Disclaimer: I do not own the copyrights to any material presented in the episode that features Pocahontas nor do I intend to use this for profit in any way shape or form.
I would like to make one thing inescapibly clear. There will be no live action remake of Pocahontas because it's a historical event that happened in real life. Additionally there's already one from 2005 made by New Line Cinema known as the New World and it features Christian Bale (the voice of Thomas, he would play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the first installment of the Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman Begins that same year) as John Rolfe. Keep in mind that the 2005 movie is a boring mess as it lacks the soundtrack that would've been a saving grace in my opinion. Especially when it was composed by the late James Horner. The 1995 film may have done well in the box office, but it sparked outrage among the Native American community and it stirred up controversy due to the historical inaccuracies and it was seen by many Disney fans as the Disney animated feature that started the decline of the Disney Renaissance.
This episode is dedicated in memory of the men and women who worked on this film that are no longer with us.
Episode XVI (16): Of Spirit and Trust
Ratcliffe asked, "Yes?"
Maleficent stated, "We need you and the penguin servant, Marius to go to your home world. There is a small group of animals."
Ratcliffe asked, "Why do I need to capture this group? Send Clayton to do the job!"
"We already sent him and had him placed in the dungeon for his failure." said Jafar.
"With due respect, Dark Masters, I would rather fight savages than waste my time with petty animals."
"Those petty animals are actually the children we've been warning you and the others about," Maleficent clarified.
Ratcliffe asked, "Is it all right that if I kill them?"
Jafar answered, "No!"
Ratcliffe asked undignified, "What?! Why?!"
Even Turbo was confused. "We already asked Clayton to kill them. Why shouldn't Ratcliffe?"
Jafar answered, "Three of those brats are descendants of the three Walt Maidens of the pure lights of Kindness, Sincerity, and Dreams. I wanted to get more information from that magpie."
Marius announced, "I, Marius Oswald will be the one supervising some traps that will be used in capturing those brats. I also will be making sure that you don't mess up."
Ratcliffe argued, "I don't need help from a stupid penguin!"
Marius smacked the man in the face!
Turbo began laughing at this!
Ratcliffe caressed his cheek. "If I should agree to capture these children and bring them back to this castle-,"
Maleficent interrupted him, knowing what he was going to ask. "You will be rewarded with all the gold and treasures of this castle." But it was a lie. Unbeknownst to Ratcliffe, Maleficent's fingers were crossed behind her back.
Ratcliffe smiled, "All right. Let's go, Penguin."
Marius snarled, "It's Marius! You ignorant pig!"
As soon as Ratcliffe and Marius left, Turbo asked, "What do you plan to reward him with?"
"Nothing much," she answered slyly. "A little money and a few old castle treasures we have no further need for."
Turbo giggled, "The look on his face will be priceless!"
Frollo looked at Maleficent. "Whatever happened to having dignity?"
Jafar smiled. "No better way to be any more persuasive than by preying on one's weaknesses."
Turbo commented, "Ratcliffe has an avarice for gold."
"They all do," Frollo grumbled.
"Not us," said Maleficent. "Being of higher power, we have no interest in riches. That's what makes us better than all those lesser villains."
Jafar commented, "That penguin better not fail."
Turbo commented, "I don't think that he will fail."
"I would worry more about Ratcliffe than the penguin," Maleficent advised. "If he turns out to be as much of a disappointment as Gaston and Clayton, we may have to send Brandon next."
"We are running out of useful candidates," Jafar said, as though he was agreeing with her.
"No!" Turbo and Frollo shouted
Maleficent asked, "Why?!"
"I still don't trust the boy." Frollo answered.
"And you promised me I'd get a chance against those brats," Turbo complained.
Maleficent stated, "You will get your chance, Turbo. Be patient."
In response, Turbo grunted and turned away.
Maleficent muttered, "I don't understand why Grimhilde chose you."
Turbo answered, "I was chosen because she saw a small hint of herself in me."
Part of Turbo wanted Ratcliffe to fail. If that were to happen, he would finally get his chance to face the heroes. He was considering taking elaborate measures to make sure Ratcliffe would fail, but he started to worry that doing so would be grounds for losing his position as a Dark Master.
Besides, the time period of Ratcliffe's world was an important historical event, meaning Maleficent would do more than reprimand Turbo for changing the past in any way.
Turbo asked, "If he's put in chains and gagged, can I deal with them?"
"It is not your world to meddle with," Maleficent snapped. "You will stay here with us."
A smile crossed Jafar's face. "You know, those men will be doing us a service. With Ratcliffe subdued in the way Turbo mentioned, it'll be easy to have him sent to our dungeon."
Turbo asked, "Did you get to mesmerize that magpie?"
Jafar answered, "No. As a matter of fact, I wasn't able to touch any of those brats."
Turbo asked, "Are you serious?"
Jafar answered, "Yes."
Frollo groaned with frustration. "This is getting to be annoying."
"As powerful as we are, those children are proving to be stronger and smarter than we took them for," Maleficent stated. "We must be missing something. What is it?"
