The day had finally come. All was calm and pleasant as the sky was clear, temperatures rather comfortable, people and animals alike peaceably went about their lives, and yet there was static in the air. A quiet tension that hovered over all ever since the Lord of the Espada and Holy King of the Roble Holy Kingdom, agreed to meet with the Overlord of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, and Sorcerer King of the Sorcerer Kingdom.
This was uncharted waters for them both. Yes, they had gone to meet leaders, and they had brought others to their knees or earned their dedication, but never had the scales been equally tipped for both sides. The risks weren't truly known, one side knew more than the other, but even that information did not translate into full certainty. Too many factors were in play that could derail their meeting if cooler heads did not prevail.
As the day began, preparations were well underway since that meeting would take place in the morning. Aizen made his instructions clear with Rylen, Jaecar, and Elsa being his escorts, while Annika held the reins of the Espada during his absence in the sense that she would act if things went wrong.
Alvis and Cayo would assist the Custodio sisters during the Holy King's absence, or more specifically Alvis would assist Kelart while Cayo would be himself to keep Remedios' attention elsewhere. Amelia was expected to continue her work as usual in her capacity as Prime Minister, even if she much preferred to be present at the meeting.
In the cases of Nazz and Leinas, they were expected to follow instructions if they came, but until then they were in the Dragon Kingdom with their loved ones. More than any, they actively made an effort to become more than what they were when they first took Aizen's deal.
While a point of concern for some in the Espada, since they were the strongest duo with Nazz the strongest among them, Aizen let them to be. Even going so far as letting "Nazz" bring Queen Draudillon Oriculus into the fold, officially making the Dragon Kingdom part of his network.
On his end, Aizen was the last to mobilize for the meeting, since before he could leave he needed to pass one final obstacle; his wife Holy Queen Calca Bessarez. Currently he stood in the middle of their grand walk-in closet, a large chamber filled with all manner of garments and accessories. There he stood in the middle facing a full-length mirror and took in his garments. He wore dark boots, white trousers and shirt with blue trim and long tailed coat over it embroidered in gold, and his katana sheathed at his waist.
As he made sure he was ready Calca entered wearing a slik gown as she just finished her usual beauty treatments and was now going to get dressed. However, seeing her Holy King preparing to depart, she walked up to him, placing a hand on his arm and looked at both of them in the mirror, smiling and then looking at him.
"So, you have more business to attend to regarding the Espada?" She softly, lovingly asked.
"I know it is a bother, but even now some things must come through me before some decisions are made. It's something I am still working on delegating." Aizen coolly replied, taking and kissing her hand.
"But it just seems to happen so often. Do you fault me for wanting you by my side now that we are married?" Calca argued, pulling his hand in to kiss it back.
"Of course not. However, the duties I have to the Espada remain and I must not neglect them after so much effort went into it. Still, it isn't my intention to neglect what we were so careful to build between us, so please do bear with it a little while longer. I intend to have things sorted out soon." Aizen replied with a charming smile.
"Truly?"
"Indeed."
"I would still prefer if you were to stay, but I don't want to cause trouble for something you were working on before we even knew each other. So you may go, but be quick to return my dearest.~" Calca said as she mischievously chuckled.
Exchanging a goodbye kiss, Aizen departed. Being joined by Jillur who accompanied his superior until a point where Aizen could naturally distance himself, to then go to Las Noches and from there go to the meeting location.
Meanwhile, back in Nazarick Ainz also conducted his own preparations, donning on his usual panoply, along with the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown's fake version. Before departing he called all the Floor Guardians, with the exception of Mare and Aura who would be on the scene, Albedo and Sebas to his chambers. There they stood by the entrance, while he stood by his desk, the small red dots in his skull looking upon them.
"The time has come, I will now go and speak with Holy King Sōsuke Aizen. I understand that even now most of you are not comfortable with this arrangement. However, it is my duty to watch over the legacy that is this Great Tomb and its inhabitants as the Sorcerer King, as the one that stayed behind, and as its Overlord. So I ask you to observe and wait, because this will be a critical moment for our history." Ainz resolutely announced.
There was no immediate reply from any of the NPCs, abd for a moment Ainz wondered if he said something wrong or gone overboard. He could imagine that given the times he had rehearsed this speech it could come off as perhaps not genuine enough.
"Ah, such a way with words. As expected of Ainz-sama." Demiurge remarked, getting several agreeing comments from the others.
"I apologize, but it is as you say, Ainz-sama. There are those among us, myself included, that still do not want for this to happen. However, we have agreed just like in the past with Shalltear, in the end you are our ruler, the Supreme One, to which we answer. So your decision is made and we shall abide by it. But rest assured that if anything does happen we will act accordingly, and that we wish you the best for what lies ahead with all our hearts." Albedo announced, before bowing with the others following suit.
"..."
Relief washed through Ainz seeing his speech work, and that so far everything was going well. At the same time, he could feel the pressure and responsibility weigh on him with an intensity that was only really comparable to when they had first arrived in this world, and had to deal with a mind-controlled Shalltear. So it was certainly another make or break moment.
"Umu. It is a relief to see all of you in agreement. I will return here when it is finished, so be at ease until then. [Gate]."
Opening a portal to his side, Ainz eyed the NPCs once more, seeing the remnants of his friends within them, and the crystallization of years of friendship and hard work. With what seemed to be a nostalgic laugh which garnered the the Guardians' attention, the guildmaster of Ainz Ooal Gown took his leave.
Emerging on the other side of the portal, Ainz took in the air and the scenery. On one side was the beauty of an emerald-green forest, and on the other the desolation left by his battle with Shalltear. It was an ironic and sentimental choice when he decided upon having the meeting take place here, but it was the weight of the location and what had transpired in it, that influenced his decision. Because he was once again burdened with responsibility and purpose.
