It was time for bed, Lemmy had just set Larry down and was making his way over to their balcony to shut the curtains, leaving the room to only be lit by their lamp on the bedside table.
But just as he was about to, he noticed just how clear of a night it was and how much was visible from where he was standing. That was when he had an idea.
He turned around to look at Larry, who was standing inside of their rocking crib. Lemmy could see him standing on his tippy toes with his hands reaching up onto the railing and watching him with puppy dog eyes that were just barely peeking over.
As Lemmy walked over to him, the toddler reached his arms out to him and whined demandingly. Lemmy smiled at him, "Hey, Larry, before we go to sleep, wanna come outside to the balcony with me?" Larry smiled as he bounced up and down a little in agreement.
Lemmy tipped the crib towards himself, reached in, picked up Larry and lifted him out before setting him down on the floor. He walked over to the balcony door and opened it as Larry waddled after him. Upon catching up to him, Larry hugged Lemmy's waist and looked up at him with his signature big eyes, "Uppy?"
"Of course!" Lemmy picked him up and held him in his arms. Larry hugged him around his neck. Lemmy gently nuzzled him, "Aww, you're so sweet, Larry." Lemmy carried him outside to their balcony and sat down on a wooden chair with a soft red cushion with Larry sitting on his lap.
Lemmy smiled as he pointed off into the sky, "Look at that, Larry." Larry followed where he was pointing and saw what looked like a bright white circle with gray patches in the sky, he remembered Lemmy showing it to him before and in many storybooks as well. Larry tried to remember what it was, and once he did, he looked up at Lemmy, "Moon?" Lemmy smiled, "That's right, Larry! It is the moon!" He gently ruffled Larry's small and bushy mohawk, "But it's not just any moon, it's a full moon!" Larry tilted his head curiously, "What that?"
"The moon lights up differently every night. It starts off gone, then slowly fills up until it becomes full, like that!" Lemmy pointed at the moon to direct Larry's gaze, "After that, it slowly goes away bit by bit until it's empty again." Larry frowned at that last part, "But why?" Lemmy giggled, "You can't see it when it's empty, but after it's empty, it slowly starts filling up again. It happens over and over again." Lemmy then held out his finger and slowly moved it up and down in a repeating pattern, "Fills up, then empties. Fills up, and empties. The moon loves to do that over and over again."
Then Lemmy gently placed his hand on Larry's cheek and turned his head towards the moon before pointing at it, "And right now, it's full! That is when it is the most pretty." Larry stared up at it with wonder, "Ooooh…"
"I know, right? It's really bright this time! But it's not just the moon that makes the night sky so beautiful." Lemmy waved his hand across their view of the sky, "Look at all the stars, there's so many of them. Everywhere you look, you can see a bunch of them!" Larry looked around the sky and could see bright dots everywhere he looked, "L… Lights?" Lemmy giggled, "Sort of, they're not just lights. They are just like the Sun, the one we see during the day."
Larry's brows furrowed. The Sun? How could that be? They're so tiny! The toddler looked back up at Lemmy with a puzzled expression, "But… they're tiny." Lemmy shook his head with a grin, "Actually, they are not tiny, they are super big! They only look tiny because they are super far away."
Larry's eyes lit up as it clicked, "Ohh, cool!" Lemmy smirked, "Oh, it gets even better!" Lemmy turned Larry's attention back to the night sky and pointed at one of the larger and brighter dots, "See those bigger and brighter lights?" Larry nodded eagerly, "Uh huh! Those are super bigger stars!" Lemmy giggled, "Actually, no, they are not." Larry's excitement vanished, "Wha?" Larry pointed to one of the large dots in the sky, "But… bigger star!" Lemmy chuckled as he shook his head, "No, Larry, they are not stars at all. They are something even better."
