Chapter 1

The sun was just starting to come up over the mountains and shine its light on the city of Los Angeles. It was going to be a beautiful Saturday morning and the beginning of the summer break from school. The house was quiet as Matthew made his way downstairs with Moxie.

Andy rolled over in bed and reached out for Sharon but she wasn't there. He raised his head to look around their room and saw her sitting outside on their balcony. She had a blanket wrapped around her and her eyes were closed as she listened to the morning wake-up call of the birds chirping.

He groaned as he sat up, his back ached from their last case they had closed two nights before. Andy had given chase to their suspect after he took off when he spotted Amy and Julio closely approaching him. Andy had ended up tackling their suspect to the ground. Julio and Amy took the suspect into custody while Mike helped Andy up from the ground.

"You okay?" Mike asked as Andy huffed, looking around, spotting Sharon stepping out of the van with Provenza. She did not look happy. "For now," Andy muttered. "Thanks Mike," he added as he stood there waiting for the scolding from Sharon to start. Much to his surprise, it didn't. Nor did it start after they had finished up their case. He was at a loss with that.

As Andy stood up from their bed, he put on his green robe and made his way outside to join Sharon. She heard the sliding glass door open and turned her head towards the door. She smiled at Andy, taking in how messy his hair had looked, and scooted over in the chair.

"Morning," she said to him as she held out her hand for him to grab. "Morning," he gruffed as he grabbed her hand in his. "How long have you been out here?" he asked her as he sat down next to her. "I watched the sun rise, it's so peaceful out here this morning," she told him.

"How's your back?" she asked him as she slid her hand inside his robe running her fingers along his middle back muscles. "Would you think anything less of me if I told you it's a little sore?" he looked at her, giving her his charming smile after saying that. "You're not 30 anymore, Andy," she whispered as he leaned into her. "Hmm, that's not what you said last night," he mumbled as he pulled her in for a kiss.

Meanwhile, downstairs, Matthew had already made a bowl of cereal and made a bowl of dog food for Moxie. He took both of the bowls and made his way to the back door with Moxie. He placed the two bowls on the counter, grabbed a blanket from the shelf, and opened the back door, letting Moxie out first.

Grabbing the bowls, he made his way outside, joining Moxie in the yard and placing a blanket on the ground to have a picnic with his dog. Both Sharon and Andy heard the back door open and close and wondered who had opened it. They both gave each other a look as Andy pulled back and looked around the corner of the balcony to see the backyard.

"That son of yours is up already and in the backyard with Moxie," he smiled as he told her. "He's probably excited that he's officially on summer break," she smiled as she stood up, wrapping the blanket around her body. "Why don't you go see what he's up to while I make us breakfast," she suggested to him as he followed her back inside their room.

They made their way down the stairs and into the kitchen. Sharon headed towards the refrigerator to see what ingredients they had for breakfast. Andy saw the cereal box left out on the counter. "Looks like Matthew already made himself breakfast," he said in passing as he made his way to the back door.

As Andy stepped outside, he saw Matthew finishing up his bowl of cereal and Moxie watching the boy eat. "Hey kiddo," Andy said as he approached the two. "You're up early this morning," he added when Matthew didn't say anything. "It's the first day of no school," Matthew said excitedly as he looked up at Andy.

"Is that so?" Andy said as Matthew gave the leftover milk to Moxie to drink. "You fed Moxie already?" Andy asked him. "Yep, we had a picnic breakfast," Matthew told him as he stood up and placed his cereal bowl inside Moxie's bowl. Moxie wanted to play ball as he brought his big red ball over to where Matthew and Andy were now standing.

"What time is your baseball game today?" Andy asked as he watched Matthew throw the red ball and Moxie chase after it. "11," Matthew replied. "Are you and mom going to be there?" he asked. "Yes," Andy said as he tousled Matthew's hair.

Meanwhile, back in the kitchen, Sharon was making scrambled egg whites and toast for them to eat. Her phone started to ring as she was cutting up some fresh fruit. She walked over to the counter where she left her phone and picked it up. Seeing that it was Emily calling, she answered it.

"Good morning sweetheart," Sharon said to her daughter. "Morning mom, you're up early," Emily said. "How's the new condo?" Sharon asked her as they had moved her into her new condo about two weeks ago after Emily spent a few months looking for her new place in Los Angeles.

"It's good, I love the view and it's nice to have my own place again," Emily told her mom. She had found her condo close to the ballet studio. Her windows in her living room looked out over the hills to the west of the city.

"What are you guys doing today?" she asked her mom. "Uh, well Matthew has a ball game this morning at 11 so we are taking him there and watching his game. We are supposed to not be on call this weekend," Sharon said as she placed the fruit containers back in the refrigerator.

