The sky above gravesfield / Friday June 1st 17:00 hrs
Luz soared into the sky mounted on Owlbert, trying to dodge a magical creature that was chasing after her. She then screamed on top of her lungs as purple lighting was shot from her hands at full force. She already used a lot of her magic today so her vile sac was aching, but she needed to keep going. Her opponent received the full impact of her attack and screamed, but that wasn't enough to knock it down.
"Gyahh!" The beast she was facing roared and flew towards her at a speed that was impressive for something its size. It was so fast that she couldn't see it well, but she knew that it had a build similar to the gryphon and some kind of metallic armor.
"I can't face it in the open skies, I need to go down and find some cover!"
That was easier said than done. The beast would not let her go away that easily, and that's not mentioning her other problem: The portal where it came through.
Yes, the magical creature had originated from a golden portal that opened on top of gravesfield. It happened without a warning, one second she was just hanging out with Amity and in the other someone made a tear in the fabric of reality, the universe must hate her.
"Titan! Stay still!" She cursed as she tried to fire a barrage of energy missiles towards it but they bounced on the metallic plates covering it. She wasn't sure if those were natural like scales or if someone put armor on that beast but they made the fight annoying, her spells couldn't penetrate those and the reflection of the sun made her eyes hurt, it was as if it had a flashbang incorporated on it.
Another roar and the beast charged at her with its talons extended. She ducked under them and as it passed she could see a bit more of its anatomy: It had grey fur with smaller white feathers covering its limbs, it had a similar biology than the griffins but it seemed to be thicker and bigger.
"Just what is this thing? I have never heard of something like it" She thought as she fired icicle shards at it "Is it even from the boiling isles?"
Her attention parted from the beast when she heard a whooshing sound, accompanied by the noise of some fabric tearing itself apart. She turned around to find the source of it and she was shocked to see another portal forming in the skies, this time it seemed to be bigger.
She clenched her teeth and threw a blizzard towards the monster with her ice and wind glyphs. The flying creature did not see it coming and was frozen by it mid air. It was encased in an ice cube and started falling towards the ground.
"It probably won't be enough to hold it forever but I have something else to deal with!"
She raced towards the new portal and as she started thinking on ways to close it something appeared on it. At first it started as a mass in the middle of the dimensional puddle, but then it grew into something else, a round and white object that she swore she had seen before, but there was no way of knowing since it hadn't fully emerged yet.
"It's not a creature. Are they sending objects now? What's happening?" She was unsure on what to do, should she stop it before it came through? Would that be dangerous for the dimensions if she damaged the portal? Could she cause a nuclear explosion by meddling with the fabric of time and space? There were far too many questions.
The mysterious object kept passing through and before she could make up her mind it managed to merge entirely. She was horrified by what she saw, because she was right, she did see something like this before. A gigantic balloon with bat-shaped wings to the side attached to a boat, it was an airship from the emperor's coven filled with coven scouts.
"Wha? But how?" She was so stunned she couldn't act
"Whoa man, that felt trippy" One of the guards said while holding their head.
"Okey, that's it, I'm never being a statue again. Next time I'll tell Mirra to shove it up her-"
"Wait, who's that?" One of them noticed Luz "Oh my titan! She is using a palisman! It must be the wild witch they told us about!"
"Fire!" The other one declared.
Just like that she had to swerve away from magical projectiles thrown at her: Fire, lightning, light, abomination goo, and even a boot.
"Jake, did you just throw your boot at her?" She heard a woman ask.
"I'm still woozy ok? Give me a minute"
Luz watched in horror as the attacks that missed her headed directly towards the city, one fireball in particular managed to land in a building and the explosion could be heard from where they were.
"Hey! Don't do that! If you wanna fight let's fight here" She shouted at them angrily while thinking of a way to de-escalate the situation.
"It does not matter how this happened, I'll have to worry about that later"
"Hear that folks? This wild witch thinks she can tell the emperor's coven what to do" The person who seemed to be the captain of the ship mocked her and the rest laughed "Let's light this place up, pals!"
Another round of magical attacks (This time the guy didn't throw her a boot) but now they weren't aimed at her, instead all of them were directed at the city.
"No!"
She flew as fast as she could and conjured up a shield using a combination of glyphs.
