Never had Demiurge imagined himself to be in this situation. He was among the brightest minds in Nazarick; very well prepared, and while he paled in comparison to the Supreme One Ainz Ooal Gown, he liked to believe that he was a keen and sharp mind. So as he was now, in Ainz's office in the Great Tomb, kneeling before the large desk still in his damaged garments, but free of injuries thanks to the [World Class Item] called [Hygieia's Chalice], he certainly did not know what would come next, but he could see how death would be fitting.
Watching over him was Albedo, who dutifully stood to Ainz's right, the Overlord holding the [World Class Item] in question in his marble-white hand, as he and Albedo took in Demiurge's report regarding what had happened at the Great Wall with the man known as Aizen.
"So, you lowered your guard too much and brought this shame upon us all." Albedo stated, distain clear in her voice.
"I would never do such a thing. I can assure Ainz-sama that whatever Aizen is, he was capable enough to overpower and seriously outwit me. As the one responsible for this operation, I would never have risked going ahead with it if any of our information or theories indicated that even one of the Espada would be able to do what apparently all of them can." Demiurge strenuously retorted.
"While I won't argue the clear failure of some mongrel army, both you and Wrath, even a summoned form of him, should know better. It is highly unlikely that Aizen and Nazz would be anywhere near in power to a Supreme Being..." She dismissively began, before being interrupt by Ainz's cold, annoyed tones.
"Both of you be quiet. I need a moment to think."
'"As you wish. Our apologies, Ainz-sama."' Both Guardians quickly and contritely replied.
In their prostration, they were also quite surprised that their master would need a moment to take all of this in. Especially when he was the greatest mind in Nazarick. In reality though, Ainz very much needed a moment to take in recent developments since, as Demiurge stated, nothing that they knew or theorized would lead to a conclusion anywhere close to this.
Of course, Ainz also knew that they had very little information on the Espada in the grand scheme of things. While these levels of power seemed honestly ridiculous for what they had come across, they had gathered information on the existence of Dragon Lords and other beings that were seen as great calamities in this world, so it wasn't impossible that powerful beings did exist. That 100-meter tall giant treant Pinison called "Zy'tl Q'ae" was proof enough of that.
Still, there was also the fact that Demiurge described Aizen as having different powers than those associated with YGGDRASIL, which was honestly concerning. Then he considered Demiurge's clear concern at the fact that Aizen seemed to know of them. This was more of an enigma, but as Ainz thought back to all that they had learned he remembered Cthalpi, how Akemi was part of her guild, and how Akemi was allowed to visit the Great Tomb.
The prospect seriously hurt and made it so that Ainz's emotion repressors had to activate more than once. He would rather prefer to think of Akemi in a lighter tone, but right now he honestly did not know. Not to mention how Cthalpi, even by herself, was no easy foe, which only complicated the matter, if she was truly in this new world.
"Umu... Indeed. This was most unexpected." Ainz contemplatively said.
This was not what the Guardians were hoping to hear as it made clear that even the Supreme One had not predicted this turn of events of being possible.
"Ainz-sama..." Albedo tried to speak, when Ainz raised a hand to silence her.
"I will let you speak soon, but first I must finish my line of thought. I do not think that Demiurge 'lowered his guard' as you suggested, Albedo. From what Demiurge described, and with us knowing that Demiurge rules himself by facts, I accept that he indeed came upon a force that he, or should I say we, weren't prepared for."
"In that case, perhaps there was a lack of proper preparation?" Albedo mused, while eyeing Demiurge.
"Perhaps... If anything, there was a lack of consideration for the unforeseen. It is true that we have taken many precautions after what happened with Shalltear, but it's also true that further precautions and escape plans could have been put into place for this occasion. Of course, one must consider with how as things are today our concerns are growing, while the number of helping hands stays mostly the same." Ainz matter-of-factly replied.
"I apologize, Ainz-sama. I should have put more thought into the plan. I should..." Demiurge went to say, when Ainz surprisingly motioned for him to rise.
"The time for that is past, Demiurge. We should all commit this defeat to memory and be more prudent in the future. So, I think that we should learn from this and consider what to think of his offer to 'parley'."
"What about the fact that Aizen seemed to know who Demiurge was?" Albedo asked in concern.
"I fear that this may have something to do with Cthalpi. She was guildmaster to Akemi and Akemi was able to come visit Nazarick... While I won't have the implications be voiced here, I think we all understand what I am trying to say." Ainz said with a serious tone.