Jafar clarified, "That was after that magpie was protected by a barrier and my staff was destroyed by that barrier that backfired my spell meant for that girl! After wasting my third wish, I wasn't able to grab anyone or anything."
"I'm surprised you allowed yourself to give in to their jeers about you always being second," Turbo commented.
"I'm not," said Maleficent. "It is his weakness, after all."
"That's what makes those children so clever," Frollo was saying. "They know our weaknesses and can use that to their advantage. We need to figure out a way to do the same to them. Then maybe we can break them."
Maleficent demanded, "Turbo, find more information about them!"
Turbo grunted and left the throne room. On the way he thought to himself what he wouldn't give to show Maleficent a thing or two. But he knew that such action would be grounds for punishment.
As he began his research, he began looking for whatever weaknesses the heroes had. An idea came to him to use a loved one as means of incentive. Maybe to take one hostage or harm them in front of the heroes. It didn't work using the pets in that manner. Maybe it would work with a relative? He also began finding out what the heroes were most afraid of.
Turbo tried to access Zander's file and to his aggravation, there were no fears listed as if it was empty and he began to research his background and found something peculiar as he saw the words Hurricane Katrina.
Turbo began to research what happened on that day and he found some interesting news about Tiana dying in the hurricane.
In addition, the restaurant, Tiana's Palace, was destroyed in the hurricane.
Turbo smiled at this information and he cried, "Hey! I found something!"
"What is it?" Maleficent asked.
Turbo showed Maleficent the article that he was reading.
"A terrible loss for the family," she stated.
"Don't you see?" Turbo was asking. "That restaurant meant everything to Tiana. If it were to be destroyed again, the family wouldn't be able to cover the expenses to have it rebuilt again. The dream would die and the boy would break and never recover."
Jafar pointed out, "One problem. What do you mean again? The family was forced to evacuate to California. Did you know that Naveen and Tiana's son Raymond made sure that his parents' dream would flourish in California? and they successfully did so before his own death in October 2010."
Turbo looked down in dismay. "Right."
Jafar asked, "What about the other brats?"
"I'm still working," Turbo answered.
"Good," Jafar told him. "It'll give you something to do besides complain."
Turbo moved on to Natius's file.
Turbo found something about his father's side of his family and he discovered that Mulan was the matriarch of that family!
Turbo cried, "No way!"
"Now what?" Jafar asked.
"The flame brat," Turbo was saying, his father is Mulan's descendant."
Frollo stated, "That explains why that flame rodent has the element of Courage."
"The family has a long line of warriors," Maleficent added. "People who have served their countries."
Turbo found an article about Nature's paternal great grandfather Satoshi Takahashi.
As Turbo continued his research, the other Dark Masters continued to wait for Ratcliffe.
Turbo asked, "What about those three brats that escaped?"
"Leave them be," Maleficent answered. "We have no further use for them after Hawkins' failure."
Turbo asked, "But why?!"
Jafar answered, "That Olympios man will more than likely banish you into cyberspace. Or even worse send you to a cyberspace with no escape."
Turbo gloated, "At least I have a way back."
Maleficent snarled, "Enough. Turbo, get back to researching."
Turbo grumbled. He was a Dark Master, yet he was being worked like a dog.
Turbo moved on to Bianca!
He already knew that she was a descendant of Aurora, one of the Walt Maidens. However, she was also a descendant of Rapunzel and Eugene Fitzherbert.
Turbo cried, "Oh my God! She's a Flitzherbert!"
"That explains her snarky attitude," Jafar said.
Maleficent snarled, "The light of Compassion is dormant within her heart!"
"Then we must make sure that she never awakens its power," said Jafar.
Turbo started to look into Mahad's file.
Jafar stopped him. "Maleficent and I have observed this one enough. We know about his past and his fears."
Turbo asked Jafar, "That magpie might have wished for protection against your hypnotism."
Jafar asked, "What?!"
Frollo grinned. "I wouldn't be surprised at that, considering what a mentally unstable girl she is. Of course, she would want her feeble mind to be protected."
Turbo began laughing at the insult!
Brandon walked in and he asked, "Why do you guys call Natius, a flame brat?"
Turbo asked outraged, "You never heard of the Firebird?"
Maleficent smacked Turbo in the face and she stated, "Jafar can tell you that story he had been studying."
Brandon was on his way to see Jafar. On the way, he and Frollo looked at each other with distrust. Brandon grunted and continued his path.
"You're just waiting for the kid to mess up, aren't you?" Turbo asked.
Maleficent answered, "No, but I think he had that question in his mind for some time."
Jafar showed Brandon a picture of Prince Harald and Brandon asked, "What does that boring one dimensional prince have to do with Natius?"
Jafar answered, "In a dark age, Prince Harald made a pact with a bird of immense power."
"And that bird is this Firebird?" Brandon asked.
Jafar answered, "Yes."
As Brandon listened to the story of the legend of the Firebird, he started to realize that Natius was its host. When the pact was made, the beast's power had been passed down through the generations. Now he understood why the Dark Masters called Natius a flame brat.
