A/N: Hey guys! Back with another full-chaptered book finally! Hope you like it!
"Hey Princess."
She tries to hold back an audible groan while pointedly ignoring what has become the bane of her existence, Percy Jackson.
"What do you want, Jackson?" Thalia retorts, rolling her eyes.
Out of the corner of her eye, she catches his grin. "What?" he continues. "The princess can't answer for herself?"
"Do you need something?" she huffs, turning towards him with her arms crossed. (One of these days, ignoring him will work.)
"She speaks!"
"Percy!" She's so fed-up with this.
He raises an eyebrow. "Oooh, spicy. I didn't know you wanted me like that!"
One of these days, she's going to give in to the impulsive thought and strangle him.
"In your dreams, Jackson," she retorts, happy to see him frown at the answer.
"Do you have the math notes?" he asks, finally getting to the point.
"Why would I give them to you?"
Percy smiles. "You know, you're pretty feisty for a quiet girl."
She does not care to explain to Percy that she's not that quiet, he's just obnoxious. Plus, he never misses an opportunity to provoke her.
"Because I asked the teacher and she said to ask you," he continues after she doesn't say anything.
"Impossible!" There's no way Mrs. Clark would do her dirty like that…right?
Percy shrugs. "Ask her yourself. Why would I make this up?" He leans closer to her, causing her to lean back.
"I don't enjoy talking to you either," he whispers.
She rolls her eyes. His story isn't entirely plausible, but retorting would just continue this already unwanted conversation, so she gives in.
"Fine, I'll send you pictures."
"Today would be nice."
"Then I'll send them tomorrow."
Percy rolls his eyes but, thankfully, starts to walk away. "You better not be the reason I fail math!" he calls.
"Oh please, you're the reason you're failing math!" she shouts back.
And that's on getting the last word.
Thalia, who's had to suffer through this conversation on the side, looks approvingly at her. "I'm proud of you."
Annabeth smiles. She might not be the most sociable person ever, but she can hold her own. Well, with Percy Jackson she has to, so she's getting better with it.
Which is good, because the world likes to test her patience with him by not only putting him in her math class, but in adjacent classrooms for at least three other subjects, which means she has to see him throughout the day.
And when she walks into the homecoming committee after school, the world decides to test her patience even more.
Being a senior (and one of Mr. Brunner's favorites) she runs the homecoming committee. She used to be in a few other after school activities, but this year she decided to go all in an as the committee president. Needless to say, it's her favorite club, it's nice and peac—
A knock on the door interrupts them before they can even properly begin, and she turns to see Mr. D standing at the door.
What is the principal doing here?
"Alright," he begins in a somewhat bored voice when all eyes land on him. "In an effort to modify our punishment system, I have a new member for your committee."
When Percy Jackson appears in view, she has to bite her cheek from saying something. Of course he would find a way to infiltrate her one source of—
"You have to help them," Mr. D instructs, waving a hand over the classroom, before turning around and walking away.
"Right," Mr. Brunner says, the only person who seems unperturbed by the turn of events. "Percy, please take a seat."
Percy's eyes scan the room, she waits for them to reach her. His reaction upon finding her is immediate, he smirks for a second before slumping into the nearest seat.
Mr. Brunner turns to the rest of them. There aren't too many people—Rachel, Will, Nico and the Stoll twins, who (along with her) are the only seniors in the group.
"Alright everyone," Mr. Brunner starts. "It's good to have another pair of hands, as you know the pep rally is approaching in two months, so we need to get started." He turns towards her with a smile.
"Annabeth, since you're organizing all this and you still need another MC, I'm assigning Percy to help you."
Both her and Percy turn to the teacher in surprise. (Maybe the only time she's agreed with Percy Jackson on anything.) She wants to protest, but she's a leader and speaking against Mr. Brunner doesn't sit right with her either. Glancing at Percy reveals he's also about to say something, but then shuts his mouth as he catches her glare.
"Okay," she agrees, trying not to sound like she had to force out the word. She stands up to address the room.
"We need three other activities beyond the cheerleading performance. Any ideas?"
Luckily, Percy stays quiet during the meeting, letting her focus and organize everyone else's thoughts and ideas.
By the end of it, they have a pretty good rally (if she does say so herself) planned out and everyone breaks into their respective groups.
The Stolls, as usual, will be in charge of audio and musical chairs, while Will, Nico, and Rachel collaborate on decorations and hoco court announcements.