A few feet away from him was a simple yet emaculate rectangular wooden table with a chair on each side. Nothing terribly fancy, but still appropriate for those in similar positions. Walking to it, Ainz reached into his [Inventory] removing two glasses and the [Pitcher of Endless Water]. Setting them down, along with a small selection of culinary goods for Aizen, as was customary hospitality for these meetings.
Ainz didn't take his seat right away, instead waiting for a moment until the air about 10-feet in front of him split open vertically, and from the resulting light Aizen emerged, carrying with him a mass of neatly stacked papers and scrolls. The Shinigami walked up to the table, the duo exchanging nods, before both took their seats.
"I arrange for some refreshments, if you are in need." Ainz courteously said, motioning to drinks and food stuffs while letting the staff float next to him.
"I thank you for your thoughtfulness and hospitality, but for the time being I am fine." Aizen replied in a similar fashion.
"Very well. Then let me begin by formally thanking you in my capacity as Sorcerer King in you stepping away from your duties as Holy King to attend this meeting. While I imagine it may be a disturbance to your usual duties, I am sure that a man such as yourself can understand the importance of this event." Ainz regally stated.
"The sentiment is mutual, as I very much do understand the importance of this meeting. After all, I will admit that our first 'true' meeting was not conducted as compeers. Also, allow me to say that this is a most curious location for a meeting such as this." Aizen mused, motioning to the scarred landscape on one side, and the beautiful forest on the other.
"The location has a certain 'weight' to it, which I think fits our current situation."
"Hm. I see."
Aizen's brief and even overly simple reply got Ainz thinking if he had done something wrong and not approached things as they should given their standing. Yet he quickly pushed these thoughts aside, and the natural feeling of unease that Aizen gave off towards undead, to refocus on the clear problems in their relationship.
"Now, let us get into the heart of the matter; I called for this meeting to make something clear. I wish to point out the obvious fact that yourself and the Espada know more about us than we do about you. While it is only natural to keep secrets in the interests of one's national security, secrecy in some respects will only hinder our working relationship going forward." Ainz announced, keeping his declaration simple and direct so as to not overcomplicate matters.
"Straight to the point, I see. I won't deny it. Nor do I believe you would go through all this trouble just to call a perceived bluff." Aizen remarked, leaning back onto his seat with a pleased smile.
"Nor did I expect you to attempt to deny it."
While these were the words that came out of the Sorcerer King's mouth, he did in part imagine a scenario where Aizen tried to talk his way around the accusation, which Ainz could have replied by enumerating examples. On his end, so far Aizen was unfazed, as he had an idea of the minds behind Nazarick and what they were capable of doing.
In essence, the possibility of their re-examining things related to him and the Espada, finding certain coincidences, and putting other pieces together wasn't inconceivable. In truth, he would have been disappointed if they were incapable of doing that much.
"I'm pleased to see that we're in agreement. So then, would you be willing to shed light on where you got the information you have on Nazarick?" Ainz asked with an increased seriousness in his tone as the lights in his eye-sockets brightened.
This direct line of questioning frankly amused Aizen. While he considered Nazarick had been piecing things together, and would try to further divine information from answers to questions, to outright ask for his 'source' in such a manner was a refreshing surprise. He oddly began to enjoy this moment as he spoke with his usual smile.
"I wonder if this is an attempt at having me reveal information, or if you are simply in the process of grasping things for yourself. I hardly think you would pose such a query without having some ideas of your own. Making me wonder just how much I would really be telling you, that you did not already know yourself."
"That is hardly the case. I am simply giving you a chance to explain things on your own terms, before I put forth what we have learned."
"Oh? Our agreement made it clear we are not to plan against each other. My concern is that something coming from me will reveal information you do not presently have. You have correctly concluded that I have information related to you and Nazarick, but I don't see a reason to reveal the source. Not unless you have theories of your own in which case I can either confirm or deny for you." Aizen explained, with a calm and even cold tone.
It was this tone that started to get under Ainz's nonexistent skin. The information's connection to Cthalpi and more importantly the spy that acquired it to begin in Akemi, were matters that touched him on a personal level. He simply couldn't let it go, or not have the existence of Cthalpi confirmed.
"In that case, here is what we have concluded. Only an insider would be a viable source of information, yet I know that no insider or those close to them should be or have been in this world. Leaving a third-party as your source. Someone with an indirect connection to Nazarick, and that this individual would probably still be active to offer assistance in processing the information." Ainz mused aloud, his eyes briefly shinning brighter.
"Ah, I see... It seems you are aware of Cthalpi."
The statement hit Ainz like a wave of cool air, allowing him to regain his composure without need of his inhibitor, making it clear that what he and Albedo had discussed was indeed accurate. This reaction wasn't lost on Aizen, who despite the nature and look of the being standing before him, could get a decent read on Ainz's emotions. He was in all likelihood, one of the few in this entire world, who could possibly do that.
"We came to that conclusion after piecing some things together. We theorized that she is hiding somewhere on a hidden spot on the sea. The same place known for ships going missing, that you and the Espada so uniquely managed to escape."
"So you indeed just needed confirmation. Yes, that is the case. She's been in this world for centuries now, and is seen as a god to the people around her, protecting them by keeping them hidden. But once we met she had to reconsider her approach to things. This eventually led to her sharing with me, what her comrade Akemi had shared with her." The Shinigami coolly informed.
"Those circumstances are most regrettable." Ainz hissed, just as his emotional inhibitor stabilized him.
"That is not for me to judge. Nor will I share details of Cthalpi's location, as that would go against my agreement with her. Neither will I tolerate any move made against her or her own."
"You say that, but when the Demonic Disturbance took place, someone related to her was there, correct?" The Overlord asked in a dark tone.
"Correct, but that was an independent individual out on her own. Regardless, as we are now, that situation should never happen again." Aizen insisted with a neutral tone.
"Umu. Agreed."