Brandon asked, "Why is there an article about Mulan?"
"The boy's father is her descendant," he answered.
Brandon began to remember an article about a dragon and a Firebird working together in Hürtgen Forest.
Brandon heard footsteps and he saw Roxburg Stoker, a toon anthropomorphic brown bat who had a fox-like face, but he was blind. He was also garbed in a black coat.
Brandon asked the bat, "Is it true that when US Sergeant Adalric Roseraven and US Army Private Satoshi Takahashi fought in the Hürtgen one final time, a Firebird and a dragon joined forces in order to keep German soldiers at bay before Roseraven was killed?"
The bat nodded in response. "I was sent to the forest to retrieve the dagger for Grimhilde, but one of Mickey's servants set off a light bomb, brightening the whole place and causing me to go blind from the blast. Before I knew it, the dagger was gone. When I reported to Grimhilde about what happened, she tricked me into taking a potion she said would cure my blindness and restore my vision. But instead, the potion made me into this." he explained.
"Oh, man," Brandon said in bewilderment.
"We think it may have been the Great Stone Dragon," said Jafar.
"That's impossible," Brandon argued. "The statue of that Dragon was destroyed."
Jafar clarified, "There is a possibility that the spirit of the Great Stone Dragon was with Mulan during her time in the war."
That didn't make sense to Brandon. How could the spirit appear if the statue was destroyed?
Maleficent clarified, "When Mulan was reflecting on herself on the feet of the Great Stone Dragon when she learned that her father might not return. So when Mulan made the decision to join the Imperial Army, the Great Stone Dragon's spirit found a host with tremendous courage."
"It possessed her?" Brandon asked.
"That's not what I said." Maleficent said.
Jafar stated, "The Dragon guided Mulan during her time in the war."
Brandon wanted to make sure he understood and asked, "Are you saying Mulan was the Great Stone Dragon's host the same way Prince Harald was the Firebird's host?"
Maleficent answered, "Temporarily."
Maleficent clarified, "Once Mulan acquired the Crest of the Emperor of China, the Stone Dragon found residence there. That crest had been kept in a vault within the Grimhilde Estate for many years."
Brandon asked, "Why?"
"To prevent the Dragon's powers from getting out of control or falling into the wrong hands." she answered.
Brandon asked, "Does the Dragon guard the estate?"
"Not the estate," Turbo answered. "It protects the family inside of it."
Brandon asked, "What about Snow White? Aside from the Firebird, did she have a guardian spirit protecting her?"
Maleficent answered, "No."
Brandon asked, "Why?"
"There were no other magical beings aside from the magic mirror Grimhilde possessed." Maleficent answered. "The mirror was in her service alone."
"What happened to the mirror after the evil queen died?" Brandon asked, curious.
Maleficent answered, "The mirror could not be destroyed, so Snow White had it locked away to prevent anyone from abusing it ever again."
Brandon asked, "Who would abuse a mirror?"
"They probably didn't want the mirror to fall into our hands." Turbo assumed.
Brandon asked, "Did anyone try to get it?"
Turbo answered, "We sent minions and they would often return psychologically damaged."
"Grimhilde was supposed to have had the mirror sent here before she went after Snow White, but she was too focused on trying to kill the Walt Maiden," said Jafar.
Brandon asked, "Walt Maiden?"
Maleficent grinned. "Allow me to educate you. Aurora, Snow White, and Cinderella are known as Walt Maidens. They were the only three princesses who came to be before the creator died."
"Creator," Brandon repeated. "You mean Disney himself."
Maleficent answered, "Correct. These three have the purest of three lights: Kindness, Sincerity, and Dreams."
"Just like Maleficent and Grimhilde were the first and only two Dark Masters when the creator was still around," said Turbo.
Brandon asked, "What about Lady Tremaine?"
"She didn't meet the qualifications," said Maleficent. "She was not a villain of a position of power nor was she fearful or vengeful."
Brandon pointed out, "She was an aristocrat."
Jafar answered, "Not anymore. Her title was stripped from her."
Maleficent stroked her crow. "Her daughter Drizella was turned into a scullery maid. Anastasia, on the other hand, was reformed and pardoned."
Brandon guessed, "I take that Lady Tremaine also became a scullery maid. Why did Anastasia reform?"
"For stupid reasons," Turbo snorted. "Finally understanding true love and kindness."
Frollo scoffed. "There's no such thing as true love."
Jafar smirked at him. "You'd know all about that, wouldn't you?"
Maleficent stated, "Fortunately, Anastasia Tremaine has no element."
Brandon asked, "Why did Grimhilde step down?"
Maleficent explained the story, saying that a long time ago, the evil queen sent a minion to covet the Dagger of Devotion, which was sighted in Hürtgen Forest. Unfortunately, the minion was unable to bring the weapon back to the Forbidden Castle after finding it.
Rather than blame her subject and rant about it, Grimhilde decided to take responsibility for the failure by surrendering her position as a Dark Master. Her final act was having Maleficent rise as the new leader and choosing Turbo as the new Dark Master.