"To think that Lady Ak..." Albedo went to say, when Ainz's eyes darted in her direction sending a chill down her spine.
"My apologies, Ainz-sama! I did not..." she tried to remedy, but he raised a hand to silence her.
"Let's move along... I think that there may be two possibilities. First, is that Aizen intends to draw us out with a bluff. After all we do not know just how much information he has, so he may be trying to bait us via Demiurge. Second, he's enough information to put everything together, making it so that he knows who Demiurge is and is to whatever extent aware of us, and that means that he does wish to speak." Ainz calmly theorized.
"If I may, it may even be possible that if he is aware of that much, he is perhaps trying a more diplomatic approach, since the attack on the Roble Holy Kingdom was headed by a subject of the Sorcerer Kingdom." Demiurge analytically added.
"..."
That definitely was a problem, and Ainz most certainly did not want to deal with that kind of issue. So far things were going well with the formation of the Sorcerer Kingdom, and the recent deals with the Empire and Dwarf Kingdoms, their young nation was quickly gaining ground. Even the nearby Theocracy, a traditionally humancentric nation, was giving them a wide birth.
Still, he knew enough to understand that such an underhanded approach to an invasion, an unjustified invasion at that, along with the reveal of the true nature of Jaldabaoth would only serve to turn people against him. It really made it seem like a parley would be the easiest approach to things, and the former salaryman within him seemed to light up at the challenge.
"Perhaps we will have to relent and give in to his offer. We still don't know enough about the Espada's powers to come up with a sound enough strategy, and as is he didn't give any terms to his offer, so we are at a handicap." Ainz admitted with a sigh.
"Should we perhaps send someone to get in contact with him? Since he has shown the desire to talk, we could reply in kind." Albedo openly mused as she cradled her chin with her left thumb and forefinger.
"We can't make any official moves. As is we may be extremely compromised. To send someone in an official capacity may only increase the risk of political disaster, or hand them something else to turn on us." Demiurge pointedly argued as he pushed up his glasses.
"Hm... Then let's find a way to get word to the Espada, the long way around, through couriers. They need only know that the message is urgent, and it is for the Espada. Because if anything I think that silence would give them too many possible interpretations." Ainz stocially replied.
"Yes, that can easily be arranged." Albedo acknowledged with a deferential bow.
"Good. We will go on the defensive this time. Have the message sent that Aizen's message has been delivered and that he is free to proceed about arranging the 'parley' as he sees fit."
"Ainz-sama, I do not wish to bring any more shame to Nazarick, but if I may, is it the best course of action to give them this much freedom?" Demiurge asked, somewhat desperate to fix his mistake.
"To crush a threat as swiftly as possible isn't a bad strategy, Demiurge. However, we know too little, and are quite lucky for the chance to parley with those that ruined the stratagem for the Holy Kingdom. I think we would do better gathering information and gaining insight into the true nature of the situation before doing anything else." The Overlord calmly argued.
"As you wish, my lord." Demiurge relented with a bow.
"That being said, unless there is more to discuss, I consider this matter closed. Demiurge, take [Hygieia's Chalice]. You still need it's protection, and arrange for the message to be delivered." Ainz pointedly added.
"I... I am unworthy, but as you wish, Ainz-sama." Demiurge quickly said with a deep bow.
"What should I do, Ainz-sama~?" Albedo chuckled, slowly nudging her way towards the Overlord.
"Along with your other duties, I would like for you, with Demiurge's assistance, to take account of what can be salvaged from our efforts in the Holy Kingdom and the areas near it. The demi-humans aren't important. Same for summons, but anything else may yet be salvageable."
"I will get to that right away." Albedo said, with a head-bow.
"Very well. Then the two of you are dismissed."
Dismissing both NPCs, Ainz took the moment to make his way to his room and let himself collapse onto his bed, before letting out a frustrated cry, along with passing his hands through his head as if there was hair there. The implications regarding Akemi were painful to consider, that the sister of a close friend of his would have spent all that time taking notes to pass to her superior and that he would come to know of this via a very puzzling and concerning incident.
He was very glad that Demiurge had been lucky enough to meet Aizen in a situation where Demiurge was worth more alive than dead, because based on what the NPC said, death would have been quite possible, and Ainz wasn't keen on having to see another one of his friend's creations dying, even if he could bring the demon back.
