Chapter 35! I hope you guys enjoyed the past 34 chapters, and I especially hope that you will enjoy this one! Sorry about the kind of cliffhanger on the last one. At least it wasn't as bad as the cliffhanger in the Mark of Athena. That was brutal! Anyways, enjoy! Review shoutouts:
Guest: Alright! I will try to write a Percabeth fanfiction after this. Would you like it to be an AU?
Guest: Thank you! I'm so glad this is the best fanfiction you've ever read! That means a lot to me! I will definitely try to update quicker.
iNeptune: Your support is amazing! I sure hope everybody stays, but even if it was just you, I'd still write. Thanks!
Guest: Haha! Yes, I am reading Percy Jackson for homework! You're right, it is hard to have Percabeth and Preyna together, and it's hard to write, though it's coming along! Thank you, and I will try to write Percabeth after this!
Alright, on with the fic! (Disclaimer: All rights to Rick Riordan.)
Reyna's POV
All Reyna wanted was to have a nice relaxing evening, with no worries whatsoever. Her plans were ruined when she learned that Terminus was in New Rome. She ran with the legionnaire down to the city, wondering what she would find.
What she did find was a couple of retired Camp Jupiter legionnaires trying to communicate with the possessed god. From a distance, Reyna couldn't tell if this was going well or not. The bust, however, looked normal enough. He was sitting still, his face calm. Reyna knew not to take this as a good sign, though. Gods were unpredictable, especially gods who chose to appear made out of stone.
Reyna and the legionnaire continued to head for Terminus. He wasn't making any sudden movements, so that was... adequate, at least.
Finally, Reyna and her legionnaire companion reached the veterans. Terminus looked over at Reyna and said, "Praetor."
Reyna nodded slowly, confused. "Yes, Terminus. Now, care to explain why you're acting weird?"
Terminus opened his stone mouth to say something, but suddenly, he convulsed and disappeared. Reyna, the legionnaire, and the adults simply stood there, wondering what had just happened.
"At least he said something," the current legionnaire broke the silence.
Reyna nodded slowly. "And then he just... I don't even know."
"He seemed to disappear against his will," one of the retired legionnaires mentioned.
"As if possessed by an eidolon..." Reyna pointed out.
"I'm convinced now," the current legionnaire said. "Terminus has to have an eidolon!"
Reyna nodded again. It all made too much sense. There was no other option. You'd think that maybe being a god, Terminus would be able to dispel an eidolon, but all the evidence pointed otherwise.
"Well," Reyna turned to the adults. "We'd better head back to camp. Thanks for stalling him a bit."
The veterans nodded respectfully at the praetor. Reyna gestured to the legionnaire and they started heading back towards Camp Jupiter. She knew that the sun was getting lower in the sky, and it was time for dinner at the mess hall right about this time. She was really hungry, and people were probably wondering where she was, especially her fellow praetors.
The two headed up the via praetoria, and Reyna could hear all the demigods gathered in the mess hall. She had to admit that when the whole camp was together, they could be pretty loud.
The two walked in silence until they finally reached the mess hall and went their separate ways. As Reyna suspected, Jason and Percy immediately rushed up to her, calculating her expression. Reyna had to admit that both of the attractive boys' eyes so focused on her made her heart flutter. She knew it didn't mean anything, for they were just wondering what was going on, but it still made her feel flustered. So flustered, she couldn't form any words.
Finally, Percy said, "Well?"
Reyna blinked. "Well, what?"
"Are the rumors true?" Jason asked.
Reyna looked at the little scar on his lip, but answered, "Oh, yes. Terminus was in New Rome."
Percy raised his eyebrows. "And?"
Snap out of it, Reyna! She relayed the events to the two boys. They didn't look surprised, necessarily, nor worried. Reyna couldn't tell what they were thinking.
"So, he said 'praetor,' but nothing else," Jason clarified.
Reyna nodded. "He looked like he was about to say something else, but his eyes, like, rolled back in his head, and he disappeared."
"You can't tell me that he's not being possessed by an eidolon," Percy said. "The eidolon was making so he couldn't say what he wanted to say!"
Reyna turned her head to look at New Rome. "Yeah, that's what it seems."
"What it seems?" Percy asked.
"Yeah, you're right," Reyna said, looking back at the two boys. "You know, let's just put this on hold, alright? As long as he doesn't hurt anyone, in the meantime, let's just put it to the side."
Jason furrowed his eyebrows. "We still need him to protect the valley."
Reyna shook her head. "We can't worry about that at the moment," she told the blond.
"This is weird, coming from you," Percy pointed out. "You're usually on top of these types of things."
Reyna rolled her eyes. "It's just, I don't think there's much we can do about this."
Jason looked taken aback. "What about Piper?"
Reyna's eyes widened. How had she forgotten about that? "You're right... If Terminus shows up again, we'll make sure to have Piper on the sight."