As Brandon listened, he thought to himself how he couldn't fathom why the evil queen would choose Turbo. On the other hand, it made him grateful that the Horned King wasn't chosen to be a new Dark Master. The boy felt a sense of dread towards the skeletal monarch.
Maleficent noticed the boy's dread and she asked, "What's troubling you?"
Brandon snapped out of his thoughts. "I was just thinking,"
"About other potential villains Grimhilde could have chosen," Turbo said, sensing his thoughts. "I know. Other villains have shared the same thoughts."
"I was just thinking how glad I should be that certain villains weren't chosen," Brandon stated.
Jafar teased him, asking, "You're not afraid of anyone in particular, are you, boy?"
"No," Brandon lied. "I'm just glad the queen didn't choose anyone more annoying than Turbo."
"Watch it, kid," Turbo growled.
Jafar laughed, "But it's true."
Turbo grunted and turned away.
Maleficent began looking into the sphere of her staff, keeping her eye on her subordinates and making sure they wouldn't fail.
Brandon asked, "Who are you looking after?"
"It's nothing you need be concerned about," Maleficent told him.
Seeing that he wasn't going to get an answer, Brandon left the throne room.
"The boy is getting to be nosy," said Turbo.
Maleficent retorted, "i agree. We need to so something about this."
"We can't waste our time supervising him and making sure he doesn't get into places he shouldn't," said Turbo.
"Forget the boy," said Jafar. "We have a magpie to think about."
Maybe keeping Brandon in check wasn't much concern to the sorcerer. Still, he was right. The Dark Masters needed to concentrate on dealing with the heroes. That was why Maleficent was monitoring Ratcliffe and Marius with her staff, to make sure there would be no problems.
Marius who disguised himself as a sailor from 1607 asked Ratcliffe while riding a carriage for the Susan Constant one of the three ships that would travel to the New World, "Is there any fish on that boat ride of yours?"
Ratcliffe's dog, Percy, growled at Marius, telling him to back off.
"Lay low during the voyage," Ratcliffe ordered. "And I might consider sharing our rations with you."
Marius replied, "You better be true to your word, Pigman."
Percy growled at him as if saying, "Bird, I would advise you to keep yourself hidden."
And so began the voyage to the new world.
Meanwhile in a secluded part of what would be Virginia, Wizard was whining to come with Danyal.
Wizard wanted to come with Danyal, but Figaro stated, "As for you Wizard, you are going to be in the Solar Castle of King Mickey."
Danyal stated, "I'm sorry Wizard, but you are going to have to stay with Mickey because you would get in the way and possibly get killed."
The dog didn't want to comply. He was very loyal to Danyal. He wanted to protect her.
Figaro took out a small handful of sleep dust and he scattered it in front of the dog making him sleepy.
Oliver picked him the dog and held him in his arms. "You have our word that we will keep him safe and we will take care of him."
Danyal stated, "That's good to hear."
Yuki decided to follow Oliver as she wanted to make sure that she was taken care of while her owner would seek out advice.
Figaro took the carrier. "We'll have your loyal companions ready for you when you are able to return home," he promised. The word 'pet' didn't seem of appropriate use to the two cats. They saw themselves more as companions to the families they loves and wanted to show the same regard to Yuki and Wizard.
Mahad looking at Zander, "Why a beaver? I'm pretty sure that there are badgers here."
Zander stated, "I'd rather not get killed by a gray wolf."
Mana asked, "Do you realize that beavers have predators?"
Zander knew as much. "At least the teeth and tail can be useful in helping me defend myself. That and beavers are great swimmers. With the rivers, I'll have some advantages."
Vandela pointed out, "Otters can also help because they are notorious for savagely attacking humans."
Danyal stated as she looked around her, "This is a place easy to get lost. So it's best that we stick together."
Bianca asked, "Who bares the element of Steadfastness?"
"Thomas Allen-Son," Figaro answered. "His good friend John Smith represents the element of trust."
"Pocahontas represents the element of spirit," Oliver added. "Her best friend Nakoma represents the element of faith."
Bianca asked,, "Why would a slip shot sailor and poor excuse of a soldier would possess that element?"
Danyal gave Bianca a look of outrage for her comment.
"Thomas was weak of heart," Figaro admitted. "But when he finally understood who the real enemy was, he found the courage to stand up for what was right."
Danyal stated to Bianca, "You need to work on your attitude."
Bianca asked, "Why?"
"What you said about Thomas was disrespectful," Oliver scolded.
"Well, Ratcliffe said it first," Bianca argued.
"So you agree with what that villain said?" Oliver asked.
It was hard for Bianca to answer. She still had the opinion that Thomas was cowardly and clumsy, but she began to curse herself for sounding like Ratcliffe.
Danyal stated, "Bianca, Thomas would go on to become a veteran of several campaigns known for his tactical approach to combat. What you said about him is disrespectful towards his service for the very country that would become the United States."
Bianca apologized, "I'm sorry, but in my opinion, he was a clumsy coward."
Danyal stated, "Like Figaro said, he had the courage to stand up for what was right."