Aizen's power was also concerning, while to be so strong as to be able to play around with Demiurge, whom was the second weakest of the Guardians wasn't necessarily concerning, the strange nature of his powers was. Ainz was also concerned by the report of how the summon version of Evil Lord Wrath had seemingly been eaten away by whatever energy Nazz was able to produce, since it too was clearly something potent and was in the hands of a capable fighter.
While the reports on what the rest of the Espada could do were still a little too vague, given the damage that had been done to all Nazarick's forces in the area, Ainz could easily imagine more high-level approaches to what they were known for doing to add to those reports.
Overall, Ainz thought that while things were looking bad, they were in no way hopeless. Aizen showing an offer to parley gave everyone a moment to breath and prepare. If anything, Ainz could understand what Aizen was doing. After clearly spending so much time on gathering resources and building reputation, the Espada were making a bid for power, not too different to what Nazarick had done. Indeed, that much was clear, it made it clear that Aizen was sharp witted, this coupled with the strange power and the particular, uneasy feeling Aizen gave Ainz showed that peaceful times weren't going to come anytime soon.
In the Roble Holy Kingdom, victory came to Kalinsha as the Demi-Human Alliance who, despite its great numbers, was driven back by the allied army of the Kingdom, Merfolk, and the Sea Dragon, but to a much greater extent by the forces of the Espada. Indeed, despite the victory that had been achieved, there was a strange silence that filled the area, as everyone had seen the inhuman army be carved and torn apart by a smaller group of people.
While some were sent after the remaining Demi-Humans, those that remained behind looked after the injured, made strangely peaceful conversation with the Merfolk, and naturally watched the Espada move about with awe as those that had just shown power like that of the legendary Thirteen Heroes, and as some would even whisper power like that of the gods.
Within the city, the location that held the match between Nazz and Wrath was sundered as the summoned Evil Lord, while weaker than the Espada, had been a volatile and violent foe. So that after the demon was defeated, fading away as Nazz's corrosive energy destroyed Wrath from within, the Espada was alone among a sea of debris and fire. An awe-inspiring sight for those that saw it. Feeling it a scene worthy of a painting in a heroic saga.
Not far from that location, in a higher place in the city that had allowed those there to watch the battle unfold was Queen Calca Bessarez and the Custodio sisters. With them were a few of the surviving Paladins and adventurers. A few since a Scale Demon had come to their location, killing some of their number, before a single arrow had killed it.
So the Queen, her Twin Wings, and the mix of Paladins and adventurers that served as their guards were able to have almost prized seats to watch Nazz sunder what they believed to be the Demon Emperor. Meanwhile, Annika had rained holy energy and fire down from the sky, as Carmyn created absurdly large patches of vegetation, even small forests, as all other Espada cut down and punched holes into the enemy as if they were straw training dummies.
It was frankly, mindboggling. No one could believe it, nor could easily come to some kind of conclusion on the matter. It made the small miracle that was the open aid of the Merfolk and Sea Dragon seem mundane. Especially when the aura around a floating Annika made her truly seem angelic.
Queen Calca Bessarez was using a nearby wall to hold herself up, her mind racing at the fact all these forces had seemingly come together as the Espada, and all of it under Aizen's hand. It was more than enough proof to once again heighten the standing the man held in her heart. Kelart was stunned, but did her best to retain a calm and cool expression. Even though she felt so pathetically outclassed in every respect, and especially outsmarted as she understood that all of this had always been a possibility, with Aizen having decided that now would be the time to make this happen.
Remedios was in silent disbelief, as her feeble mind tried and failed to make any sense of this situation. For the first time in a very long time, she felt so small and so outclassed that she could not accept it. Like an out-of-control waterwheel, it kept going round and round in her mind, freezing her in place like a puppet without strings to move her. Her stupor only came to an end when one of her paladins informed them that it was safe to descend to ground level.
The women gathered themselves, as the Paladins and Adventurers started to set-up a camp in a large square having made sure that the area was safe from enemies. The intention to keep the Queen safe, and also make a location where people could gather after the battle was done and things could be discussed. It was near a makeshift tent that was being put up, where Calca and the sisters currently stood while coordinating the camp making efforts and talking to people, that Aizen remerged.
The Shinigami appeared in clear view of the three women, looking as pristine as ever, with a familiar mask in his hand, and surprisingly enough a katana hanging from his waist. His arrival was a shock to all, and prompted Calca to drop everything and to run to his side. The Custodio sisters made their way after her, while all were shocked to see Jaldabaoth's damaged mask in the man's hand.
"Wha... H-How are you here?" Calca gasped, looking Aizen over.
