty."

"Douxie?"

"Thrud." Douxie said as him and the group turned to see a teenage girl approach them.

She appeared to be between the ages of 14-16, had a brawny build and tall stature. She has pale skin, blue eyes, freckles, and shoulder-length ginger hair, with a more vibrant streak of red in a tuft across the right side of her head. The back of her hair is joined in an elaborate lattice braid, held together with burnished, bronze hair cuffs and hemp-rope strings. Upon her face are various visible scars, which streak across her skin akin to slash wounds. These scars are more prominent on the left side of her face, with only a few being seen on her right forehead.

Elegant Urnes-styled tattoos can be found inked across Thrúd's arms, shoulders, and hands in a vibrant blue, ending just before reaching her shoulder-blades yet finding subtle continuity in the design along her golden breastplate. Most visible regarding her outfit is the shaggy brown pelt Thrúd wears along her waist, hanging over most of her attire and creating a window down the center where her dark brown trousers are hardly visible underneath her brown fur-covered boots. Golden, decorative tasset plates and rings hang at both ends of her fur pelt to compliment her breastplate, while various soapstone medallions hang from the center of the chestnut-brown tasset guards at her waist and hips. This leather piece also aids in carrying Thrúd's weapons, which both hang from a embellished leather strap and dual-sheath from behind her. The fur lining Thrúd's boots is fastened with rope, while multiple small cuts of brown hemp-rope can be seen acting as accessories along her forearms.

On her back was a machete and a mace. The machete is the more decorated of the two, the silver blade adorned with golden firegilded knotwork while the pommel and guard are enriched with similar swirl-patterns on shiny steel. The handle itself is a light tan wood. Thrúd's mace isn't as elaborate as the former weapon, made up of a sturdy silver steel affixed to light brown wood, its handle wrapped in green fabric. Swirl-pattern knotwork is still present in this weapon as well, though it isn't as prominent as the machete.

"It is you." Thrud said as she hugged Douxie.

"Good to see you too." Douxie said with a smile as the Aesir broke away from the hug. "Guys this is Thrud daughter of Thor and Sif, goddess of strength, beauty, willows, storms, and a whole lot of other stuff that take too long to name."

Thrud snorted at that last part. "Way to introduce me to your friends you old wizard."

"You've met each other before?" Jim asked as Barks approached the Aesir and started sniffing her. "I'm going to guess it was centuries ago, but you look like a teenager."

"Aesir have different lifespans to humans." Thrud said as she bent down and petted Barks head. "Not to mention I am part Jotunn from my dad's side."

"Thrud don't run off." Said a woman in blue who approached the group.

"Mom." Thrud groaned.

"Lady Sif." Douxie said in surprise.

Sif had long beautiful golden hair, the width of which extends to her knees even while in elegant, varied braids. This interlaced hairstyle always hangs over Sif's left shoulder, held together and carefully adorned by golden cuffs and jewelry. Most notable of these accessories is an ornate golden hairpiece that dangles at the end of her hair, as well as an intricate golden headband seen reaching up to her hairline on both sides of her head. A long, much-thinner braid hangs over the right side of Sif's body, reaching down to her thighs while being woven securely with gold and blue hemp-fabric. Sif has blue eyes, as seen with most Aesir, fair skin and a sparse amount of beauty marks dotted along her face. Elaborate swirl-style tattoos can be found inked in a soft blue along her right arm, above her right collarbone and on the front end of her neck.

Unlike the typical wear of most Nordic women, Sif can be found sporting a vibrant blue Viking serk without any sort of overdress, uniquely strapless to allow arm and collarbone visibility. The upper hem of this serk has golden knot-stitching sewn along the top, fixed shut in the back by two small button clips. A centerpiece of blue fabric hangs between the open sides of this dress-like outfit, where more elaborate gold and brown designs are present along the bottom surrounding it and the rest of Sif's serk. The inner edges of this serk also maintain this gold design, reaching upwards and ending at her brown-leather waist belt. This belt acts as a sort of corset around the Goddesses' form, held together in the back by two gold-embellished buckle-straps. Sif's pants are a greyish-black unwrinkled fabric with minimal design, the only notable element present being the golden leg-band worn underneath her left knee. Aside from this, Sif's boots reach just below the knees and consist of dark brown and black leathers, both incorporating the use of straps around the ankles.

"Lady Sif." Douxie greeted with a bow of his head causing Roland and Jim to do so as well. "It's been a while since we last met."

"Indeed Hisirdoux, and I am sorry for the loss of Merlin." Sif said, offering her condolences before turning to Roland and Jim. "And this must be the champion of Gan and Trollhunter. It is an honor to meet you both."

