It was the late afternoon, and Saphira had not been doing much at all for most of the day. She ended up having a nap in the middle of the day, mostly because the stress and pain had made her feel exhausted, and she needed to sleep it away. Though she didn't feel much better when she woke up from her nap, and she did not even feel hungry either. The most she had was an apple, and that pretty much felt like it was more than enough for her for the whole day. She knew it was because she was not feeling herself, and she might make some soups later, but she really was not feeling it today. She might take a day or two to get back to eating, but that did depend on how she felt.
As it was the late afternoon though, Saphira knew that Optimus would be expecting her to leave the apartment tonight. She dreaded that. She dreaded it a lot. The only thing was though she did not have a way to communicate with the autobots. As far as she knew, she was not given anything. The only thing that did cross her mind were the keys for the Porsche. She technically did not need keys to start the motor, as Mirage did not need the keys, but she did believe that the keys were an extended part of him. She just had not asked about it.
She also did not want to seem like a fool for trying to speak to a key in the hopes it would respond to her. Until she is given confirmation on what exactly she could use to communicate with the autobots, she figured she would not try anything for the time being. Though she truthfully did not know how to feel about tonight. She really wanted to stay in the apartment and sleep in her bed. She hated the idea of having to leave, and she truthfully did not want to call her landlord over it. Though truth be told, her lease renewal is in a few weeks, so she could easily let that roll over, and her contract would no longer beg valid…but she still did not want to leave it yet.
She had considered calling a real estate about a new apartment, but she knew there was no point in doing that. The autobots likely would follow her to it anyway, and she really did not want to get on the badside of Optimus. With her crutches though, it would be interesting to see how the first night was going to go. She couldn't put pressure on her ankle or ribs either, and trucks were not exactly the most comfortable place to sleep.
She did make sure that she showered before the evening as she wanted to make sure she felt clean. She had no idea how cold it would get, or whether Optimus would keep her warm from the cold air, but it was best to be prepared. Which meant warm clothes, even though she was tempted to wear pyjamas. She had to think about what else she would bring. She figured a pillow and a blanket, but she did not know if it would be allowed.
I don't think Optimus will be that cruel and prevent me from having these for a more comfortable night sleep…but I don't know him really well either.
Saphira did wanted to drag out the time a bit as well. She didn't particularly want to sleep extremely early, even though it would be good for her body to heal. So she would wait until it was about seven. She grabbed her sketchbook, a diary and pencils to bring with her, along with a pillow and blanket. She put them into a bag to take with her and used the bathroom before she would head down to the car lot. She did not really know what to expect.
She stood in the elevator, resting against the wall as she waited for the elevator to reach the car lot. Her mind was going over a lot of different things at the moment. She knew that it would not be settled for a while. She did try not to think about Dylan and Claudia, but it was extremely hard not to think about them. She was still hurting. She definitely was going to sue them for what they have done to her. She did not care if they would go into debt, they deserved it.
Once the elevator doors open, Saphira hobbled out of the elevator and made her way across the lot over to Mirage. She did not feel any sense of happiness when she saw the Porsche, she simply reached the door and it opened before she could reach the handle and carefully sat down and placed her crutches onto the passenger seat, along with her bag. She closed the door and put the seatbelt on before she relaxed.
She waited, and frowned when she engine did not start. "Mirage?" He did not respond. She sighed in irritation. "Mirage, do not do that please. I do not know where we are going to meet up with Optimus, so you need to do the driving."
"Sorry, I was just recharging lightly." Recharge? Saphira guessed that was their way of saying they were sleeping. "I just needed a moment." The engine roared to life, and Saphira was able to relax some more. "I suppose today has been rather quiet for you, right? I think you would normally be doing something else, but…"
"Yeah." Mirage backed out of the parking space to drive out of the garage. "It has been very quiet…my mind is just…everywhere right now. So much has happened in such a short time, and I am not sure how I am going to cope." She held her hands together nervously. "I am sure you probably can sympathize…you might not understand, but…" She paused and looked down, swallowing nervously as she stopped talking.
"That might be true, I don't fully understand. I haven't exactly been in a position to find someone who I can give my spark to. Not yet anyway…but I not on the right planet to go looking for the right autobot for me." Saphira was slightly amused by his response, though she did not make a comment about it. Mirage could see that joking with her might not do much to cheer her up. "I know we don't know each other very well, Saphira, but I want you to know I am here to listen to whatever problem you have. Even if it is about my boss. Optimus is being a bit too protective of us, even though you yourself have said you understand why humans can't be trusted."
