Attack On Titan: Wings Of Crystal

Chapter 59: What Could've Been

The train ride back to Marley was a long one. It had been going down the tracks all night and now morning has arrived. It wasn't until noon that they would finally arrive at their destination.

At Marley's train station, several soldiers were standing guard, ordered to escort the war heroes back to their homes safely. The Eldian soldiers were the first to exit the train, followed by the Marleyans, and lastly, the Warriors and their successors.

Gabi practically leapt through the exit door in excitement. She was so glad to finally be home after being away for so long. Colt was carried out of the train car by Galliard. He was suffering from a hangover after all the drinking last night. Nobody anticipated him being a lightweight. He even managed to throw up all over the floor before reaching their destination. Maybe Magath should've got them to stop after all.

Lazarus and Michael were among the last ones to exit the train. They took a moment to take in the sight of the big city. As terrible as Marley is, they cannot deny how nice it looks. Though the capital could never hold a candle to the beautiful shores of Odiha, which is where they're heading.

"I'd say it's good to be home, but… Nowadays I don't see this place as home anymore." Lazarus commented to himself.

"I agree. I feel like I've spent most of my life on that island." Michael replied as he watched Gabi, and the other candidates converse. "But it is their home. And we have no choice but to defend it, whether we like it or not."

"Yeah." Lazarus turns to his friend. "When do you wanna start working on this special project we've been talking about last night? You still wanna go through with making Gabi your successor?"

"Yeah, but not today. We only just got back. We all deserve some time to spend with our families. We can worry about the future tomorrow. But in the meantime, I'm gonna see my dad, get back to my house, and collapse on my bed."

Lazarus chuckled. He completely understood. They finally exit the train, step onto the platform and meet up with the candidates, Reiner, Annie, Pieck, and Galliard. Zeke and Bertolt have already left the platform. Lazarus watched them as they left. He was worried for both of them but in completely different ways. After hearing what Annie told him, he fears Bertolt's depression may grow bad enough to the point he may take his own life.

Though he was more worried about what Zeke may be up to. Ever since their last meeting, the two of them have been distant. He can't even recall a single moment he had a chat with him. Whenever he waved in his direction, Zeke just ignored him. Was he angry with his defection? Or was it something else? He began to wonder if he was hiding something.

Michael approaches Gabi and decides to tease her a little by sneaking up behind her and jumpscaring her by suddenly grabbing her shoulders. Gabi screams and throws a punch in retaliation as she turns without looking. This time she managed to land a hit on her mentor and struck him so hard that his glasses were knocked off.

Michael chuckled as he held his bleeding nose. "Hehe, nice one. Your reaction time has improved."

"You scared me to death, you ass!" She shouted up at him. Though her rage quickly subsided once she realised, she made his nose bleed with that punch. "Oh shit! Your nose!"

"It's fine. It'll heal." Michael reassured her whilst proving his point with his healing factor. He bends down to pick up his glasses, only to be met with a pair of boots standing in front of him. After picking them up, he looks up and sees that he's face to face with Galliard.

"Michael." He addressed him with a curt tone and a simple nod of acknowledgement.

"Galliard," Michael responded in kind.

The kids looked on with confusion as the two Titan Shifters glared at each other with such intensity. They could practically see the figurative bolt of lightning passing and clashing between their eyes. For some reason, those two did not like each other.

They didn't understand it, but Lazarus and the Warriors knew. Those two have been at odds with each other ever since they returned from Paradis. Galliard didn't trust Michael then and he still doesn't now. In his view, making him a Warrior just because he had the mythical Crystal Titan power didn't bode well with him. He saw him as nothing more than one of the island devils. Being born in Odiha or being Lazarus's first friend didn't matter to him. He also didn't like the way he was putting thoughts into Gabi's head. He could tell she's changed now because of him and didn't like it. Gabi should be free to believe in whatever she chooses to believe in, not take some stranger's word for it.

And Michael disliked Galliard for just accepting the lies Marley's fed him. Lazarus and the others – apart from maybe Zeke – have accepted the truths they've learnt on that island. He also wasn't truly grateful for Lazarus bringing the Jaw Titan back to him. He still partially blamed him and Reiner for his brother's death. And he was just a straight-up dick.

