Five was walking through the woods, close to the cabins. It was beginning to get dark outside, and they seemed rather calm for once.
"Hey, uh, excuse me," a voice called out to them. The guitarist paused before turning around. A familiar blonde actress stood behind them with an innocent smile.
"What do you want, Melaine?" Five asked, their tone blunt and slightly rude.
However, Melaine didn't seem to be phased by their tone. "Well, if you can help me with learning the names of people here," the actress began, "then we may both be able to-"
"That's why you came out here?" Five interrupted bluntly, raising an eyebrow. "To get my help with names?" At her eager nod, they thought about it. "And why would you want my help?" they continued.
"Because you seem like you know people, Four!"
"I do not- you know what, fine," they grumbled in annoyance. "My name is Five."
"Flynn?"
"You know, the number?" the guitarist prompted.
"You're a number?" Melaine gasped.
"Wha- no, I'm a person."
Confessional - Five
"I'm starting to think she picked the wrong person to help her." Five leaned back in the confessional, looking annoyed. "I am not a people person."
"Then why is your name a number?"
"It's a nickname," Five replied. They were starting to get a bit uncomfortable with all the questions. "You…do know what a nickname is, right?"
"Oh..okay," Melaine nodded, furrowing her brow together in understanding.
"Okay, there, now you know my name," the guitarist said. "So I'll just leave it at that. Nice talking to you."
"Wait! You're just...leaving?"
"I don't know people as well as you think I do."
"Do you know someone who might?" she asked, and that made Five pause for a moment.
Why were they even helping her? What did they have to benefit from this? For all Five knew, Melaine would forget all about this in the morning, as though this whole conversation never happened.
But she seemed like she was determined to get to know everyone's names, which, if Five were being honest, they were relieved about. But they'd already been through two challenges and one elimination ceremony. Maybe it was too late, the guitarist mused. That'd be a shame.
"Um…hello?" Melaine's voice interrupted their train of thought. "Do you know someone who can help? I can wait until the morning, but…" she trailed off before letting out a couple of sniffles. "I'm worried they'll boot me next! Please, you have to help me!" she sounded so desperate at this point.
Five let out a sigh. "Fine. I do know someone." They didn't hear Melaine let out a sigh of relief or that she had murmured something. "Follow me."
Five opened the door to the not-girls' side of the Frogs' cabin. Caleb seemed to be out and about as well, and Mitchell let out a yawn as the door opened.
"Five?" Mitchell groaned as he sat up on his bunk. "What's going on?"
"She needs your help," Five answered, as though that gave the thief every answer he was asking for.
"Who needs my help? And with what?" The thief continued, sounding slightly annoyed at the vagueness of the guitarist's responses.
"Hi Michael!" Melaine piped up from behind Five. His attitude changed slightly, a smile forming on his face as opposed to the previous annoyance he had been feeling.
"Well hey yourself," he greeted with a tired wink, not bothering to correct her at that moment.
"Well, if you two are about to just go ahead and start with your little one-on-one name to person class," Five commented dryly. "Then I'm heading back out."
"You're heading back out?" Mitchell blinked. "I'm pretty sure there isn't an idol yet."
The guitarist just shrugged in response. "I'd prefer to just take my leave now." They turned and headed out of the cabin, leaving the thief and the actress by themselves.
"Alright then," Mitchell sighed as Five walked out.
"Bye Five!" Melaine called out.
Although Five was already out of earshot, if they had been around, they'd know she'd finally gotten someone's name right…
I was considering against doing a minisode after episode 2 before inspiration struck. Melaine has been a character I've been struggling with so this is hopefully going to help resolve that problem in future episodes. Speaking of future episodes, episode 3 is in progress, it has just been on pause due to exam season. But now that I'm done with exams, hopefully episode 3 can continue to be smooth-sailing during progress.
