Two days had passed since the battle at the Katze Plains, and while Rylen and Shalltear were allowed by their respective leaders to take time to themselves, the rest of the world continued moving onwards. In the Elf Country, the council brought together to represent their nation not only accepted vassalage under the Sorcerer Kingdom, but had communicated that answer to the Kingdom, being made official shortly thereafter.
As expected by Nazarick, due to the dense and dangerous nature of the Great Forest of Evasha, along with the war against the Slane Theocracy, news of the Elf Country now being a Sorcerer Kingdom vassal-state was slow to spread. Meaning combat continued even after being made official, with the people of the Theocracy killing those that were now under the protection of the Sorcerer King.
As things stood the Theocracy was making decent progress into elven territory. At least this was what was on Schoen's mind, who was the Vice-Captain of the assassination, guerrilla warfare, and counter-terrorism focused Holocaust Scripture. He and a group of ten subordinates currently stood in a small clearing, having just pursued and killed a trio of retreating elves.
Motioning for his team to take a break, the man used this time to examine the bodies, wanting be certain that these were indeed just normal elves and didn't have a blood connection to the Elf King. This way, information for his report wasn't missing anything critical.
"These past few days have been easy." One of his subordinates chuckled.
"Keep your voice down. It's remarks like that which'll get you killed." Schoen harshly remarked in a low tone.
"To be young." Another nonchalantly mused.
"Something is coming our way!" The groups's most skilled ranger announced.
"...!"
Before anyone could speak, several feet in front of them they saw a massive reptilian form lumbering through the trees with an almost vertical stance, dark scales, and dorsal plates going down its back. While it slow in its gait, no one could deny it was imposing, and was unlike anything they had seen or read of in reports. It was also clear to those more experienced that this was no mere beast.
"Scatter and fall back... Slowly." Schoen instructed in a low tone.
With determined nods everyone promptly did as instructed, using stealth and/or magic to scatter and then move through the trees as they began their trip back to the currently 2,000 strong camp that was just a few minutes away from their location. This was not lost on the creature as a mighty roar echoed through the forest, and the sounds of its footsteps grew louder... The monster now running after its prey.
Despite not being the stealthiest or even fastest of his group, years of experience and the power he had developed allowed the currently invisible Schoen to lead this retreat. This gave him a privileged "view" of what was happening around him, his ears picking up on the sounds of his team dying. Clearly they were being attacked by more than just the large reptile, as he heard someone shout something about a "giant hound" as they died.
Seeing how bad things were and how disastrous this attack could be he attempted to cast [Message] to some of the people in the camp. Yet this did not take and he could tell that it wasn't because of the magic - there was simply no one for it to reach.
Eventually, the Holocaust Scripture's Vice-Captain broke through the denser trees, arriving at the clearing where the camp he had been trying to reach rested, and what he saw was disturbing to say the least. The sturdy wooden walls had been blown apart, and many of the tents and temporary shelters had met a similar fate.
More importantly, a large portion of the area was frozen over. Then his pursuers broke through the trees as well, these being a large black hound and the massive reptile itself. Schoen jumped back as they appeared, at least wanting some distance from the beasts, when a small form dropped from the reptile's back. Much to his shock it was a small dark elf, with mismatched blue and green eyes.
"And done~!" Aura confidently announced with a wide smile.
"...!"
Those eyes were, without a doubt, a mark of the royal elven bloodline, and quite the skilled tamer at that to be able to command those beasts and probably whatever had destroyed his camp. Gulping, Schoen remained visibly composed, but he knew that if this child was as capable as she seemed and felt to his senses she was an Outlier. And from what those beasts had done, so were they. Had the Elf King's elite finally acted?
Steeling himself, he dropped the invisibility, which he recognized was doing him no favors, and did his best to push his concerns aside to think of the best way to flee this situation. No matter what, his superiors needed to be warned...
"Aura-sama. Cocytus-sama is done. As discussed half have been spared and are now running back to their main force." A voice came from behind him, along with a chill.
Turning to the side, his attention was split between the elf and the new arrival. Schoen saw a woman of icy pale skin and light ice-blue hair, wearing garments similar to those he heard about from the nation to the south, yet she was covered in an air of frost that told him that she wasn't human either, and also a powerful being.
"Alright. I'll finish up here then." Aura calmly said.
"My apologies. But from what we gathered this man is of some importance to the enemy, and should be allowed to flee."
"Oh~? Darn..."
The calm, nonchalant tones of both figures finally caused Schoen to snap as his usually calm and composed demeanor broke, venting a rather desperate and confused sentiment.
"Just who are you people!?"
"Hm~? Oh! I am Aura Bella Fiora, one of the servants of the great Sorcerer King, Ainz Ooal Gown." Aura proudly announced.