"And... With that in your hand?" Kelart mumbled, equally shocked.
"I brought this here for you, my dear. The demon escaped, however he was injured and left this behind. Along with what I can see here, it seems that it was a victory." Aizen calmly replied, handing the mask to Calca.
"B-But didn't Nazz kill him?" Calca gasped, taking the mask in her hands since Aizen seemed to wield it without being affected by any demonic side effect.
"That was most likely some kind of trick. He tried to play on everyone's fear to effect moral. I can assure you that the one I faced was exactly the same figure that attacked the Re-Estize Kingdom." Aizen said, with a reassuring tone.
"...!"
At a loss for words, Calca dropped the mask and leapt into Aizen's arms, words not being enough to express her happiness and relief, Kelart still silent as she chose to look down at the fallen mask, while Remedios looked around trying to see if anyone would share in her outrage, but everyone was silent.
"If you could do that much, you should have killed him!" Remedios growled.
"Sister..." Kelart tried to argue, before Remedios simply stormed off to vent her frustrations elsewhere.
With a nod from Calca, Kelart promptly excused herself and went after her sister, giving the Queen time relatively alone with Aizen as things went on around them. Since, as they spoke the army was being instructed to gather at that point. So much so that in the distance one could already see Nazz, marching towards Aizen's location with a sizable group of people dutifully following after him.
"Still... It's... baffling how all this power could be..." Calca tried to say, when Aizen softly spoke over her, surprising the queen.
"...So close?"
"That wasn't exactly what I would say, but yes I am relieved." She chuckled, blushing, as Aizen himself chuckled in good humor.
"That is good to know."
"I must admit that I wasn't expecting this kind of outcome to the battle. Indeed, this will do us much good."
"Agreed. That is why I believe that you should prepare to welcome the army that will soon arrive here." Aizen smoothly suggested.
"Yes, but do stay close. As the leader of the Espada, and the man that went after the enemy leader, you deserve recognition."
"As you wish."
Eventually a small stage was set up for Calca to stand upon, with the sisters and Aizen near her, while around them was a massive gathering of people. Filling their frontlines were the Espada, different generals and other humans of importance, a Merfolk representative, and even the Sea Dragon's mighty form, which then proceeded to awe those unaware by transforming into his humanoid form.
This shock was brief, since due to all they had seen and been through in the last 24-hours, they found themselves able to quickly adapt. Once this died down, they turned and could see that the Holy Queen was looking them over, seemingly ready to give a speech as she gathered her thoughts and made her feelings clear.
"Thanks be to everyone who were able to gather here. As we have but recently been beset by a trail most grave, I'll make this brief, as there is still much to do after. Much gratitude to properly show to our own and those that have come so far to help us. I think that I voice everyone's feelings as I say that the Espada's power was far beyond what we could ever imagine or hope for in an hour of greatest need. I must also tell you, that even their leader Aizen was involved in this battle, as he engaged the Demon Emperor himself, injuring the enemy leader before he escaped... So, as the Queen of the Roble Holy Kingdom, but even more so as someone that lives in our humble nation, I thank all of you for defending this nation." Calca warmly and earnestly said, giving everyone slight yet elegant bow in gratitude.
Taking a moment to allow the crowd its cheers and words of kindness and praise, Calca again fixed her posture and hair, as she once more gathered her resolve to add to her brief speech, with such a resolute tone and posture that it seized the attention of all present.
"I would also like to take a moment to announce something that will further strengthen our nation... Namely, to announce that soon I will be married to the Espada's leader, Aizen Sōsuke."
'"...!"'
Silence filled the area as no one could believe what they heard. Surprisingly, the same went for the Espada. While they expected for this to happen eventually, being aware of Aizen's scheme, nothing indicated it would happen now. Even Aizen himself was taken aback by Calca's swift actions. Indeed, his surprise was refreshingly genuine, since even he wasn't expecting her to be so upfront about their relationship, or taking such a big step out of nowhere.
The Custodio sisters were likewise stunned, as the Queen hadn't shared anything with them. Remedios especially bordered between surprise and rage as she felt even more escape from her grasp, enhancing her insecurities and feelings of powerless. On her end, Calca remained composed for a few moments longer, before marching up to Aizen and embracing him, making it clear to everyone how serious she was, and how she had played right into his hands.
