In the morning, Jay was dropping Jayden off at school while Erin was at the district office catching up on some overdue paperwork.
Jay turned off the engine and smiled.
"Alright, have a great day at school, kiddo! Love you!" Jay said with a smile.
Jayden returned the smile and exited the truck.
The door slammed shut, and Jay's smile persisted.
Jayden hurried into the school as Jay looked on.
"5021 George?" Dispatch inquired.
Jay lifted his radio and replied.
"Go ahead," Jay transmitted.
"Possible assault at 103 South Roosevelt," Dispatch informed.
Jay exhaled and took a sip of his coffee.
"Copy that, I'm just a block away," Jay communicated back.
He grabbed his vest and headed towards the given address.
Upon arrival, Jay stepped out of the truck.
"Detective Halstead. Intelligence," Jay introduced himself.
Anna and Jake acknowledged and relayed the situation.
"Neighbors reported hearing shouting and the sound of things breaking. They called 911, and we were dispatched to investigate," Jake detailed.
Jay nodded and drew his gun.
"Have you entered the premises yet?" Jay inquired.
Anna and Jake shook their heads with a sigh.
"Alright, follow my lead and stay behind me," Jay instructed.
They nodded and positioned themselves behind Jay.
"CHICAGO PD!" Jay announced loudly.
Silence filled the room as the officers entered.
Anna headed towards the lounge while Jay ascended the stairs.
"CHICAGO PD!" Jay called out again.
He checked each room until he was suddenly grabbed.
In the ensuing struggle, Jay managed to incapacitate the assailant.
The attacker hit the floor, unconscious.
"Detective, are you alright?" Jake checked in.
Jay looked up and confirmed with a nod.
"Take him to the 21st. I need to clear the rest of the house," Jay stated.
Anna agreed and assisted in lifting the attacker.
"Rest of the house is clear. Coming out." Jay radioed.
Jay completed one final sweep before leaving the house. Shortly after, the team arrived with Hank taking the lead.
"Did you catch the case?" Hank inquired.
Jay nodded. "Patrol was called to the scene after neighbors reported hearing smashing and shouting. I was called in as well," he explained.
Hank gave a nod and peered into the house. "Did you clear the house?" he asked.
"Yep! It's empty, looks like it's been abandoned for months, and there's a breadknife missing" Jay confirmed.
Hank surveyed the rooms. "Alright, let's start a grid search and talk to the neighbors who reported the incident," he directed.
The team dispersed in various directions.
Erin and Jay approached the neighbor's door.
"Are you considering the job offer in New York?" Erin queried.
Jay leaned against the wall, exhaling deeply. "I'm not sure. New York isn't really my scene," he confessed.
Erin smirked. "What?" Jay questioned.
"You're cute," Erin said with a playful smirk.
Jay chuckled just as they heard movement behind the door.
"CHICAGO PD!" Erin announced loudly.
The door swung open, revealing a young woman.
"How can I help you?" the woman, Millie, asked.
"Detectives Halstead and Lindsay. May we come in?" Erin requested.
Millie nodded, stepping aside. "Of course.
Thank you, ma'am," Jay said with a grateful smile.
Millie cast a glance outside before closing the door behind them.
"What's happening?" Millie inquired.
Erin and Jay surveyed the house before speaking.
"You called 911 last night?" Erin began.
Millie nodded with a sigh.
"Yes, that was a mistake," Millie admitted.
Erin glanced at Jay.
"Are you certain? The operator mentioned you seemed quite panicked on the call," Jay questioned.
Millie nodded, standing up.
"I had a rough night. I broke up with my boyfriend and wasn't thinking clearly," Millie explained.
Erin and Jay acknowledged with a smile.
"Apologies for the inconvenience," Jay offered with a smile.
Millie nodded, escorting Erin and Jay to the door.
As the door slammed shut, Jay reached for his radio.
"5021 George?" Jay called in.
Erin paused, turning to Jay.
"Go ahead with your traffic," Dispatch responded.
Jay eyed the house number and transmitted.
"Dispatch a few officers to 103 South Roosevelt. We might have a suspect," Jay communicated.