In the end, the two of them decided to put their disdain for each other aside for the sake of the kids. And to avoid getting in trouble with the brass.

"Break it up, you two." Annie decided to be the sensible one and get in between them.

Galliard was the first to back off and took his leave with some of the others. Michael thanked Annie for stopping what could've been the start of a bad argument which would've led to a fist fight.

"What was that all about?" Gabi asked Michael.

"Let's just say that Galliard and I don't exactly agree on certain topics," Michael answered as he placed his glasses back on his face. "You can't expect everyone in the Omega Unit to trust me just because I know Lazarus… By the way, Laz and I heard your comrades chanting your name all night."

"Colt put them up to it." She dismissed it out of embarrassment.

"No need to be embarrassed. You deserved a healthy dose of praise." Pieck intervened, placing her hands on her shoulders and giving her a warm smile. "What you did really was impressive."

"She's right," Michael added. "That took guts going out into the field of battle and throwing a bomb at a train. We're all proud of you!" He tells her with a warm smile.

Lazarus and Annie nod in agreement. Gabi blushes in response to all the praise she's getting from her superiors.

Meanwhile, Falco was looking over at Reiner who appeared to be consoling Bertolt. The two of them were sitting down on a bench and talking. From the way he was patting his back, it looked like he was trying to cheer Bertolt up and help him get over something. He wondered what it was.

Lazarus had the same thought. He could tap into his Titan powers and read their thoughts right now, but he respected their privacy. Whatever is going on between them is none of his business. But he'll always be there to help them if they need it.

The Warriors and their candidates eventually make it back to their hometown of Liberio. On the other side of the gates, hundreds of Eldians were patiently awaiting their return. Magath ordered the guards posted there to open them up, and the war heroes wasted no time reuniting with their friends, families, and loved ones.

"Looks like this is where we part ways for now." Lazarus turned to Annie.

"I'll see you soon." She replied with a smile. She then gives him a quick peck on the cheek before entering the gates. She spots her father near the front and embraces him. Lazarus was happy for her. Even though it had been four years since he reunited them, it still felt like just yesterday to him.

One by one he watched his friends and comrades reunite with their families. Pieck with her father. Galliard with his parents. And Reiner his mother. Beside her were Gabi's parents as well. Even Zeke had his grandparents there waiting for him.

Lazarus's smile slowly faded as he watched every one of his allies embrace their loved ones. He couldn't help but feel sad and lonely. Though he always considered Michael and the other Warriors his family, he still wished he had a parent or guardian to hug right now. Seeing his parents live their lives within the Paths made him realise how much he missed them and how he wished they were here. And, of course, there was Lucia. The closest thing he's had to a mother ever since Lydia passed the Female Titan on to her. Tears started to build up under his eyes the more he watched.

Michael was the last one to search for his family. He pushed past several Eldians, desperately trying to find Erwin, hoping he was hiding among them. But as the crowd began to disperse, he was beginning to wonder if he'd even bothered to show up. He was informed of his arrival just the same as everyone else, so where is he?

He knows he hates Marley and how its Eldian citizens are being treated, as well as him and Lazarus aiding them in the war against the Mid-East Allied Forces. But surely, he'd forget about all that for a moment and take his time to be there for his return.

"Maybe he overslept?" He speculated. He kept on searching long after everyone had returned to their homes, and still no sign of Erwin. He then turns to Lazarus out of desperation, hoping he'd seen him. He was confused as to why Lazarus was smiling at him. Did he find his desperation amusing?

"Michael."

Michael immediately turned himself around to face the man behind the voice that called out his name. He smiled happily when he finally spotted Erwin standing a few feet away from him.