From there on much work was ahead. The planning of a royal wedding aside, the Espada now needed to deal with the people who now knew their real power, and very much saw them as beings of a mythic, heroic nature. Of course, their most immediate concern was routing the remaining Demi-Humans within Roble's borders, but there were also throngs of people that lost their homes, and they would need assistance.
Needless to say, that things were only getting started for the Roble Holy Kingdom. Even so, Calca felt at ease since things could only get better, with her soon-to-be Holy King Aizen at her side. Still, the Espada's latest feats naturally did not go unnoticed, and quickly word began to spread about how this small group had almost singlehandedly quashed a demi-human army led by Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth. At an almost unnatural pace, several nations were made aware of some of the truths behind the nature of the Espada and their fearsome leader.
Among these nations was the Dragon Kingdom, whose bettering situation allowed for certain information sources to be established and allowed for news of the Roble Holy Kingdom's latest events to come their way. Having received this news, Prime Minister Falko Kemuel Jantzi made his way to meet Queen Draudillon Oriculus to inform her personally of the important turn of events.
Since their birth, the Queen would spend much of her time tending to her children. When she wasn't able, she would either tend to her duties, train in her developing powers, or both. Luckily, her aid and bodyguard Elizabeth had turned out to be such a doting aunt for them, and was more than willing to take care of them in their mother's stead, even if it was brief.
Falko found Queen Draudillon in what had at one time been dungeons underneath the royal palace. There the Queen was found in her true form, wearing simple clothes and gathering her energy to cast spells, or try to push it out to work almost as extra limbs similar to what other Dragon Lords could do. Entering the training room, Falko announced himself and waited for the Queen to stop her current exercise of making a crate float to sit on it and turn her attention to her Prime Minister.
"So, what is this urgent news from the Holy Kingdom?" She asked with a weary sigh.
"The Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his demi-human and demonic army have been almost singlehandily pushed back by the Espada. There's also word that Aizen, their leader and coordinator, injured the Demon Emperor himself, and according to reports will marry their Queen soon."
"Honestly that should be expected." Draudillon sighed, somewhat surprising the man who spoke with a perked brow.
"Because of what we have seen from 'Nazz'?"
"Yes. Despite what we know of his personality, I believe that for him to have become part of such a group, it would have helped if these people could in some way share some kind of standing with him in power. As for Aizen... it would take more than just intelligence and skill in management to keep a group like that together." She firmly replied, earning a nod from the Prime Minister.
"Part of me would have much preferred for them to have made this reveal in our war, even if they have clearly done much, nonetheless. But I do understand why one would like to keep this hidden, and why one would reveal it, especially now that the Sorcerer Kingdom has risen." Falko mused.
"Indeed. Our war is over, but for such a Kingdom to come about will most likely lead to great change. To which I think the Espada are countering." The Queen mused with a worried sigh.
"You think he will be in danger?"
"He is an Espada, and selfless in his own way. So that if a need to fight comes about he will do it. I just hope that this Sorcerer Kingdom isn't as large an issue that it would put him in any real danger..."
"Yes, one can only hope that is the case, my queen."
"But for the time being let's wait and continue recovering. Especially now that the Beastman Country has gone quiet. For now, I'll go check on the children." Draudillon said with a smirk, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders as the thought of see her little ones brought her great joy.
In the Slane Theocracy things hadn't been as easy going. While sometimes certain events were censured for the practicality of keeping Zesshi calm, even so things as the Sorcerer Kingdom's emergence would be slowly fed to her. Or at least this would be the case if she hadn't become more active due to reports regarding the Espada. Now with the Sorcerer Kingdom, and the reports regarding the Espada in the Roble Holy Kingdom, she had quite the outburst.
Marcus Septimius Amor, Captain of the Black Scripture, had to experience this firsthand as he stood near the entrance of a completely demolished training area. Adding on to the situation's intensity, Zesshi had done this not long after she woke up, so she currently wore some simple garments as she demolished the area, debris strew about along with smashed Golems that had been until that point important and old pieces of training equipment.
"These Espada and Sorcerer Kingdom are certainly a threat to us. We better do something about it~" Zesshi excitedly grinned, looking at her Captain.
"If the situation ever calls for it, I'm sure something will be done." He said, as she approached him stopping just a few feet away.
"Oh, I do hope so~ Still, to think that there would be a group out there capable to taking on such a large army, according to the reports, and that a man we thought was a cunning but simple manager would be able to fight the Demon Emperor... That's most interesting. I wonder how he would match up if compared to me~" Zesshi wondered, in a rather concerning tone.