"W-What?" Schoen mumbled, stunned at the revelation.
"The Elf Country is now a vassal state of the Sorcerer Kingdom, so its lands are under the protection of the Sorcerer King himself. So go back and tell your superiors that an attack on those under the protection of Ainz Ooal Gown will be paid in kind."
The dreadful, even catastrophic implications of what he had just heard were enough to send Schoen running. More than ever he had to survive and pass on what he had seen and learned. Schoen was certain that the Theocracy needed to pull its forces away from the war with the Elf Country as soon as possible. Surely sooner or later, the Sorcerer Kingdom would be raiding the Theocracy's domain.
Again he tried to contact people with [Message] and only after five attempts did he get in contact with someone in the field. Learning that these attacks were happening on a large scale and that word had already been sent to the Theocracy itself, there were bigger things to worry about now.
Unbeknownst to him, the Sorcerer King had deployed several NPCs to assist the elven fighters to not only push back the Theocracy, but also make it clear who now protected the Elf Country. These localized and devastating attacks, sent what was spared of the Theocracy's forces into a frantic retreat. In just a few hours the war between the Slane Theocracy and Elf Country was basically over.
As one war moved towards conclusion, one continued raging on. At least that is what one expected from the Baharuth Empire's campaign in the Re-Estize Kingdom, but "war" wasn't the best word to describe it. It had less fighting than one would expect, and while blood was shed on both sides, it was mostly on the Kingdom's side since they were out-done in many ways by the Empire's forces.
Bolstered by undead, a dragon, and their elite magical caster units led by the Empire's Imperial Court Wizard Fluder Paradyne, they dominated all of the battles they were engaged in. However, a large portion of the conflict was marked by people who willingly surrendered to the Empire.
The misdeeds of the noblemen, several rumors covertly spread throughout the Kingdom by the Golden Princess herself, and other means like bribery, had turned a large portion of the Kingdom's population against that what they had called home for so long, and now saw the Empire as liberators.
It was the Empire's intention to reach every corner of the Kingdom, and by now they reached the small territory of Völkchenheim. Like many others, they had no wish to fight against what was coming. They were too small and weak to try, even if they wished to, so they would instead bend knee to the Empire. There was however some concern over who would greet their liberators, but eventually it was decided that their heir the young Torkel Karan Dale Völkchenheim would shoulder that duty.
So it was that Torkel, accompanied by his bodyguard Andre and a few others of some significance in his family's domain in the respect they held from the population moved in three carriages to the edge of their territory. It was a simple dirt road, but the most likely path the Empire would take. There they stopped and exited their carriages, with Torkel, Andre, and the others standing in front, looking into the distance upon the imperial battalion's approach.
"If I may say young master, you're looking rather mature right now." Andre said in a low, proud tone.
"At ease, Andre. At ease. I can't laugh right now, I need to remain composed." Torkel said, letting out a sigh that betrayed his nerves.
"My apologies. I just wanted to say, that I am here for whatever may come."
"I know, and thank you. Who knows if this goes well, I may finally work up the courage to speak to Nabe again." Torkel chuckled back.
"One thing at a time, young master." Andre said with a whimsical smile.
"..."
Torkel was about to retort, when something large flew over the people waiting for the Empire's arrival. Startling the horses, they needed to quickly rush to grab their reigns, but this panic was further added when whatever had arrived crashed onto the ground several feet in front of them.
Placing himself in front of Torkel, Andre steeled himself while giving his superior and the others time to do the same. Especially when whatever this was had come from the direction of their land. Then a massive tail sliced through the dust cloud that had risen up from the crash.
All eyes widened and mouths went agape, as before them a massive Frost Dragon sat up upon its haunches, the creature flapping its winds to further disperse the dust before turning its piercing gaze to the humans before it.
"I am Munuinia Ilyslym, envoy of the Baharuth Empire." The dragon announced.
The humans looked amongst each other, concerned about keeping the horses in place, in awe and fear of the beast and looking at each other to see who would speak, all the while Munuinia let out a gust of cold air, frustrated with this entire situation. From what Demiurge told her she was going to a war, and while she didn't expect much, she hoped for a chance to relieve some of her frustrations and show some good work. Yet she did little actual fighting. It was more akin to "culling", or like now acting as a messenger.
"Speak, humans. The Empire doesn't wish to spill blood needlessly, yet there is little to be done for those that can't even speak for themselves." Munuinia added in thinning patience.
"Uhm... I-I am Torkel Karan Dale Völkchenheim, of the Völkchenheim family. I speak for myself and for my people." The young noble announced, taking a few steps forward.
"One that can speak. Very well, Torkel. And? What do you have to say for yourself and your people." The dragon asked, now with a more relaxed tone.
"We mean no harm to the Empire. We aren't hostile. We simply want this to be over, so that we can once again live in peace."