He had changed so much in the last four years. He now had a stubble beard identical to Reiner's though it was neater and tidier compared to the new Vice Chief. He was wearing what appeared to be a brown teacher's uniform. The fabric in the jacket seemed vintage. It was held closed by two buttons and there was a red handkerchief sticking out his left breast pocket. Underneath the jacket was a white shirt and a black tie. He wore darker brown trousers and brown shoes. In his left hand, he was carrying a brown leather briefcase. He was wearing a red armband on his left shoulder, marking him as an honorary Marleyan due to Michael being a Warrior at the time before his defection.

Michael was amazed at how smartly he was dressed. He looked almost identical to his father, who was also a teacher back on Paradis. The resemblance was uncanny. But he was done standing around and looking at him. He runs as fast as he can and wraps his arms around his neck. Erwin chuckles and returns the embrace, happy to hold his son in his arms again.

"I've missed you so much, Dad."

"And I you, son. Sorry I was late. I just finished teaching a class. Welcome home, Michael." Erwin greeted him warmly.

Lazarus approaches the two smiths. As soon as they broke off the hug, he extended his right arm to Erwin, who took hold of his hand and shook it.

"It's so good to see you again, Commander."

"We've been through this, Lazarus. I'm not your commander anymore."

"I know," Lazarus interjected. "But deep down, you'll always be the commander I'd follow. No one can command an army the same way you can. Not even General Magath."

Erwin responded with a single grunt. He looks over to the side and sees two Marleyan soldiers teasing the mentally unstable Eldian soldiers into thinking they are still on the field of battle by mimicking an explosion. It was a disgusting display. It made his blood boil. He peers down at his armband and is even more infuriated that he has to abide by their rules. He'd been dreaming of seeing the outside world for as long as he could remember. Now that he's living in it, he sometimes wishes he had died in the Battle of Shiganshina.

Despite his deep hatred of the Marleyans, he won't give them the satisfaction of knowing they'd gotten to him. He still had no regrets about coming here and spending his retirement with his son. He also took pride in his new purpose as a teacher and guiding the Eldian youth on the true path to life instead of the one paved by Marley.

"Let's return home. We can catch up on the way, away from those Marleyan scum."

Michael and Lazarus nodded in agreement, and the three of them started making their way back to Odiha. On the way, Lazarus glances back and spots Falco helping one of the injured Eldians up. It was the same one Michael had bumped into the other day.

"Falco!" He called out to him, getting the young boy's attention. "You wanna walk back with us till we get to your house?"

"No thank you, sir! I wanna get in some extra credit first, to increase my chances of being chosen!" He shouted back.

"Good lad! Just try not to push yourself too hard, okay?" Lazarus shouted back.

"I won't! I'll meet you all in a bit!" He returns to help the wounded soldier up after waving goodbye to his idol. "…It's ok, sir. You don't have to be afraid anymore." He attempted to calmly assure him.

But the wounded soldier was too focused on Lazarus, watching him walk away with Michael and whoever the third man was. He only saw the back of his head so he couldn't identify him… But there was something familiar about his posture and the way he was walking.

Suddenly, an image of Erwin Smith from the back appeared in his mind. His only eye widened with shock when he compared it to the back of the departing older gentleman. It was an exact match.

"…Commander Erwin?"

On the way home, Michael and Lazarus were catching Erwin up on the events of the war. Sharing with him details such as the battle tactics they've utilised. The story on how conventional weapons have now surpassed the Titans. And the progress made on the candidates. Erwin was pleased that his teachings had finally gotten through to Gabi in the end, as well as the other candidates. His plan to turn the next Warriors against Marley is starting to take shape.

The boys then explained Michael's plan of making Gabi the successor for the Crystal Titan as a backup plan in case he were to die before Lazarus could inherit the Founding Titan and erase the power of the Titans from the world forever. Erwin was in the same boat as Lazarus and had doubts about this plan working. He also didn't want to think about the possibility of Michael dying either.

But when it came to Michael's theory about Eren, and possibly the Scouts, being in Marley, they were surprised to hear that Erwin already anticipated this. As the Scouts' former commander, he knows how they operate. He knew it was only a matter of time until they discovered the truth. They must've entered Grisha's basement and found the answers the doctor kept hidden all those years.

