After they had left, Perry wondered if Della had known about Paul bringing Hamilton with him without knowing about it.

He didn't want Hamilton Burger on this case if he never heard or read about it in the first place. Maybe that's why Paul wanted him to help out. Perry put the Johnsons' names in his head after Paul answered from Hamilton Burger. He's still sharp on that.

Maybe later today he might drop by the police station and talk with them himself and see if he could get something out before Paul could.

Like he's been saying, he didn't recognize the car or license plate before they hit his car and he blacked out.

Actually, there was something he remembered just now - they were speeding over the speed limit! Why didn't Perry say something to Paul and Hamilton Burger about it before they left? Perry shook his head.

Good thing he's starting to remember something.

Perry almost forgot that he didn't have his car and Paul said it was at the garage. He can just take the bus to the police station. He didn't want to bother Paul and Hamilton to come back and pick him up and go straight there.

Perry called his office to check in on Della, but he didn't get any answer. He was wondering why she wasn't at the office doing her job. Whatever it was, he'll understand. He could try again later this afternoon and see if she's back there in the office. He needed to talk with about what went on in his office when she wasn't at the desk.

Perry decided to walk to the police station instead of taking a bus to pick him up and take him there.

He had a guess the Johnsons might ask him to be their lawyer but already had his. Perry decided to tell them if the question was bought up could be no because of Hamilton Burger.

Paul was back at his office after dropping Della off. He wondered if there was anything from Perry if he remembered something about the accident he was involved in. If he didn't call, maybe he reached out to Burger.

Paul decided to give Perry enough time to see if it was the right time to share if he'd remembered anything else about this case. It was his guess that Perry could've been at the police station himself. He didn't bother calling.

Even if Perry's a safe driver, Paul just didn't want Perry to risk his life if something dangerous had happened the other day when he was driving alone in the car.

When he heard about the accident, Paul remembered names of the paramedics and see if they were available now to talk with him for a bit. So he did just that.

Paul called the hospital and asked for the paramedics who took care of Perry.

"Hold on, sir. One of them should be here."

"Thank you. I'll wait."

Paul would worry about Perry later. He was supposed to have a few days off from work instead of going out of the house and talk with people about this case, but Paul understood that.

A paramedic came on the phone.

"Hello, Mr. Drake. I heard you wanted to speak with me."

"Yes, I do. It was about the accident from the other day."

"What do you need to know?"

"I was curious if you and Mr. Thompson had recognized Perry Mason right away when you took him in."

"I did, but it took a while to see if it was him."

"That's all I need to know, Mr. Logan. Do you remember what time you and Mr. Thompson were called in to take care of him?"

"I think it was ten minutes to nine."

"Thank you. That's all I need to know for now, but we'll be in touch."

"How is Mr. Mason doing?"

"He's fine, but starting to remember a little bit about what happened."

"He gave us a scare for sure. I'm sure the secretary knew about it."

"She does now. She's been taking care of one of his clients while he's away for a few days. I might call Mr. Thompson later and see if he remembers something besides your answer."

"I'm sure he might. Thank you for updating me on Mr. Mason."

"You're welcome. Maybe I'll speak with Dr. Webber later in person and get more information."

"I don't think today will be a good day for him," Mr. Logan replied.

"How come?"

"His day off, that's why."

"Do you have his home address?"

"Of course not."

"That's all I need to know. Have a good day, Mr. Logan."

"Same to you."

Now that he got that off his chest, Paul was able to check in and see if he had messages while he and Della were out. Paul also guessed Perry tried calling earlier, but he could be wrong.

He'll have to talk with Perry about his reaction with Burger being his lawyer on this case.

Perry arrived at the station. There was somebody at the front desk.

"Hello, Mr. Mason."

"Hello, Cassandra. Do you still have Thomas and Claire Johnson with you?"

"Yes, I do. I'll see if you could talk with Tragg."

"I do want to talk with him," Perry replied.

"I'll go find him."

Perry wanted to see if he heard about the accident. If it was on the news, they probably didn't mention his name, and was thankful for that if it happened.

While waiting, Perry wasn't that crazy about not driving his car over here to the station.

Good thing they didn't take his keys away from him.

"Hello, Perry," Tragg said.

"I'm sure you heard about the other person who was besides the Johnsons?"

"I think so. Did they find out who the other person was besides the Johnsons?"

"It was me."

"I don't believe it. How are you doing?"

"Fine. Mind if I go and see the Johnsons?"

"Yes, but keep it short."

"I will. Show me where they are."

He followed Tragg without saying anything else.

"Thank you."

Then Tragg left.

He saw the couple with their child like Paul had mentioned.

"Hello, Mr. Mason."

"If you don't mind, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, could I ask a few questions about the other day?"

"What about it?" Claire asked.

"Were you aware of the other drivers when the accident happened?"