A golden barrier emerged from the glyph combo, it was translucent so it allowed her to see and big enough to cover most of the nearby buildings. All of the attacks bounced off from it but she still felt the impact. To make things worse, she was now stuck in place and couldn't dodge.
"This is getting out of hand, I can't do this alone!"
Luckily, she didn't have to.
A yellow lighting hit her attackers, disrupting them and shaking their airship. Someone else appeared on the scene mounted in a staff. She couldn't see well because of the angle the sun hitting her eyes hid her saviour's silhouette, but she could distinguish a palisman.
"What's happening?"
She didn't have time to get an answer because something hit her again. It was fast, her eyes only saw it as a blur, but it tackled her and almost knocked her out of owlbert. When she managed to recover from the blow she was faced with the beast charging at her again.
Grunting she pulled herself up and used her plant glyph. Vines sprouted from the ground and entangled the beast, but she knew that those wouldn't hold for long.
"Captain!" She heard the people in the ship call "There's another wild witch!"
"I can see that you moron! Shoot at him too!" He shouted with anger.
She was debating on her next action when there was another explosion "Now what?". However this time it wasn't directed at her: A ray of fire hit the airship and made a hole on the balloon, making it fall. The screams of the coven scouts reached her ears as they fell from the sky and crashed on the street. She turned back to see the people in suits swarming the nearby buildings, they had set up strange turrets and mortars on the rooftops, she assumed that those were the ones they used to shoot the ship down.
Luz flew towards them with an uneasy feeling, she did not know where she stood with them but she hoped that they were in a collaborative mood. One of them stood amongst the rest, a young man with black hair and a tired face.
"We will evacuate the citizens and try to stay out of your way" He yelled at her. She was sure that she had never heard his voice but something seemed familiar about it, to the point where she was inclined to believe him "What are you waiting for? Go after them!"
Luz nodded and flew towards the crash site, the balloon had become entangled in a lamp post while the boat part had dislodged from it and crashed into the street. The witches were all scattered on the floor trying to get their bearings; Some were still on what was left of the boat, while the others were around the street, one of them was puking in the side. She didn't want to give them any time to recover so she blasted them with a combination of her fire, ice, and light glyphs, creating several ice beams. They blasted against the coven witches and covered them with a thick layer of ice up to their necks.
"Ack!"
"That's cold!"
"Stop her!"
"Did you have to freeze my puke? It looks gross"
All of them were trying to break free from the frost but they couldn't cast spells without moving their fingers, they were effectively trapped.
Luz did not celebrate though. She heard a roar and knew that the beast managed to release itself from its thorny restraints, but this time she was ready for it. She dodged to the side in her palisman at the last minute and blasted her ice beams at it, hoping that it would slow it down, but all it did was enrage it. The witch that saved her before jumped to the action again, flying towards the beast and launching several attacks at it while evading its claws. This time she couldn't help but notice that she wasn't able to distinguish their figure: They moved so fast and used so many spells that the lightning around them was weird, it was as if they were always covered in shadows. Luz assumed they just were under a cloaking spell.
Taking advantage of her distracted enemy she approached the frozen witches. She eyed them all and decided to start by the captain.
"Okay playtime's up, how did you get here? Answer me or-"
"Or you what?" He scoffed at her "It doesn't matter what you do to us wild witch, we are merely the beginning"
"What do you mean by that?" She was getting scared about it.
"Heh… why don't you look up?" He said with cockiness
She slowly raised her head with fear. At first she didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but then she realized that the sky was of a different color: The light blue had been replaced by a swirl of golden, green, white, and black. It took her a few seconds to realize that the entire block was covered by a huge portal. Several airships were descending from it, each one of them carrying coven witches.
"No…" She felt hopeless, there wasn't much she could do against that.
But she had to try something.
Arming herself with courage she started flying up towards the approaching ships, only to be hit by something and knocked down her staff. She tried to grab it again but some chains materialized on her limbs and made it impossible to move, she limply felt to the ground like a fish flopping out of the water
"Hello, remember me?" She couldn't see her face from the position where she was, but the armor was the same one that belonged to the guard captain that was with Wrath and the golden guard "Want to have a rematch?"
Something yanked her head and forced her to stand up, she was faced against a witch with blue hair, pale skin with freckles, tusks coming out of her mouth, and golden eyes. She smacked her face and sent her back to the ground.
"Not so tough now, are ya?" She grabbed her by the chains.
