Chapter 15 The Aftermath Meeting Part 2

(Armin's POV)

This turn of events catches me completely off guard. Eren's sudden elevation to the position of premier following Zachary's death, declared by Queen Historia, is a revelation that leaves me reeling. And the introduction of unfamiliar technologies that we've never encountered before only adds to my confusion. When did our military acquire such advanced equipment? The rapid pace of change in our world is both exhilarating and disconcerting, leaving me grappling with a sense of unease and uncertainty about what lies ahead.

Jean's incredulous voice shatters the tense silence, his disbelief reflecting my own inner turmoil. "To think that Eren and Gloria orchestrated these negotiations without consulting us..."

His words strike a chord within me, stirring up a whirlwind of questions and doubts. "What have we been doing all this time?" I voice aloud, my tone heavy with uncertainty. "And where do we fit into their grand scheme?"

I glance around the room, noting the shared apprehension etched on the faces of my comrades. Mikasa's gaze meets mine, her concern mirroring my own. The absence of Connie, off seeking solace in Ragako, leaves a noticeable void among us.

Eren's authoritative voice cuts through the swirling thoughts, redirecting our focus to the matter at hand. "Now, let's address the issue of the old military regime," he declares, his gaze unwavering. "I assume former Commander Pyxis wishes to speak with me. Fetch him immediately."

As a soldier hastens to carry out Eren's command, I can't shake the feeling that we're teetering on the edge of a precipice, with uncertain futures looming before us.

"Welcome, former Commander Pyxis," Eren greets, his tone measured.

Pyxis's calm demeanor belies the weight of his words as he speaks. "I was under the impression that one had to become one of the nine to become human again, and yet here I am."

"Our ultimate objective is twofold: to rid the world of Titans and to safeguard our nation from those who seek its destruction," Eren explains, his voice resolute. "While I may not have initially aligned with Zeke's ideology, it's imperative that we earn the trust of our adversaries to discern their true intentions."

Pyxis absorbs Eren's words before posing his next question. "I see... Then tell me, what is the plan? Is this uprising against the military your true objective?"

"Perhaps we're not so different after all; we both seek what's best for Paradis," Eren acknowledges, his voice tinged with a sense of understanding. "However, the distinctions between the old and new regime are rooted in several key factors."

"Firstly, there's the issue of trust with our allies. I understand your concerns regarding Zeke and Yelena's potential manipulation of me, which led to the arrest of the volunteers," Eren continues. "Moreover, the self-serving motives of the Military Police blinded them to the dangers of consuming the wine laced with Zeke's spinal fluid."

"Secondly, many within the old regime have failed to grasp the gravity of our situation. We've conducted surveys among the civilian population outside the military, and their fear of impending attacks from other nations is palpable," he elaborates. "People are rallying behind us because they're tired of government inaction and years wasted in complacency."

"And finally, it's essential to note that all our actions are carried out under the directives of the queen herself," Eren asserts. "Even amidst her pregnancy, Historia shares our frustration with the military's stagnation and reluctance to act. Hence, while my actions may have been improvised, they were not without her approval."

As Commander Pyxis's questioning lingers in the air, a nagging sense of unease settles within me. Eren's demeanor and actions have undergone a noticeable shift, straying from his previous fervent cries to eradicate the Titans. This newfound complexity in his character leaves me wondering: what has transpired to bring about such a change? The Eren I once knew was a relentless force driven by a singular desire to eliminate our enemies, but now, he seems driven by a broader vision for Paradis.

Commander Pyxis's gaze fixes upon Eren, his expression inscrutable as he absorbs Eren's explanation. "Very well. I appreciate you sharing your plan with me. But do you truly believe you can achieve this? Can you save the entire island and keep it united?"

Eren's response is measured yet resolute. "Since my meeting with my wife, Gloria Tybur, I've unlocked the memories of the previous kings spanning over 2000 years. Not all of them are steeped in bloodshed; some offer valuable insights on how to strengthen our nation. The narrative of the world's hatred towards us is a fabrication perpetuated by other nations. Much like the false belief that we were the last remnants of humanity and Titans were our enemies."

Pyxis absorbs Eren's words before conceding, "I see. I may not agree entirely, but I can't deny the validity of your perspective. However, I cannot align myself with your new military, even if I were inclined to do so."

Understanding crosses Eren's features. "I understand. Your presence would be seen as a threat by those who oppose us, potentially inciting unrest. Instead of viewing you as an adversary, we will regard you and the remnants of the old regime as retired."

With a nod of acceptance, Pyxis is escorted away by the other Yeagerists. Sensing the weight of the moment, I feel a sudden urge to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the military room. Without a word, I turn and rush out, Jean and Mikasa close on my heels, their expressions mirroring my own turmoil.

"Wait, Commander Pyxis!" I call out, halting his departure. As he turns to face us, we offer a salute, a gesture of respect for his years of service and leadership.

"Oh, it's you. Armin Arlert, Jean Kirchstein, and Mikasa Ackermann. What brings you to approach me?" Pyxis inquires, his tone tinged with curiosity.

