She walks into school on Monday with her new mission in mind. As expected, Percy appears at her locker first thing in the morning.
"You never sent the math notes," are the first words out of this mouth.
Wordlessly, she pulls out the copies she made and hands them to him. The shock on his face almost makes the hassle of making the copies worth it. It's rare she catches Percy off his guard and now that she knows how great it feels, she's determined to do it again.
"What happened to you?" He asks, scanning the papers as if to confirm she actually did give him the notes.
She just shrugs, trying to act casual. "Nothing, just keeping my word."
It might be a light jab at the fact that he barely helped with the script and if he wants to take it that way, then that's completely fine with her.
Percy's eyes narrow at her words. "What's your deal princess?"
Boys are entirely too easy to provoke. "It's called being nice," she replies, shutting her locker. "You should try it sometime."
Percy makes a face (another win for her) and sighs. "Whatever."
The bell rings, saving her from further conversation and she walks away with a small smile on her face.
She might actually be able to pull this off.
-.-
The fact that Percy actually shows up to the library later that day is also surprising. Sure, she told him to meet her and sure he'd nodded disinterestedly, but she hadn't actually expected him to show up.
It must show on her face because he rolls his eyes when he sees her.
"Don't look at me like that."
"I'm not looking at you like anything," she replies as innocently as she can. Might as well take the opportunity to get on his nerves.
He slumps down on the opposite chair and crosses his arms. "Whatever, let's just get this over with."
Now that's a sentiment she can agree with. Pulling out her notebook, she flips it to where they had been working on the script. It's evident she'd made zero progress over the weekend. (To be fair, discussing Piper's plan took up most of her time).
Percy, of course, notices. "Looks like you didn't get far without me."
"It's 'cause I have a life, Jackson," she snips back at him.
He leans back in his usual cocky manner and raises and eyebrow. "Really? Could've fooled me."
"Jackson!" a voice across the library shouts, eliciting an angry "shhhh" from the librarian. She glances past him to see one of Percy's friends, Jason, walk up to their table.
Jason is the reason she came into contact with Percy Jackson in the first place, being Thalia's brother and Percy's friend means it was only a matter of time they'd run into each other anyway.
It's been a small encounter (Thalia didn't really talk to her brother in school that often). Jason, along with Leo and Percy, had walked up to Thalia's locker where she and Piper had been standing simply because he needed a textbook that Thalia had.
All Thalia had done was hand him the textbook and he thanked her. But in that amount of time Percy had already managed to shoot an annoying grin her way.
"Who's the princess?" He'd said in the snarkiest tone ever, nodding in her direction. It had been so rude and caught her so off guard that she hadn't been able to respond right away, which then led him to comment on how quiet she was.
And that's when she decided she hated him and that's when he decided to keep making life miserable for her.
"What's up?" Percy says to Jason who's made it to their table, breaking her out of her thoughts.
"Party at my place tomorrow night, you in?"
"On a Tuesday?" she can't help but say it. Thalia had mentioned that Jason might throw some party since their parents were out of town, but she didn't realize it was tomorrow.
Both guys turn to her and she feels her cheeks heat up at the unwanted attention.
"It's called having a life, princess," Percy retorts, throwing her own words back at her.
"You're welcome to come too," Jason adds, nodding at her. "Feel free to bring friends."
"Didn't you hear her, Jason?" Percy cuts in mockingly. "She can't, it's a school night."
"I'll be there," she tells Jason before she can properly think about the words. Anything to wipe that annoying smirk off Percy's face.
Plus, she's capable of going to a party on a school night. She's capable of a lot more than Percy would ever believe. (Plus, Thalia and Piper will be there.)
Once Jason leaves, Percy turns to her with a raised eyebrow. "Are you sure you can handle it?" He lowers his tone in a fake whisper. "You know they'll be drinks there, right?"
The condescension and mockery are enough to finalize her decision. "I'm aware. I'll see you there."
"Bet."
They don't make any progress on the script.
-.-
The house is pretty crowded when she and Piper pull up. She's only been to Thalia's house a few times since they normally gathered at Piper's, and there's so many people it feels even more unfamiliar. She wonders if one-upping Percy is worth it when a guy bursts through the front door mumbling something incoherent.
"Let's go," Piper says, pulling her further inside. Her nerves begin to grip her as they walk further and she wonders what the hell she's doing here. She even dressed up a little (well, it's only jeans and a nice off-the-shoulder blouse, but still).
She scans for Thalia in the crowd, trying to get a glimpse of blue and black hair, but what she actually finds are sea-green eyes.
"You actually came." She knows he's shocked when he doesn't add a princess to the end of the sentence. The nerves disappear, this is definitely worth it.
As casually as she can, she shrugs. His eyes seem to follow the movement. "I told you I would."
"Alright," he nods towards the kitchen. "Let's see what you're made of." She follows him, pulling Piper along, because even though she hates Percy Jackson at least he's a familiar face.
It ends up being a good decision anyway because Thalia is actually in the kitchen sipping something out of a red solo cup.
"You want some punch?" Percy asks, nodding to the bowl. "It's spiked though so…" he leaves it there.
"Wow Jackson, peer pressuring me to drink? Real cool of you," she responds sarcastically.
His face hardens and it's the most serious she's ever seen him. "I asked if you wanted some, I didn't tell you to drink. That's your choice."
It's a weird response to a teasing remark that she hadn't even meant but clearly she has hit some nerve.
"Good to know," she says, unsure of how else to respond. "I'll take some."
It's a bad idea, probably, but she can't bring herself to care. Not when Percy's eyebrows are almost hidden by his hair with how far he's raised them.