"Knowing Hange, she'll presumably have a few Scouts deep undercover as citizens gathering as much intel on the outside world as possible. They're up against a powerful nation that knows more about the outside world and how Titans work than they do. They also have access to technology hundreds of years ahead of what he had. Believe me, an attack on this city is inevitable." He explained under his breath, ensuring no one overhears them.

"Erwin," Lazarus spoke up quietly. "…if I hadn't brought you back with us and you were still commander of the Scouts, what would you have done once the truth was out? How would you have planned an attack on Marley?" He asked curiously.

Erwin took his time thinking about how to answer that question. He hadn't thought about battle tactics in years. He'd gotten so used to his new life as a teacher and father that he'd almost forgotten his old ways. But Lazarus was expecting an honest answer from the commander of the Scout Regiment, not Michael's father.

"… I'd start by recruiting more soldiers into the Survey Corps to numbers never seen before. Once the people learn the truth about the outside world, I imagine there'd be many who rally behind us, even civilians. I'd start revamping what the Survey Corps are about and slowly turn them into an army that's prepared to fight back against Marley. New ODM gear with firearms would be given to the recruits whilst the experienced veterans would wield Thunder Spears. Titans are no longer the enemy. Humanity is. Given that Marley's strength comes from the power of the Titans and the humans who are helping them, I'd expect the Scout Regiment to move on from their old ways of thinking… That wall at the edge of the island, cutting us off from the sea. I would've had a base set up there to intercept Marleyan forces. I would have it fortified with advanced weapons and have Eren present at all times to utilise his Titan powers."

Michael and Lazarus were impressed by the level of detail Erwin had put into his hypothesis so far. As he explained how he would've done things, the boys attempted to imagine how the what-if scenario would play out. They both assumed that they'd be on Marley's side in this alternate universe, seeing no way the Scouts would welcome them back after defecting from Marley. The same goes for the rest of the Warriors too.

"From what you've told me about the Mid-East Allied Forces, I would've approached them and asked them to ally themselves with Paradis."

That scenario was one they couldn't see happening in an alternate universe. They've fought those other nations. They've made it clear to them that they all view Eldians as devils as much as Marley does. It was the one thing they could agree on.

"What makes you think they'd join forces with the Scouts?" Michael asked, curious to hear his response.

"Hear me out. While it's true the whole world hates Paradis as you've previously mentioned. Based on everything I know; Marley is equally as hated. For a hundred years, they've used seven of the Eleven Titan powers to dominate most of the world, invading several counties along the way and forcing their civilians to join their army. None of those victories would've been possible without the power of the Titans. If the Warriors were all eliminated, Marley would've lost the Mid-East war… Don't quote me on this, but my strategy could've destroyed the Warrior Unit before it even happened. Eliminating them would change how millions of people around the world perceive Paradis. While it wouldn't magically stop prejudice against Eldians, at the very least it could allow the island to make allies with the Middle East… When it comes to war, certain countries are willing to win by any means necessary. Joining Paradis would be the lesser of two evils." He continued.

Lazarus agreed with him on that. Marley served as a perfect example of this too. Because they were oppressed for 2000 years by the Titans. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, they didn't hesitate to take seven Titan Shifters and use them for themselves. They also didn't hesitate to create their own Titan once the possibility to do so was handed to them on a silver platter.

Erwin continued with his hypothesis. By now he'd already learned of the Rumbling from Lazarus and the great devastation it could cause if unleashed on the world. Had Erwin learned of this in his what-if scenario, he would always have treated it as a last resort against their enemies, but only utilise a small-scale Rumbling using the Titans in the wall around Shiganshina, as well as only have it attack Marley's port and base, preventing them from attacking in the next 50 years or so. He would never put it as his first choice as unleashing the Rumbling will only make Paradis a bigger target to those who've survived.

Had Armin survived, he would imagine he too would've come up with a plan similar to his own. While he has complete faith in Hange to lead the Survey Corps in his place, he's unsure if she could come up with a strategy as well thought out and foolproof as his.

His hypothesis was entertaining and kinda scary to listen to for Michael and Lazarus. Erwin could've made things so much worse for Marley had he still been in charge. They're even more grateful now that he's on their side. Not Marley's side, theirs.