"I'm not sure what you are referring to, but we do not know what the power of this Demon Emperor was to begin with, so this man Aizen may not be as impressive an individual as you may think. However, it is concerning that a group known to be larger than the Black Scripture is out there, and was able to take on such a large force. With the addition of the Sorcerer Kingdom, I fear that we are coming upon a time of a great shift, so please remain focused, for the good of what we stand for." Marcus said, earning a smirk for her.
"I say that something like that is welcomed. Between the Sorcerer Kingdom and the Espada... I wonder if there is a man among them strong enough to make me know defeat... Someone capable of giving me a strong child~" Zesshi purred, passing her hands over her belly.
"..."
Marcus should have expected such a comment and honestly, he did not know what to say. He couldn't even play it off as a jest, since he's known her twisted sentiments for most of his life, and if anything, it only went to show how her loyalty to the Theocracy was extremely questionable at best. From what he knew, he honestly did not see Zesshi as being too different from the father she hated. Both valued their own power, and had some kind of mania regarding the desire to see it proliferate. Yet, her worth as a trump-card could not be denied, as he was certain the Cardinals thought.
"Whatever the case, please take a moment to calm yourself and return to your duties, Zesshi. I'm sure that if push comes to shove you will get your wish to cross blades with one of these newly risen forces, so please stop destroying priceless artifacts." Marcus said, ending his words with a sigh.
"I don't enjoy the idea of waiting even more. Especially when I have reports telling me of the powers that's out there, but fine. I'll stop ruining the things our forebears left us." She chuckled.
Marcus was relieved to see Zesshi calm down so quickly, which was a relief after all the damage she had caused. Seeing her leave to go about her usual day, he looked at all the damage in the area, and sighed at seeing how troublesome things were becoming. It wasn't like he minded fighting, but part of him did enjoy moments of peace. Moments that were now becoming more infrequent with his continuously evolving duties, and constant match-making sessions to find suitable wives. And his warrior's instincts told him even more turbulent times were ahead...
In the Baharuth Empire, the reaction to this turn of events was much more subdued. It wasn't that they were aware of the actual nature of the Demon Emperor and what his defeat meant. Still, the presence of those from Nazarick in the Empire, made it where Jircniv and those that supported him needed to keep reactions to such turn of events to themselves in a way. This was very much the case for those that saw the Espada as perhaps a means to pushing back Ainz and his people now that the Espada's power was made clear.
Currently, Emperor Jircniv Rune Farlord El Nix was by himself in the balcony of his bedroom. It was rather apt representation of how trapped and powerless he felt, and while he still have people backing and supporting him, his fear regarding what Ainz may bring about was almost oppressing at times. So, to have received a report regarding the display the Espada put on and how Aizen was to marry Calca felt like he was being shown a possible out of his current situation. Especially when his nation was to be vassalized by the Sorcerer Kingdom.
The power to take on an army, and a man that had tangled with the Demon Emperor, and one that would certainly become a King. Jircniv remembered when he met Aizen, and this simple looking man had beat him in chess. Thinking back, how wrong he was to think that Aizen was only lucky at what he and the Espada achieved. Truly, it was a shame he didn't push for a better relationship with the Espada, and currently had no means to communicate with them. Now that every means of communication known to him was no longer safe.
Leaning back on his seat, the Emperor sighed and passed a hand through his hair, thinking of what a massive mess he was in. With a weak chuckle, it seemed that despite him viewing Calca as a weak ruler, she was probably about to put up quite the display with Aizen backing her. What a disaster, to see all his plans come to an abrupt stop because of some nightmarish den of monster, masquerading as a tomb. Still, a new ray of hope seemed to fill his being as a wry smile creased the edges of his lips. Yes, perhaps things weren't entirely hopeless after all...
Two weeks passed since the battle against Jaldabaoth, and while the Roble Holy Kingdom was still recovering, the day would also be marked by the royal wedding of Holy Queen Calca Bessarez to Sōsuke Aizen. It spoke much of the Queen's desire to be with the man she loved and have his support as close to her as possible. Especially when after this, not only would he be her husband, but the nation's new Holy King.
This meant that for those weeks, the Espada had to close their business as a lot of attention was placed on them for their feats, and for the fact that Aizen would soon have a role of great importance in the nation. As a result, many were already trying to win his favor, ingratiate themselves to him, or find ways to take advantage of him.
