Chapter 1: What the fuck is a car?
6:30 pm, January 16, 2010, Chicago Illinois
I was Magnus, one of the youngest wizards alive to reach the heights of 9th-circle spells and beyond. I was the one who slew demon prince Demogorgon and stopped his savage tide from ravaging tens of thousands. After using a [Wish] to send myself somewhere where I can study unhindered, I manifested on what looks like a black road of some kind with faded yellow stripes going forward. Along this road were the strange towers of stone and glass and poles that emit light along its side paths. There were what looked like humans in strange clothing walking along the side paths, seemingly unaware of my presence.
I sat up, adjusted my hat back on my head, and considered my next course of action when there was a blaring horn right behind me. Before I can process the sound, I'm slammed in the back and go a few feet forward landing flat on my face and cracking a few ribs. Not even 1 minute in a new world and I'm already in a fight. Gods all I need is 5 minutes to look around. Is that too much?
Standing up, I see this monster of metal. It growled like a lion and its eyes beamed a bright light that it most likely uses to stun prey. But I was not its next meal. Looking closely, I see it as an individual inside of it looking through its clear carapace. He was shaking his head, no, to run from this thing that had taken it. But I won't. This is an evil being. So, I do what I normally do. I slay it.
I point my finger at it, it must sense what I'm going to do as it starts squealing in fear. But it is too late to flee. I cast [Disintegrate] on the metal beast aiming for its perfectly aligned shiny teeth. A thin green beam shoots from my finger and strikes it. In about a second, it is slayed becoming a large pile of dust on the black road. Its prey sat in the middle of it, most likely stunned. I should approach him to provide aid.
I walked to this man; he didn't have any wounds besides the bandage on his arm and holding a small rock of some kind and it was emitting light. A quick use of my permanent [Detect Magic] reveals it isn't something of arcane origin. I noticed was speaking into this rock, saying something about a parahuman attack. What is this parahuman attack? Was it what the car was? I will have to ask that later. He goes stiff as I get within talking distance, I can hear words coming from it.
"Sir, Sir! Can you hear me? Dispatch this is Officer Bradley, possible Parahuman attack on West Davidson Street! Suspected brute 1 and blaster 3 classification!" it went on for another minute before I decided to speak.
"Are you alright Sir? The metal beast is now a pile of dust so there is no need to be afraid." I point to his arm; he starts visibly sweating as the rock speaks more but I ignore it for now. I reach out for his arm.
"Let me heal that real quick." He almost recoils at my touch. I cast [Cure Light Wounds] on him. A soft golden pulse runs through his arm and throughout his body. For a moment he just stared at it. The bandage he had wrapped around it comes loose revealing his now fixed arm. He flexes it and adds weight to it, trying to find a flaw in it.
"You have healing powers? Are you like Panacea?" Is this 'Panacea' the local healer or someone who can cast healing magic? I should ask that.
"Who is this Panacea? Is she a local healer or cleric?" He just stares at me like I grew a second head.
"Panacea, the world's greatest healer. She shows up to help along with her family for end bringer fights, how do you not know her?" What the Fuck is an Endbringer?
"What is an Endbringer? Is that like a monster like the Tarrasque or a dragon of old?" If there are dragons or things of massive danger, I should do and help. It could be fun!
"Have you been living under a damn rock? How can you not know all this?" I think the lack of pain in his arm caused him to recognize his surroundings and look down at the dead beast.
"Are you a new Cape or something? If you are so I can get my damn insurance to cover for you erasing my car." What the Fuck is a car? Is that the name of the beast's species or something?
"The Hells is a car? I thought it was a beast of some kind." His face scrunched up like he was ready to yell at me when we both turned to hear the screeching. It sounded like this car I slayed. So, car is the species name! multiple of these cars came to us, stopping at about 100ft away. Their baleful eyes pointed right at us.
People in armor come out of them holding these strange black objects in their hands like one would hold a crossbow. They most likely do the same thing. One of them holds a rock connected by this black tendril to this car and starts talking into it, his voice is amplified by it somehow. And not a shred of magic from any of this! Fascinating!
"Unknown Parahuman, Step away from the man and have your hands above your head, you are under arrest for the destruction of private property and the unauthorized use of powers on someone else." Oh, so these cars are not beasts? Well, now I feel kinda bad. But he did hit me with it.
"The man hit me with this car when I just manifested in this universe. I thought it was some metal beast that had him as its prey! Besides I fixed his arm that was injured before all this."
That got them to just freeze up. They looked at each other, I could not see their whole face but I could feel the uncertainty from there. Is healing that rare in this world? The one holding the rock spoke again.
"Sir, can you verify his statement?" "Uh yeah, I did hit him with my car. He just showed up out of nowhere! There was no flash or boom or nothing. But he did fix my arm! I had broken it earlier when I fell on it while cleaning my gutters last week." This got them more confused about what to do. I should just move on to the alley over there and hide, before I can do anything a voice comes from the sky.