"Luz!" She heard a male voice say her name and the other witch rushed to her rescue, only to be blasted away by the energy beams from the coven scouts that managed to free themselves from the ice.
"Death to all the wild witches!" They exclaimed as they surrounded him.
She looked to the sides and saw how the MCU tried to fend off the airships with their turret and guns, only for them to be outgunned and destroyed with massive fireballs and thunderstorms. All of the buildings were being destroyed to make way for the ships, even when most civilians were evacuated she could still see some being trapped by the rubble.
"Stop! Why are y- hmmph!" New chains materialized around her neck, gagging her.
"Oh no, you are not allowed to talk" She kneeled to face her "Do you have any idea how much your little escape act has tormented me these past few months? I am going to make you pay, starting by making you watch how your pathetic humans die!"
She struggled in that chain, trying to free herself. She called for owlbert but her palisman didn't respond. She tried to reach for her holding bag to grab a magic item, move her fingers to draw a spell circle, but she couldn't do anything in the state she was in…
All around her the witches wreaked havoc, tearing buildings apart, causing explosions around, she couldn't help but to feel guilty about this. To make things worse the beast came back, it looked like it was about to swipe at her but it was stopped by the coven witches, they seemed to be able to control it somehow. Now that she was paying attention to it, the plating surrounding it wasn't scales or a shell, it was armor that they had put on it for protection, with a helmet and everything.
"Everything that you love will be destroyed before your eyes" There was something wrong with her voice, it felt distorted somehow "Starting with this"
The coven scouts around the beast took its helmet off. That revealed some black eyes like the night sky, but with a familiar face.
"Eda?" The last thing she heard was a roar
The owl house / Saturday January 15th 9:30 hrs
Luz woke up with a yelp. She wasn't sure why but her heart was racing at an incredible pace and she was sweating profoundly. At first it was hard to tell what was happening but after a while she realized that 1) she was in her room and 2) she wasn't in danger, she took long breaths to calm herself down.
"That was a nightmare… What was it about again?" She tried to recall what she saw in her dream but the memories were fading away from her like sand escaping through her fingers. She tried to write down some of it but by the time she found her notebook the details were all fuzzy, she decided that it wasn't worth the struggle so she just forgot about it.
She was about to start her day when someone literally bursted her door open.
"There you are! What are you doing still asleep at this hour?" Lilith invaded the privacy of her room, without asking her if she was presentable first.
"LILITH!" She scrambled to cover herself.
"Oh it's fine, I'm not looking" She said while facing a wall "Do you know what time it is? Come on, you need to get up"
"But it's saturday!" She said while hiding in the covers.
"And? This house won't clean itself Luz. I don't want to live in a garbage dump, do you?"
Luz growled in frustration. Eda's last pair of business ventures had her tearing the house upside down, leaving her merchandise all over the place. She did agree that the house needed cleaning but nothing was worth getting up early on a saturday, especially considering that she couldn't use magic to do it because Lilith would be present.
The black haired woman had become more attached and more protective of her since christmas. Apparently she had been granted a leave of absence in her work, which gave her full time to be at home and "take care" of her and Eda. It's not like she didn't appreciate her, in many ways she had become a part of her family, it's just that she could be overbearing sometimes.
*sigh* "Can at least have breakfast first?"
"Yes but be quick about it. Eda told me that she would need more help with her shop this afternoon"
Luz moaned a complaint and resigned herself to her fate.
As she completed her tasks she could not help but ponder on how she had fallen into routine these last couple months. There hadn't been any reports or attacks from magical creatures ever since the world saw her and the dragon and, since she didn't have anything to fight against, she had fallen into a repetitive domestic life. A part of her loved that aspect: Being with her friends, studying what she wanted, and going to the city just to have fun. But most of her hated it, it felt like she was wasting her time here while she should be trying to get back home. She was afraid that if she let herself enjoy this she would fall into stagnation and never want to go home again.
She was so deep in thought that she didn't notice Lilith calling for her.
"Luz?" She shook her shoulder "Is everything ok? You have been spacing out"
"Oh yeah, everything is alright!" She was quick to lie "Just thinking about stuff you know?"