Annabeth is still gathering her notes when Mr. Brunner, followed by Percy, approaches her.
"It makes sense for both of you to be MC's since you're both seniors," he starts. "And Percy can help with the script, sound good guys?"
It doesn't, but she tries not to let that show and match his smile. "Yeah, we'll figure it out, Mr. Brunner."
She does not want Percy to play a role in any of this and says as much to him as soon as Mr. Brunner walks away.
Percy rolls his eyes. "And what? You think I do? I was fine with a normal detention, and now I'm stuck here."
"You are, so you better go along with this because I won't let you ruin this."
Percy frowns. "You're such a suck up."
She glares at him, choosing to ignore the hurtful comment. (Why can't he just leave her alone?) "You're not messing this up for me."
Percy leans back. "Whatever, what are we supposed to do?"
"Come up with a script."
"Right now?"
She shoots him a look. "No Percy, next year."
He grins. "Oh, good."
Before she can retort, his eyes slide across the room. "How come he didn't pair me with Rachel, now that…" he nods over at her, "would have been great."
"Don't you have a girlfriend?"
Percy raises an eyebrow. "Who? Amy? That's over."
Reason 76 she hates Percy Jackson, he is clearly a player.
"Leave Rachel alone," she whispers harshly.
He ignores her, smiling at Rachel who must have noticed their glances and is now looking at them.
She tugs his arm, forcing him to look at her. "No. You're in my club, and I forbid you from dating anyone here or I will go to Mr. D and makes sure you get a harsher punishment."
Percy scowls. "Fine, geez, relax."
It's going to be a long two months.
"We'll meet up tomorrow to work on this, I can't deal with you right now," she says, massaging her temples.
"I'm busy tomorrow."
"Now you're not." She gets up, slinging her bag over her shoulder.
"You know some of us actually have a life, princess."
She turns around angrily. "Well, now you don't."
She storms out. How Percy always finds her weak points to pick on, she doesn't know. What she does know is that she hates him.
-.-
"I hate him," she complains to Piper the following day as they stand by Piper's locker. Her friend's sympathetic look is cut off as Annabeth is almost knocked over by someone running by.
"Shit!" is all she hears as they roll to a stop. "Sor—"
His words cut off as she turns to face none other than Percy freaking Jackson who is, undoubtedly, running away from some type of trouble.
He takes a second to smirk at her before very purposefully turning to Piper.
"Hey."
Piper just rolls her eyes and Annabeth can't stop herself from sighing. "Will you just go."
Immediately his gaze is back on her. "Jealous?"
"No!" Somehow, he's become more infuriating in the span of 24 hours.
"Where is he?" a shout from the other end of the hallway makes all three of them turn. Percy quickly pulls his hood back up.
"That's my cue, see ya later princess!" He actually winks at her.
But before she can retort, he's already turned the corner and disappeared. Annabeth turns back to Piper.
"I prove my point."
Piper nods slowly, still looking down the hall where Percy had rushed off to. "Interesting."
"What is?"
Piper shakes her head. "Nothing." She turns back to Annabeth. "I'm sorry you have to deal with him….at least it's only two months of after school time though, right? It's over after homecoming?"
Annabeth nods. Piper is right, she just needs to deal with this for two more months.
And that's what she repeats to herself later that day as she's waiting outside the library for Percy to show up. Loud laughter breaks the relative silence of the after-school halls and she looks up from her phone to see him waving to some people.
"Oh look," he says once he sees her. "Where are your friends, princess? Oh wait…" he pauses to pretend to think. "You don't have any."
She glares at him. "You literally tried to flirt with one this morning!"
Percy grins. "Correction, where are your hotter friends?"
It's like a slap to the face and entirely uncalled for. She whips away from him and enters the library, trying to blink back tears. (She refuses to give him the satisfaction of seeing her cry).
She knows it's stupid and it's something she'd usually brush off, but she's had a tough day and it's just too much on top of everything else.
Without seeing if he's following her, she beelines towards the back of the library to a table she hopes is open. She needs to get work done and Percy Jackson can go to hell.
Collecting herself, she sits down at the table and pulls out a notebook. She doesn't know why she thought getting Percy involved would ever work out.
And given that she doesn't think he did follow her, she's better off by herself anyway.
Just as she puts pen to paper though, a voice makes her jump. "What are you writing, princess?"