"We try to, but there was another car that was close to her side of the car, which was the passenger's side," he answered.

"Some of us were trying to get to work at that time, Mr. Johnson. Were either of you hurt after the paramedics came to take one of us away?"

"No," she answered.

"Did either of you recognize which car you hit?"

Thomas answered that question.

"Good thing the car wasn't new. You could have killed the other drivers."

"Do you know who the driver was was the paramedics showed up for?" Claire Johnson asked.

"It was me."

"No way. Sorry if we hit the car," Thomas said.

"I blacked out after that."

"Sorry about bumping into your car like that."

"You be careful next time."

"Mr. Mason, are you going to let us be your clients for this case?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Johnson, I'm afraid I can't do it this time. I have one of my own."

"Why would you need a lawyer? You are one," Claire reminded him.

"Sometimes other lawyers will need one. Are you from another state?"

"Yes, Mr. Mason. We're just having some vacation time, and that's about it."

"I guess this accident ruined your vacation time, Mr. Johnson."

"Yes, it did. Maybe the next one will be better without accidents."

"Maybe."

"Mr. Mason, how long were you blacked out after they took you to the hospital?"

"Mr. Johnson, I can't answer that question. If my lawyer was here, he would say something if I could or couldn't answer."

"Are the other lawyers out there who could take care of us since you have your own?" Claire asked.

"I can write their names and phone numbers for you. I'm sorry I couldn't do it."

"What will happen now, Mr. Mason?"

"Well, Mr. Johnson, I think all of us will have to show up in court."

"How many people will be there?"

"I can't answer that either, Mr. Johnson. There will be a few of us on the witness stand, and that includes me, even though it's not my character to get up there in front of everyone to answer those questions. I mostly do that."

"What happened to your car?"

"It's at the garage. They don't want me to drive for a while after what happened."

"Sorry to hear about it. Has this happened to your car before?"

"No. We can talk with you about the car while in court. I will see you again another time."

Before leaving, Perry asked if they had a piece of paper and pencil or pen so he could make up that list. They did, so he was thankful for that.

"Thank you. If I wasn't involved in this accident, I would be your lawyer."

He handed Thomas the piece of paper and pen.

"I will see you in court."

Then he was out.

"Did you get what you came for?" Tragg asked.

"Yes, for now. I might be back unless Paul comes and asks questions."

"You can tell me what happened with that car accident. I did hear about it and read in the newspaper, but there wasn't any information about the car and person who was taken in from the paramedics."

"I guess we kept it personal so the whole town wouldn't get too excited and hear I was involved."

"I'm happy to hear you weren't killed, Perry. How is your car?"

"I can't have it for a while. If you want to ask me more questions, talk with my lawyer first."

"You have a lawyer?"

Perry nodded.

"I do. The Johnsons asked me to be theirs, but since I was involved as well, I couldn't. I might have to get on that witness stand."

"Who's your lawyer?"

"Hamilton Burger. Paul and Della went to him first."

"So he took the job?"

"Yes," Perry said.

"If I think of any questions, I will call his office. I know if you are a lawyer and there are some questions you can't answer without one around."

"There was one question they asked me, so I don't have Burger with me to say yes or no to answer it."

"You better go, Perry. I'll talk with you another time."

"Same here. You know where to reach out to me."

Then Perry left. Before leaving, he asked if he could use the phone.

"Yes, you can."

"I'm going to call my office and Paul to let them know where I am."

Della was finally at the office when he called.

"Hi, Perry."

"Hi, Della. I have a question for you."

"What's that?"

"I called earlier and you didn't answer. I thought you would have stayed at the office until I came back."

"I'm sorry, Perry. I wanted to be there with Paul when we went to see Hamilton."

"I get that. Next time when somebody calls, make sure to answer."

"I will, Perry. Where are you?"

"The police station."

"I thought you were supposed to be at home resting like the doctor said."

"I know, but I had to get some stuff off my chest before I did that. I wanted to meet the couple who bumped into my car when the paramedics took me in."

"Did you get anything out of them?"

"I did, but they asked a personal question and I didn't have Hamilton to be there with me to answer it. They did ask me to be their lawyer for this case, but I said no because I had Burger."

"Somebody should have been with you when the accident happened, Perry. You could have died too. Have you thought of that?"

"Yes, I did, Della. I told the Johnsons that. Good thing it didn't happen to them either. Tragg said he heard and read about the case."

"I'm sure he did. I will talk with you later and check in at your house."

"You don't need to, Della. I did remember something about the case."

"You did? What was it?"

"I'm not saying it to repeat a second or third time. I'll call Paul and Hamilton so all of you can hear the same thing at once."

"Good idea. I'll talk with you later."

"I'll take care of Paul and Hamilton at my house."

"All right. I'll say something if I see either of them."

"Thanks, Della. I will talk with you later."

"Bye, Perry."

"Bye, Della."