Shifting in his seat, Ainz took a moment to process everything. Deep down he wasn't all that displeased with the fact that there was another Player in this world that was behind Akemi turning traitor on her family and the rest of Ainz Ooal Gown's members. That was truly the hardest part to swallow, even if in a way he understood it.
Akemi was capable and very intelligent, making her perfect for the role. Especially when Nazarick had clashed with other guilds in the past, sometimes needlessly. So their track record wasn't the best, which included interactions with Cthalpi. In that regard it made perfect sense. It was a very clever move, befitting the game, but at the same time it hurt to process. Even being undead with emotions actively being suppressed, it hurt Ainz to know what Akemi had done.
"Is something the matter?" Aizen asked, pouring himself a glass of water.
"A-Ah, no. Not at all. It's just that this situation certainly went a touch beyond what I had perceived. Despite everything it is a testament to what Akemi could do." Ainz replied, straightening his posture.
"I remember Cthalpi echoing a similar sentiment." The Shinigami mused, taking a sip from his cup.
"Then she knew her well..." The Overlord chuckled, before immediately regaining his focus.
"...This clears up the biggest issue, I would say. I would like a copy of these notes, but it is my belief that they are detailed enough to hold you back from anything one might consider as 'rash'."
"It certainly was informative."
"So it would seem. I think that brings this topic to a close. Next I would like to discuss another. That being Princess Renner Theiere Chardelon Ryle Vaiself, and her connection to you." Ainz stoically pointed out.
"Oh?"
"Would we be wrong to assume that you have a connection with her? Of course, I'm talking about more than just a normal business connection, taking into account that you have known her for a long time and how you seem to operate, given the situation in what is now your Holy Kingdom." The Overlord pressed.
"Do you fear that she has betrayed you?"
"Don't you? After all, what this is bringing to light is more than just my concern." Ainz replied, trying not to let his concerns show too easily.
"While you do have a point, that is to be expected, no? She is a singular individual, that most would say has more in common with your people, no offense, than to humans." Aizen mused aloud with a smile.
"That is what most would say, but what do you say?"
"That most people in this world sadly have far too limited imaginations... You are right. We have been working with Renner for a long time. Long before the Espada were even officially announced. It was a chance meeting but her true nature became clear. Not only that but she was able to perceive enough of the 'true' me, for talks to be had and a deal to be struck. So yes, in that regard she has been working for me all along."
"And in accordance with our deal, a move against her would be a move against you?" Ainz asked, wanting to weigh his options.
"Even without that as a factor, she's a capable resource to have around. She has a lot of pull within her nation and is a good source of information for all of us. I'm certain you and your own are aware of that." Aizen calmly replied.
Ainz found himself unable to argue with that. The reports he received from Demiurge and Albedo spoke of Renner's peculiarities and usefulness. So both agreed that as long as Climb was kept safe, or in a state where her desires for him could be safeguarded, Renner would willingly sell out her own people if need be. Indeed it went along with what Aizen said of duplicitousness being in her nature.
Perhaps it was the recent confirmation of Akemi's actions, or an underlining concern for any play that could be made against Nazarick, but for a moment Ainz considered being done with Renner. However, it quickly became clear that she was still very much of use. It also created a point of commonality between himself and Aizen, which was something he was hoping for to make the situation as easy to accept by the NPCs.
"Indeed, that much is clear. If anything it's a testament to her capabilities." The Overlord mused, wanting to sound composed.
"Yes. Even with their generally weaker disposition, humans do find ways to prove their worth." The Espada's leader chuckled, taking a sip from his glass.
"You see that much worth in them?" Ainz asked.
"Don't you?"
"I would have preferred a direct answer, but very well. I can't say I do place that much worth on them above others, but I do admit that there are those among them whom I have seen as being worthy of my attention."
The conversation reminded Ainz of how he had helped Carne Village, met the Swords of Darkness, Nfirea Bareare, and Gazef. Indeed, the latter was still a subject that came to him from time-to-time, since it still felt like a waste. Even if the Warrior-Captain always had been headstrong, with the outcome clear in hindsight. Yet it felt like a loss on many levels. His answer was also informed by wanting to choose the right words to echo his feelings, without sounding too detached.
"I echo a similar mindset. As in my experiences I have met a few individuals that have proven worthy of attention." Aizen said.
"Umu. Perhaps you would like to discuss those papers." Ainz mused, looking at the stack of papers resting on the table to Aizen's side.
"These are reports and bits of information we of the Espada have gathered related to a certain topic. But before we get to that, I think it best to mention that I have been here before. It was when I crossed paths and exchanged blows with the one called, Shalltear. She just happened to be standing over there as if waiting for something." Aizen casually informed, pointing in the direction of the incident.
"...!"
There was a shift in the air as Ainz's eyes shined and a dark aura briefly enveloped him, before his emotions were promptly held back. He shifted on his seat, leaning forward as he interlaced his marble-white fingers and spoke with a haunting echo in his voice.
"You fought Shalltear?"
"More like exchanged blows. Something else I would like to say. Are you perhaps familiar with someone named Clementine?"
"Please do away with needless questions. The point, if you will." Ainz said, his body tensing.
"As you wish. Before I met Cthalpi, I recovered her body and the one of the wizard that had died along with her. Upon resurrection and proper interrogation, I discovered a wealth of information, along with those more likely to have left Shalltear in that state."
"Then you have names?" The Overlord asked, failing to conceal his eagerness for information he has wanted for so long.
"I do. However, I would like to preface by mentioning that from what I was able to gather, it was self-defense prompted by an unprovoked attack from Shalltear herself."
Aizen wanted to see how Ainz would react to this, and to judge what the Sorcerer King would do with this notion and what he would prioritize. On his end, Ainz curled his bony hands into fists as he rested them on the table. No longer interested in putting up a façade, he just wanted to know who had attacked one of his friend's creations, even if it was self-defense.