"What are you doing today?" Sharon asked her. "I'm getting ready to head out to practice now, maybe we could do dinner tonight?" Emily said as she closed her condo door behind her. "Sure, that sounds fine," Sharon answered her and they both hung up the phones.

Meanwhile, Andy came back inside the house and went over to where the eggs were currently cooking on the stove. "Are these about ready?" he asked as Sharon was setting out plates for them. "They should be done, yes," she told him and he turned the stove off, gathering an oven mitt, and brought the pan with the eggs over to the table, setting them on top of the hot pad that was already there.

Matthew came running back inside the house. "Hey, what's the hurry?" Andy asked him. "Moxie threw up," Matthew told him. Andy looked behind Matthew to see if Moxie had followed the boy inside. "Okay, where is Moxie now?" Andy asked him as Sharon grabbed the toast out of the toaster and brought the plate of them over to the table.

"He's still outside," Matthew informed both of them. Sharon looked at Andy and Andy sighed. "Okay, I'll go see if he's okay," Andy said and stood up from the table, following Matthew outside. As Andy stepped outside into the yard, he saw Moxie laying down on the grass, panting, and enjoying being outside.

"He threw up over there," Matthew told Andy and pointed in the direction where the fence was by the pool. Andy walked over to where Moxie was laying down. "Hey buddy, were you not feeling good?" he asked the dog, leaning down to pet him. "I think he'll be okay," Andy said to Matthew and walked over to where he was standing, staring at something in the grass.

"See, this is what he threw up," Matthew said pointing to the pile of yellow slime as Andy looked at it. It was mostly liquid with a little bit of grass in it. "Well, I'll tell you what," Andy said as he went to get the hose to clean up the grass. Matthew followed him. "Let's keep an eye on him and see how he does. I'm sure he had something upset him and he seems to feel better," Andy said as Matthew looked over to see Moxie laying on his back, scratching his back on the grass.

Matthew started to laugh watching Moxie do that. "Why don't you go back inside the house with him and have some of that fruit that mom cut up while I hose down this area," Andy told him as he started to spray the grass with water. "Okay," Matthew said as he ran over to Moxie and the both of them went back inside the house.

"Is everything okay?" Sharon asked as Matthew walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Moxie followed him and sat next to Sharon. "He threw up yellow slime but dad just said to keep an eye on him," Matthew said as he took a piece of fruit and ate it. Sharon hummed and looked down at the dog sitting next to her. She was petting him when Andy came back into the house.

"Let me warm up the eggs again for you," she told Andy as he sat down at the table. Sharon stood up and took the egg dish to the microwave and set it for 30 seconds. Meanwhile, Moxie stood up and walked over to Andy and sat down next to him, placing his head on Andy's knee. "Hey buddy," Andy said and he petted the top of Moxie's head.

Sharon sat back down with the egg dish after it was done warming up and they all continued to eat their breakfast. It was getting close to the time they needed to take Matthew for his game, he was waiting downstairs, in his uniform, playing with Moxie as Sharon came down the stairs wearing jeans, a shirt, and a cardigan sweater. She looked around the room. "Where's your father?" she asked Matthew but Matthew just shrugged his shoulders.

Sharon continued towards the back of the house and found Andy in the mud room. He was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and his Dodgers jersey. He was tidying up the area and putting things away. She was staring at him and was smiling when he turned around to look at her. "Hey, ready to go?" he asked her as he smiled at her. "Yes," she answered him as he finished placing one of the baskets back on the shelf.

"Do you think it's okay to leave Moxie here?" she asked him as she glanced down the hallway to see Matthew still sitting in the front area with Moxie. "He should be okay," Andy reassured her. "Unless, you want to take him with?" he suggested.

"We could do that, I'll watch him on the side and I'll bring a chair with, that way you can enjoy sitting on the bleachers with the other moms," he smiled at her. "You know, I'm sure all the moms there will just love Moxie, and flock over to you," Sharon said as she grabbed a blanket from the shelf.

"Huh, don't get jealous then," Andy told her and she laughed as she turned towards the kitchen and called out Matthew's name. Matthew and Moxie came running into the kitchen where she was standing. "Are you ready?" she asked him. "Yes," Matthew replied as he gave Moxie a hug.

"Your dad is bringing Moxie with so go take him out to the car," she told Matthew and Matthew quickly placed the leash on Moxie's collar and took him out to the backyard. "Ready?" she turned around to find Andy watching her. He walked up to her, leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on her lips. "Yes," he whispered as he held the door open for her and she stepped outside.

Everyone climbed into the car and they made their way to Matthew's baseball game.