A barely contained sigh escaped Munuinia's lips, her head turning slightly to the side to see the approaching battalion that would arrive within moments. Her mind momentarily entertained the idea of killing these humans, then lying about how they declared their intention to fight. It would certainly help to alleviate her boredom and frustrations, but she knew better. She might be able to lie to the humans, but not to Demiurge.
"How very dull. Very well, human. I can tell that you do not lie. Nor do any of those present seem to hold any belief contrary to your own. You and yours shall be spared."
A collective sigh of relief was shared by all those present, everyone congratulated and thanked Torkel who despite everything, seemed as surprised and relieved as the rest of them. Their feeling of relief didn't last long, as the imperial battalion arrived. A portion of it going around the dragon and flanking the carriages.
From behind the Frost Dragon then came a small group of horsemen with the one leading them being a man of clear noble descent, with a fairly pleasant smile on his face, as he stopped before Torkel and looked upon the people of the Kingdom.
"Greetings. I am Raye Azel Nis Tierref, General of the Eighth Legion of the Imperial Army." The man proudly announced.
"No need for your prattle. They don't wish to fight us." Munuinia curtly informed.
"Oh? You yield?" The general asked looking at Torkel, who he knew of to an extent thanks to information from their spies.
"Yes. We simply wish for peace."
"Hm. An understandable and wise decision. I can see why you are the heir to these lands Torkel Karan Dale Völkchenheim." The general remarked, surprising the young nobleman.
"You know of me?"
"We are very well informed. Enough that despite this welcome, I still need to see the actual ruler of this land, your father. Would you be so kind as to take us there?"
"...!"
Just then Torkel froze, because something in his mind almost made him recoil from this Raye's pleasant request. Perhaps something in his smile or his tone, Torkel wasn't sure, but he knew that now was not the time to falter.
"Ahem~! O-Of course. Please follow us. If you wish you can ride in the carriage with us."
"While that offer is appreciated, but that won't be necessary."
Now that it was clear violence wouldn't be necessary, everyone returned to their mounts and carriages and began moving. The battalion accompanied them with Munuinia flying in another direction where she might actually have something to do. In his carriage, Torkel thought back to the he got from Raye, but given the situation he attributed it to his nerves and pushed them aside for the best of his people.
What Torkel did not know, but managed to pick up on, was that General Raye Azel Nis Tierref was a rather twisted man. Unlike his peers, he had been enamored with the Sorcerer Kingdom ever since reports of the Katze Plains Massacre reached him. As such, he was more than willing to make use of the undead and Frost Dragon that were made available for this campaign.
Yet he found himself massively disappointed with how things were going. Yes, his sorties were frighteningly successful, with entire territories surrendering without a fight, but he had come for blood and fun. And so far he had seen very little of either. If not for the punishment he might receive, he had better ideas for what to do with the simpletons that covered this land.
Thanks to Raye's true professional levels of restraint, when the battalion finally arrived at the home of the true ruler of the land, things were discussed and concluded amiably, so that just like many before them the territory of Völkchenheim was swiftly annexed by the Empire. A storm moved in not long after, bringing rain and wind to a large portion of the Re-Estize and Sorcerer Kingdoms fouling the general's already disappointed mood...
With the storm reaching the capital of the Sorcerer Kingdom, E-Rantel's gloomier tone mirrored Ainz's mood as an already boring day concluded. Sitting upon his throne, the Sorcerer King handed some papers over to the Homunculus Maid standing to his left. As his latest meeting came to an end, the maid dismissed with a wave of his hand, so that the Overlord could get a brief moment to himself.
While most of the maids were usually reluctant to do so, since he gave her the tasks of organizing his paperwork, other assorted documents, and books it made for a perfect way to be free of their presence. Breathing a sigh of relief to relax his weary mind, his eyes trailed up the windows as rain poured down upon them.
Perhaps he could deal with the storm over his portion of the city. It was a simple enough thing to do, but after some consideration he decided against it. Rain was a natural and needed part of life, and despite the glomm he much enjoyed seeing it. Especially when back in his old world it was acidic in nature.
Honestly, he was simply bored, with his duties as King being mundane and monotonous when compared to the thrill from watching the Rylen and Shalltear match. A thrill that had sadly died down, but did little to mitigate his curiosity born from it, and the desire to learn more about the Espada and Aizen.
Indeed he wanted to speak to Aizen again. Despite the tension, he saw the Shinigami as someone he could talk more normally with and that was a rare commodity nowadays. Ainz would never admit it, but such a big fight, while it placed a strain on his emotional inhibitor from seeing Shalltear being attacked, it even made him want to experience a fight against these individuals. It reawakened a competitive spirit he had not felt since his PvP days in YGGDRASIL, continually simmering just below the surface...