"Nevertheless… A deed was committed against one of my own. I have the right to know who it was."
"Oh? Very well. From what I learned the ones responsible for this are the Black Scripture of the Slane Theocracy, using something known as the [Downfall of Castle & Country]." Aizen matter-of-factly informed.
At this point, the Sorcerer King's body seemed to relax. His eyes again glowing red and the black aura erupting from around him. Finally, he finally had what he needed! He finally knew who was behind Shalltear's mind-control and with this information what he needed to do was clear. Before his emotions could be suppressed, Ainz's hand reached for the papers, just to stop when Aizen rested his hand on them, followed by his emotions suppressing, and slowly the Overlord returned to his normal mental state.
"You wish for hostilities, even after what I said?" Aizen curiously asked.
"Something like that cannot go unpunished!" Ainz declared, his anger clear in his voice.
"And then what? Will you march your armies? Use magic to wipe their land clean? And then what? What of the good work done for your nation's image in the Roble Holy Kingdom? Or even the work in your own nation? They will live in fear that the ruler that resides above them will erase any slight insult..." The Shinigami dispassionately began to say, when Ainz spoke up.
"This is no 'slight insult'. This is an attack on the legacy of my comrades. It cannot just be forgiven."
"And? She would have killed them, if not for what they did. She would have killed them for just being there. For being in a land that is more theirs than was hers at the time. By no means do I tell you to just let it go. Attack if you wish, conquer if you must, destroy if you will it, but much would be lost. They have a rich history that spans longer than any other nation on this side of the continent. They have items, gear, and the descendants of their 'gods', or rather 'Players' that once helped them. Those who could be turned to your side, and with the right displays could bend the knee, instead of dying needlessly."
"Descendants?"
Despite his frantic and rage fueled state, that bit got through to Ainz. It touched on more of the long-term concerns regarding some of his NPCs who, from what little he knew, could indeed have children. Again shifting in his seat and letting his emotions be pushed back down to normal, he let out a sigh, massaged his brow as he waited.
"Yes. And from what I understand they would be considered powerful even by some of your standards."
"Is that why the Espada has had so little dealings done with the Theocracy?" Ainz asked in curiosity, earning him a smirk.
"Indeed. As I said, they are an old nation. Well organized with many secrets, so not as easy to approach. Even more so when I got this information from Clementine."
"Umu. So, who are these descendants?" The Sorcerer King asked in a calmer tone.
"I would like to preface by mentioning that overall the Black Scripture are considered elites within the Theocracy and beyond it. Among them two stand above the rest, and step into your range of power. Referred to as 'godkin', or the descendants of Players. They are the Captain Marcus Septimius Amor and the secret seat who is known to them as Zesshi Zetsumei. Although from what Clementine has told me, that is not her true name." The Espada's leader cordially informed.
"And you say that they are of power comparable to what we're familiar with?"
"Indeed. I have met the Captain and know he could put up a decent fight against and even defeat some of the lower-ranked Espada under certain circumstances, with 'Zesshi' stronger than him. The Captain is a fairly interesting individual, if not a bit starved for validation and genuine recognition. It is my understanding that the latter is bored with having to stay hidden as their secret weapon."
"So, you argue to keeping them alive?" Ainz thoughtfully asked.
"Themselves and many others. It's a working and functioning nation, and is one of the more advanced ones on the continent. One just needs the proper display to have things turn in their favor. In the case of those two, perhaps with the right incentives, they could come to see things differently." Aizen said with a sly smile.
"Let me see if I understood this correctly. You just advised me on how to conquer the Slane Theocracy, along with offering me information about them?" The Overlord asked, clearly taken aback by what he saw as a "competitor" giving such advice.
"You weren't the only one who thought that our standings were uneven. You acted upon it, just as I would have. Knowing this I came with a token of good will. Because not only would the Slane Theocracy be a great boon, but so would be the gratitude of Elf Country to their south." Aizen explained with a charming expression and smile.
"..."
If Ainz had eyes, surely they would have widened. Since he didn't have any, the dots in his skull could only flare, since being aware of the war between the Theocracy and Elf Country, getting rid of the Theocracy would earn him the favor of Elf Country. Though he was promptly reminded that as of now, he had no proper justification to attack the Slane Theocracy, as the entire situation with Shalltear was covered up by using "Momon".
"Of course, the Elf King may be a problem as he is the reason for the war, but I'm certain you and yours could handle that situation." Aizen analytically added.
"These papers also have information on the Elf Country?"
"Correct. And what little we know of their King. It of course has everything that I've been saying and several other things."
This too was something that Ainz was very interested in. He has known of Elf Country for some time, and was recently considering going there to learn more about it and perhaps get to know the locals, since he imagined that the Twins would like to be around more of their own kind, given that they were still young.
Of course, they already had three of those former elven slaves, but more would certainly be better. Ainz was also interested in knowing more about what caused that war. Mostly because even the three elves did not know the reason, since from their point-of-view, it just happened one day.
Fairly satisfied with how Ainz was now acting, Aizen pushed the papers towards the Overlord and pulled his hand back, allowing Ainz to pick them up and place them in his [Inventory] for safe keeping.
"That was quite informative and good token of peace between us. However, as much as it pains me, I must be frank and say that the same cannot be said for my followers." Ainz informed with a contemplative tone as he stroked his marble-white chin.
"Hoh? You think they will turn on your decisions?"
"Not that, but only there's some unfinished business that I would prefer to see resolved. More specifically, during the Kingdom's Demonic Disturbance, your First-Ranked Espada, committed a deed against Shalltear. Something that she has yet to let go of and I believe needs to be amended if things are to continue." The Sorcerer King replied in a neutral tone.
"I see now... What do you have in mind?"
Here Ainz paused, because this was a topic of conversation that he had not mentioned to any of the NPCs. It was because he was certain it would bring up even more turmoil to this meeting, which as is was already fairly dividing among the Guardians, not matter how much solidarity they put on for him.