Larry looked up at his brother with puzzled curiosity, "Better?" Lemmy nodded before he pointed to one of them, "The big and bright lights are not stars. They are galaxies!" Larry was stumped, he had never heard that word before. As such, he struggled to repeat the word, "Ga… wac… sees?" Lemmy beamed, "That's right, Larry! Do you know what a galaxy is?" Larry looked up at him before he sadly looked down and shook his head, "No… I don't…"
Lemmy placed a finger on Larry's chin and lifted his head up, "Cheer up, Larry, I can tell you what a galaxy is." Larry's sadness was replaced with curiosity. Seeing his change in expression, Lemmy went through with his word, "A galaxy is a far far away place. They are the kinds of places you would see whenever we go to dreamland!" Larry's eyes lit up, dreams, he knew that word, "Dreams?" Lemmy nodded, "Yeah! There's Sweet Sweet Galaxy, where the land is made of chocolate cake and candy!" Larry's eyes began to sparkle, "Really?"
"Yeah!" Lemmy raised a finger up, "But there's one thing that makes galaxies different from dreams." Larry's excitement returned back to curiosity as he looked back up at Lemmy. He tilted his head, waiting for Lemmy to say why. Lemmy gave him a cheery smile, "Galaxies are not dreams. They are real places!"
"What does that mean?" Larry muttered, with his words blending together. Lemmy placed a hand on Larry's cheek and gently rubbed it, "It means we can actually go there! We can eat chocolate cake in Sweet Sweet Galaxy! We can make sandcastles and play in the sand in Beach Bowl Galaxy! We can taste the best honey ever in Honeyhive Galaxy!" Larry's eyes lit up, he's had honey before and he loved it.
"But there's something even better! Floating out in space and everywhere around the galaxies are little floating colorful stars called star bits!" Larry tilted his head curiously, "Staw… bits?" Lemmy nodded, "Mhm! They are super sweet and sugary. They are said to taste like honey!" Lemmy closed his eyes, licked his lips and joyfully rubbed his belly as he thought about the super sweet taste, "So yummy!" Larry's mouth began to water at the thought, "Mmm…"
Giggling, Lemmy placed his hand on Larry's cheek, "It's not just those places, there are so many other galaxies we can go to as well!" He gently turned Larry's head towards the sky and pointed a finger at one particularly bright galaxy, "See that one there?" Larry nodded, "Uh huh."
"Ludwig told me that is where Toy Time Galaxy is, it's my favorite galaxy!" Larry's curiosity piqued upon hearing the familiar word 'toy', he knew it always had something to do with fun, "Toy?"
Lemmy nodded eagerly, "Yeah! It's a place made of giant toys and has many toys and play areas everywhere! A place with as much fun as you want! But the best part is the huge wooden toy train we can ride in!" Larry gasped excitedly, "Train?"
"That's right! It looks just like the train we have in the playroom, only bigger!" Lemmy pointed back at that galaxy in the sky, "And it's right there." Then he held his hand out across the whole view, "But not just there, all of the galaxies are beautiful. Each of them are waiting for us to come and visit one day."
Larry's eyes sparkled as he gazed at all the stars and the brighter galaxies in the sky in awe, "Wow…" A whisper was all the toddler could utter. If one were to look into his eyes, they would see the beautiful starry sky in the reflection.
Lemmy gazed off into the sky with Larry as he gently held him close, he was smiling at the very clear night, "It's very beautiful tonight. A full moon, lots of stars, and even galaxies. The universe is huge, so many places we can visit when we're older, and we'll do it together!" He looked back at Larry sitting on his lap, "What do you think, Larry? Does that sound like the best adventure in the whole wide world?" Larry looked back up at him and cheered, "Yeah!" Lemmy giggled giddily while he playfully ruffled Larry's mohawk, causing the toddler to also laugh adorably.
But then Lemmy remembered something else, "Oh, there's one more thing about stars, and it's a really special type of star." When Larry gave him his signature curious look, Lemmy elaborated, "They are very hard to find. But they move across the sky and have a bright sparkly tail behind them. We call them comets, or shooting stars."
"It moves?" Larry has never heard of a star that could move. Lemmy smiled and nodded excitedly, "Yeah, they move! Whoosh!" Lemmy made a playful sweeping gesture with his hands during that last part. Larry proceeded to copy his brother when he tried to follow along, "WoOOoo…" Lemmy giggled at Larry's attempt, finding it pretty adorable, "Yeah, Larry! Like that!" Larry smiled, "So they are special because they move?"