Bianca asked, "How would Nakoma be able to possess the element of Faith?"
"When Thomas returned to Jamestown, Nakoma opened her heart to him and gave him her hand in marriage," Oliver was explaining. "Upon doing do, she converted to Christianity."
"Like Pocahontas did when she married John Rolf," Jeanette asked.
"You might say that," Oliver said. "For a long time, Nakoma only followed her people's culture and customs. As time passed and she began to live in harmony with the Englishmen who settled in Jamestown, her faith changed."
Mahad commented, "Damn. To think, she was devastated by the death of Pocahontas in 1617."
"It was a devastating loss to her and all the people of the Powhatan tribe," Oliver said sadly.
Bianca stated, "I bet they were furious with John Smith."
Mana was confused at that statement. "Why would they be mad at him?"
"Maybe they felt disgraced by him and thought the affection between him and Pocahontas was a lie," Toboé assumed.
Natius stated, "That and he didn't return to Virginia."
"We can't change what happened," Oliver was saying. "But we can try to make sure history progresses as it should. After all, this is one time period one must not meddle with."
Figaro agreed. "Changing the past always changes the future for the worst than it does for the better."
Danyal stated, "Good point."
It was time to get a move on. "Our first step here is to find Pocahontas. I'm sure by now, she's likely seeking guidance from Grandmother Willow." said Figaro.
"The islet where the tree resides is sacred ground," Oliver warned. "So be careful what you say and do there."
Danyal asked, "Who can enter this sacred ground?"
"Anyone who is pure of heart," Figaro answered. "Grandmother Willow won't make herself known to just anybody."
Oliver gave a reassuring smile. "But I'm sure she'll know of you the same way the Fairy Godmother and the Good Fairies did."
Mahad commented, "Hopefully she can help us."
Bianca got an idea. "Danyal, you should tell Grandmother Willow about your dream. She might know something."
Danyal stated, "I was considering the same thought and she might help you with your element."
"Don't get carried away," Figaro said. "Grandmother Willow may be wise, but she's not an interpreter."
While walking, the heroes stumbled upon a canoe docked near the river. The problem was, it wouldn't be able to carry everyone. Being an otter, Vandela could swim beside the canoe. Zander could as well, being a beaver. The water wasn't too deep either for Omar. He could carry most of the group while swimming.
Mahad commented, "I bet that Grandmother Willow is going to be surprised by a small group of animals."
Mahad noticed a willow tree and he stated, "I think that we're here."
Danyal looked around as the animals were whispering about them.
Upon descending to the islet, a gentle, elderly voice spoke. "I sensed you chlidren would be arriving." Everyone looked and saw a face in the tree.
"Confused?" the tree asked. "I'd be surprised if you weren't."
Natius was confused. "How did you know we were children?"
"You may look like animals, but you have the souls of human children," the tree answered.
It was amazing to the heroes that Grandmother Willow would see through them the same way the Fairy Godmother did.
"Hello, Grandmother Willow," Oliver and Figaro said.
"Hello, young cats," the tree returned. "I suppose Master Yen Sid sent you?"
Figaro answered, "That's correct. I have to make sure that they don't set a toe out of line."
Bianca asked, "Do you know the man who turned us into animals before we met Figaro and Oliver?"
Grandmother Willow responded, "I'm afraid that I can't answer that question."
Danyal stated, "I don't know if you can help with a dream that has been bothering me for some time. In the dream, I was told that my trial of Faith will begin."
The animals around her began laughing
Danyal began to feel annoyed by the laughter and Natius warned, "If you don't stop laughing, you're going to end up regretting it."
Grandmother Willow ordered the animals to be quiet. All at once, they stopped chattering. She refocused her attention on Danyal. "A trial of faith, you say? Only the voice within you can answer that. To find the answer, you must listen with your heart."
Anakin asked, "What do they mean by other worlds needing our help?"
"They mean as they say," Grandmother Willow answered. "Many worlds have been plunged into darkness by the four Dark Masters. The powers of the elements can restore the harmony of the worlds."
Anakin asked, "How are we to awaken the elements?"
"Each world is a home to a certain warrior. You must work together with the warriors of those worlds and help them discover the gift within themselves."
Toboé pointed out, "That itself is not a simple task."
Mahad commented, "We unlocked several elements, right?"
Grandmother Willow stated, "You have been able to awakening the three Walt Maidens."
Bianca, Jeanette, and Natius looked at one another.
"The elements represented by the Walt Maidens were also known as pure lights." said Grandmother Willow.
Mahad asked, "What were the lights?"
"The elements, of course," Oliver snapped. "Kindness, Sincerity, and Dreams."
Bianca asked, "How can we find our history teacher?"
Grandmother Willow wasn't sure if she could provide an answer that was any different from the Oracle. But she decided to try. "Before you can achieve your task of finding him, you will have to travel to more worlds and meet more warriors."
Natius stated, "We need to find a way to awaken those warriors."
"I already said that's no easy task!" Toboé reminded him.