"I wish to host a match, between Rylen Tsezguerra and Shalltear Bloodfallen, so that things can be resolved."
"Resolve things for Shalltear perhaps, but Rylen himself has had no issues with what transpired back then. I also am not one to approve of battles to the death." Aizen said in a more business-like manner.
"Umu. It's not my intention to have it end in the death of either. Their fight would need to be much like that in a tournament, so that it will be made clear and enforced, but I believe that it is the best way for her to let go of her dislike for Rylen and better accept and embrace the current state of affairs." Ainz explained in a likewise tone.
"Hmm... An intriguing proposition... In that case while an isolated place would be best, a small audience would be beneficial, just to ensure that such rules are properly enforced on both sides." Aizen pointed out in an amused tone.
"Perfectly understandable. When it comes to location, we can establish it another time, after you're able to present this idea to your Espada. However, I am not against you choosing the location, since I already chose the location for this meeting." Ainz said in a diplomatic manner.
"I can think of a few isolated places for them to fight to their hearts content. As to the entourage, we can keep what we established for now, with some staying at a distance, while having two others with us to restrain our respective fighters if need be." Aizen suggested in a similar tone.
"In that case, a larger perimeter would be needed." Ainz contemplatively mused.
"That can also be arranged, but as you said, I need to discuss it with the Espada. Then we can determine the details afterward."
"Umu. I am just pleased that you've agreed to the proposal. With that said, I believe that I've said everything I planned to say." Ainz informed in a pleased tone.
"Likewise."
"I would also like to say that this was a rather fruitful meeting." Ainz added, rising to his feet.
"And I expect that now things have been made clearer for you and your own." Aizen remarked, also rising to his feet.
"Umu. They are indeed. I won't hold your initial approach against you, Aizen-dono. Upon taking everything into account, to be distrustful of us is understandable, but it speaks to your ability that you saw the benefit in clearing up a few things here. Perhaps we will be able to continue to cooperate for the mutual interests of out respective nations." Ainz said in a dignified tone, as the fake staff floated back into his grasp.
Exchanging nods, each ruler took a few steps back, at which point the space in front of Aizen again opened to reveal light, while Ainz opened a [Gate] for himself. The Overlord took just a moment to eye Aizen's peculiar portal with interest, before they departed.
Returning to his chambers, Ainz walked up to his desk and took a seat. Letting out a sigh, he silently gave thanks for how well things concluded. Perhaps he worried too much, but given Aizen's level of power and how he first came to Nazarick, he could not help but be concerned how things would play out.
However, during the meeting with just the two of them, the Shinigami did not seem as threatening as his presence made him feel. In a way it had been refreshing. The weight of his responsibilities aside, Ainz felt like he could speak semi-normally to Aizen, without needing to keep up too much of the image he put up for his subordinates or having to expect the cordiality so many addressed him with. The fact that they were both rulers in similar circumstances likely helped that along.
The Sorcerer King was then brought back from his thoughts by the Guardians who were still in the room since they waited for his return, and were now standing at attention, as the arrival of Aura and Mare signaled that they could begin.
"Nothing happened." Aura yawned in boredom, stretching her limbs.
"T-That's not true, sister. They d-did speak." Mare timidly pointed out.
"Be quiet the both of you. Ainz-sama is thinking." Albedo said in a low, but stern tone.
"It's alright, Albedo. I was just taking a moment to process the entire meeting as a whole." Ainz informed with a placating wave.
Upon hearing his voice Aura, Mare, Shalltear, Sebas, Albedo, Demiurge, and Cocytus stood in a perfect line with their backs straight and in perfect silence as they waited for the Supreme One to speak at his leisure. Ainz tilted his head curiously at their actions, and then calmly spoke.
"Hm? There's no reason for concern. The meeting was a success. Aizen is in fact a fairly reasonable individual. Like we had suspected, both Cthalpi and Renner are connected with him, with Cthalpi existing in that area where ships go missing. Of course as I have mentioned before, no move will be made against them. Cthalpi's true location is still a mystery and will remain so. As for Renner, she will prove useful and will continue being a source of information for us."
"As you wish, Ainz-sama." Albedo neutrally said with a bow.
Reaching into his [Inventory], Ainz pulled the papers Aizen had given him, placing them on the table and taking a moment to pause, before deciding to move onto the top with the Slane Theocracy.
"Aizen shared these papers with me, as they contain information regarding the Slane Theocracy and Elf Country. The relevance of these, stems from the fact that they were the ones behind Shalltear being mind-controlled with a [World Item] called [Downfall of Castle & Country]." The Supreme One stoically announced.
'"...!"'
It was like the entire room froze all at once and time seemed to stand still as Ainz had almost casually revealed so important a detail. He begun to worry that he should have prepared them better for this revelation, as the entire room practically oozed with an oppressive heat that could likely be the bloodlust of "killing intent" he has heard so much about. But as an undead, Ainz had difficult reading such things.
"So it was them!? What shall be done as their punishment!?" Shalltear hissed, eager to in some way get revenge for her greatest blunder.
"Calm down, Shalltear. I understand your anger and I share in it, but you need to lower your voice. First I need to explain that according to Aizen, it was self-defense in reaction to you attacking them first. Also we must remember that as is, we do not have a valid reason to explain an attack upon their lands, since Momon was the one that 'defeated' the vampire 'Honyopenyoko'." Ainz pointed out with a sigh.
"O-Of course. My apologies." The vampire contritely said, lowering her head.
"Did you get a chance to read these documents, Ainz-sama?" Demiurge analytically asked, pushing up his glasses and being the more outwardly composed of those there.
"No. Aizen did explain some things to me, but I do plan on reading them. I also intend on having copies made so that both you and Albedo can do the same, as I want your opinions on this."
"As you wish, Ainz-sama." Both Albedo and Demiurge dutifully said with a slight bow.