Lemmy half shrugged a shoulder, "Well, sort of. What makes them really special is the part where we make a wish." The toddler was once again looking up at him curiously, "Wish?" Lemmy nodded, "That's right. When we see a shooting star fly across the sky, we make a wish before it disappears, and it will come true!" Larry's eyes lit up, "Really?"
"Mhm! When you see a shooting star, quickly make a wish before it disappears, and it will come true one day!" Lemmy could see Larry's eyes sparkling with joy at the concept, but he wasn't finished yet. Lemmy raised a pointed finger, "But! There is only one rule for when you make a wish on a shooting star." Larry's excitement faded back to a puzzled expression. Seeing the toddler's curiosity, Lemmy continued, "Your wish has to be kept a secret. Don't tell anyone your wish. If you do, it will not come true."
Larry frowned, "If I say my wish, it no come true?" Lemmy nodded, "That's right, Larry, your wish has to be a secret. As long as you keep it a secret and not tell anyone, it will come true one day." He then smiled, "Once your wish does come true, that is when you are allowed to say it." Larry tilted his head slightly, "So… I say my wish after it come true?"
"Yes." Lemmy gave Larry a brief recap of the rule, all the while doing it in his cheery tone, "Don't tell anyone your wish, or else it won't come true. But once it comes true, then it's okay."
When Larry finally understood, he smiled and got excited, "I wanna wish!" Lemmy gently patted his head, "Now now, Larry, you can only do it when you see a shooting star in the sky, and they don't appear very often." He then added a bit more optimism, "But since it's a very clear night, if we're really lucky, we might actually see one!" Larry's eyes lit up at the possibility.
They both gazed at the sky for the next few minutes, with Lemmy telling Larry a lot of things about the various galaxies he knew of. But then something would stop Lemmy's words right in their tracks. He gasped before eagerly pointing up at the sky, "Larry, look! It's a shooting star!" Larry quickly looked at the part of the sky where Lemmy was pointing and saw a bright star moving across the sky with a bright bluish-white trail behind it. He could see the sparkles behind it like his brother said.
Lemmy swiftly but gently grabbed Larry's shoulders, "Quick, Larry! Make a wish before it disappears! Make it a really good one!" Larry opened his mouth to speak, only for Lemmy to quickly step in before he could, "Don't say it out loud! Otherwise it won't come true!" Larry obliges as both he and Lemmy gazed at the beautiful light moving gracefully across the sky in its cosmic journey. Both boys thought about their wish long and hard and kept going until the star vanished.
After it did, Larry silently stared at where it once was for a good 10 seconds, his sparkling eyes were filled with awe, he couldn't believe how beautiful it looked. "Wooow…" Lemmy finally broke the silence between them, "Did you make your wish, Larry?" Larry turned back to him and nodded with a grin, "Uh huh! I wish-"
"Ah ah ah! Remember, Larry, you have to keep your wish a secret." Lemmy then placed a finger to his mouth, "Shh. It's a secret." Larry mimicked his brother's action, "Shh. Secwet." He shut his eyes and smiled adorably. Then it was Lemmy's turn to mimic his brother, making the same face as Larry, "And I made my wish too!"
Larry opened his eyes and looked up at his brother, "What Lemmy wish for?" Lemmy snorted out a laugh while shaking his head, "Now, Larry, I have to follow the rules as well. I have to keep my wish a secret too if I want it to come true one day. It won't come true if I tell you what it is." Larry sadly hung his head, he really wanted to know what Lemmy's wish was.
Lemmy gently lifted Larry's head up to look him in the eyes and smiled warmly, "But what I can tell you is that my wish is very special. Just like you." Larry smiled, even though he couldn't know what Lemmy wished for, he at least knew that Lemmy's wish was a good one.
When Lemmy turned his attention back to the bright full moon in front of them, his eyes lit up as he remembered something, "You know, Larry, I just thought of something. I walked by Ludwig's room yesterday and heard a short, but beautiful song he was listening to." Larry's curious look returned once again, "A song?"