"We were present during the meeting, and we wanted to express our gratitude for everything you've done," I explain, feeling a sense of appreciation welling within me.

Pyxis listens quietly, his gaze thoughtful as memories of the past flicker behind his eyes. "My generation played a role in leading our people beyond the confines of the walls. Many of us struggled to accept the realities of the world beyond, clinging to our power and traditions with a stubbornness that ultimately led to the rise of figures like Eren and his followers," he reflects, his words heavy with introspection. "I don't hold them accountable for their actions. Perhaps we were too set in our ways to adapt to the changes unfolding around us."

Jean's frown deepens as Pyxis speaks of retirement. "So you're really going to step down..."

Pyxis offers a reassuring smile. "Do not fret over me, my young friends. It's time for a new generation to take the reins and steer our nation forward. I have faith in your abilities to shape the future of Paradis. As for me, I'll find solace in the quiet moments, far removed from the tumult of politics and conflict."

As Commander Pyxis bids us farewell and departs, we exchange a silent nod before turning back towards the meeting room. There's an unspoken understanding among us that we need to keep a close eye on Eren and the unfolding events. With each passing moment, the weight of our responsibilities weighs heavier on our shoulders.

Returning to the meeting room, we find ourselves once again amidst the hustle and bustle of strategizing and planning. Eren's presence looms large, his every move scrutinized as we attempt to decipher his intentions and motivations.

As we settle back into our seats, I can't shake the feeling that we're on the cusp of something monumental.

(Eren's POV)

As I observe my old friends rushing out in pursuit of Commander Pyxis, I make a conscious decision to remain focused on the task at hand. With the meeting still in session, there are pressing matters that demand our attention.

"We have several Marleyan soldiers in captivity, but are you suggesting that none of the former warriors are among them?" I query, directing my question to the assembled group.

Floch's response is laden with regret. "Forgive us for our oversight. It appears that they have all managed to escape, leaving only Zeke imprisoned," he admits somberly.

Louise chimes in, her voice tinged with concern. "Furthermore, Annie Leonhart has also broken free from the crystal that held her captive for four long years. She's nowhere to be found."

Gloria's brows furrow in response to this troubling revelation. "This poses a significant threat. If Annie Leonhart is at large, she undoubtedly poses a danger to our plans. We must remain vigilant."

"I disagree," I interject, my thoughts focused. "I believe Annie has likely fled the capital and is now in pursuit of her comrades. Her sole objective is to reunite with her father, and I doubt she poses an immediate threat to us here."

As I voice my assessment, I notice my three old friends returning to their seats, their expressions reflecting a mix of determination and concern. Gathering my thoughts, I press on to address another pressing matter.

"Now, onto the final issue: have there been any efforts to locate Commander Hange and Captain Levi?" I inquire, sensing a slight tension in the room.

Floch's response causes a ripple of discomfort among us. "The last sighting of them was when Hange falsified a report claiming Levi's demise. They then evaded capture and leaped into the water. Should we take any action against them?" he asks, his tone tinged with uncertainty.

Gloria interjects, her voice tinged with suspicion. "It's conceivable that they may seek to ally themselves with the remaining Marleyan forces in an attempt to thwart the Rumbling. Given Hange's reluctance to fully commit to our cause, it's not surprising that they would seek alternative means to oppose us."

I let out a weary sigh, contemplating our options. "Unless they've committed an act of treason, we'll leave them be. I doubt they possess the capability to halt the Rumbling," I conclude, resigned to the reality of the situation.

With the queen offering a few closing remarks, the meeting draws to a close. As Gloria and I make to leave, we're halted by the unexpected presence of Armin, Jean, and Mikasa, their expressions betraying a mixture of apprehension and determination.

"I assume you want to talk, as you always did?" I remark wearily, sensing the weight of their concern.

Armin wastes no time in addressing the pressing issue. "Regarding Commander Hange and Captain Levi, is it true they plan to align themselves with the remaining Marleyan forces to halt the Rumbling?" he inquires, his voice tinged with urgency.

"If we rely solely on the future I glimpsed four years ago, then yes, that would be their likely course of action. However, given our efforts to alter the course of events, I can't say for certain," I respond, my tone tinged with uncertainty.

"So you're not willing to halt the Rumbling under any circumstances?" Jean presses, his brow furrowing in concern.

"I'll only consider halting it if they pose a significant threat to our allied nations, which includes Hizuru, Stammer, and Valij, " I clarify, my resolve unwavering. "If you wish to delve deeper into this matter, join us at our residence. We can discuss it further there."

With a shared glance between them, Armin, Jean, and Mikasa nod in agreement, silently acknowledging our invitation. As Gloria and I make our way back to our residence, I can't help but feel a sense of relief knowing that Carla, our daughter, awaits our return. Despite the weight of our responsibilities, our family remains our foremost priority.

Here is a new chapter, Eren has now become the new premier. And there are more questions that needs to be answered and I hope you like this chapter.