"But if I may ask, what does this mean for our plans for the Re-Estize Kingdom?" Demiurge contemplatively asked.
Truthfully, that was something Ainz had yet to consider. While he did want to allocate resources to the Slane Theocracy and Elf Country even before fully reading Aizen's papers, they indeed had plans for the Kingdom. Ainz also pondered on what Aizen had said, regarding what people would think of his actions and what people might think, especially now that he had aided the Holy Kingdom. Without a "casus belli" as his old friend Punitto Moe would have called it, they couldn't openly take action.
"Let's focus on this for the time being, since what Aizen said did rouse my curiosity. Speaking of which, there was another topic that we discussed, and I will at first apologize for having hidden it from everyone here." Ainz formally announced.
"There is no need to apologize, Ainz-sama. We are your servants." Albedo resolutely said.
"Even so, I apologize. I did not forget Shalltear's sentiment towards Rylen for their brief encounter, so I asked Aizen to arrange a match with the both of them. While he still has to speak with the Espada, it is my belief that it will happen."
Collective surprise shot through the NPCs, since none of them considered that as an option. Especially Shalltear who had been doing her best to try and push back her dislike for the Espada, as a means to not shame herself or Nazarick again.
"My apologies Ainz-sama, but couldn't this be an opportunity for the Espada to try and attack us?" Albedo cautiously asked.
"No, I don't believe so, since details have yet to be set in stone. However, it will take place in an isolated location with Aizen deciding where. It will be us with two escorts for safety, and two more to put an end to the match. It will not be to the death, as neither side wants to take any losses. A perimeter will be kept by a yet to be defined number of individuals, so while they could try to attack, it is clear that Aizen isn't keen on taking losses from this, and neither am I." Ainz pointedly replied.
"Rylen. The. First. Ranked. Of. The. Espada. Is. Said. To. Be. A. Skilled. And. Powerful. Warrior..." Cocytus began to say.
"I've faced him before. If we meet again he won't stand a chance." Shalltear growled, crossing her arms.
"Which Aizen would be perfectly aware, and most likely was aware when you first faced him. Yet, he agreed to this, probably because neither side showed what they could truly do given where, when, and how it took place." The Supreme One pointed out.
"Indeed. They will bring something new to this fight." Demiurge added with a cunning tone.
"Exactly as Demiurge said." Ainz added.
"You give me far too much credit, my lord. I am simply echoing your thoughts. But as Ainz-sama said, Shalltear also wasn't able to use all that she has at her disposal, so the element of surprise goes both ways."
"Do not forget that Aizen has access to information about Nazarick." Albedo sternly remarked.
"Yes, but a valid point was made. While they may have an idea of what to expect, there is still a difference from that to actual combat. So, does this arrangement please you, Shalltear?" Ainz calmly asked.
"Y-Yes, Ainz-sama. I am very grateful." Shalltear said, giving the Overlord a deep bow.
"Umu. I expect you to put up your best performance. This will be a unique opportunity to see what the top of the Espada can do under his best of conditions, so it must not go to waste."
"Understood."
"To use this fight as a chance to see what the Espada can do, as expected of Ainz-sama." Albedo said, with the others again echoing her thoughts.
While he would wish that the NPCs would throw less praise at him, Ainz admitted that this time they were right about his intentions. His attention in terms of power levels, not counting Aizen, was split between Rylen and Nazz, given how the latter defeated Wrath. But since Rylen was the number one and Shalltear had a beef with him, Ainz decided to ask for Rylen to be the one to fight instead of Nazz.
"Demiurge I want duplicates of these papers made so that you, Albedo, and myself can read them at once. The rest of you are dismissed to return to your regular duties." Ainz instructed.
When he was left on his own, Ainz let out a sigh, stumbled into his room and collapsed onto his bed. Burying his face in his pillow so as to block out the light and trying his best to get himself a moment of rest, before Demiurge returned with the papers. Once again, that feeling of wishing he could sleep found him as mental fatigue caught up with him. Deep down, he hoped that his ridiculous luck in this world would hold. The last thing he wanted was to see his friends' creations put into any more danger because of him...
As this meeting in Nazarick took place, for Aizen, it wasn't a simple matter to gather all of the Espada to discuss his recent meeting. He needed to return to his duties as Holy King and husband first, but did use the rings to inform them of how the meeting went, and the proposal of Rylen fighting Shalltear in a match.
Only when night had fallen and Calca asleep were the Espada, Aizen, and Amelia able to gather around a rectangular table in the Espada's official headquarters. Aizen sat at one end of the table, with "Nazz" sitting opposite to him, Amelia sitting to Aizen's right, and the rest sitting in chairs with their numbers upon them.
"Aizen has already made all of you aware of the situation, so let's begin with Rylen as he shares his stance in fighting Shalltear in what amounts to a glorified exhibition match." Amelia announced in a business-like manner.
"There isn't much to say. I have no problem with facing her again." Rylen calmly replied.
"Naturally, you will be allowed to use your new equipment that has been produced with the assistance of the Elder Coffin Dragon Lord and the others. However, I do expect you to take it seriously from the start." Aizen said with a subtle seriousness to his tone that made clear his meaning.
"If I am to win, that would be the best course of action. Understood."
"Should we be concerned about their intentions?" Leinas asked, looking mildly concerned.
"We will take precautions of course, but it is not Ainz's intention to risk losses. He simply wants to rid Shalltear of her burdens, and more than likely see what Rylen, whom he probably sees as the strongest Espada, can do." Aizen replied, now in his usual calm, collected fashion.
"Are you certain about this?" Leinas insisted, surprising the other members of the Espada.
"Is something on your mind, Leinas?" Annika asked with a perked brow.
"Or have you lost your nerve, to be questioning Aizen-sama in such a manner?" Juno growled.
"You speak as if Aizen usually gets these things wrong, or like he withholds things from you." Amelia added in an empty tone.