"Thanks, Mirage, but I really don't think I will talk too much tonight. We have already spoken to each other this morning, and I think that is enough. I just hope Optimus will grant me some help. I can't get up and down from the truck with this ankle." Saphira did not know if the autobots would find a place that was secluded enough to hide from prying eyes. "I guess I am being a bit pessimistic I suppose."
"No, you are not. But Optimus will likely help, or have one of us help you. He isn't that cruel, and I am sure you will realize that. And remember, he is carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders, Saphira. The guilt he has is causing him to lash out at you, and while it is not right, you already understand that." Indeed, she did. She did not know their fully story yet, but she hoped that she would learn about it soon. "I am hoping that Optimus explains more of our situation to you soon. It will be good for you to know. I honestly don't think you are going to be out of our hair any time soon honestly."
Saphira had the same feeling, even though she hoped that the autobots would leave this planet. She might have memories that no one else would have, but that did not mean she wanted to hang around the autobots forever. "I hope so. Today has been…well…I am still in a lot of pain, so I guess it has been very long. I think the next few days are going to feel like that."
"And you humans seem to take a lot longer to heal than what we do too. But I'll make sure you are okay, Saphira. You have my word."
She frowned a little, looking at the radio as Mirage drove through the streets of the city. "Why do you even care?" She heard a strange whirring sound that seemed to indicate that Mirage was surprised by her question. "Why do you care about how I am feeling or healing? I am not an autobot, so…unless you are trying to find some kind of comfort with a human because of Optimus…"
"Let me stop you right there, Saphira. I am not sure what kind of autobot you think I am, but I am a very nice guy. I am sure you can tell that. Heck, I am the one who tried protecting you from Dylan." He has a point, but Saphira still did not fully understand. "I am not sure what your past has been like regarding friends and stuff, so I am not going to ask. But I want you to know that I am not pulling your leg. I care because I am not Optimus. I think humans are kind of cool in their own right. Sure, they can assholes, but you find that in different races. Even among my own race. I want to be your friend because I genuinely want to be one."
Saphira did not know if she could believe him yet, but he sounded genuine, so she would give him the benefit of the doubt. "Well…if you say so. I guess…it totally has nothing to do with the fact you think I am pretty, for some reason."
"Is that a bad thing?" Mirage asked in confusion. "I am gonna be honest with you, I have observed many, many humans since I have been here for three years." Three years? That was new information that Mirage probably accidentally gave away. But she would not point that out. "And I have come to observe the appearance of humans, and I guess I have been able to see beauty in humans. You just happen to be quite beautiful in my optics." Saphira turned her head to look out the window with a frown. "I suspect you don't get told you are beautiful."
She shook her head. "I've been called average…which is better than ugly…but I do stand in the mirror and wonder what average means." She knew it was a heavy piece of information to say, but it was something she genuinely felt. "So you calling me beautiful is confusing. But I don't know how many humans you have seen."
"Maybe having someone who is not a human tell you that is way better. Because I have a completely different perspective to beauty than what you probably have." That is also true, but Saphira still not consider herself pretty. "I think there is a lot more going on in that mind of yours than I first thought. But it is okay." She frowned and looked at the dash. "Hey, don't be frowning at me, Saphira. I am only going to be here to try and help you."
Saphira did not really know what kind of help he could really offer, but she didn't particularly care. "Well…I am glad you are trying to be kind to me, Mirage. I just am not sure about the future at the moment. And it scares me. In the last year, I thought my life was going to keep going up, because that is where it has been going."
"And I am sorry. I am afraid no amount of apologize that I give will be enough, Saphira. I can apologize and apologize until I can't intake and exhale anymore. But while I did do it for your own safety, I also did not want Optimus crashing the party." Saphira was aware of that. What had been done is done. She looked out the window again as Mirage continued to drive through the city. She noticed he was driving quite far from her apartment building. "Stay relaxed, Saphira. Arcee found a place where you can climb into Optimus's cab without anyone seeing you. It is a little away from your apartment, but it is better than prying eyes watching."
"Okay…I was getting a little worried." Saphira took a deep breath to try and calm herself down. "But it has been a very stressful couple days…so…I hope I can be forgiven."
"Of course! You nothing wrong, Saphira. And honestly, I hope you called your boss about it, because I can't imagine you would want to go back to your job while you are in this much pain after last night." She nodded in agreement as she knew that Arthur was going to help her. She still intended to go back after a few days of rest to see what she can do, even if it was only a small amount of work. "I don't know your boss, but I would hope he is a good person."