"… And lastly, as for how I'd lead an attack on Marley itself. I'd make capturing the enemy Titan Shifters our first priority. By launching a surprise attack on their Warrior Unit and stripping them of their powers, Marley will be weakened to a point where they could potentially be destroyed. And since the Winged Titan is no longer under their control, they'd be unable to fight back." He turns to Lazarus. "The question is whose side would you be on in my hypothetical timeline?"

"I… I would say I'd fight on behalf of Paradis, but that would be a lie." Those words caused Michael to look over at him as well. Before he could ask him why, Lazarus continued.

"If you went through with capturing my friends and having them killed to take their powers, I most likely would be so consumed with rage over their deaths that I'd attack both sides. Marley is corrupt, but anyone who takes away the people I love are the ones I view as truly evil."

Michael was shocked by his answer, though it wasn't unpredictable. He's made it clear to him on many occasions – too many than he would've liked – that the Warriors, candidates, and their families are the only lives he prioritises more. He's unsure whether he should find it admirable, or terrifying.

His answer was to be expected by Erwin. Over the time he'd gotten to know him as a Scout, and a person, he understood that Lazarus was the kind of person who put the needs of those he cared about over his own. He threatened to destroy Marley, the Survey Corps, and the world just to keep his loved ones safe and ensure they got to live their lives. It reminded him of another cadet within the 104th who desires the same things. Freedom for himself and the people in his life.

"I expected that to be your response." He spoke wisely. "It is a good thing you brought me with you. Had I chosen to go back, Paradis wouldn't stand a chance of becoming an independent nation… The Battle of Shiganshina was hard for us. So many soldiers died for my dream. Most of which whom to your friend, the Beast Titan's, hands."

"That's the thing." Lazarus unintentionally interrupted him. "I don't think Zeke is my friend anymore. Or anyone's for that matter."

"Whatever the case, I truly see now that coming here with you two is the best outcome for Paradis. When the Scouts come here, and they will, they're gonna need all the help they can get to stop Marley."

"Agreed." Michael butted in. "With you by our side, the others will hopefully hear us out and learn to accept our help. I know they'll never forgive or trust us, but they don't need to. Like you said, Dad. Working with me, Lazarus and the Warriors would be the lesser of two evils when it comes to the whole of Marley."

Erwin and Lazarus nodded in agreement. They eventually arrive in Odiha and take a break on the benches facing the ocean. That long discussion inspired the three of them to make preparations for the inevitable war between Marley and Paradis. They'll be on their own for this war while the Warriors will be forced to fight on Marley's behalf. They need to get them out from under Marley's thumb and somehow find a way to get close to the Scouts so they can take the Founding Titan away from Eren.

Lazarus decided to take his leave and head back to Liberio, but he was stopped by Michael who grabbed him by his jacket sleeve.

"Where are you going?"

"To Lucia's old shop in Liberio. We need to be ready for the Scouts whenever they decide to attack. I've still got tons of new ODM gear that need putting together. You should start working on this plan of yours with Gabi. Do some more research on your Titan. We need to be sure what you told me is possible. I will do some research on my powers as well. See if I can transfer a portion of a Titan's power or not."

"Ok. Good idea." Michael replied. The two friends stand up to face each other. They both unveil their necklaces and show them to each other. "Good luck with your training."

"And you with your research." He then turns to Erwin. "And thank you for being honest with us, Erwin. I'm really glad you're with us in all this. But I thought you said you weren't gonna be involved in any conflict with Paradis as part of our agreement to bring you here.

"I said I wouldn't be involved in any conflict against Paradis. There's a difference between fighting with one side and fighting against another. My heart will always be devoted to my people. That includes you two."

Lazarus smiled and tipped his hat to the former commander out of respect for him. He soon walks away until he is out of sight, leaving the father and son alone.

"Dad, do you really believe Lazarus was serious about killing everyone on both sides out of revenge?" Michael hesitantly asked.