Jason nodded, looking satisfied, as if the thought of not having Piper involved hurt him.
Speaking of the daughter of Aphrodite, she came up to Jason and grabbed his arm. "Is everything alright?"
Jason looked down at her lovingly, bringing the smallest twinge of pain to Reyna's gut. "Yeah," he said to his girlfriend. Jason nodded to Percy and Reyna and then walked away with Piper.
Percy eyed Reyna. "I guess we're alone, now."
Reyna rolled her eyes and laughed. "With the whole camp around? I don't think so!"
Percy winked, making Reyna blush furiously. "You know what I mean."
"You're such a flirt," Reyna said, trying to tone down the redness in her cheeks.
Percy smiled. "I suppose."
Reyna could feel a few dozen eyes on her, and she lowered her voice. "Everyone's staring."
Percy shrugged. "And?"
"You're girlfriend's probably watching, too," Reyna pointed out.
This seemed to make Percy squirm. "Yeah, ok, I'll leave." He winked once more before he headed over to his table. Reyna continued to stand there, her face burning. It was alright if Percy flirted with her in private (well, even that was kinda weird, especially when he had a girlfriend), but in public? That was a bit much. Reyna walked over to her usual table, feeling several eyes on her back. Her cloak was supposed to block swords and other such things, but it couldn't deflect the feeling of so many people staring at her after what they had just witnessed.
Annabeth's POV
Annabeth couldn't ignore what she had just seen. Had Percy just winked at Reyna? She knew she shouldn't feel this possessive, but it didn't seem like a friendly wink. It seemed... more romantic... like he was flirting. Annabeth was good at reading people, and she was sure Percy had purposely done that. But why?
Percy sat down next to her at their table with their friends. "Sorry, I was just talking about Terminus with Reyna."
Annabeth nodded, looking down at her food. "It's fine."
Percy seemed to notice her evasive behavior, and he put a hand on her back. "You good, Wise Girl?"
Annabeth nodded. "Yeah. Eat."
"Yes ma'am," Percy teased.
Annabeth smiled, but she still felt a weird pit in her stomach. This only made her think about all the times that Reyna had been alone with Percy. What had they been doing alone? Probably just praetor things, her tactical side said. Her emotional side said otherwise, however.
Annabeth turned to stare at Percy, trying to read his emotions. He was eating his pancakes drowned in syrup, which was a crime in itself (those poor pancakes!), but she was trying to see if he would give anything away.
Percy noticed her eyes on him. "Do you need something?"
"Sorry," Annabeth turned away.
Something flashed in Percy's sea-green eyes. "Wise Girl, you're acting really weird. Are you sure you're alright?"
Annabeth tried for a small smile. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Percy seemed to sense that she was lying, but he gave her a kiss on the lips anyways. Annabeth shivered, his lips tasted like salt, as always, but there was a bit of syrup there, too. Made sense, considering his blue pancakes.
Percy went back to devouring his breakfast-for-dinner and Annabeth continued to pick at her omelet. She couldn't help but feel something missing in that kiss...
Usually, there was a deepness in Percy's kisses as if Annabeth was a part of him, and he would never let her go. Now, things felt different. Too different. That deepness was gone, and Annabeth had a feeling she knew why...
Percy's POV
Percy finished his pancakes as the sun was almost fully set. He could tell that Annabeth wasn't telling him everything. She was acting differently, and picking at her food. He had tried giving her a kiss to make her feel better, but it didn't seem to work.
Percy knew that Reyna was right about Annabeth watching him flirt, and he felt kind of bad about it. Bad enough to stop flirting with Reyna? No way. He couldn't explain it, but he felt more alive and happy with Reyna. Being around her felt amazing. Not that being around Annabeth wasn't one of Percy's favorite things to do, it's just that things felt more real with Reyna. If possible, he felt more in love with Reyna than he ever had with Annabeth, even when they first started dating.
Percy knew that Annabeth would be heartbroken to hear this, which is why he didn't plan to tell her... yet. He knew it was inevitable and that he would have to break up with Annabeth if he truly wanted to be with Reyna, but he just couldn't bring himself to do it. At least not now.
Maybe after the quest? No, it had to be before the quest, but then things would be awkward on the quest. He would have to plan everything perfectly. Right place, right time, everything. He just had to hope that Annabeth didn't come to a firm conclusion just yet. He wasn't ready to lose her yet.
So many yets. He didn't plan to tell her yet, he hoped Annabeth wouldn't come to a conclusion yet, he wasn't ready to lose her yet.
Yet was a funny word. It pretty much meant to procrastinate (which Percy had to admit he did a lot), but could he procrastinate in a relationship? Did things work that way?
Probably not, but Percy loved both girls too much to make a decision yet.
After dinner, Percy went to the Little Tiber. The water refreshed his mind and helped him to think. Before he left, he had told Annabeth that he wanted to go alone, and she seemed to understand. She was hesitant, but she understood.