"Oh well" It was clear that she didn't believe her but she wasn't going to press it "If that's the case then you can go upstairs with Eda, she was looking for you and I told her that you would go as soon as we were done here"
Luz rolled her eyes and suppressed a grunt, her saturday was looking worse and worse as the time went on. She lazily dragged her body upstairs to look for her mentor, found her in her room with her head buried inside a cabinet on the floor.
"Eda?" She called out for her.
"Ouch!" She heard her wail in pain. Apparently her voice startled her and she hit her head on the top of the cabinet "Jeez, knock first next time kiddo"
"You don't knock on doors" Luz said, amused
"That's a lesson for you, it's too late for me" She got up and stretched, making her bones crack "Anyways, I called you because we have something to deliver, and by 'we' I mean you" She said
"A delivery? I thought Lilith didn't let you have those anymore"
"It's nothing harmful so she let it slide" She went to her bed and picked up a package that was on top of it "Here, take this to the blights"
That name made her brain short-circuit
"Th-The Blights?" She sputtered "But, why?! You hate Odalia!" Luz still remembered their last interaction in the mayor's parade last year.
"This doesn't have anything to do with her. Her son Edric is back in town for a while, that is for him"
"But I doubt that Odalia would want you delivering anything to her children"
"Which is why you need to deliver this without her knowing" Eda said while tossing the package to her.
"How am I supposed to do that? We agreed on no magic for this stuff!" She whispered in case Lilith was nearby "Can't you just text Edric to come and grab it?"
"He asked for this personally so I don't have his number. I could ask Lily for it, but I'd doubt she'd give it to me"
Luz groaned, it did make sense.
"Come on kid, be creative. I'm sure you can find a way" A mischievous glint appeared in her eyes "You could always try to use your charms to get past the gates, I'm sure that tiny Blight would like that"
There it was, the reason why she was so uncomfortable with this. Her relationship with Amity Blight had been a rollercoaster since day one: First she saved her from some bullies, then they became sort of friends, then she grew cold and distanced herself, then Luz saved her from a magical monster after accidentally reading her diary, then she started flirting with her, and lastly she had asked Luz on a date. In retrospect, all of that sounded like it was from a teen romance novel, with her being the new girl in town who managed to pull the rich hottie. The problem with that narrative is that Luz (like an idiot) did not realize that she was being flirted with, and once she found out she panicked and told her no (like a big idiot). By the time Eda had convinced her to go for it she had found out that Amity had a new girlfriend, which actually made her feel worse.
It had been two months since that and things had been somewhat awkward around Amity. They had remained as friends, even though they had stopped interacting like before, but there was this feeling of nervousness each time she talked to her.
"You know I won't do that Eda, she has a girlfriend"
"And? She has two hands, doesn't she?" The old woman teased with a grin.
"EDAAA!" She screamed and a blush erupted in her cheeks.
"Calm down kid, it was a joke" Eda's tone told her she wasn't sorry.
"Can I not do this?" She pleaded.
"Well is either this or spend the entire day cleaning the house with my sister, pick your choice" Eda shrugged.
Luz had to agree, having an awkward conversation sounded better than house chores.
Outside of the Blight manor / 40 minutes later
Luz was beginning to regret her decision, the gates to the Blight manor stood before her but she did not know what to do. She couldn't risk ringing the bell because Odalia might hear that, and she knew that she really shouldn't try to sneak around, the last thing she needed was to get arrested. She was considering throwing a stone to the window when she heard a familiar voice.
"You know, if you wanted to come by you should have called me" Amity spoke from behind her.
"Amity!" She said happily.
Maybe they were in an awkward spot (or maybe they weren't and Luz was imagining things, that had happened to her before) but she was happy to see her friend, maybe she could help her with her situation. She turned around to face her and-
Purple.
"Uhmm, Luz? Is everything ok?" Amity asked after a few seconds of her silence. She would have loved to answer but her mouth refused to cooperate.
Amity had gotten a haircut and she dyed it again. Instead of her minty mane with brown roots now she had purple hair with a high ponytail and an undercut, it gave her a distinguished air but that wasn't everything. However that wasn't the only thing that changed, her eyes were shining with joy, her steps had an extra bounce to them, her face was calm, and her attitude was gleeful, a huge difference with the gloomy behavior that she always had. Even her clothes had changed; She had ditched her usual skirts and dresses for black working pants and a brown aviator jacket. Overall, she was stunning and Luz's brain was having a tough time processing it.