"Children, sometimes the right path is not always the easy path," Grandmother Willow advised. "Your journey will become more difficult as you go, but that is essential for you if you wish to find your teacher and return to your homeland."
Bianca stated, "We can't interfere with certain events, so we need to think of a plan."
Mahad commented, "I would recommend to look for the settlement."
Danyal argued, "No! We'll end up dead. Do you have any idea what they do to animals? Hunt them for pelts, meat, and feathers."
Natius agreed. "The chief and his people are anxious enough with the current newcomers."
Zander asked, "Then what do we do? I don't think the Native Americans would be welcoming to a menagerie of animals. Even if they were totems."
"You are welcome to stay here on this islet." Grandmother Willow offered.
"That's kind of you, Grandmother Willow, but we can't." Figaro said politely.
Mahad asked, "Where to?"
"We find Smith," Figaro decided. "He's probably exploring the woods looking for trouble."
Oliver scoffed. "To think, his element is trust."
As everyone left the islet, Jeanette asked the cats, "Why does John Smith represent trust?"
"He's very trustworthy among his men," Figaro was saying. "But he also had to learn to put his trust in others. He did that for Pocahontas when she asked him to come back with her to her village and talk to the chief."
Natius commented, "Mr. Virgil told my class that John Smith pointed his gun to the chief. I don't know if that's bullshit or not."
"Did you read the history books to find out?" Oliver asked.
Natius answered, "Believe it or not, it doesn't say anything about him being trustworthy and when he met Pocahontas again, she was not happy to see him. He never returned to Virginia and there was a huge amount of wars going on at the time."
Mana stated, "I bet he lost the element at some point."
Anakin stated, "Let's just hope that Smith won't hunt us."
Mana commented, "Knowing that man I don't think he would know anything about animals found in the USA."
Natius pointed out, "This would be called America at this point."
Anakin asked Natius, "Why would a man like Mr. Virgil tell you that Smith was like that swine?!"
Natius replied, "That is his opinion. He appreciated the Disney movie for its animation and music, but the writing and the historical inaccuracies are two of the reasons why he would not allow the movie as a source."
Anakin commented, "Talk about a boring teacher like the three Walt Warriors."
Natius felt insulted as Harald before having to relinquish his element and dagger was the leader of the Walt Warriors and he asked Anakin, "What is your major problem, rodent boy?! I think it would be rather funny if you were turned into a little gerbil."
"Enough with the rodent calling already!" Anakin snapped.
There was no further argument as everyone's fur began to tense. Before things would get any worse, they heard approaching footsteps.
Being animals, their senses had become more keen. They could tell someone was nearby.
Cautiously, the heroes came to a misty part of the river. There they saw a blonde haired soldier and a young woman looking at each other. The soldier was armed, but he did not fire. He lowered his gun as he looked on, captivated by her.
Natius rolled his eyes in annoyance and Danyal struck him with one of her wings and she scolded, "Have you no sense of respect? You're being skeptical about Smith. What is causing you to doubt that he is worthy of the element?"
"Because of what he's going to do in the future," he answered with a quiet voice. Although Natius remembered that Smith helped the king to realize that Ratcliffe was lying and being treasonous, he still did not live up to his element.
Mahad asked, "How can we convince him about his element?"
"We can't," Jeanette said. "What if doing so will cause us to accidentally change the events?"
Mahad stated, "We should lie low and stay away from both sides."
"You mean we're just going to observe?" Bianca whined. "What about Danyal's dream?"
No further was discussed among the heroes as they realized that the soldier and the young Indian woman had left the river and were running through the woods.
Mana asked, "Should we follow them?"
"Yes, but we must hurry or we're going to lose them," Oliver answered. So they all began running after the two.
The heroes were able to catch up with the two!
When the heroes caught up with Johh Smith and Pocahontas, they hid behind the bushes to avoid being spotted. "
It turned out that the man and the young woman were the people the heroes were looking for; Pocahontas and John Smith. The blonde assured the young woman that he meant no harm. Something in her heart was telling her she could trust this man, so she stayed and the two began talking, getting to know each other.
Mahad asked, "Why do we have to hide among the bushes?"
"Let's just let the events play as they should for the time being," Figaro whispered. "Besides, I think they would be horrified at talking animals."
"We're going to have to make ourselves known to them soon." Natius said impatiently.
Danyal stated, "No. You would be meddling in affairs that don't concern yourself and besides, I think we should wait until the pig is chained and gagged. However, we should meet up in the islet of Grandmother Willow."
"What about Thomas and Nakoma?" Natius asked. "They play an important part in this too. We have to make sure they awaken as the warriors of their elements too."
"Natius," Figaro hissed in a low voice. "Right now, we have to be patient. And Danyal's right. They'll meet again at Grandmother Willow's islet. And that's where we'll go."
Natius asked, "But why?"
"Because that islet is where it's all set to take place." Figaro told him.
This gave Anakin an idea and he asked, "Can I lure out Thomas and Nakoma?"
"No," Nausicaä told him. "That's a horrible idea. Right now, the Natives and the Englishmen have uneasy feelings towards each other."
