Hello, my loves! First things first, thank you to my girls wwechristina, Tm12Brady & GoldenGirl1920 for the lovely reviews and inspiration! Love you all!
Now, let's find out what's going on with Phoenix! These chapters will not be as long as the other as I really want to focus on these relationships on the days Phoenix is out. Also, just an FYI, I've written some references about a Det. McKenzie in a few chapters already (including a hidden one in the First Date chapter) and there will be one here. Let's just say...if you know, you know. LOL! Now, let's start this mini section off! Enjoy!
The Coma - Part One
The Diamond Building
After quickly dressing, Cherry and Drew raced to the Diamond building. They came in, Kevin greeting them at the door. Cherry immediately asked, "Where's Alyssa?" He explained, I found your contact with the police department, Det. McKenzie. He and his wife are going to keep her until her mom can be found or we're in a position to watch her again. Poor kid is scared to death, but they seem like a sweet couple."
Sheamus came up to them, more upset than Drew had ever seen him. He asked, "Has there been any improvement?" Sheamus sat down, his back turned to Drew and cradling his face in his hands, "No. She's...she's screaming. Lady is in there trying to do that psychiatry mumbo jumbo stuff." Drew lapped his hand on his shoulder, "Hey, come on, mate. Ya know she's strong."
Sheamus said, turning to face his best friend, "Drew, ya have known me a long time. Half my life. Yer family is my family. My family is yours, so ya know I don't scare easily." Drew smiled a bit. "Yer fine. And she's tough as hell." Sheamus' voice quivered, "I'm scared, fella." Sheamus' voice usually boomed. Not now. The woman he loved was in pain or something worse. And he was powerless to help her.
As Drew and Sheamus were talking, Cherry went into the bedroom and joined Lady Christina, who was sitting next to Christine. She was lying on the bed with her eye open in a glazed over and comatose state. Cherry exclaimed, upset at seeing her friend like this, "Holy shit! Jesus! Lady, what's going on?" Lady shook her head, "Well, I really don't know. Sheamy said she was screaming. But this seems deep. I've never seen anything like this."
Lady looked down at Christine. Her blue-green eyes had lost the sparkle. They looked distant and lifeless. Lady whispered, holding her limp jeweled right hand, "Come on, honey. Whatever it is, we're here. All of us." She looked at Sheamus in the doorway barely keeping it together and said, "You got a wonderful guy here who loves you. You got us girls. Cherry and Drew are getting married soon. You know you gotta pick on him. And I have some news I need you to hear."
She looked over at Drew standing in the doorway. He only shook his head and sighed loudly. He walked over to the bed, leaning towards Christine, "Ya know ya gotta mess with me. It's yer job. And ya haven't even started yet." He walked over at Cherry, who was having a hard time processing that her best friend was in such a state. She gave his hand a squeeze, "Go on and be with Sheamy. He needs you right now."
Drew nodded, leaving the bedroom and going to the balcony where the Irishman was. Drew only sat next to him, his eyes looking out to the Nashville downtown below them. Drew said, "I remember when Christine decided ta buy this building. We thought she was crazy. And, she was like so happy. Just ta fuck with her, I said I wanted a pinball machine and Pacman. She got them." Sheamus acknowledged what Drew was saying by nodding his head.
Drew put his arm around him, "Look, whatever is going on. She's gonna come out better. Ya know it and I know it." It was then Sheamus got up, his blueish eyes red from crying, "I dunno. That's what hurts, fella. The fact that she's like that and I'm helpless." Drew shook his head, "Hey, don't say that." Sheamus yelled, "Well, I'm saying it! I'm afraid, fella! I can't lose her! I can't have her not by my side! I'll chop off my bloody arm ta make her better! Hell, both arms! I'll give up ten years of my life! Twenty! Hell, I'll give up my whole life." Sheamus quit talking.
Drew said, "Stop that talk. Yer not going anywhere. She's not going anywhere. If there's one thing I know, Death ain't ready fer Phoenix. Heaven won't know what ta do and Hell's afraid she'll take it over." Drew tried to laugh, but he was worried about her too. For all the years they knew each other, Drew and Sheamus were the closest of friends. Drew was still silent as he embraced his friend, telling him that his girl was going to be alright.
It was a place she never thought she'd see again. It was the bad dream she thought she'd never have again. Young Christine was always the first to crack a joke or make everyone laugh. Most of her life was like that. And yet it was all shattered one day when she was twenty years old. People argue and say nasty things when they argue. Rarely it's ever meant to do anything but make the other person angry.
And yet when the young twenty-year-old argued with her mom about not going to see her father in the hospital, Christine said in her anger, "Who cared if I don't go today! I don't want to see my father!" She went out with her friends as her mom went to visit at the hospital. When she got home that evening, the phone was ringing off the hook.
Next thing Christine knew, there were fire trucks and ambulances, news trucks and police officers. A shooting at the hospital. Not just a shooting. A massacre. Over sixty dead and at least two hundred injured. And two of the deceased were her parents. Her mother's body was found in the doorway of her father's room. She had been trying to keep the gunman from entering the room.
For the next five years, the trials and lawsuits were draining on the young girl emotionally and mentally. But it struck a nerve. It lit a spark. She quit her job in retail to get a job helping out those needed it. She went for police training, excelling on all her required training. She was set to graduate at the top of the class. Then that stepped into her life. A man named Adam Ridge. A man at first she thought loved her, but only set her up to fail.
Back at the diamond building, Cherry and Lady Christina still held vigil around their friend. Cherry sighed, "Come on, girl. Wake up. I need my gal to bust Drew's balls! I need to hear you call him McInFart. Or dork. Or doofus. Or just any name you want to call him!" Cherry couldn't hold it in any longer, she wept silently.
Lady Christina tried to smile and patted Cherry's back, looking over at Kevin, who sat next to her, "She's gonna be OK. Come on, Christine! I need to hear your strange reasoning why we're such a great team. You know! All three of our names start with C-H, so that means we're awesome.." Kevin said, "Lass. Ya gotta get up. Who's gonna nag me about my suits? Or bucking my authority?"
Just then, Christine thrashed her body around, screaming, "No! The fire! It hurts!" Her voice cried out in a loud shriek. Sheamus ran in, going to Christine's side, "Lass? It's me. It's yer Irish daddy. It's Stephen, the man that loves ya." She screamed louder, her eyes rolling in the back of her head. Then, she fell silent again.
Lady Christina gasped, "It's obvious that there's something bubbling up inside of her mind." Sheamus lowered his head as he held her limp hand. "Lass. Pl-please. Open her eyes. Damn it I love ya. I love ya more than my own life. I wanna grow old with ya. I wanna have those two kids we talked about on my birthday. We can go back ta Dublin. I'll open a pub." At the mention of kids, Cherry hung her head lower. She knew the truth about Christine, but it wasn't her place to tell Sheamus the truth.
His chin trembled a bit as he sniffled, "Ya said ta call it Sheamy's Pub. I can't do it without ya. Can't do a damn thing without ya." The tears stinging his eyes as Drew gave his friend a small hug, "Come on, mate. No use making yerself crazy." The two men left, Cherry sat back down looking at Lady Christina, both at a loss on how to her their Angel sister.