"Ok, you are starting to worry me" She walked forward and that action managed to snap her back.
"Sorry! It's just that… your hair is different…" She said the last part way too fast.
"Oh, this? I wanted to have some change with my appearance and since my grades are good my mom allowed it. But never mind all that, why are you here? If you wanted to hang out you could have asked me" She said
"Oh, uhhm" She debated on whether to tell her the truth or not "Actually I kinda need your help. I'm here on an errand. Eric ordered something from Eda and I need to deliver it but I doubt Odalia would let me in, can you give this to him? It would mean a lot" She said while holding the package
Her mood immediately darkened.
"Is that like one of those pranks that he used to pull on us when we were kids?" She asked with a frown.
"Nooo, it's not-" She stopped once she realized that she did not know if this was part of a prank "I'm… perfectly sure it's not something dangerous"
*Hmph* "Fine, but if this blows up I'm my face I'm blaming you for it" She took the package and looked at her "So, how have you been? We haven't talked that much since we came back from christmas break, you trying to avoid me or something?" She asked with a joking tone
"Oh nothing in particular, just busy studying and working that's all" She felt bad for lying to her, so she decided to tell her the truth "Also… I didn't want to bother you when you were with your girlfriend outside of school. How is she? She was called Leah right?"
Amity grimmanced upon hearing it.
"About that… we are not together anymore, so you don't need to worry about that anymore" She said with a weak smile.
"Oh Amity! I'm so sorry" She really felt like crap now.
"No, don't be! We ended in a good way, it's just that things did not work for us. I guess that her living in another town really made dating hard" She chuckled awkwardly "Wait… So the reason why you haven't been talking with me was because you were afraid of being a third wheel? Even though I'm single" She asked with a smile.
Luz laughed a little at that and they kept chatting in the door of her house, Edric's package forgotten. Luz thought that this felt nice.
Until a distinctive screech interrupted their talk. Luz looked up, in the sky there was something that she saw in her dream: A swirling pool made out of light and colors.
Hi guys! I'm kinda trying a new format here. Instead of having a huge chapter with several POVs I'm having a smaller chapter with just one POV, hopefully that'd make the chapters flow faster. I'm doing this because there has been more than one time where I had several POV/sections of a chapter done but I don't post it because the rest of the chapter isn't done, and that feels weird.
Changing subject, did you guys see the pilot/read the show bible that got leaked for TOH? That was sick, I wanna give my opinions on it so here is goes (Spoilers):
-I really do vibe that Lilith was supposed to be a teacher, even though I do not like her as a headmistress (bump is irreplaceable). I feel like we could have had this dynamic with the events of the show: Lilith being a teacher who's a part of the emperor's coven in order to recruit students (She also teaches), she uses her time there to spy on Luz to learn some more about her sister. Maybe with this dynamic we could've had a proper school drama.
-At the same time I do not like her as the kinda goofy antagonist they made her to be (she kinda took Wrath's role in the pilot), I think her place on the actual show makes the most sense.
-On the other hand I do not know how to feel about Eda's role. Being forced by the emperor to eventually betray Luz to cure her curse feels like too much angst to me. On the other hand, it is really cool to know that she had an aging curse and she could turn into a literal owl.
-The owl house felt like an actual hideout with the way they didn't enter by the front door but rather went down to Hooty's stomach. It feels like the house above is a facade to throw people off
-It is kinda disappointing how we gradually lost all of the demon-looking characters as the show went on, we never saw the same amount of monsters as we saw on ep one. All of the main characters were just elves while the demons were just in the background. It would have been better if the hexcrew had something extra, like a tail or horns, instead of just being plain witches
-Amity being in the human world is interesting and the fact that Luz fell first is so goddamn cute. I honestly do not know what I'd prefer anymore, I really do like the whole "Gay disaster" Amity but I do not think that we could have that if Luz fell first.
-On that note the fact that the human realm is so accessible to demons is weird. I do think that having more than one portal is great and Eda not being the only one who sells human garbage is funny, but why would the emperor want Luz when they could just open a portal and snatch a human? I think it would be great to have several portals but make them be really rare.
-Beta Hunter (I think his name was William) being a kid Belos is super freaky but also kinda cute, is a way to show that Luz could've saved from his beliefs, I can tell their interactions would've been funny
Ok well that's it, see you guys soon!
