AUTHOR'S NOTE: The original show did not state where exactly this death took place. Since the victim is German I decided to set it in Germany.

The next file has a drawing of a fish, and the words "INCIDENT 0105071985" on it.

Ruby: "Looks like next we have incident 0105071985".

Shannon: "That incident involves a man trying to live like a fish if I recall correctly… ah, yes."

The image on the file depicts a man lying down on the sand near the edge of a lake, clad in a teal-coloured suit.

Ruby: "The body temperature of most fish can fluctuate along with their environment, but humans are more fragile in that regard…"

Zoom in.

We open to see a bald man clad in a yellow shirt and brown trousers. He appears to be in a workshop of sorts. Scattered around him are tools and pieces of a teal-coloured material.

Date of Incident: 5 July, 1985

Location of Incident: Bad Zwischenahn, West Germany

As the video begins the man is seen flapping his arms.

Ruby: (Narrating) "This here is Dalph Smith. He's a German librarian with a serious fetish. For, like, fish."

Another shot shows Dalph wearing a pair of goggles and holding a fish in his right hand.

Dalph: "Der Fisch." (The fish.)

Next Dalph is seen using a stencil to help him cut out segments from a large piece of material on one of the workshop's desks.

Ruby: (Narrating) "He wanted to be as close to the fish as possible. To swim like them."

Dalph is seen admiring a helmet of sorts made out of the material he was using. It has holes for his eyes and mouth but covers the rest of his head. He opens and closes his mouth while admiring it.

He is then seen inspecting a new piece of material. Nearby is a book open to an illustration of a spandex suit. He starts cutting a new piece out of the material.

Ruby: (Narrating) "To help him in this dream the amateur ichthyologist went so far as to create, like, his own fish suit."

Dalph is now seen glueing pieces of the material together, using latex as his adhesive.

Ruby: (Narrating) "He took an old waterbed, cut it up and glued it into something he called 'the merman'."

A final shot of the workshop shows Dalph donning the head of his suit before giving the camera a double thumbs up.

We then abruptly cut to a grassy hill overlooking a lake. Dalph has stripped down to a white tank top and a black pair of shorts with a white stripe on the side. His sandals off to the side, he begins climbing into the fish suit.

Ruby: (Narrating) "Dalph couldn't wait to take this thing on its, like, maiden voyage."

Soon enough Dalph has finished putting the fish suit on, the teal material covering almost his whole body except for his eyes and mouth. The suit has no visible arms but rather fins projecting out from its side, and the legs are joined and end in a tail. He starts hopping towards the lake.

Ruby: (Narrating) "Once the suit was on he headed down to the water. But it was like, slow going, and he quickly started to overheat. Shanny, analysis."

Back to Shannon in the office.

Shannon: "All living beings produce heat internally, and dissipate that heat to the environment to maintain a stable body temperature."

A CGI shot of cells dividing and producing heat is shown.

Shannon: "The metabolism conducted by all living cells generates heat as a byproduct. That heat has to be removed from the body, normally by radiation, to prevent it from destroying the careful balance necessary for survival."

A new CGI shot of the human body is shown, zooming into the skin to reveal the hairs, sweat glands and associated structures.

Shannon: "To help remove unwanted heat, the human body possesses between two and four million sweat glands, located just beneath the skin. When they detect excess heat in the body they produce sweat, which is secreted onto the surface. When this sweat evaporates, it takes the heat with it, cooling the body."

Back to the office. Shannan has a quick drawing she has scribbled on her tablet showing the suit trapping heat within Dalph's body,

Shannon: "Now… Dalph here has subjected himself to a double whammy. The suit is basically acting as a barrier - the water molecules cannot penetrate the suit and take their heat with them, and the heat can't radiate away. So the heat is effectively trapped in his body, allowing it to build up to dangerous temperatures. If the temperature outside was cool, that maybe could have saved him."

More shots of Dalph hopping down to the lake are shown.

Ruby: (Narrating) "Unfortunately for Dalph it was a scorching 97 degrees Fahrenheit - that's 36.1 degrees Celsius - outside. Just a few seconds after he took off for the lake, the first symptoms of hyperthermia began to kick in."

Shannon: "The first symptoms you'll feel are painful heat cramps, and then it proceeds to heat prostration."

By now Dalph has reached the lake's sandy bank. He is now hopping slower and also bending over from exhaustion.

Shannon: "Your attention will be thrown off, you'll begin to feel delirious, lose your sense of balance, and then heatstroke will arrive as the finisher."

At this point, Dalph kneels down before collapsing into the sand.

Shannon: "If you get to this stage you are probably going to die unless you cool down rapidly."

Dalph by now is desperately attempting to pull himself to the lake. He is about six and a half yards (six metres) away from the water's surface.

Ruby: (Narrating) "Normally, it would take you about, like, three hours to reach the point of heatstroke, but thanks to the combined effects of the hot day, the fish suit and the energy Dalph exerted, he got there in less than fifteen minutes. With the lake's edge tantalisingly close…"

Dalph now tries to roll to the lake, but his movements are getting weaker with every passing second.

Ruby: (Narrating) "...his core body temperature redlined at, like, 108°F (42.2°C)."

With Dalph now only around two and a half feet (two metres) away from the water, he spasms a bit before going completely limp.

Ruby: (Narrating) "I guess he got his wish in the end. He found out what it felt like to be a fish… out of water."

WAY TO DIE #606

WET DREAM

Back to the Sharuby couple in their office.

Shannon: "Honestly, Ruby-Tuesday, that fish suit looked so tacky."

Ruby: "Yeah. Why couldn't Dalph have designed it after a cooler fish? Like a shark of some sort?"

Shannon: "I guess we'll never be able to find out. Next file, please. My turn to narrate."

Ruby nods, marking the file and wheeling over to get the next one.