Unfortunately for those people, they quickly learn that Aizen was as sharp as he was powerful, and that no simple ingratiating would earn them his good graces. In fact, Aizen would simply dismiss them, but offer some kind words for their interest in the country's political situation making it sound as if they were talking to him to show their keenness to support him and the Queen.
The marriage was to take place in the capital, drawing a lot of people from both the nation's Northern and Southern portions. Everyone wanted to see and get their chance to size-up Aizen, wanting to get to know more of the man that the Queen loved and if his political skills were a match for the martial might that he was said to wield.
In preparation for the event, both bride and groom were placed in separate rooms as a skilled team of servants made sure they were ready. After said preparations were concluded, they were still given some time alone or with people they trusted to help them mentality prepare for their big day.
In Aizen's case, he opted for solitude in his chambers, having chosen for this so that the Espada were allowed to spread out through the area as they saw fit. Although he was still graced with Amelia's presence, with the two coming to a final conversation before their plan regarding the Queen reached a critical point. Aizen sitting next to a desk that had a mirror on it, while Amelia got a chair to sit next to him.
"Honestly, I think we misjudged her. I don't think either of us had expected her to push for this to happen so quickly." Amelia wearily sighed.
"Agreed. But even if rushed in a sense, this is the expected outcome."
"Ah, like always~ Still, you're going to have quite the captive audience today, so I hope you don't get your nerves rattled." She said with a chuckle, earning her a raised eyebrow.
"Ah, jokes. An attempt to hide your true feelings on the situation perhaps?" Aizen countered, making Amelia frown.
"Ah, throwing something back at me to ignore the fact that you didn't expect her to act as she did. And a rather low blow at that Aizen, since I thought that we had put that topic aside."
"True on all accounts. But, I would like to know what you have on your mind regarding this marriage and how I will have to put much more focus on Calca and this land's petty politics."
"Please, spare me the concern. She's a puppet. A means to an end and in no way worthy of your time or consideration. Not to mention she'll really be the one getting into a marriage of convenience. Whether she knows it or not. That being said, the time you spend with her is necessary, but at the same time a waste, since it'll take away all the fun we could have~ But I have come to terms with things so let's move on to something else." Amelia dismissively retorted with a hand-wave.
"I just wanted to ensure that you hadn't changed your standing on things. After all, I have misjudged someone's actions before." Aizen chuckled.
"Right. Then, is there anything else you wish to discuss or do before the ceremony?" She chuckled, brushing her leg past Aizen's.
"I would like for you to go check on Calca." Aizen replied, politely brushing her leg away.
"Wha-? Really?"
"Yes. But don't look so bothered, I'm sure you take great enjoyment in teasing her." He mused with a slight smile.
"Fine. I'll go see her then."
Getting up from her seat, Amelia went to see Calca, managing to actually see her by using Aizen's permission. Eventually she ended up in a similar room to Aizen's, but this time Calca stood in the center in her beautiful and grand wedding dress, with her Twin Wings around her making sure she was ready, with the trio surprised to see Amelia enter.
"Something you need?" Remedios asked with raise brow.
"Aizen asked for me to come here. To see how the Queen was." Amelia matter-of-factly retorted.
"I'm fine. A bit nervous, but that is normal from what I understand." Calca innocently chuckled.
"Indeed it is." Kelart added, smiling at her friend's and Queen's demeanor.
"That is good to know and I'm sure that Aizen will be relieved to hear this. I also would like to personally congratulate you on this turn of events and the marriage. After all, Aizen is quite the man and whoever got to be at his side for their entire lives certainly is lucky.~" Amelia mischievously remarked.
Remedios didn't think too much of this pointless banter, but Calca and Kelart on the other hand were both concerned in a way by the remark. They knew that Amelia had been with the Espada from the beginning, since she had been presented as its leader for a long time. So both could imagine that they were close, but they just didn't know to what extent. Calca was moved by a more innocent consideration of possible feelings of love from Amelia to Aizen, while Kelart blushed as she thought about the more carnal implications, which for her made more sense if anything had ever happened between the two.
"Ahem~! I think this is hardly the time for such remarks." Kelart said, with a cough.
"Oh? What do you mean?" Calca innocently asked with a head-tilt, prompting Kelart to get in close and whisper in her ear, making the Queen go red-faced.
"What's the matter?" Remedios asked in confusion, looking at everyone in the room.
"N-Nothing. And I agree, this is hardly the time for such things." Calca mumbled in embarrassment.