She's never drank before and the punch tastes normal for the first second until she's hit with something bitter and unpleasant that she thinks must be the alcohol. Still, she finishes her cup as quickly as she can to get it over with.
Thalia, who'd been watching this whole exchange, takes the empty cup from her.
"No more for you."
"But I feel fine," she tells her. Thalia shakes her head. "You feel fine now, but let's not push it."
She decides to take Thalia's word on it. Percy. Who'd disappeared after watching her finish most of her drink, reappears with Jason just as Thalia throws away her cup.
"Let's goo!" Jason yells, clearly already tipsy, as he pours him and Percy a drink.
Percy turns to her with a smirk. "Watch this princess."
And then the two guys proceed to chug three entire cups in a competition for who will finish first.
Percy wins.
"Fuck," Jason curses, finishing his drink a few seconds later.
It's the stupidest most boys-will-be-boys thing she's ever seen. Percy grins at her. Rolling her eyes, she decides to get up from the stool she'd been sitting at.
And oh…wow…she hadn't really known she was tipsy until she tries to walk and feels the world spin a little. It only lasts a second but she's suddenly glad Thalia had stopped her at one cup.
Jason is already drunk and Percy doesn't seem any more annoying than normal so she hazards that he's just tipsy.
"Can't believe you actually drank princess," Percy says to her after Jason flops forward on the counter.
Yep, he's definitely tipsy because the usual hint of snark is gone from his tone.
"You wouldn't believe a lot of things about me Jackson," she retorts, taking another step forward and wobbling a little.
Percy smirks, his hand grabs her elbow to stabilize her. "Uh huh."
She's hyper away of where he's still touching her but then Thalia cuts in. "We need to get Jason upstairs."
Annabeth steps back as Percy and Thalia haul Jason away, turning to watch the crowd of people half-dancing in the living room to whatever is blaring.
She could dance.
Maybe. Probably.
Either way, she manages to wade further into the living room and though she doesn't know what she's doing, her body is moving.
A few minutes—she's not sure how long—later, a guy she vaguely recognizes from one of her classes comes up to her. "Wanna dance?"
She doesn't respond right away, looking around for Piper or Thalia but once again her eyes land on Percy Jackson, who's leaning very close to some girl as she talks to him.
The sight makes her roll her eyes.
As if he can feel her eyes on him, he looks up and she quickly turns back to the other dude and finds herself responding. "Sure."
He moves a little closer to her but she's not entirely uncomfortable, so she lets him dance beside her. That is until a hand on her shoulder pulls her back.
"You're drunk, come on."
Percy is frowning at her, and she wants to tell him she isn't drunk. It's just that spite is a great motivator and she's tipsy at best.
For example, she's clear-headed enough to know he's leading her upstairs.
"Jason's room," he nods towards the first door on the left. "Thalia is passed out on the floor by the way."
He opens a door further down the hall. "Come on, you should lay down." He leads her inside what must be a guest bedroom.
"I'm not drunk Percy!" She pulls her arm away from his grip and frowns at him.
He shrugs. "Doesn't matter, you're tipsy, same difference right now."
"I need to go home."
"How? You going to call your parents? Go ahead." He crosses his arms and waits and she looks down. He's got her there, she is so not telling her parents, not when they think she's at Piper's.
"That's what I thought," Percy says.
"Where's Piper?"
"She was sober so she ended up driving some of her drama club members home when Thalia said you should sleep over. Party's over and Leo is kicking people out."
He walks further into the room. "We're both in no state to drive and you should really lay down."
It's Percy like she's never seen him before, so she just quietly follows him inside. It doesn't help her case that she almost trips on her way in and would have fallen if Percy hadn't caught her again.
His hand is warm on her arm, and she avoids thinking about that by glaring up at him. "Don't say anything," she says before he can make a snarky remark. His chuckle is enough of a response, though.
"Get in," he says, stopping at the bed.
Tiredness is catching up to her and the big comfy bed looks even more inviting. She plops down and he pulls the blanket over her.
"You good?"
She nods and he leans over her, grabbing the other pillow and a blanket.
He smells like alcohol and the sea and it confuses her brain even more. "Where are you going?"
"Over there," he replies, laying the blanket on the floor and dropping the pillow on it.
"On the floor?"
It's an obvious answer and he doesn't respond, just lays down. It's not just the alcohol, she's truly shocked.
Percy, being the douchebag player that he is, sleeping on the floor? When there's a whole other side of the bed? She can't believe it.
He hates her, they haven't stopped fighting since they met, and yet he helped her into bed because she's tipsy? Nothing about this situation makes any sense.
Maybe that's why she says what she does.
"There's room on the other side of the bed."
"I'll be fine on the floor," he responds.
"You sure?" Why is she harping on this point?
"I'm used to it at this point." She can hear the eye roll as he says it.
Frowning, she shakes her head. "I'm trying to be considerate."
"Really?" He says in that familiar mocking tone. "How nice of you."
"Fine! Be that way, I don't want you here anyway!"
This feels more like the Percy she knows, this feels more familiar. So she turns over in the bed, away from him and his sleeping form on the ground, and lets the tiredness take over, her mind slipping into darkness.
A/N: Just want to say that I don't condone underage drinking and also that it's been like nine years since I was in high school and even then I never went to a party so just bear with me, we're all here for the tropes anyway, right?
(if you do want to read a hyper-realistic fic, I recommend my fic rooftop stories (this might be my everything) because that is an accurate depiction of post-college grad life)
Anyway, hope you guys liked this, I'd love to hear your thoughts so Please Comment!