"Ainz-sama, it is me Albedo." A voice then suddenly came from beyond the doors, along with a knock.
"Umu. You may enter." Ainz stoically relented.
Opening the door, the Guardian Overseer entered the room and promptly closed it behind her. Gracefully walking up to the throne, she bowed before Ainz, who promptly motioned for her to rise.
"I bring reports from both the Elf Country and the Baharuth Empire." Albedo announced in her trademark dutiful and professional tone.
"Go on."
"As expected, the attacks headed by both Aura and Cocytus has sent the Theocracy's forces into retreat. As per your wishes approximately half of those forces were spared, but this number was reduced further when in their panic some fell to the dangers of the forest."
"Hmm... That is their own fault, so I don't see it as being an issue. What about the elves? How have they reacted to this assistance?"
"It seems that some were unnerved with the undead we loaned them, but were quick to adjust, given what they were used for, and the assurances that they would be taken back, so as to not contaminate their lands. That aside, they were very thankful for our assistance, and it seems that both Aura and Mare are very popular among them, despite the initial concerns of their eyes perhaps indicating a connection to their former King."
Holding himself back from letting out a cheer, Ainz was delighted at the news regarding the twins. Something he had wanted for a long time was for them to be able to interact with those of their own kind, especially when they were still so young. So while things going well with the Elf Country was very important news, the news regarding the twins made the Overlord very happy, his emotional inhibitor notwithstanding.
"Umu. Make sure that Mare and Aura don't feel overwhelmed, but it is good that they have a chance to interact with their own kind. Regarding the undead, yes you can recall them as soon as they aren't needed. The Great Forest of Evasha can be of great benefit to us, so we don't want to risk damaging the environment." Ainz regally said.
"As you say, Ainz-sama. Also, I have also spoken with Demiurge and preparations for our advance upon the Slane Theocracy are nearly ready. All that will be needed is your word."
For a moment Ainz's eyes flashed crimson, with a dark aura enveloping his form, before his emotions were pushed Overlord could not deny that this was something he had been waiting for. Had he learned that the Theocracy were the ones who attacked Shalltear without Aizen's interference, he would have gone about things differently. That mattered little now, as they finally had a casus belli to turn their fangs upon them.
From where she stood, Albedo despite looking composed, she was ecstatic at what was about to come. She could see the silent intensity and brilliance of her beloved shining through in this moment and it gave her all the pleasure in the world knowing that finally he was going to get what he had been waiting for so, so long.
"Good. Tell Demiurge to continue preparations. In the meantime, we will do this in the proper way. Send official word to the Theocracy, informing them that their attack on our vassal state of the Elf Country will not be tolerated, and that such a bloody war will be paid in kind. They will have three days to prepare after the missive is successfully delivered." Ainz declared.
"As you wish, Ainz-sama~" Albedo said, clearly overjoyed by things.
"Umu. As a reminder to you, Demiurge, and the rest, while they have committed a sin against Nazarick, that is not the 'official' reason for why we are doing this. So I expect everyone to act accordingly. Not only that, but this is not a campaign to reduce their numbers; our intention is for them to bend the knee. So if they wish to surrender and not fight, they are free to do so..." Ainz explained, pausing as he shifted in his seat.
"...That said, they have attacked those we have welcomed into our fold and did commit a sin against us, so that if in the case of those that do fight against us, they can be dealt with as seen fit."
"Understood, Ainz-sama. What about those that in their despair give up after having fought us?"
"Do not be too insensitive about their plight, but I am certain there were many elves who gave up and were killed and enslaved nonetheless, so we can pay them back in a like manner. Speaking of which, any elves and other slaves found are to be freed and cared for. They should be treated as our own and returned to their homes if they so desire, in a similar fashion to what we did with those three elven slaves that now serve Mare." The Overlord replied.
"Ara~! You're making me swoon, Ainz-sama~!" Albedo remarked, blushing, while her wings flapped slightly.
"Uhm... Ahem... Am I, Albedo?"
"Indeed, Ainz-sama. It feels like it has been some time since I've seen you exuding such radiance. This one cannot help but be overwhelmed~!" Albedo replied, taking this chance to step closer to the Overlord, who in turn sank a little deeper into his throne.
"I apologize if you found my recent demeanor concerning, but I am fine, Albedo. Now, perhaps it would be best for you to take a step back, as we still have business to discuss." Ainz said with hand raised, to ensure she remained.
"Oh~! My apologies, Ainz-sama. I have overstepped my boundaries." The succubus apologetically remarked, quickly moving back.
"Umu. Regardless, you are not entirely wrong in your assessment of my situation. I am indeed pleased to know that we will finally have a chance to strike back against those that attacked Shalltear."