"I do," Erwin answered seconds after hearing the question. "Lazarus and Eren are not so different when it comes to using any means necessary to protect their allies. I've seen it myself during past conflicts with your Warrior comrades. That's also why I believed him when he told me about Eren unleashing a full-scale Rumbling on the world… But between the two of them, I know Eren is the only one strong enough to follow through on that promise."

He turns to Michael and looks him in the eye. "My guess is Eren will be even more determined than ever before to make sure his friends live long lives, especially now that he's lost his closest friend, Armin. You two have to stop Lazarus's vision of the Rumbling from coming true no matter what the cost. The fate of the world, and Paradis, depends upon it."

A few days later, Lazarus was busy building new weapons for his, Michael's, and Erwin's, Wings of Crystal movement in preparation for whenever the Scouts make their move on Marley. They weren't primarily for the Scouts themselves but for Eren. Other than Marley itself, he was also designated an enemy.

The shop was still boarded up and run down as he left it. He'd been so focused on mastering the strongest of his powers that he hadn't found any time to clean it up. He felt he'd have all the time in the world to do so once the war was over and the world was free of Titans.

After hearing Erwin's hypothesis on what he perceived as a possible attack on Liberio, he was more determined to complete the new improved ODM gear of his design. He made three different types. The first was a replication of his old Cloud Zero. The design was pretty much the same complete with katana blades, sleeker canisters, and a red colour scheme. The only new feature was the Wings of Crystal symbol engraved on the side of the canisters.

The second set was a new variant on the firearm ODM gear he'd received from Michael. They were the same ones Michael wielded at the battle of Fort Slava. Guns with improved range, fire rate, and ammo capacity. The guns were coloured white and blue. They were stashed in a box labelled "Ace Barrel" the name of the weapons given by their creator.

The third and final set were still in development as they've proven to be more difficult in theory than he was expecting. At first, they seemed impossible to make a reality. But thanks to the intel gathered on the Mid-East Allied Forces' advanced weapons, he was able to make it work. But he still has a long way to go before he can successfully build a prototype for each.

For now, they were both stashed in a box labelled "Special Forces". All that could be seen was a huge gun barrel sticking out of the box. Way too big to be wielded by a human.

"I know I'm so close, I can feel it!" He thought to himself. "If I can just figure out how to miniaturise an anti-Titan cannon and its shells, I can create an anti-Titan rifle. Would be hella useful against the Wall Titans should Eren succeed in freeing them… As for my other special weapon, I don't even know where to begin with it. This thing is more ridiculous than an anti-Titan rifle. But if I could pull it off, I'd have something that not even Eren could defend against.

He was unexpectedly startled out of his train of thought by a loud knocking sound coming from upstairs. He was working in the shop's hidden basement that Lucia had kept hidden from the public. Only she and Lazarus know of it.

Lazarus held his nerve as he materialised a crystal dagger in his hand as he climbed the ladder out and gently opened the trap door. He quickly, but quietly sneaks out and reseals the trapdoor with a padlock and covers it up with a fake floor panel. He was in the back of the shop, away from any prying eyes.

He walks to the front of the store and readies the dagger behind his back in case whoever it was decided to jump him. Ever since he defected, Marley had spies watching his, and Michael's, every move. Making sure they weren't planning anything. They thought they were keeping him in line as much as he was keeping them.

When Lazarus peeked out the window between two of the boards, he sighed with relief when it only turned out to be Annie. He disintegrates the dagger and opens the front door for her.

"Annie? What are you doing here? Weren't you supposed to be teaching the candidates today?"

"I was. But Zeke has called a meeting and demands all the Warriors to be present. I'm here to tell you that includes you." She answered.

Lazarus was a little taken aback by that. "I may still be considered a Warrior to you and some of the others, but you all know I'm technically not anymore. Zeke was the one who acknowledged it. So why does he want me there now?"

"He said it's because whatever he's had planned involves you and Michael. You being there was part of some kind of deal he's made. He also has certain things he can't discuss in front of the brass."

"Ah, I see. He wants me to use my telepathic ability to tell us some kind of hidden motive because he knows the brass always listens in on private discussions between us. That's it, right?" Lazarus assumed.