"Yes…he is. He helped me so much a few years ago. And I am proud to be working for him." Saphira smiled a little as she thought about it before looking down at her hands. "I don't really want to discuss this too much more, Mirage. I just want to get the first night over with."
"I get it, I won't bother you too much more. We aren't far from our destination either."
Saphira did wonder where Mirage was taking her to. She only knew what Mirage had told her that Arcee found somewhere. But she did not know where the was, and she did not know if she should be worried about the location. But as Mirage continued to drive, she saw they were getting closer to the river. She frowned a little as she was confused. It was a lot quieter here, but she still did not know where exactly she was being taken to.
She glanced at the sideview and she spotted Bumblebee following Mirage. She at least knew they were going the right way, but she did wonder if all the autobots had to be there. It was kind of annoying in some way. She didn't need to have all of them watching her. But maybe it just had to be this way since Optimus was clear he did not trust that she would not run again. Although, given the fact she had to use crutches at the moment, she knew that she wouldn't be able to get away.
Mirage turned off the road through an open gate leading into what looked like a place filled with cargo containers. She guessed this must be a wharf, as they were close to the river. She did worry they would still be spotted, but she saw that there was a large warehouse with an opened door. And inside she could see the freightliner truck waiting for them, along with the Ducati. Saphira felt a little nervous as she was still afraid of Optimus.
Once Mirage drove into the warehouse, he came to a stop and opened his door. "I believe this is your stop, ma'am." Saphira smirked slightly at Mirage's light joke. She grabbed her bag first before grabbing her crutches. "Evening, Optimus. I guess Arcee and Bumblebee have not been able to locate our missing Transit."
Optimus began to transform, which startled Saphira just as she was about to stand up. She figured that what Mirage had said might had upset him, so she stood up and hobbled away from Mirage. "We have not. The signal has not been found today." Optimus glanced down at Saphira as she glanced around the warehouse. "I see that your injuries were a lot worse I thought they would be."
Saphira flinched a little when he spoke to her directly. She just shrugged and nodded. "Yeah...I can't put pressure on my ankle." She glanced up at him before looking away again nervously. "I hate to be a nuisance...but I am going to need help getting up."
Optimus just grumbled a little and frowned a little at her. "I expected to hear you ask me to give leniency, and allow you to stay in your apartment." Saphira looked back up at him in surprise, though she made no comment. "I will house you tonight, and going forward. However, I want you to expect that I will not remain in one spot. I might locate Transit. And since it is night, he might very well be easier to locate at this time."
Saphira listened to him and she shrugged a little. "Uh, well...I don't want to cause you any further trouble, Optimus. While I have reservations about you wanting to sleep in your cab instead of the comfort of my own home...I understand why you would not trust me." Optimus raised an eyebrow slightly at her response. "You should not be too surprised that I said that, Optimus. Look at me. I was attacked last night, and now I can't walk on my ankle for a while, and I have two cracked ribs that are going to take months to heal. And..." Saphira was about to say something about her past, but she stopped herself as she did not want to talk about it just yet. "Humans are cruel to humans in general anyway, so I mean, your lack of trust in humans is valid."
Optimus stared at Saphira curiously, though his expression remained stoic as he did not wish reveal that kind of emotion to her. "Hearing you say that about your own kind is not something I expected you to say. But I do understand, given your current situation."
"And if you want to drive around, I don't care. As long as you don't wake me...if it is by accident, I won't be too mad, but I would hope you would not wake me." Saphira looked down before glancing back up again. "And you don't mind if I have some bedding."
"I do not care." He glanced away from her with a frown. "And do not tell me what I should not do, human. If I wake you up, then so be it." Saphira kept her mouth shut for the time being as she knew she did not want to say anything else to upset him. Optimus crouched and began to transform back into the freightliner. She watched curiously as the transformation process intrigued her. "If you have any further complaints, keep them to yourself. I do not need to regret agreeing to not deal with you like I should have."
Saphira shuddered a little and she nodded in understanding. "I understand...I won't be a burden...I will try not to be, anyway." She hobbled over to the truck, watching the door open for her. "Oh, I also do talk in my sleep, in case you need that warning."