"Thank you for understanding, Ainz-sama. I take pride in being able to tell how my beloved in feeling."
"Hm..."
Relieved that the situation was contained, Ainz allowed himself to fully sink into his throne, further considering what he had done to Albedo. How she acted now because of it and also how things, especially his self-restraint, might have been different if he had a flesh-and-blood body. Indeed, he could imagine that many things would be different if that was the case.
He probably would have already acted on Albedo's constant advances, for better or worst of what that meant for the NPC and her creator, if not for his nature as an undead Overlord. This line of thought reminded him of Rylen and whatever he was, not to mention the fact that to Aura senses, Annika had a demonic feeling to her, while Jillur felt more like a demi-human.
Naturally he could think of this as some kind of concealment magic, but it could not be denied that Rylen's change went far beyond what simple concealment could do. He had essentially transformed, and by extension rejuvenated himself and chanced in nature. An Overlord, with a flesh-and-blood humanoid body, or a human with an Overlord body, either way it was beyond fascinating. Such a thing should have been impossible, and yet he could not deny what he had seen for himself.
"...That aside, what of Aizen? Has he said anything else?" Ainz plainly asked.
"He has not."
"Oh? A shame. I wished to speak with him again." Ainz mumbled, as if speaking to more to himself than Albedo.
"I-If you wish I can send word to him." Albedo pointed out in mild confusion.
"Hm? O-Oh, yes. Ahem. That would be for the best. There are several things I want to discuss with him... Actually, I have an idea. As we have come together with the Holy Kingdom in 'friendship' as some might say, so why not have the Sorcerer King go to and visit this allied nation? It would certainly better our image." The Overlord suggested, visibly surprising the succubus.
"Forgive me Ainz-sama, but I do not understand. If it is just to speak, can't the same arrangement as before be used?"
"We certainly could, but I prefer this new approach. Especially when we went through the trouble of trying to take it over, and when that failed we came into this agreement. The least I can do is appear there in person. But more importantly, it gives me an opportunity to speak with Aizen about the things that I wish to discuss." Ainz explained.
"I see. So, not only do you get to speak to him, but this also works as way to improve our image. Understood." Albedo said in an awed tone.
"Hm. Good. Send word to our representatives in the Holy Kingdom, and have this idea shared with Aizen and his Queen. This can be a great event held between both nations, but taking place in their lands."
"If that is your wish, I shall take the necessary steps so that they are aware of your intentions, Ainz-sama."
"Good work as always, Albedo. Dismissed." Ainz said in a pleased tone.
"You humble me, Ainz-sama." Albedo happily said, taking a bow before leaving.
Pushing himself up from his throne, Ainz went to the window, taking in the rain and the occasional bolt of lightning. He was pleased that he managed to come up with the idea of this big event on the spot and make it sound believable to Albedo. He agreed that speaking with Aizen in private was a perfectly acceptable way to get his point across. Still, he was curious and despite not being all that comfortable with public scenes, Ainz was willing to do it to take care of his burning curiosity that wouldn't let up.
On her end, Albedo was happy that Ainz had gone against the idea of him meeting Aizen in private. She was still fairly suspicious of the Shinigami, but the fact that they would be meeting in public lessened the chances of him trying anything. It also gave her an excuse to pick the people that would go with Ainz and by extension would keep him safe from anything Aizen or the Espada might try. Even if the odds of which was lower by now, she could not help but worry for her beloved master.
Night had fallen over the land, but in the Theocracy things were anything but calm due to the situation in the Elf Country. Their forces were still in full retreat, but despite this once all the reports were gathered via [Message] and advanced scouts, the Supreme Executive Council and Captain of the Black Scripture Marcus Septimius Amor gathered to discuss everything known.
The terrifying summary was thus; a large portion of the forces committed to the Elf War were annihilated and the Elf Country was now a Sorcerer Kingdom vassal-state. Meaning the Theocracy's attack on the elves was going to be repaid in kind, and war was coming to their lands.
For all the accumulated wisdom and knowledge in the room, the controlled panic and fear was clear among them, as their nation was about to face its greatest threat since the advent of the Evil Deities. Marcus appeared the most clam in the room, but this was mostly due to not having to speak. As they spoke amongst themselves, he simply waited to be needed in his capacity as the Black Scripture's leader.
"Let us cease and desist. I think we have rambled on for long enough." Zinedine Delan Guelfi, the Cardinal of Water sighed.
"I agree. Perhaps we let the suddenness of the situation get the better of us, although our losses and the beings behind them cannot be denied. These are beings that without a doubt are 'Outliers' who have more than likely stepped beyond the Realm of Heroes." Berenice Nagua Santini, the Cardinal of Fire grimly said.