"The honor is ours Lady Sif." Roland said to the goddess.

"I kind of met the guy who took up your deceased husband's hammer Lady Sif." Jim said. "Have you-"

"Met Johnny Bravo." Sif said with a groan causing Thrud to shift a little. "I saw him when he was brought to Asgard to be tested after he picked up Mjolnir and let's just say I'm not too happy with Thor's reincarnation being a bigger doofus than when I first met him."

"Midgardians." A voice said from behind the group causing everyone to turn to see a woman in golden armor addressing the humans. "Odin is ready to talk to you."

"Thank you Brunnhilde." Douxie said already knowing the Valkyrie.

As the humans and wolf followed her Roland glanced back to see Sif and Thrud walking away. He returned his focus to the others and walked with them.

"I understand that you saw Queen Freya in Vanaheim." Brunnhilde said to the group.

"We did." Douxie answered. "I take it you and the other Valkyries miss having her as your queen?"

"All but Hrist, Mist, and the new Valkyrie Queen Gna." Brunnhilde answered. "We miss her and the others who joined her Shield Maidens. Rossweise especially misses her grandmother Gondul, though Rossweise is busy keeping an eye on the new Thor."

"I've met her during the Crom crisis." Jim said.

"It makes me sick to know that Gna, a Vanir goddess and Freya's former messenger, would turn her back on her home and queen." Douxie said.

"Believe me aside from Hrist and Mist the rest of us aren't happy with her but we have to tend to the dead in Valhalla." Brunnhilde answered before bringing the group to a door that she opened. "Odin will be waiting for you on the other side."

As the group entered the room, they saw that it was a large underground study filled with books. As the humans and wolf made their way through the room, they found Odin at a desk with two ravens perched on a bookshelf right next to him. He saw the group and rose from his seat and approached them with the two ravens going to him and turning into tattoos on his arms.

"Enjoy the feast hall?"

"We did talk to your daughter-in-law and granddaughter." Jim said to the All-Father.

"Sif's always been on my back." Odin grumbled. "Even more so when Thor was alive."

"Why did you call us here?" Roland asked rather bluntly.

"Ah, straight to the point, I like that." Odin said. "I have called you three because you are the strongest members of your little travel group. The reason why is because of Garmr." Odin paced around the group and picked a book from a shelf that had Garmr on it. "Just as bad as Fenrir if not worse. A soulless monster with an insatiable appetite and capable of making tears between the realms. And unlike the Grimm from Earth Garmr cannot be killed, which is why we had to chain him up."

"But he escaped." Douxie said earning a glare from Odin.

"I commissioned Dwarves to make an unbreakable chain from impossible concepts." Odin explained. "Such as a cat's footfall and bird spittle the only way it could've been broken was by something very powerful. Now you may not trust me, but you must remember that we are on the same side. I helped make the sword used by that old emperor and taught him how to use Aura which he passed on to future generations. And in case you haven't noticed Ragnarök is back on course and with Baldur's curse broken it may happen sooner than later."

"I'm sure you wanted him to still have it." Roland dryly.

"Don't give me a lecture on fatherhood." Odin said. "You Gunslingers have rather brutal training methods and you're not exactly winning father of the year with how your son Mordred ended up. Besides it was my ex-wife that cursed him not me." Odin stated with Roland glaring daggers at the Aesir god. "But back on to the topic, Garmr is an Aesir problem and should be handled by us. I can send Heimdall and some of our best Einherjar to deal with that monster once the Dwarves I've hired finish building the new chain."

"But what's to stop this from happening again?" Jim spoke up. "Let us deal with him, we've faced impossible odds before. Roland slew the Fallen Walter Padick, Douxie defeated Morgana in a one-on-one fight, and I've killed Gunmar and Belroc the leader of the Arcane Order. Give us a week and we'll have Garmr defeated permanently."

Odin stared at Jim for a bit while Douxie and Roland just looked at the two. The master wizard and Gunslinger knew that Jim was right that they could deal with the monster permanently thanks to whatever secret Merlin hid on Folkvangr but reasoning with Odin was a big gamble.

"One week is all you get." Odin stated. "I'm sure you can see yourselves out of Asgard."

"Thank you All-Father." Douxie said as the group headed for the door back to the Great Hall as Barks just growled at the god.

"Oh, and Jim." Odin said to the Trollhunter. "The Arcane Order may have been able to challenge me in the past but the full might of Asgard would've killed those bastard children of Coconteppi if the Spiral hadn't convinced me not to. Those three turning on their own father still changes nothing to me."

"Noted." Jim said to the All-Father before turning to Douxie as they passed through the door. "Who's Coconteppi?"