Mahad stated, "She's right."
Danyal agreed, "That's a foolish plan."
"Besides, Thomas is a coward." Bianca commented.
Danyal replied, "Your attitude is going to get you into trouble one day."
Mahad silenced the girls and told everyone else to be quiet. "Listen. What's that noise?"
Zander heard it too. "It sounds like drums. Something must've happened in the village."
"They must've gotten into a fight with the soldiers while they were observing them." Oliver wondered.
"It's not safe here," Figaro said. "We should hurry back to the islet."
The heroes began to hurry to the islet of Grandmother Willow.
By the time they got there, it started raining. They would be safe and dry under the trees leafs. There was nothing left for the heroes to do now but wait.
Danyal asked, "How long will this rain last?"
"I don't know," Oliver said. "But for now, I think we should try to rest."
Danyal began to rest and started to have a new dream.
Danyal found herself standing on the platform that she had seen in Snow White's world and she asked, "What the hell? I'm back on the platform."
She began to look around to see if anyone else was there.
Suddenly, a doe appeared. "Your trial of faith begins here," she told Danyal.
Danyal asked, "Are you a spirit of a deer?"
Then she remembered the wisdom she was given from Grandmother Willow; listen to the spirit within. In addition, the doe's voice almost sounded like Nakoma's voice.
Danyal asked, "How do I awaken my element? What must I do to prove myself worthy of the element?"
The doe moved closer to Danyal. "The opposing sides are both driven by hate and fear. You must follow the path of understanding. Fight for what you believe in, but be understanding of the people around you, just as Nakoma must do for Thomas."
Danyal stated, "I understand what you mean."
The doe pranced around Danyal, filling the area with her spiritual power.
Danyal asked, "What's going on?"
"The bow and arrows you carry with you will unleash my spiritual power once you have awakened as a warrior of faith," the doe answered. "Until then, my power will be dormant in your weapon."
Danyal stated, "Thank you."
Danyal awoke and she noticed that the rain had stopped.
She looked around and she saw the group still asleep and she cried, "The rain has stopped."
Natius was the first to wake up, followed by Zander and Jeanette.
Mahad gently nudged his sister. "Wake up, Mana."
Omar got on his hooves. His ears suddenly perked up. "Someone's coming."
Danyal noticed that it was Pocahontas was coming.
Oliver looked at Figaro. "Is it time now?"
Figaro nodded. The heroes were ready to meet Pocahontas and John Smith. Besides, Pocahontas was about to introduce Smith to Grandmother Willow.
Mahad asked, "Are you sure that she won't be shocked to see us?"
"She already has animal friends," Bianca pointed out.
"But they can't talk," Jeanette said.
Danyal stated, "She's right."
Natius was tired of just sitting by and doing nothing. He moved over to the two. Smith wasn't too surprised, considering he had been around animals in all the time he had spent with Pocahontas.
Natius cleared his throat. "Let me apologize in advance bin case this comes as a shock to you two."
It did. "You can talk?" Smith asked.
Mahad rolled his eyes. "Please, don't encourage him," he said sarcastically.
"This is impossible," Smith said, looking at the animals.
"Nothing is impossible," Figaro was saying. "And sometimes things aren't always what they seem. They're actually human children."
Danyal stated, "We appear as animals to prevent any unwanted attention."
Mahad asked, "Why do you have to say that?"
"Actually, it's for their protection against their enemies," said Oliver.
"Are you cats children too?" Smith asked.
"No, my mentor and I are natural born cats," Oliver answered. "Though, I guess being kittens, we are children, in a sense."
Percy saw the two kittens and started to chase after them!
"That's Ratcliffe's pig-faced dog." Bianca cried.
Mahad asked, "What do we do? Figaro and Oliver are being chased!"
Meeko the raccoon began fighting with Percy, trying to stop him.
"Meeko, come here!" Pocahontas ordered.
John Smith tried to stop Percy. "Bad! Bad dog! Sit!"
But the animals wouldn't listen. Grandmother Willow had enough and shouted, "All right, that's enough!"
Percy finally stopped and fell in the water as he froze with fright.
Natius began laughing at this!
Omar helped Percy out of the water.
Bianca scoffed. "How fitting that Ratcliffe would have a pet that also looks like a pig."
Jeanette looked at her. "At least Percy leaves him in the future like Iago did with Jafar."
Natius stated, "She's right."
Pocahontas asked John to come back with her to her village to see her father. She didn't want to see her people get into a war with the Englishmen.
John was uncertain that the chief would listen to anything he had to say and there would be no use in preventing any violence.
For once, Natius decided to do something to help. He gave John Smith the same wisdom Grandmother Willow gave to the heroes. "Sometimes the right path is not always the easy path," he said to Smith. "We also have a saying back home: Where there's a will, there's a way. Your efforts have to count for something."
At that moment, Smith was convinced to go to the village and talk to Powhatan. Happy to hear that, Pocahontas began embracing him.
Danyal alerted as she heard Kocoum's battle cry, "We've got ourselves a skirmish boys!"