"It was my belief that we had already reached that conclusion, if the events at the Katze Plains were any indication. Ainz Ooal Gown is a monster who commands other monsters in turn, both in nature and power. On the other hand, according to what the Captain told us, the Espada are commanded by a man who himself is also within that same realm. It is clear that times are once again changing, and it's my belief that we're about to face one of the greatest challenges in our nation's history." Raymond Zarg Lauransan, the Cardinal of Earth and commander of the Six Scriptures pointed out.
"That is nothing new to us, but thank you for putting things into greater perspective. I'm very much in agreement. We did our best with the elf war, but the time to look inwards has come." Yvon Jasna Delacroix, the Cardinal of Light stoically said.
"There's little choice in that matter. Our foray in the Dragon Kingdom ended in nothing but losses, from what we can tell we lost more than half of the forces we sent to the Elf Country, and now the few nations that we might have called upon are under someone else's thumb. There is little else to do than look inwards." Berenice remarked in an empty tone.
"Exactly. It falls to us to gather our resources to combat this threat." Dominic Ihre Partouche, the Cardinal of Wind, resolutely said.
"That being case, perhaps it would be for the best for me to dismiss myself from this meeting, and call upon someone far stronger and wiser than any of us." Maximilian Oreio Lagier, the Cardinal of Darkness, matter-of-factly suggested.
"..."
Zinedine went to speak, when suddenly and uncharacteristically one of the captains of the guard walked into the room.
"My apologies, but there is someone in the courtyard! He says that he comes from the Sorcerer Kingdom, demanding an audience with our nation's leadership."
"...!"
The Supreme Executive Council exchanged concerned looks, but understanding the situation's seriousness, they and Marcus rushed to one of the large windows that gave them a view to the courtyard. They saw at other windows and balconies other people of influence that had also been warned, and looking down they saw a massive golden dragon with antler-like horns occupying a section of the courtyard. Standing in front of it was a man that could only be described as a butler. A most curious sight indeed.
The fact that these individuals had gotten so close and managed to land here was an indication to those present that were learned in magic that they had most likely used 9th-tier or higher magic to get so close to the capital without being detected. Adding on to this already extremely concerning situation, among the guards surrounding these new arrivals was "Zesshi", the half-elf nonchalantly standing just a few feet away from the butler wearing her usual garments, with her scythe resting on her shoulder.
"It would seem that enough people have gathered." Sebas mused in a low professional tone, scanning the windows and balconies.
"Oh? Are we starting this~?" Zesshi mused with a head-tilt.
"People of the Slane Theocracy please attend carefully. The message that follows is vital to your people's future. My name is Sebas Tian, I come to you as both butler and envoy of the Sorcerer King, Ainz Ooal Gown. Recently the Elf Country came under the protection of His Majesty as a vassal-state, and yet continued to be attacked and preyed upon by the Theocracy. As such, an offense against it is an offense against the Sorcerer Kingdom, which will be paid in kind. That is why in 3-days time, our armies will advance upon your lands to correct this offense. You are advised to surrender and swear fealty to His Majesty if you wish to survive. Such is His Majesty's benevolence."
"How kind..." Zesshi sighed, visibly underwhelmed by how this had gone.
Looking up and taking in the faces of the people looking down upon the scene unfolding in the courtyard, Sebas noted the concerned and even desperate expressions in their faces. While that didn't outright please him, he felt little pity for them either. Not only were they the enemy, but were behind the Shalltear Incident. An event he knew caused their master a great deal of pain and frustration.
With his duty concluded, the butler jumped back to his "dragon mount", with the beast releasing a mighty roar. As if on queue, a massive black-purplish portal opened in the sky above them, with the dragon taking flight with enough force to shatter many of the surrounding windows, before taking to the air and vanishing into the closing portal.
For all those watching this unfold, there was simply silence with fear upon their faces. The few exceptions to this were those among the Supreme Executive Council and Marcus, with Zinedine being the one that got the others' attention. Instructing them to return to the meeting chamber, the situation demanded that things needed to be put in motion right away.
Arriving at the chamber doors, there was a rather large group trying to gain entry. Upon questioning the guards present, it seemed that while they were preoccupied the Pontifex Maximus had already returned, occupying the chamber and allowing only a select few inside. Naturally the Council and Marcus were among those allowed to proceed, so after a moment to compose themselves, the group entered.
The doors closed behind them and indeed inside sitting at the head of the table was the Pontifex Maximus. Yet more importantly standing behind him, shrouded in black robes and hood, with golden shoulder guards, was the unmistakable form of Rufus, the undead heralded as the First Follower of Surshana.
"..."
Berenice went to speak, when the Pontifex raised a hand to silence her.