"..." Leinas seemed to be thinking of what to say, when Aizen spoke softly over her.
"Everyone quiet down. You may speak freely Leinas."
"Tch! I just want to make sure that no mistakes are made when interpreting this Ainz. I have someone that I care about now. I want to know when I'll have to tell him that I may not return. Same goes for him." She explained, motioning to Nazz.
"And you don't care about us?" Cayo nonchalantly asked.
"It's not the same thing."
"Have you grown complacent, Leinas?" Carmyn wearily asked.
"What are you going on about?" The Tres Espada hissed with a raised eyebrow.
"You find a man and that's all you care about now? We are sitting at the table with the man who made that possible and all you can say is if he made a mistake and is putting that at risk? Don't tell me you thought it was over after we finished things in the Dragon Kingdom?" Carmyn argued, unfazed by the glare that came from Leinas.
"That is not it at all! I know very well who I owe this to, but at the same time I want to make sure that I don't leave any regrets behind if we do have to move on Nazarick."
"Leinas, I can say that this match doesn't come with any intention of setting a trap. I've spoken with Ainz, and all things considered he was a fairly reasonable individual, who knows his priorities. However, can something else happen and get past me? While it is not impossible, I doubt that this will be it." Aizen said, keeping his calm tone which now had a calming, placating quality to it.
"I... Fine. I mean, I never said I would walk way. I just have other priorities now. I'm sure Nazz understands." Leinas said, leaning back into her seat while sighing.
"I do. And I already know what I would do if things went bad in the Dragon Kingdom." Nazz remarked with a heavy and resolute tone.
"And what may that be?" Amelia sternly asked, when Aizen raised a hand to stop her.
"That's enough. Now that Leinas' concerns have been mitigated, let's move on. Cayo and Alvis how did things go with Calca's 'Twin Wings'?"
"They went well. At least I believe my interactions with Kelart went well." Alvis replied.
"She likes to tease him. I think it's because of the fact that despite how strong and at this point experienced he is, he is still a bit nervous and awkward at times." Cayo added with an almost brotherly grin.
"Don't say that..." His partner sighed.
"What? She's a good looking woman. There's nothing wrong with being nervous."
"Do not let that get to you, Alvis. What is important is that you are managing to get along with her and see your task through. What about you Cayo?" Annika supportively said, then swiftly diverting the topic with her question.
"Remedios doesn't like me, but to be fair she doesn't seem to like most people. Luckily, given how hard headed she is, even with the clear power discrepancy, she was keen on having a few matches. I think I really tired her out." Cayo replied with a friendly shrug.
"It's not hard to not like you, to be honest." Annika mused with a mischievous grin.
"Agreed." Carmyn flatly added.
"I can see where she is coming from." Leinas pointed out with an eye-roll.
"You are... complicated at times." Alvis awkwardly added.
"Oi. This is honestly ridiculous." Cayo said, crossing his arms in annoyance.
"Cayo's faults aside, that is good to know. I can also add that indeed I managed to see Alvis and Kelart working together, and I see a bright future ahead of him if things go well." Amelia said in a surprisingly positive tone.
"Ahem! Thank you." Alvis humbly said with a head-bow.
"Then all is going as expected. You are all dismissed for the night. Tomorrow I will call upon some of you to begin planning for this event." Aizen announced.
Rising to their feet, the Espada gave a bow to Aizen and departed, leaving the Shinigami alone with Amelia. As the duo also prepared to depart, Amelia walked up to him with a playful look on her face.
"Shall we go to a room~? Your wife's asleep, correct~?" Amelia mischievously purred.
"Apologies, but I must disappoint you. I think that would be too great a risk at this time." Aizen replied, causing Amelia to sigh in disappointment.
"Will I at least get to see this fight?"
"Let us see what can be done about that. It would not do for both the Holy King and the Prime Minister to abandon their posts at the same time."
"What a bore. Things are going great for us at this point, but I am missing that thrill from when I was actually able to be there with you when gathering the Espada." Amelia pointed out.
"I am aware, but at this point we can't make any mistakes. So, I ask for your patience."
"The usual then." She retorted rolling her eyes.
While Amelia was clearly not that happy with the situation, for the time being all Aizen could do was return her and himself home. He did not want to risk any questions being made if anyone was to pick up on the fact that the Holy King was gone from his bed during the night along with the Prime Minister.
Back in Nazarick Ainz, Demiurge, and Albedo were having a meeting in the Supreme One's study after they all had managed to go through the information on the files and had some time to ponder on the information contained in them.
"The information was well compiled, and certainly I can see the merit in annexing the Theocracy and Elf Country in the manner Holy King Aizen suggested." Demiurge said.
"Agreed. But I'm still wondering what we should do regarding the Kingdom." Albedo professionally pointed out.
"Hmm... I may have some thoughts on the matter. If I may, Ainz-sama?"
"You may, Demiurge."
"The Baharuth Empire were the ones that originally began a war with the Kingdom. So then, why not give them the command to advance with conquering their territory? We have provided them with Death Knights and Warriors which would make the process much easier for them. In this way, it wouldn't affect what we have done with the Roble Holy Kingdom." Demiurge thoughtfully said as he pushed up his glasses.
"Oh, I see. And if we don't participate directly or show any involvement, any accusations would fall on deaf ears." Albedo promptly added in realization.
Ainz had to admit that this day was going well for them. Especially when he was of a like mind regarding this subject, and his recent reading of all the reports he could get his hands on had a lot of this information still fresh on his mind. Indeed, it was a great idea, and he felt quite pleased with it.
"Agreed. We can send word to them to start their invasion as soon as they can muster their forces. Also, perhaps we can send a Frost Dragon to them. I understand they have Aerial Cavalry, but one cannot contest the damage a Frost Dragon can do in a wide area. Umu~! Let's send one with a messenger to them, and have them declare war upon the Kingdom within the week, so as to not make it easy for those to question why a Frost Dragon was sent there." Ainz eagerly instructed as he stroked his bony chin.
