Chapter 48
When they got home, Syrax called for Calypso to summon her master. Unlike before, whenever they call now, he comes nearly instantly. Perhaps he was just as curious as to what was going on. When he arrived he told Toshi to strip down. He shuttered at the notion but nodded and excused himself.
"Wise one, may I ask you something?" Syrax questioned.
"Of course my dear!"
"I heard my little ones calling out through my husband today… is that normal?" she asked.
He appeared curious. "They were calling out?"
"Just a chirp, but still, we could hear them, in fact, the mortals who were near by also could hear them."
That was when the old goat appeared curious, when he said such a thing. Toshi came back out but was red in the face. He had stripped himself down but, didn't like to see himself in such a condition.
"Can we make this quick…" he asked gently.
The old goat nodded as Toshi was seated comfortable. He inspected his belly once more but then, did something different. With permission, he placed his hands on Toshi's stomach, and made some odd movements.
Toshi's eyes widened suddenly.
"Toshi?"
"They moved…" he whispered. "They… they're moving about!"
They hadn't done so before, yet the old goat continued to observe. "I believe they are just realizing they can, as well, they can speak… It's a slow introduction of life for the little ones…"
"But, how can we hear them?!" Toshi demanded. "I mean, it's not right is it?"
"You have chambers that contain the children, each child has their own chamber but are aware of their siblings, and they are testing to see if they can speak with each other. Or is your question more along the lines of, if they are speaking what are they surviving in? There is no fluid that surrounds your children compare to if they were being born by a mother. It is why a male grows out and becomes large, they act as a buffer to protect the children from outside harm."
"That…" Toshi said awkwardly. "But it does answer my question."
"Young dragon, you need to take into consideration this, the environment, nature VS nurture as well, how safe and fed you are. These factors are in play when it comes to your growing brood. I do admit, I am very impressed with you."
Toshi's face turned red as he shied away. "It's still embarrassing…" he muttered.
"Embarrassing or not, the fact is this. As mortals say, you manned up!" the old goat decreed. "I don't think it will be long for me to return and help you with the little ones." he explained.
"So soon?" Syrax asked. "It's only been seven months!"
"What did I say before?" the old goat asked gently. "He has been very well taken care of, continue to do so and it won't be long until you have your children in your arms."
With the checkup done, the old goat excused himself. Toshi was quick to get dressed once more, thankfully he has clothing that is easy to put on… since it knows how to dress him! "Remind me to thank your family for this clothing slime… I never thought such a thing existed…"
She smiled and nodded. "So… not much longer…" she said gently. Syrax couldn't contain herself as she approached Toshi. Her hands came on to his stomach as she waited and listened to see if her children would call again.
"It's exciting at the same time nerve wracking…" Toshi said. "I don't even know HOW they are going to be born."
"I… didn't consider that notion either…" she giggled. "But when the time comes, we will be ready." She decreed. "Now, let's get you back home to rest, you look tried."
He didn't argue with her. They returned home and Syrax was quick to tuck him in for a rest. She kissed his forehead as he passed out shortly after. This was something she kept a close eye on. Toshi grows tired quickly, but don't notice it. She sees it on his face and will quickly insist on a small nap for him. Luckily, he has never fought her on the notion and does so willingly.
He will be asleep for the next four hours, which would give her enough time to find out what is being made for dinner and how much of it.