"I came here as it was assumed that this would be the place that you would return to after your meeting was interrupted. The time for talking will come shortly. As it stands others have been called to a meeting in the Grand Hall, we will be moving there shortly. But I can tell you that I saw the display at the courtyard and that I've already sent out orders for things to be put in motion to assist in our defenses. Now is not the time for fear. It is the time for us, as one of the oldest nations in the land, to stand and show why it is that we have resisted for so long."
The sentiment was clear across the room and some relief could be seen on the faces of the Council, because it did help to hear these words from the Pontifex Maximus. Even more so when standing behind him was Rufus, one of the closest links they had to the Six. Shortly thereafter, the Theocracy began to move into a defensive state, wanting to make the most out of the 3-days the Sorcerer Kingdom had given them, so that when the time came they would be as prepared as they could be...
Night eventually turned to day, and during the morning the Doppelgänger known as Claude Raunales, brought word to the Holy King and Queen of Ainz's intention to visit the Roble Holy Kingdom, in a good-will gesture of their collaboration. Naturally, such grand news immediately justified gathering Holy King Aizen, Holy Queen Calca, Prime Minister Amelia, Prince Caspond, and one of the Twin Wings Kelart Custodio, all of whom sitting around a meeting table, with Calca sitting at its head.
"This was certainly unexpected." Caspond curiously remarked.
"Agreed. The establishment of embassies and our current working relationship regarding goods and undead labor was one thing, but this goes beyond that." Amelia added, eyeing Aizen who lightly shook his head indicating that this was not of his design.
"But according to the missive, while he wishes for this to happen 'soon', since he asks for us to host the event, we are being given the freedom to organize and decide when this will begin." Kelart professionally added.
"We need to send word back asking for details regarding who will accompany him, since we may need to accommodate more than just the Sorcerer King." Calca calmly mused.
"His intentions were rather vague, so further communication is certainly necessary. If anything we should take advantage of this showing of goodwill to perhaps expand this event to more than a single day. Perhaps have it happen in location in both the North and South, to solidify what our situation with the people there." Aizen said.
"A good idea, but that will depend on his 'goodwill' gesture." Amelia skeptically argued.
"My beloved has a point. If the Sorcerer King is willing to visit, perhaps we will see benefit in staying for a few days." The Queen said in mild optimism.
"I will add that to our own missive then." Kelart said, jotting notes down upon a nearby parchment.
"Also, perhaps we should ask for him to try and keep the undead in his entourage low in numbers. Gods know it was difficult to have the population accept laborers. While the Sorcerer King is himself undead it can't be avoided, but perhaps something can be done about whatever aides he brings?" Caspond suggested.
"Hm. It will need to be carefully discussed, but indeed we don't need to put any more pressure upon the people. That said, it does seem like we are all in agreement regarding this event taking place." Calca remarked, clearly pleased.
"I'm sure my sister would have much to say if she had been able to be here, but I do think that we all see the benefit in this." Kelart pointed out as she continued taking notes.
"For both sides. As a visit like this, will better the Sorcerer King's image." Aizen added with his usual charming smile.
"Then it is decided. We will hold an event with the Sorcerer King. Now, let's move on to the specifics of what we shall have in our response to his request. As already stated we'll propose for this to be a multi-day endeavor, politely requesting for his entourage to be 'among the living', so as to not create tension among the population. We should also ask if he and his attendants have any preferences regarding accommodations, food, and the like. Feel free to note anything we may miss, Kelart." Calca said in a determined tone.
"Of course."
What followed was a rather lengthy discussion of how this event should proceed, since even if the Sorcerer King did not agree to a multi-day affair, several aspects would need to be worked out from the start. Especially when the capital would be the one receiving the Overlord. Coordination between embassies were needed, gathering of resources for anything that might need to be built, and for all the goods needed to feed everyone that would come to this event.
While no one would say it, one of this meeting's positives was that Remedios was not present. While she was still a valued asset, her outspoken personality caused issues. Luckily, as some might say, she had been tasked with training several rookie Paladins the day before, so she would be rather busy. In addition, as per Aizen's orders 8th-Espada Cayo Ozzik Gantz stayed very much close to her before, during, and after this.
As a result of his efforts, on this particular morning, Cayo found himself waking up in a bed in a curtained off room. The floor was a mess of garments and armor, while sounds of a shower could be heard from another room, and for the Espada his had been a wild night. While he wanted to pat himself on the back he doubted that it was his quips that had done the trick.
More than likely it was a combination of influence of his "aura", and her pure frustration and primal urging that had gotten Remedios in his bed. He was quite happy with how things had gone. For a virgin and someone so weak when compared to himself, Remedios certainly didn't lack for spirit, which went hand in hand with her brash and headstrong personality.
Cayo had to give Remedios the complements that she deserved. Her skill when it came to using her healing and rejuvenating abilities really shined, due in her ability to be with him the entire night, outside of some necessary breaks. Sitting up in bed, the sheets covering the lower half of his body, Cayo scratched his head and then looked at the door to the bathroom from where a towel covered Remedios emerged, her expression quickly removing any smirk that he might have had.