Nearby, Smith's friend Thomas Allen-Son was getting his rifle ready.
Natius sensed him and cried, "Thomas is here!"
Mahad asked, "What do we do?"
Vandela's eyes widened at the sight of the gun!
Danyal cried as Vandela was about to rush towards Thomas, "Vandela! No!"
"You'll be killed!" Toboé cried.
But she was too late. Thomas fired his gun and shot Kocoum, killing him. Vandela in a fury started brutally biting Thomas's hand causing him to drop the gun!
Danyal watched Kocoum fall into the water and she was shocked to notice blood in the water muttered, "Good Lord."
Danyal turned around to see Vandela attacking Thomas and she yelled, "Damn it! Vandela!"
She cried, "Nausicaä, we need to restrain an otter who has shellshock!"
Nausicaä and Danyal swooped and took Vandela into the trees!
Danyal looked at Pocahontas who was struggling to go after Thomas as she yelled, "He killed him!"
Smith saw that nothing was going to help the situation. He yelled at Thomas to leave. "Thomas, get out of here!" But Thomas hesitated. "Get out of here!" Smith yelled again. Finally, Thomas began running back to the camp holding pressure where Vandela bit him. When he did, men from the village came and seized Smith and carried the body of their dead comrade. Pocahontas followed with great sadness in her heart.
Toboe scolded Vandela. "What were you thinking out there?! Thomas could have shot and killed you!"
Vandela replied, "He had a gun!"
"Exactly!" Toboé cried. "You could've been killed!"
Danyal pointed out, "I think that Vandela has some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or in this case shellshock upon seeing a gun."
She turned to Vandela and stated, "That does not excuse a very reckless act that would've cost you your life. Do you have any idea what otters are hunted for? Their pelts. Sadly I am not making this up. I'd rather not know the consequences of losing our lives."
"It would be the same as if it were your own world," Oliver told her. "This isn't a game."
Figaro nodded. "If you got killed, it would be the end of you forever."
Danyal stated, "I hate to say this, but they're right. There would be no way to reunited with your mother if that happened."
Figaro sighed. "I try reasoning with you children to prevent things like that from happening. You'll do well to listen to me from here on out."
Vandela stated, "Understood."
At the village, there was an announcement that John Smith was to be executed for the death of Kocoum.
Danyal felt so much remorse over the death of Kocoum.
Zander stated, "You're not the one who fired the gun."
Mana asked Danyal, "What's bothering you?"
Zander stated, "Seeing her ancestor gun down a warrior had probably taken a toll on her."
Danyal asked, "What do you mean?"
"Thomas was just following orders, but it doesn't change the fact that he killed Kocoum in cold blood," Zander stated. He looked at Danyal and asked, "Is that it?"
Danyal stated, "Yes."
"Does this mean that Thomas will never awaken as the warrior he's meant to become?" Mana asked.
"No, he still has a chance," Mahad promised her.
Vandela confessed, "I looked at the man's eyes and they looked tensed up as if he was facing a person who wronged him. It's possible that he lost a relative during the first battle."
Natius added, "That killing would not necessarily be out of cold blood, but rather out of desperation to save Smith's life."
Mahad stated, "To put it this way, his element still has a chance."
"I hope so," said Mana. "We don't have long until sunrise."
Danyal asked, "What can we do? We can't interfere with the events."
"Can't we convince Pocahontas to tell her father what really happened?" Mana asked.
"The chief is filled with anger due to the loss of his finest warrior," Mahad told her. "There's no use in talking to him."
"This is how it's supposed to be," Oliver was saying. "If Thomas was the one in Smith's place, there would be no saving him and there really would be a war. As such, there would be no future for the opposing sides."
Mahad stated, "You have a good point."
Natius asked, "Is there any way to help?"
Danyal pointed out, "Thomas has gone through enough already he lost his younger brother during the first skirmish and he had now been bitten by a shellshocked otter."
The heroes saw Pocahontas leave the tent Smith was imprisoned in. She feared that the time she spent with him in there would be their last moment together. Pocahontas began to blame herself. If she had only obeyed her father and stayed in the village, if she had never met John Smith, then this wouldn't be happening. But Smith had already told her that he was willing to accept his fate and that meeting Pocahontas was worth it.
It didn't help that Nakoma confessed to Pocahontas that she was the one who sent Kocoum to find her. She was only worried about her best friend. In truth, the whole quartet of warriors was to blame for these transpiring events, but each one only felt that they alone were responsible.
Danyal looked at her ancestress and began to see a doe spirit within Nakoma.
Natius called for attention. "Danyal, we're going back to the islet." He didn't want any of his friends to stay here in the village while Powhatan and his soldiers were preparing for Smith's execution as well as the upcoming war.
Danyal began to fly back to the islet and she noticed the animals were panicking!
Author's Notes: Looks like the quartet of warriors are facing internal conflict. Will they resolve it before the sun rises? Will Danyal be worthy of the elements within her and awaken as a warrior herself? Tune in next episode. I would like to give MillenniumPrincess special thanks for help on this chapter.
