"Come on, Selaria!" According to the note in the letter, Visenya went to the castle underground, taking advantage of the fact that most people were still feasting above.
"We shouldn't be here, my Lady!" Her servant definitely didn't share her enthusiasm. "What if it's a trap? Some sick way to test our loyalty?"
"Oh, do not exaggerate." Vis rolled her eyes and walked even farther down the stairs.
The truth was, she was quite scared herself. But what did she have to lose? Apparently, there was a special gift waiting for her here, so she wanted to find out what it was. At worst they will lock her in her chamber and she will regret it later, but at least she would try...
"Closed." Selaria said as soon as she saw the chain on the gate. "Can we go back...?"
"Shh!" Vis put her index finger to her lips as she said this. She heard footsteps, so as soon as she interrupted her servant, she grabbed her wrist as well and dragged her to the sculptures standing nearby.
Soon the footsteps became louder and the faint shadow of two figures was visible on the wall, walking towards the closed area of the castle's basement. They sat silently behind the sculpture, clearly hearing the lock being opened, and further footsteps - farther and farther away - along with indistinct conversation. They waited a while longer until Vis decided to come out of hiding.
"I'll go there, wait for me here." She said, remembering what was written in the letter: She must find Balerion's skull, the largest of them, and something will be waiting for her there. It shouldn't be such a difficult task, even considering how big the underground is .
"My Lady, you shouldn't..."
"Don't overdo it. I'll be back before you know it." She smiled at her and immediately began to follow the sound of footsteps, willy-nilly.
She no longer listened to her maid's objections, she went ahead, soon disappearing around the bend. She kept looking around carefully, looking primarily for any other people who could find her here.
She lingered longer at the tattered Targaryen ancestral flags. All dusty, dumped there years ago... She was sad to see it, it perfectly expressed how others felt about her family, which only made her feel more alone. At the last moment, she withdrew her hand from touching the fabric, but decided to move on rather than spend another precious minute thinking about her family.
It didn't take long to find the huge skull. As she looked around and approached it, she realized that the skull was almost twice as big as she was. However, she didn't spend much time on it, she had to focus on what she had to find. She quickly found a box hidden in the back.
She knew she had to hurry because those people who had gone farther would probably turn back, so she crouched down in front of the box and quickly opened it.
I promised I'd keep an eye on you.
For a moment she couldn't even move, but then she reached out to take a large, dark egg.
What was all that supposed to mean? What was this "special gift" about? Are there any jokes about her?
It didn't matter what the answer was, because Visenya immediately came to her senses when she heard footsteps not too far away. She quickly hid the egg under her thin coat and, hastily closing the box as quietly as she could, began to return to the exit.
When she saw the gate, she sped up to get as far away from this place as possible.
"Let's go." She just threw this words towards Selaria, not even looking in her direction, but instead running up the stairs to find herself in the 'safe', palace corridors again. Admittedly, she didn't feel very comfortable having to carry this egg all the time, but she didn't have much of a choice. "Leave me alone, please." She said, breathing a sigh of relief as soon as she was in her chamber and sat on the bed.
"My Lady, what happened...?"
"I said: Leave me alone." She repeated, turning only a little to the maid. Selaria didn't add anything else, just left the room closing the door behind her. "What's that supposed to be...?" She sighed, placing the egg on the bed. And what was she supposed to do with it?
She didn't know what to do at this point. Is it really this gift? An egg?
She didn't even know if she could trust Selaria with this, because what would this woman do when she found out about everything?
She had so many questions and no answers...
Visenya was sitting on the bed with her head propped on her elbows, staring at the egg. When she heard a knock on the door, she didn't even know how long she had been sitting like that. She got up and threw the quilt over the egg to hide it. She then walked over to the door, opening it slightly.
"What are you doing here, ser?" She asked, seeing that pesky blonde hair again. She didn't feel like talking to him at that moment.
"I wanted to... I just wanted to ask how you're feeling." She frowned. Really, was that it? "My nephew Joffrey is..."
"Difficult?" She finished for him, wanting to close the door in Jaime's face. He nodded at her words. Was he... worried about her? She wasn't entirely sure, it was hard for her to read the emotions on his face just like that, so she could only guess. "Yes, I noticed. But..." she sighed. "No problem, I didn't take it personally."
Lie.
"All right, it's just that Joffrey often says a lot of things he doesn't really mean." This time he lied, which she sensed immediately. She wasn't stupid, and she'd heard plenty of rumors about the new king. And now, when she met him...? She absolutely didn't like such a person on the throne.
But what effect did she have on all this?
"It's really no problem ser, I don't care about this... stupidity." she felt how much this conversation was forced and she wanted to end it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to be that simple. "Something else...?"
"No, no. I just wanted to make sure everything is okay."
"I's okay, thank you." He nodded, and she was finally able to close the door with relief.
Jaime, on the other side of the door, was a bit disappointed in himself. Seriously, that was the excuse he find to talk? Laughable, no wonder she wanted to finish it as soon as possible. It wasn't even what he really wanted to talk about, but as usual, things had gone wrong for him...
He crumpled up the letter from his father in his hand. It was pretty much the number one reason he'd come to talk to her in the first place, but... Well, it worked out the way it did.
What was in the letter? Some war related stuff, but the bottom line was that Tywin was writing to Jaime again about a legacy he absolutely didn't want to leave to Tyrion. Plus, with his departure from the Kingsguard, Tywin also required his marriage to Maegelle, in case her aunt across the sea wanted to attack Westeros someday.
It was no longer about the fact of marriage, because Maegelle was a really beautiful woman and many people talked about it when she appeared in the capital, but about the fact that his father wanted to control his life again, to change the path he had already chosen.
He stood outside her door for a moment, thinking about all this, then turned on his heel and walked away.
At the same time, on the other side of the door, Visenya was lying on the bed, dozing, looking at the egg. She didn't even realize when she fell asleep and that she was dreaming.
She didn't know if it was her or someone else, but she saw a hazy woman figure walking through the streets of King's Landing and then through the castle corridors. She headed straight for the throne room, oblivious to the ruined houses around her, the terrified people, the dead soldiers. She was walking towards her goal. Heels beat a rhythm as they hit the stone streets and then the castle floors. Somewhere in the background was the faint cry of people, some shouting of soldiers and inhuman roars.
But what mattered to the woman was the throne before which she finally stood. She reached for the armrest. The exact moment she touched him, the scenery changed. Now it was flames and only the sound of them. The sound of them digesting wood. There was no more crying, though the atmosphere didn't seem much happier than in the capital.
Finally, another silhouette began to flicker between the flames, this time it wasn't hazy. Her silver hair, covered with ashes, and her naked - equally soiled - back were clearly visible. The face was still in shadow, but that wasn't important.
Behind the girl on the ground lay an egg that seemed to burn in fire, but after a while, when the shell began to crack, a tiny dragon came out of the egg, which immediately began to climb up the girl's back. The moment she raised her hand to touch the dragon, everything stopped.
Darkness.
Silence.
And at that moment, Visenya opened her eyes, still alone in the chamber, lying next to the egg. Dragon egg.