"You will speak of this to no one."
"Huh. I was hoping that you would look less angry." Cayo remarked with a sigh.
"Do you think that this changes anything? You pig!" Remedios growled, leaning down to pick up her sword and lifting it to the Espada's neck.
"You should already know better than to think that you can do anything to me. And I have no intentions of telling anyone about this..." Cayo tried to speak, when he felt the sword press up against his neck.
"You must think that I'm stupid. I can tell very well what kind of man you are, Espada."
"Fair enough. Still, this is hardly productive. You can't tell me that what you did was against your will. You were just as keen on this as I was, but if this is the last that you want to see of me in this capacity that is fine."
Gritting her teeth, Remedios let out a frustrated cry before swinging her blade and ramming it into the wall, causing her towel to fall revealing her naked form as she sat by the edge of the bed.
"Everyone thinks me a fool..." She sighed in a pained, frustrated voice.
"..."
Cayo fell silent since was not what he had expected to happen. The part with the sword felt like something she would do, as would her storming off after getting dressed, and perhaps her spitting on him. This however was not something he planned for. Looking around for a moment, feeling nothing but awkwardness and a desire to leave, Cayo did his best to push aside these feelings and try to act more like someone of his age and station. He pushed himself next to Remedios, before placing a hand on her shoulder, which she was quick to brush aside.
"Don't touch me."
"As you wish. But if we're being honest, people don't think that you are a fool. They know you are one." Cayo said, at which point she spat on him.
"Like I said, a pig! You take my dignity and now this!?"
"Your dignity? Pffft~! Whatever... Just let me speak. If you take a moment to think, there is a reason why people to think that of you. You're a great fighter Remedios, one of the more talented I've met and certainly the strongest in this land before we came around, but that's all. You speak out when you aren't asked, you're rude to people in the most inconvenient of times, and you see every outsider as a problem. Including me and the Espada, who saved you from that demon and beastmen army. So yeah! It's easy to think you a fool!" Cayo snapped back.
"I am one of the Queen's Twin Wings! The grandmaster of the Roble Holy Kingdom's Paladin Order and a member of the Nine Colors. It's my duty to be the shield between my people and the outside."
"Not exactly. Not anymore. Remedios, the Holy Kingdom is expanding. So outsiders will come, and the Queen will have to have calm, polite conversations with other people. She even has a King now to help her with that. You can't deny that she's matured thanks to Aizen's help. That she now has a solid foundation to flourish." Cayo pointed out.
"...A-And then what would you have me do? Be silent and leave? Let you, Aizen and the rest of the Espada take over?" Remedios asked, looking visibly overwhelmed by the conversation.
"Again, no! Start using that head of yours for once. You're one of her best friends, a sister-like figure, so be there for her, but for gods' sake remember that she can stand on her own! That she has more people backing her, so that you can be your best self... Her... guardian angel."
Remedios stopped and turned to look out the window as a sigh escaped her lips. While she passed her hands through her hair, she felt like this man had just told her what her sister had been saying for years. Words that she heard but only partially adhered to in order to make sure that she was the best she could possibly be. All that time training, all that time commanding her people, all that time fighting and it did her so little.
"I'm leaving." Remedios said with a sigh, rising to her feet.
"I... Oh, fine. Alright."
"I told you not to tell anyone, and that still stands. Don't be a pig."
With this final remark, Remedios said little else before putting her armor back on, retrieving her sword from the wall and departing, leaving a rather confused Cayo in the room, still sitting on the bed as he had simply watched her go about her things.
"That went well." Alvis remarked, appearing by the open door as if from thin air.
"What did you hear?" Cayo asked while rolling his eyes.
"Not much, after what I'm assuming to be her sword hitting the wall." Alvis replied, eyeing the mark her sword left.
"Good. But yes, I think I got through to her."
"That's good to know. I'm sure many people will be happy when they find out they don't need to worry so much about her."
"Agreed. Now, give me some time. I need to get dressed."
Cayo wouldn't see Remedios for the rest of the day, but he would come to learn that she had met with Calca and Kelart in the afternoon for a private audience. While he didn't know what was said during that meeting, it seemed that both the Queen and her sister were left looking surprised and relieved when things were said and done.
Indeed, it did seem that his words finally gotten through to her, and as he was about to settle down for that evening, he noticed a letter had been delivered to his room. Upon opening it a familiar scent came to him as he read a message that merely said, "Perhaps the company of a scoundrel such as yourself is not the worst thing. Do with that as you will." An oddly relaxed smile spread over his lips as he realized that he had more influence with her than he thought, at least he had gone from being referred to as a pig...