"Mhm. It's a song about the moon. It fits perfectly here. Lemmy looked down at Larry, "Wanna hear it?" Larry happily nodded as he bounced slightly on Lemmy's lap. Lemmy smiled as he pulled Larry closer to him. He cleared his throat and began to sing the short tune in a soft and gentle voice, as close to as he heard it as he could.
As he did, he looked out towards the moon as he held his hand out to it, "To the moon,"
He gently placed his hands on Larry's shoulders, "through the stars."
Lemmy looked back at him as he delicately placed a hand on the side of his head, "There we'll find a place to be."
He then moved his hand onto the top of Larry's eyes and slowly shut them, "Close your eyes,"
He placed his hand back on the side of Larry's head and stroked him tenderly, "all these wonders."
Lemmy placed his hand back on his closed eyes, "In the dark, we,"
He then slowly opened Larry's eyes again and placed his hand around the back of his head, "saw them shine."
Lemmy nuzzled his head as he gently rocked the toddler in a hug, "You and me…"
Larry smiled and closed his eyes as he hugged him back. Lemmy's short tune felt calming and soothing, he felt very safe in his big brother's arms.
"Did you like it, Larry?" Retaining his smile, Larry kept his eyes closed as he snuggled against his brother's body, "Mhm…" Lemmy pushed Larry's hair back before he gently kissed his little brother on the head and held him close, "I love you, Larry. I will always be there for my baby brother…" Larry hugged Lemmy even tighter as he leaned against him more, "I love you too…"
As the two of them went back to looking out at the sky, Lemmy still held him in his arms with Larry relishing every moment of it. Larry couldn't get enough of all the amazing places he learned. The land of chocolate cake and candy of Sweet Sweet Galaxy, the warm sandy beaches of Beach Bowl Galaxy, the tasty honey of Honeyhive Galaxy, and the giant wooden train in the toy filled lands of Toy Time Galaxy.
All of them sounded like places that were straight from the dreamland he visits every night, only that they were very real places. Larry gazed at all the bright galaxies he could see in the clear and cloudless night. His eyes once again sparkled and shined with wonder and awe as he took in the spectacular sight. During it, he had only one thought on his mind, he imagined he and Lemmy going on the best adventure in the whole wide world, where they will one day visit them all.
Here's hoping my wish comes true and I will stop procrastinating.
...
Aw dammit, I said it out loud...
Anyway, that's it for the second flashback. If you didn't want anymore flashback chapters, too bad! It's your own fault for not giving me feedback last time. This one took a while due to declining motivation, which has kind of always been a problem for me when writing stories. I mean, that was very much true for my old stories, I suppose some things never change.
Back to the flashback, I originally had this planned to be the final flashback where it would be placed near the end of the story. But I decided to move it to here because I feel like it fits better here.
The song Lemmy sang to Larry is from the video game "To The Moon", he overheard Ludwig listening to one of the trailers for the game. ("Trailer Theme - Part 2" in case you're curious.) That's right, in my cannon, Ludwig has played "To The Moon" at age nine.
(Do me a favour and don't tell ol' Luddy that I told you guys this, okay?)
One thing I would recommend is to listen to the beginning of it while reading the part where Lemmy sings it. Trust me, I think you'll like it.
By the way, the art from To The Moon is what inspired the cover image for this story! Just thought I'd throw that out there.
On the topic of motivation, it has declined a bit lately, but the reason is a bit different from normal this time around. I have other story ideas involving the main characters of this story, problem is they kind of require this story to be completed first and given how big it is, it likely won't be finished for a couple years. I mean, you try writing out like 50 3000 word chapters, see how long that's going to take!
But on the other hand, I do have a story idea that I have already started writing. So I figured my solution is that if I do go through with it, it will be set in an AU and therefore, not canon to this story. But this is just an idea I had from the other day. But it could still happen though!
As for the next few chapters, they are kind of scattered right now, so I'll need time to reorganize and think on how to make them play out. So expect to wait at least a week. Until then, enjoy this flashback!
Anyway, I gotta go make dinner, I'm hungry.