"I'm not sure I understand what you two are talking about~. But as long as you remember how Aizen will soon be your husband and whatnot, you two will spend a lot of time together and learning about each other, so I think that got my message across. I've known him for a long time, so if you need anything you can just ask." Amelia chuckled, preparing to take her leave.
"Before you go. Just... just how well do you know him?" Calca asked, sounding almost apprehensive.
"We have been together for many years now, so I like to think that I know him rather well.~" Amelia mischievously replied, before bowing and taking her leave.
Calca was left understandably flustered by the exchange, and the hints that Amelia had at a time laid with her soon-to-be husband. It didn't help that while she was very well known for her beauty, she was innocent on many other things. While Amelia had comparably lesser beauty, she had a much more mature and experienced charm, that Calca couldn't replicate.
What gave her comfort was that all she had experienced with Aizen so far, showed that he had made efforts towards being with her and not Amelia. Still, Calca saw that perhaps she really should have considered other things when thinking of a future with Aizen. Especially in regards to intimacy, of which she lacked knowledge and experience.
Eventually, the ceremony came about and both bride and groom looked stunning. Calca showing the beauty that everyone knew her for and Aizen showing everyone not only his looks but his imposing presence. Indeed, even like this he looked very regal and the confidence he displayed throughout the entire ceremony added to this.
It was so much so that during these events those present who in some way were against Calca's rule couldn't help but agree with her choice of suitor. From their point of view, Aizen looked capable and kingly. Or at the very least, seemed to be the perfect candidate for Holy King, and someone to carry Calca to being worthy her station.
Once the ceremony ended, a large feast was held. While some might have decried such extravagance in light of recent events, none could deny the boost in morale it gave the masses, knowing that they now had a powerful new King. As the festivities concluded, the Holy Queen, with the newly crowned Holy King, took their leave to the Royal Palace where for a few days they would be allowed some reprieve as they enjoyed their newly forged union.
A small part of the evening was spent familiarizing Aizen with the royal palace, its layout, and certain important members of the staff. This tour ending with both rulers entering Calca's bedroom, with the Queen showcasing it to him, before she took a seat on the bed as she then blushed slightly and sighed.
"It sure was a long day."
"Expectedly so. Still, I don't think any amount of preparation would have allowed me to imagine being here, being married and even being a King." Aizen said, placing himself a few feet in front of Calca.
"I can imagine. I was merely a girl of 15-summers when I took the throne...And I must admit that I still can't believe we are officially together after so long." She chuckled.
"Yes, this has been a longtime coming, and I must admit that I was surprised with how fast you arranged things." Aizen remarked, causing her to blush.
"T-That wasn't my intention! After the battle... I realized how important things are, and I just wanted to get things done as they should be. I wanted for us to be together. Because with the nation needing a strong leader and I need the support you've offered me for so long..." Calca started saying, when Aizen stopped her by caressing her face.
"It's fine. I wouldn't have had it any other way, somce this would come to us sooner or later. Now we can just enjoy what we have, take these few days to relax and after that I'll give you all the support you need to help the nation recover." He comfortingly said.
"Well, you'll do more than just support. We'll both help this nation recover, as equals."
"Indeed."
"That being said... This is our bedroom now, and we are husband and wife... There are certain things that are expected of us." Calca said, blushing as Aizen calmly sat to her right.
"Yes, there are. But you do not need to push yourself, we have all the time in the world." He calmly argued.
"As usual you have a great way with words, and I thank you for putting me at ease. Still, this is something I want us to do. I've wanted to do so for a while now, but as an unmarried lady... it just felt wrong to think of such things."
"I understand the rationale. I simply don't wish to push anything on you yet, but I won't deny you if that is what you want." Aizen said, carefully taking her hand.
"That is what I want." She said, her face bright red but her determination present.
"Then, please relax. Like I said, we have all the time in the world, so we don't need to rush."
What followed was a night of great discovery for Queen Calca Bessarez, as she finally came to understand what Amelia might have been hinting at by mentioning how much of a "man" Aizen was. On his end, along with leading Calca on through the night, he had to admit how it felt good to gather the fruits of his labor.
While the Roble Holy Kingdom was an isolated nation, with his bind on the Holy Queen and his role as Holy King, he could start to make changes and expand his influence. Not to mention he also needed to ready himself to make good on his desire to parley with Nazarick, and the swiftest way to make that happen, was by making a visit to the Great Tomb itself, and finally meet with the Sorcerer King in a non-official capacity. Indeed, there was much to be done, and Aizen for one was keen on starting to get his plans moving forwards...
