"BIG" EUGENE HADLEY- CLANCY BROWN

Big Eugene's Furniture Depot. Haines, Alaska. The next day.

Early the next morning, Jesse jumped through the shower and then promptly broke out the coffee mix. The pervious evening had been a usual one for him: full of nightmares about his abuse at the hands of Jack Welker and his neo Nazi psycho fucks. Jesse had left the compound physically, but he felt like he was still there mentally. It made getting a good night's sleep easier said than done; which is a problem when your ass needs to start pounding the pavement looking for work.

Hence why he was going to need coffee and a lot of it. He still had plenty of seed money from Ed Galbraith, but twenty seven thousand bucks wouldn't last forever; especially in this economy. The last thing Jesse wanted to do was wait until he was flat broke before he started looking for a job. Jesse Bruce Pinkman was a lot of things, but a dumbass he was not. Luckily, Mitch had told him about a few places that were hiring in Haines. Plus, Ed Galbraith had prepared a resume for Eli Driscoll. It was nothing special, but it would be enough to land a blue collar job.

One was a roadkill removal company. Jesse had been around enough carcasses to last him a lifetime, so he was going to put off applying there for as long as possible. The other was a janitor position at the local high school. It didn't seem too hard and Jesse was usually good with kids, but he was worried that his trauma might spill out of him at some point and kids didn't need to be exposed to all the shit that he had been through. The 3rd and most promising option, was a job at a furniture store and factory hybrid.

After downing 3 cups of coffee, Jesse got dressed in his white sweater, since it was the nicest shirt that he owned, and got in his station wagon. He drove about a mile and half to Big Eugene's Furniture Depot. The store aspect was a decent size, but the factory side was bigger and attached to the left side of the store portion. Jesse parked his car and headed into the store. The place was stocked with all kinds of tables, chairs, couches, dressers, wardrobes, etc. You name it, they had it. As Jesse looked around, he saw a old man coming out of the back. He was a silver haired guy, sporting a jolly belly.

"Welcome to Big Eugene's, where all of your furniture needs will be met. I'm Big Eugene." The man said with a smile.

"Eli Driscoll, I'm here to buy some essential pieces...for my place. Also, I heard that you were hiring." Jesse said as he handed the business owner Eli's resume. Big Eugene took a few minutes to read it over. He didn't seem particularly impressed, but he didn't seem turned off either.

"Well Eli, it looks like there ain't a whole Hell of a lot your ass hasn't done." He said with a laugh as Jesse simply offered a shrug in return.

"I tried all that college shit, it didn't work out for me. I like working with my hands, yo." Jesse admitted, which wasn't a lie. He was more suited for hands on work. Back when he had tried to apply for a job at Arroyo Realty, he was pissed when they'd offered him some crummy mascot job instead of the sales position that he'd applied for. The truth was that he wasn't cut out for a desk job.

"Well, you're in luck because I don't need some desk boy. I need someone to work on the factory side of the business." Big Eugene said as he motioned for Jesse to follow him out of the storefront and into the factory side. In there, Jesse saw a warehouse of dudes and even a couple of ladies working carpentry. They were building chairs and bed frames, and dressers, and other such things by hand.

"You got any experience with wood working?" Big Eugene asked.

"Hell yeah, I took a woodworking class in high school, aced it too. It was the bomb, yo." Jesse answered as he was still amazed by how easy it was for him to work so much of the truth into his lies. It made him think of Krazy-8 when he'd first gotten into the drug game. Krazy-8 had once told him that the best kind of lie, was one where you could tell the truth. Because that way, no one could know for sure if you were lying or not.

"That's good enough for me. You can start tomorrow. Welcome to Big Eugene's." Big Eugene said as he gave Jesse a friendly slap on the back.

"Thanks Big Eugene, I promise you, you won't regret this." Jesse said with gratitude. Once Jesse had secured employment, he bought some essential furniture for his apartment. He found a plaid recliner chair, a king sized bed, (he ended up not getting a frame because he felt it was just a waste of money), and a dresser for his clothes.

"Since you're an employee Eli, we can give you an employee discount." Big Eugene said as he cut the cost of Jesse's purchase in half.

"Right on!" Jesse exclaimed with a grin as he made his purchases and with the help of Big Eugene, carried the furniture to his station wagon. As Jesse drove away from Big Eugene's, for the first time in a really, really, long time, he felt like he was finally in control of his life. He wasn't addicted to Meth, he didn't have Mr. White tricking him into doing his bidding, Jesse was living life in his own terms, even if he had to live that life as Eli Driscoll.