"So this is all just a big misunderstanding. Let's put down the weapons and talk like people." There was this man. He looked old and had a boring brown burlap robe with an old-looking stick in his hands. For a moment, I thought this was a fellow wizard, but he also didn't radiate any magic either. What the fuck is up with this world and having no magic around?
He touches down about 30 feet from us, blocking the people who came out of those cars. He carried himself with certainty in his heart.
"My name is Myrddin and I am the leader of the Chicago Protectorate team. You say you manifested here from another world. I do not want to say you didn't but I think you can some benefit of the doubt since you did heal this man."
"Quick question though, why don't I sense magic from you? You were flying earlier and those people over there also have no magic presence, why is that?" he looked at me strangely for a moment before asking a question of his own.
"You believe you are performing magic?" "I do not believe, I know I am." First, he dresses up like a hedge mage, and now he doubts me.
"Oh, can you also fly, can you turn into other beings?" he sounded almost mocking. Though it might be me not liking his non-wizard attire. Why wears a hood when a magnificent hat is better,
"I can do you something better. Watch me!" with that, I cast [Polymorph] on myself, turning myself into a young red dragon. An arcane sigil of Transmutation wraps around me as I transform. I saw the faker, gesture to the men behind him to stop. Were they going to shoot me while I transformed? That's rude.
I spread out as my body doubled in size. Strong wings explode from my back as my face elongates along with my neck. A strong tail just out from my back as I readjust my posture to a quadrupedal stance, my wings curl back onto me like a cloak. I am clad in ruby-red scales that are like armor. Overall, I look cool.
He was just stunned. I think he tried to do something as I felt my scrying defense ping. At least I think it was from him. He stared for a long time before he started muttering.
"Shit, I can't understand his power. Anti-thinker power or is he telling the truth? Better deescalate." He then started talking out loud.
"Truly impressive young man, tell me. Is this the extent of your abilities? Even if it is, I would like to offer you a place to sleep and a job. If you truly are from another world, you are going to need help getting some identification. Help that I can provide. I can even help you get your healing certified and you classified as a fellow hero. What do you say?" Ah, I know his gamble. Since he is willing to at least entertain the idea that I am telling the truth, he wants me to join his group. I would get work and somewhere to sleep and whatever this identification is to help me while I'm here. I don't really see a downside to this.
I dismiss the spell and stand slightly to the left of where I was. "Sure thing old man. This world sounds like it needs a real wizard around. But what about the guy's car thing?" he just waves it off "The PRT will cover for it. Now do you want to fly over to my command center or do you want to ride in the car?" I cast [Fly] on myself. Gravity no longer binds me to the ground.
"Flying, it's faster and more fun." He chuckles, "Let's see if you can keep up." With that, he speeds off like a falcon. I see how it is old man. I cast [haste] on myself. Soon in less than a second I am right next to him. He seemed impressed, "We should be getting there in a few minutes. How long does this spell of yours last?" "3 and a half hours. But can refresh it if I need to." His mouth opened slightly before he schooled his expression.
"Do all of your spells last this long?" "It depends, some can last like 2 minutes and some can last almost a month. It depends on what I have ready for that moment. With my magic, I can do a lot more than the stuff I showed you."
We talked about this world and he filled me in on some things but said we should get to his base.
When we arrived at it, it was a sight. It was a gray rectangle-like building. It had fences along the perimeter. There were more of these cars in a penned off area with someone walking to one of them. We landed in what I assume to be the entrance of it. It had these clear doors that open automatically with not a lick of magic. Gods this is a strange world. We walk to the front desk when this woman in a uniform looks up at us and scrambles to fix something.
"Mr. Myrddin sir, who is the young man standing behind you?" he looks at me "He is both a possible recruit and someone who needs some help. Open up please." She nods and presses something that follows a buzzing sound. The door next to us opened.
He motions for me to follow along, this is so surreal. From the floor to the walls, everything was uniform and smooth. He leads me to an office of a sort and gestures to the seat in front of it. I take it and he take the other.
"So, now we can talk privately. Tell me all about how you got here and I will give you a sales pitch on why you should join the PRT. I will still help you with the ID if you refuse." He seems straight forward with his dealing. "But if you do join, you'll have to go through pain in the ass paperwork, power testing, well in your case spell testing, and more pain in the ass things. But you'll be a part of a group that helps fight evil. you don't have to decide now. We will set you up somewhere here to sleep and figure all this out in the morning." "I said I will join."
This makes him pause. "May I ask why?" "I might as well join. Your frankness of the pain in the ass stuff and you willing to help me out regardless of me joining is what convinced me." Its truly refreshing to just be told how things would be if I joined. "Also, this organization needs a real wizard and not just some old man waving a stick around."
"Fine kid. Welcome aboard. We will get all this squared away in the morning. Lets get you something for dinner. Have you ever had a burger?" he stands up and leads me from the room.
"The Hells a burger?"