"Copy that. Backup is en route," Dispatch confirmed.
Erin, puzzled, faced Jay.
"Millie was bluffing. When I stood up, I saw a blood-stained knife on the table—the same one missing from Jane Doe's residence," Jay revealed.
Erin nodded, her smile firm.
"I'll loop in Voight," Erin concurred.
Erin headed towards the truck to contact her sergeant.
After Erin and Jay were interviewing Millie.
"Why am I here? I didn't do anything wrong!" Millie exclaimed.
Erin and Jay sat down and began.
"Really? Then how do you explain this blood-stained breadknife found at your place?" Jay inquired.
Millie glanced at the photo and leaned back.
"I-I don't even know what a breadknife is! Why would I steal one?" Millie protested, untruthfully.
Erin sighed and responded.
"Millie, you're not doing yourself any favors by lying," Erin remarked.
Millie looked up defiantly.
"I am not lying!" Millie insisted.
Erin and Jay exchanged glances, and Millie demanded.
"Before this goes any further, I want a lawyer!" Millie declared.
Erin and Jay nodded and rose to their feet.
"Alright, we can arrange that, but be warned, once a lawyer is involved, we can't offer you any deals," Jay cautioned.
Millie crossed her arms and averted her gaze.
"We'll get that lawyer for you," Erin murmured as they left the interrogation room.
Jay exhaled deeply, the weight of the situation settling in. "A confession's not going to happen now," he lamented.
Erin offered a comforting hand on his back, whispering, "Hold it together." Acknowledging her support, Jay gave a nod and proceeded to the bullpen.
"How did it go?" inquired Antonio. With a collective sigh, Erin and Jay continued to their desks. "She invoked her right to counsel just as we were uncovering the truth," Jay explained.
Understanding the setback, Antonio let out a resigned sigh.
Adam chimed in, "Isn't there a way to continue the interrogation?" Both Erin and Jay shook their heads. "Grilling can be endless, and it's not a guaranteed method," Erin clarified.
Adam, registering the complexity, sighed in agreement.
"We got another assault. This time the body didn't leave the scene..." Hank responded.
The team sprang into action and hurried downstairs.
Erin and Jay were the first to arrive at the scene and exited the truck.
"What's the situation?" Jay inquired.
Roman led the team inside the house and briefed them.
"We arrived, and the perpetrator had fled before we could apprehend them, and that's when we discovered her..." Roman detailed.
The team glanced at the body and let out a collective sigh.
Hank knelt down and recognized it as the same location where the previous victims had been shot.
"The modus operandi is identical. Gunshot wounds to the neck and chest..." Hank observed.
Jay examined the body and exhaled deeply.
"Are we dealing with a serial killer?"
Hank stood and affirmed with a nod.
"That's the conclusion..." Hank confirmed.
Hank addressed his team with determination.
"Prepare for a stakeout. We need to apprehend this murderer..." Hank declared with resolve.
The team acknowledged and headed towards their vehicles.
As the night progressed, Jay was in his truck, drinking his coffee.
He lifted his radio and reported.
"I got nothing from this spot..." Jay communicated.
"Copy that!" came Adam's reply over the radio.
Jay took another sip of his coffee when suddenly, there was a knock on the window.
"Pardon me. Officer?" a voice whispered.
Jay turned to the stranger and was abruptly struck, slamming against the dashboard.
His coffee spilled across his uniform, and he lost consciousness.
The assailant opened the door and dragged Jay from the truck.
Jay hit the ground, arms outstretched.
The assailant began to pull Jay away when Jay came to his senses.
Realizing he was no longer in his truck and his radio was out of reach, Jay cried out in desperation.
"NO! NO!" Jay yelled.
Jay tried reaching for his radio and kept struggling.
The assailant Walked over and knocked Jay's head against the ground.
Jay stopped his struggle and fell unconscious.
The assailant pulled Jay up and stepped on his stomach.
The assailant Then undressed Jay from his uniform and threw his gun and badge away.
The assailant pulled Jay towards the pickup truck and cuffed his hands, before shoving him inside.
Jay was now cuffed and he was still unconscious.
The assailant Slammed the door shut and drove off.
Dun Dun...