"I shall tend to that." Demiurge dutifully said.
"Good... Oh! Ensure that constant contact with the Empire is maintained so that we can receive updates, and make it clear to them that there are those whom we need alive. Also, instruct Emperor Jircniv to deploy Fluder and his students. Their magical support will help quicken things even further." Ainz pointed out.
"Ah, I see. That would help to quicken the war's pace, as the rather backwards Kingdom has utterly failed to establish its own force of magic-casters, and the Adventurer's Guild will not participate in wars between human nations. As expected of Ainz-sama~! It will be done."
As Demiurge acknowledged his master's orders with a deep reverential bow, Ainz could not help but feel uncomfortable from the NPC's praise. Truth be told, all Ainz thought about was to keep Fluder busy with something that could be explained away later as, "training". Quite frankly, Ainz did not like the old magic-caster.
Every time they interacted Ainz felt like he was on the receiving end of some pervert's affections, and he could very well do without that in his life. This recent business with Aizen and all that it entailed was already consuming vast amounts of his mental stamina, and honestly dealing with Albedo's barely-restrained affections was bad enough.
"Ahem! Now, moving onto the matters of the Slane Theocracy and Elf Country, I've given it some thought and ordered Mare and Aura to speak with the former elven slaves. They very much sounded keen on the idea of us doing for their people what we did for them. Perhaps it was a silly thing to ask, but I wanted to know their feelings on it all the same. My initial plan is for us to go to the Elf Country, and once we know the area and remove its ruler who, according to Aizen's information, won't be missed. We annex that land as a vassal-state, but this won't be made immediately clear. At least until the Theocracy continues attacking and in their ignorance, it becomes a case of attacking our subjects, and obviously we won't stand for that." Ainz informed, his eyes glowing with malice.
"Ah, as expected of the Supreme One..." Demiurge said.
"Indeed. As expected of my beloved, Ainz-sama~!" Albedo added, her wings fluttering.
"..." Ainz went to speak, but Demiurge continued.
"...To have the foresight to ask that of former citizens, to use it as an excuse for a 'peace keeping' mission."
"And then use the natural delay of inefficient methods of information spreading to justify the retaliation against the Theocracy." Albedo enthusiastically said.
"U-Umu. Indeed. Now, please calm down the both of you." Ainz instructed, seeing things being blown out of proportions yet again.
"Our apologies, Ainz-sama." Both quickly replied with a bow.
"What shall be done with the Theocracy? Despite what Aizen said, they still committed a sin against the Supreme Beings." Albedo asked with a now deadly serious edge to her otherwise honey-like voice.
"Certainly there are things that could serve us. Such as their relics and these 'godkin'." Demiurge pointed out.
"As this information stated, Shalltear was the one that initiated conflict, so the fault falls upon us in that case. However, as Albedo said an afront was made against us and if things go according to plan they will attack one of our vassal states, so we will reply in kind. We will not exterminate them, but we will march into their territory and show the power of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. If they don't bend the knee, we will keep going until they do. As Demiurge says, there are things they have that we can make use of and according to Aizen, with the right incentive these godkin can be plied to our needs." The Sorcerer King explained, leaning back onto his seat.
"Ara~" Albedo mumbled, her face growing red.
"Something the matter?"
"It just feels like some time since Ainz-sama has been so hands on with our strategy~!"
"A-Ah... Umu... Well, Demiurge?" Ainz asked, wanting to change the subject as soon as possible.
"I would be more at ease with a more... complete approach to dealing with the locals, but I also see the merits in keeping them alive, given recent events with the Roble Holy Kingdom. I also recommend that perhaps Cocytus be deployed to fight both the ones called 'Marcus' and 'Zesshi'. If it comes to it, as they are both capable combatants, and his warrior mindset may assist in getting them to see the merits in working with us." Demiurge cunningly replied.
"Hmm... It's a good point. Very well, I approve of it."
"Thank you my lord. I'm sure you had already thought of it, Ainz-sama."
"No. I must give the credit for this idea to you, Demiurge." Ainz said, wanting to praise the NPC for something he had yet to consider.
"You flatter me, Ainz-sama." Demiurge graciously said with a bow.
"Not at all. I should also mention that I think it would be for the best, for Aura and Mare to go to the Elf Country, along with me to guide them. Our intention is to get close to them, so the smaller and more familiar the force the better." Ainz promptly announced.
"I understand, Ainz-sama. Although, I mean no offense, but those two aren't familiar with such things as diplomacy to be the best choices to go on a mission like this." Albedo pointed out.
"I am aware. That is why I'm going, Albedo. To help guide and integrate them with their race. It may not be optimal, but it can be a boon for us." The Overlord explained.
"I understand, and I assume Pandora's Actor is to take your place if anything is needed in terms of the Sorceror King?"
"Umu. When necessary, yes."
"As you wish. You can leave it to me to handle that situation."
"It is very much appreciated. Demiurge, I will leave the matter of the Empire to you."
"As you wish, Ainz-sama."
"Now, everyone is dismissed for the night. We'll start proper planning for the duel tomorrow."
Giving the Overlord a bow the duo departed, as Ainz used [Gate] to return to his palace in his Kingdom's capital city of E-Rantel. While he had been avoiding his kingly duties for most of the day, the least he could do was rest his mind there for the night. Although in the blink of an eye, that respite came to an end as morning quickly came.
Both parties would soon begin planning for how they would handle the duel between Rylen and Shalltear, where it would take place, and who would present, both as Royal escorts and to monitor the surrounding area. All while Nazarick planned their strategies in dealing with the Theocracy and Elf Country, along with sending a Frost Dragon with a missive to the Empire with their marching orders. Indeed, it felt a new era was dawning with the morning sun...