She glares at Percy who has, somehow, managed to find her. "The script, which I've decided that I don't need your help on anyway, so just leave."
"You cancelled my plans!" he replies.
"Go make them again, I'll just do this myself."
"Oh no…" Percy's eyes narrow as he sits across the table from her. "Hell no, you're going to tell everyone I didn't do anything, and I'll get in even more trouble."
She just stares at him for a second, what kind of asinine thinking is that?
"No, I won't."
Percy shakes his head. "I don't trust you, and I don't want double detention. I have things I want to do with my life."
She can't believe it. How is he not taking the opportunity to leave?
"Fine!" She gives up on trying to understand him. "Any ideas?" She poses the pen to the paper again.
He gives her a blank look. "I've never done this before, how would I know?"
"You've attended a pep rally haven't you?" She shoots him a pointed look.
He teeters his chair back (annoyingly, she might add). "I don't really remember paying attention…"
Of course. She sighs, this is going to be impossible.
"Well let's just start with a welcome to the Goode—"
"That's dumb," he cuts her off, "we're already here."
"To the pep rally Jackson." She can't believe the guy in front of her right now. "And we'll introduce the cheer team."
"Now them I remember," he adds with a grin.
She might pull her hair out. It's honestly a miracle they get through even a few lines. But about twenty minutes later she can't stand it anymore.
"I'll work on this over the weekend," she tells him, closing her notebook.
"You really need to get a life, princess."
"Stop calling me that!" she snaps after yet another jab about her life.
Percy grins. "What? Princess? Nah, I think I'll continue."
"Why are you like this?" she shoots back.
"You're so boring, I gotta make some entertainment," he replies lazily.
Anger boils inside her, followed quickly by a hurt she refuses to show him. "I can't stand you."
And with that, she leaves.
-.-
She wants to say that Percy's words don't get to her, but they do. And she hates that even more. Telling Thalia and Piper is difficult ('cause she really doesn't want to say it) but their explosive reactions do make her feel better.
"That's complete BULLSHIT!" Thalia shouts when she finally tells them.
"It is!" Piper agrees. "Don't listen to him."
Annabeth sighs, leaning back against Piper's bed. "I know, it just sucks…He's such a douchebag, mean and rude for no reason, flirting and dating girls only to break up with them and he tells me that I'm…"
She trails off, not finishing her sentence.
"He's a good-for-nothing player," Thalia sums up.
"Yes, exactly," she agrees, reaching towards the bowl of chips.
Piper, however, is silent, clearly thinking something by the way her eyes are focused on a spot by her dresser. Thalia grabs the bowl of chips from her.
"What?" Annabeth asks Piper, giving up the chips.
"I…" Piper starts slowly. "I have a way to get back at him." She looks at them. "But…it's complicated."
Given that Annabeth really hasn't been able to properly get back at him, she's willing to hear anything out.
"Tell me."
Piper brings her fingertips together like some evil mastermind (which isn't that far off, really). "Basically, you beat him at his own game."
"What do you mean?"
Even Thalia stops munching to focus on Piper.
"What if you played him?" Piper continues. "Like, you pretend to like him, date him, and make him think that he got you like he got those other girls. But then you dump him instead."
That's…well, she's not sure what to make of that plan.
"Wait, but that means Annabeth would have to date him," Thalia points out.
Piper shrugs, reaching for the bowl. "Well yeah, you'd have to make him think he's won you over or whatever. I know it's a hard thing to do but…"
"No way, there's no way he would believe that," Thalia says. "Plus, it means Annabeth would have to get even closer to him."
Those are the exact concerns running through her mind.
Piper shrugs again. "Listen, you don't have to do it. I'm just saying the only way to really get back at him is to give him a taste of his own medicine."
And that is an unfortunate truth.
It's what drives the final nail home for Annabeth. Someone needs to put Percy in his place.
Someone needs to play the player.
Why not her? After everything he's been pulling lately, it should be her.
She nods. "I'm in."
Thalia shakes her head and Piper smiles.
Let the game begin.
A/N: And thus starts my new book! I'll be honest, I haven't finished completely re-writing this book yet. But since I've been struggling with the motivation to do so I've decided to deviate from my norm of having everything completed beforehand and just start posting this story anyway.
So we're both jumping into this together lol I hope you guys like this good old enemies to lovers high-school au!
I'd love to hear your thoughts! Please leave a review!