Optimus did not respond, but Saphira knew it was good to let him know. She heard one of the other autobots transform and glanced over her shoulder to see Mirage walking over to her. "I might as well give you a hand, Saphira." There was a light growl from Optimus, and Mirage just frowned at him as he gently picked Saphira up and placed her on the seat. "Come on, boss. You know she needs help getting in and out, so I don't think you should be complaining." Optimus closed the door was Saphira was in the cab. She threw her bag into the back seat and began to think on how she was going to climb into the backseat while Mirage spoke with Optimus. "Now I know you don't trust humans, but she understands clearly why. You should give her a chance to show she can be trusted. If Bumblebee could find a human who was good to him, so can we."
"If you hadn't allowed yourself to be discovered, Mirage, none of this would be happening," Optimus responded to the young bot roughly. "We can only trust our own kind. She might prove she can be trusted, but I will not give her my absolute trust."
Mirage threw up his hands in frustration and groaned loudly. "You really need to relax, man! Saphira is a nice girl. She doesn't need us adding onto everything that she's been through. If it weren't for us, she wouldn't be forced to leave that apartment."
"Don't forget, Mirage, it was you who decided to play bodyguard for her," Arcee commented bluntly, making Mirage roll his optics. "I'm serious. It is not our call to protect humans if they are in trouble. You made a choice because of personal feelings, not out of obligation to our leader. You need to separate that. It is too late to go back, but scuffle between humans is not our problem."
Mirage grumbled a little before transforming back into the Porsche. Saphira could not hear what exactly has been said outside the truck as she was carefully crawling to the backseat of the truck. It was not very easy, but once she was in the backseat, she opened the bag to grab out her pillow and blanket to get herself settled in for the night. Though she didn't quite feel tired enough for sleep just yet, she knew that she needed to get comfortable. Once she was laying down with the blanket around her, it was the only time she grabbed out her diary and pencil to write. The light source she used was a small, battery, powered lamp that did not give off a lot of light. But it was enough for her to see.
This seemed to satisfy Optimus as she heard the rumble of the engine start up and Optimus drove out of the warehouse to make a start on patrolling the streets tonight. Saphira did not know Optimus would even locate this Transit that he was so intent on finding, but that would remain to be seen. As long as she was not forcefully woken up, she wouldn't have a problem with him looking for his enemy.
For the time being, Saphira decided to make a start on her first diary entry. It at least helped her to feel better and be able to express her thoughts without anyone responding badly to her. Writing in diaries were not new to her, she has always done it. It always gave her a sense of stability and relief knowing she had something to write her thoughts down. But at least she did not have horrible parents to open her diary to see what exactly she has written down.
And while Optimus began driving through the streets, she felt strangely safe with him. He might have shown her how much he dislikes humans, and how much he did not trust her, but she felt safe. She guessed because she knew that no strange person would climb into the truck. Optimus would undoubtedly keep the doors locked if someone tried to do that.
Dear Diary,
I can't express how much my life has changed so much in the last couple days. This is my first log of a new life that I am still not sure if I am happy about. I have made a discovery of new people who I never thought would exist in our universe. But it has opened my eyes a lot to the universe that this planet resides in. Or maybe I have somehow hit my head really hard and this is now a perpetual dream that I am living while my body is in a coma.
The new people who I have met seem to have strong opinions about this planet. I met them unintentionally, though one of them did try to save me from the immense pain that I am now experiencing. I've lost a boyfriend, but he never was one from the start. And with that, things seem to be in motion that cannot be undone. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to not fall for him.
But now I have a new friend in Mirage. He seems to be a very light hearted person, and he already seems to care about a friendship with me. He shows a protectiveness that I don't know if I am comfortable with. Nobody has ever been there to protect me, until I had met Arthur. Without Arthur, I don't know how much life would look right now. I might still be out on the street, and I am forever grateful for his help.
But how my new friends could put that job in jeopardy. Optimus Prime is someone who seems to be the hardest to earn trust with. From what Mirage has told me, he carries a lot of guilt. Something has happened in their past, and that is why they are stuck here. And it seems they are warriors from where they came from. I know many good leaders go through many motions when they lead their people in war. And if being here in New York was something they had never intended to be, I fully understand why he feels this is his fault.
But I am sure it is not. Optimus has yet to trust me, but I don't intend on forcing that trust. I honestly hope that they do find a way to get home. I believe that whatever they have lost, they can get back. If not, I will have to accept that my life has now changed forever, and I may never go back to a normal life again. So I hope to make the most of what is happening right now. Whether or not I earn the trust of this leader depends on many things, including my own actions.
I hope for a good future, but I have no idea what that will that will look like anymore.'
