Episode 8: "We are the Metrons!"

Captain's log: Stardate 58298.5 - Based on a record in the Argos' database, were are attempting to establish First Contact with a species known as: the Metrons. In the Argos Universe they were a non-corporeal species that was uninterested in contact with other species. We don't know if the inhabitants of their planet are the same as the Metrons from the Argos' universe.

Metron System - USS Enterprise - Bridge

"Report," commanded Captain Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace.

"Sensors detect a large network of satellites in the system, especially in in the vicinity of the second planet," reported Commander Stonn, a Vulcan. "There appear to be a large number of Ion reactors powering their technology. Analysis indicates it is of a similar technological level as our own."

"Telepathy?" Asked Starbuck

"We are not detecting any telepathic waves in the system," replied Lieutenant 1 of 20, a Borg Communications officer who was originally Talosian.

"Bring us into orbit around the second planet," commanded Starbuck.

"Aye Captain," replied Lieutenant Klelia. He was a Tarquinian, which was a Vulcan who had rejected logic.

Once the ship was in orbit around the planet, Starbuck turned to her communications officer: "Open a channel."

"We will comply," replied 1 of 20. "Hailing frequencies open."

"This is Captain Thrace on the Starship Enterprise. We represent the United Federation of Planets, a multi-species organization. We wish to establish peaceful contact with your people."

Suddenly, an abstract pattern filled the view-screen.

"We are the Metrons!" Said a voice from the screen.

"I send you greetings from all the member worlds of the Federation," replied Starbuck.

"What is the purpose of your contact with us?" asked the Metrons.

"We wish to establish friendly relations, trade resources and perhaps eventually offer you membership in our federation," explained Starbuck. "May we come down to your planet to discuss this?"

"Negative!" Replied the Metrons. "We will send a representative to you. We have teleportation technology. Our representative will be appearing shortly."

With a flash, the Metron representative appeared on the bridge. He had the appearance of a human male, with blonde hair and blue eyes.

"Greetings, I am Melko. I speak for the Metrons," said the man.

"I greet you Melko in the name of the United Federation of Planets," said Starbuck, as she rose from her chair, walked over and shook his hand.

"You are more than one people?" Observed Melko.

"We are a multi-species society," explained Starbuck. "I am of a species called Human. My first officer, Mister Stonn is Vulcan. My Helmsman, Lieutenant Klelia, is Tarquinian. My Navigator, Lieutenant Toma is Medeusan. My Security Officer, Lieutenant Kalven is Cylon and our Communications Officer, 1 of 20 is Borg. Let us adjourn to a conference room where we can talk more comfortably."

"That would be acceptable," replied Melko.

Starbuck stepped back to her chair, pushed a button on the arm of the chair and said: "Doctor Leptus, Councilor Leek and Yeoman Six, please report to the Conference Room." She then turned her officers: "Mister Stonn, 1 of 20, you will join us. Mister Kalven, you have the Con."

When they arrived in the Conference room, The Doctor and Councilor were already seated at the table. Yeoman Six, stood by the replicator, ready to see to the needs of everyone in the room. Her pregnancy was just starting to show. But she still wore the mini-dress version of the uniform.

"Can I get you anything to drink?" Offered Yeoman Six.

"Ambrosia for me," said Starbuck.

"Same here," agreed Doctor Leptus, a Tarquinian

"Me too," agreed Councilor Leek, a Human.

"Tarqalian Tea would be my preference," announced Stonn.

"Water is all that we require," stated 1 of 20.

"I am unfamiliar with most of those," said Melko.

"Ambrosia is an drink containing alcohol," explained Starbuck. "We find it relaxing. However, Vulcans, like Mister Stonn, do not like the inhibition lowering effects of alcohol. So he prefers a non-alcoholic tea. And 1 of 20, being Borg prefers plain water. What would you like to drink?"

"I believe I will try this ambrosia of yours," replied Melko.

Once Yeoman Six had dispensed the drinks and the Metron had had a chance to try the Ambrosia, he proclaimed: "This is pretty good!"

"Ambrosia is but one of many things we have to offer," said Starbuck.

"Indeed, many of our worlds are poor in some resources, while rich in others," observed Commander Stonn.

"This is one of the many benefits or our joining together into a single Federation," added Councilor Leek.

"And you would offer to trade these things with our people?" asked Melko.

"Not just resources," replied Starbuck. "All our member worlds also share our technologies with each other. We have the scientists off all our worlds working together to advance our knowledge."

"Thus far, your Federation sounds enticing," mused Melko. "What is the down side?"

"We have requirements for membership," explained Starbuck. "We require a certain amount of social progress of out members. For example, we don't except members who practice slavery, not even with Artificial Intelligences."

"We also require a tolerance of diversity between our members," added Stonn. "For example, some of our member species were artificially created, and some of our species are telepathic."

"Who here is telepathic?" asked Melko.

"Mister Stonn's people are touch telepaths," explained Starbuck. "They can't use their telepathy without touching. Before she joined the Borg, 1 of 20 was a Talosian, and all of them are quite powerful telepaths."

"But being Borg, we are all one group mind connected by a subspace signal," added 1 of 20. "And that could also be considered a form of telepathic communication."

"Are your people telepathic?" asked Doctor Leptus.

"No. But we are telekinetic," replied Melko.

"You can move things with your mind?" asked Starbuck.

The Metron responded by making his drink rise up off the table.

"It's a useful talent for holding multiple tools at once and reaching far things," confided Melko.

"How powerful are you people with this talent?" asked Doctor Leptus.

"It varies," replied Melko. "The weakest can only lift as much as they can with their hands and only one object at a time. The most powerful could grab your ship in orbit and stop it."

"And where do you fit on this scale?" queried Starbuck.

"Somewhere in the middle," answered Melko. "In this, I am about average."

What followed was a briefing where they laid out the history of the Federation, benefits of membership and requirements thereof. When it was concluded, Melko said: "Thank you for the information and invitation. I will relay it to my people. But I have to warn you now that most of my people are very insular, not at all interested in exploring outside our system. I don't think they will be interested in joining your federation. However, there are a few outliers, like myself who would be interested in exploring the universe. Do you think we might be able to travel with you?"

"I'm sure you would be welcome amongst us," said Starbuck.

"And with the Talosian learning machines you would be able to obtain starfleet training in a relatively short time," mused Stonn.

"That's great!" gushed Melko. "I will just go report to my superiors and return shortly."

"We will wait until we hear back from you," said Starbuck.

Captain's log: Stardate 58299.4 - As it turns out Melko was the only Metron willing to join our crew. The Metron are not interested in join the Federation at this time. However, they are open to trade. Any ships wishing to trade with them are required to approach no closer than orbit, where transporters will be used to beam good to and from them.