Annabeth had no reason to worry, however. Percy simply wanted some "Percy" time, and he didn't plan on seeing anyone else.
Percy walked toward the river, with his hands in his jeans pockets. He had on a blue hoodie because he couldn't decide whether to wear a Camp Jupiter or Half-Blood hoodie.
Once he arrived, he simply sat by the water, watching the water flow by. He instantly felt rejuvenated, just by being near the water source.
At this point, the sun had nearly dipped completely behind the hills. It was soothing to watch, but Percy was still uptight.
He had to decide between the two main girls in his life. It was either Annabeth or Reyna.
Percy continued to watch the water, which was now reflecting the setting sun, and it was really pretty. Talking from the mess hall could still be heard, though they must've been cleaning up by now.
Percy didn't want to sound selfish, but he hoped that no one else would come to the Tiber, whether to swim or think. He was glad to have it to himself, with little distraction.
Percy knew that he didn't really need much time to think. The answer was obvious to him. He would have to choose... Reyna.
It only made sense. He knew that he loved her more than Annabeth, though of course he still loved the blond. Now it was just a matter of breaking the news to Annabeth unless she figured it out herself somehow...
Annabeth's POV
Annabeth finally finished her omelet, though, by the time she did, it was cold. She just couldn't eat. Especially since Percy had left for the Tiber after he'd finished his food. She didn't trust that he was alone there. What if Reyna was with him?
She knew she was being overly skeptical, but she couldn't help herself! She was suspicious of the two praetors and their "friendship."
Annabeth didn't pin herself as a jealous girlfriend, but she had reason to worry. So, after she had finished, she excused herself from the table with her friends. She was going to take a... quick stroll by the Tiber. Just to... check on how Percy was doing. There was no wrong in that, right?
She took the short way to the Little Tiber, her eyes out for Reyna and Percy together. As a matter of fact, she hadn't seen Reyna leave the mess hall, but one could never be too certain.
Once she could see the edge of the river, she saw a guy in a blue hoodie, who would be Percy. No one else was there. Annabeth couldn't help it. She breathed a sigh of relief. Part of her had sort of wanted to catch Percy in the act, at least then she would know for sure. The rest of her was so happy that Percy wasn't having a moment with Reyna. She didn't know how she would react. Would she run away? Yell at Percy and Reyna? Break down crying? Either way, she was glad she didn't have to figure it out. At least not yet.
Percy's POV
Percy stayed by the Little Tiber for about another ten minutes, watching the water flow past. Every once in a while, he would stick his hand in, just to feel a bit stronger and replenished. He really was glad that Poseidon was his dad. Water gave Percy power, and there was definitely no lack of it.
Percy stood up and brushed off his jeans, heading back to the main part of the camp. As far as he was concerned, there were no activities tonight. Honestly, he kind of just wanted to have a guys' night with his friends. Girls confused him, and he wanted to just hang out with some people who may or may not understand how he was feeling.
He headed for the mess hall because he figured they'd be there. Once he arrived, he only found Frank, talking with Hazel as the venti were cleaning up. There were other laggers, of course, but none that he was looking for.
"Hey, Frank," Percy said. "Do you know where Jason and Leo are?"
Frank furrowed his eyebrows. "I think they said they were going to the arena. Typical, don't ya think?"
Dueling was typical, for Jason at least. The guy loved to fight. Percy wondered why Leo would be there, though. The son of Hephaestus was definitely not one for dueling.
Percy nodded and walked away, not before inviting Frank to hang out with them. He kindly declined, as he'd rather spend the beautiful night with Hazel. Now the sun has completely set and the sky was dark. Percy looked up and could see the smallest amount of stars in the sky. San Fransisco wasn't too far away, so there was still light pollution, just not as much. The view reminded Percy of Long Island. All that was missing was the smoke rising high into the sky from the campfire.
Percy made it to the arena and found who he was looking for. He invited them to hand out in the boys' barracks, and they gladly agreed. It seemed they needed the time off, too.
On their way to the barracks, they ran into Piper and Annabeth, and they explained what they were going to be doing for the rest of the night. The girls understood though Annabeth seemed a bit disappointed that she couldn't spend the night with Percy. He tried to make it up to her with a kiss, however.
The boys parted with the girls and left for the barracks, excited for their little time together. A time to talk about girls, and problems, and just be guys. Of course, he wouldn't tell them that he was cheating on Annabeth. Kind of... Was it cheating? Yeah, it had to be...
I'm sorry this one is out late! I will try my absolute hardest to get the future ones out right on time! I just had yet another busy week! Please forgive me, y'all! Anyways, I hope you enjoyed it! This one was really fun to write. Also, if you want me to write the boys' night, let me know If not, I'll just skip ahead. Tell me what you guys think! Anyways, bye! Review, review, and REVIEW!