Annie nodded in response. This intrigued Lazarus. He and Zeke haven't so much as battered an eye at each other since his defection and the end of the war. Now all of a sudden, he's trusting him with whatever he has to say. Something was off about this. He doubts Zeke is trying to get in his good graces again and try to reconcile their friendship, as much as he wished for that to be true. He needs something from him. Whatever this "deal" he made must be very important if he's willing to share details with him.

"Well then, we best not keep him waiting. Let's go get Michael." Lazarus declares as he offers his arm to Annie, who accepts it. The two of them start walking towards Odiha. As they were walking, Lazarus noticed that Annie was limping slightly. "Are you alright? You look like you're struggling to walk.

"That's because I am. I'm still recovering from the fierce pounding you gave me last night." She responded bluntly, causing Lazarus's face to redden with embarrassment.

"Oh! Shit, sorry if I was too rough. I was only following your lead." He gulped nervously.

"It's fine. You're getting a lot better at it." She reassured him. She pauses momentarily to turn around and face him. "… But we are NOT trying that position again!"

"Fair enough." Lazarus nodded in agreement, chuckling to himself nervously.

They eventually reach Michael's house and pass on the message. Unfortunately, Michael wasn't able to join in on this meeting. He was elbow-deep in the many history books of Eldia and the power of the Titans. Too focused on trying to properly understand how it works and whether or not his theory could be pulled off.

Annie didn't exactly say Michael needed to be present for this meeting since he was never officially made a Warrior. The knighting ceremony Lazarus performed on him atop Wall Maria didn't count either.

They both arrive at Zeke's office within the Marleyan military headquarters. All the other Warriors were already present and accounted for. Colt was there too. As Zeke's successor, he was given the privilege of being an honorary Warrior even if he hadn't received the Beast Titan yet.

Everyone was sitting around a table while Zeke was in the corner brewing a cup of tea for everyone. Pieck was splayed out on the sofa, leaving no space for anyone. She was still in the process of mentally getting used to being bipedal again. It's only been a few days since she changed back to human, so it'll be a while until she's 100% back to normal.

Unfortunately, Lazarus didn't even notice her until he was about to sit down on the sofa, only to be startled by the sensation of something soft making contact with his rear. Too soft to be the sofa.

"Ahh! Oh god! Sorry, Pieck. I didn't see you down there."

Pieck only giggles in response and greets Lazarus with her signature warming smile, completely ignoring the fact that Lazarus just sat on her.

"It's ok, Lazarus. Sorry I'm taking up the whole sofa. Lying down on my front feels more natural to me. I can't help it."

Lazarus backs away from the sofa and accidently bumps into Annie who was glaring up at him with a gloomy aura hanging over her. He could tell by the intense angry look in her eyes that she did not like that. He offers her the only free chair left in the room as a way of apologising. But Annie makes a silent promise to kick his ass after the meeting ends and sits down.

That whole display brought a smile to Reiner and Bertolt's faces. Both of them have been going through a hard time since they got back. It was nice to see that not everything has changed between their unit. Lazarus always had a way of bringing joy to the squad even if he didn't mean to half the time. Though Zeke and Galliard weren't amused.

"Sorry, we don't have enough chairs for you, Lazarus." Colt addressed him. "I had no idea you were attending this meeting. I didn't think it concerned you since you're not working for Marley anymore."

"It's alright, Colt. I'll just stand." He leans up against the wall with his arms folded. He turns to Zeke who has just finished offering the others a cup of tea. "Why are we all meeting in your office, Zeke? And where's the brass?"

"They're not here in this room." He hands the last cup to Lazarus who was expecting not to get any considering how Zeke has been behaving around him lately. "Is it hard to believe that I wanted us to meet for some tea and chat?"

"Had you asked me that nine years ago I would've said no. But I know you wouldn't have called me here if you didn't need something from me. It's evidently clear that you told the brass not to come in today because they would disapprove of me or Michael being a part of any discussions going on between Marley's officers." Lazarus stated.

"Where is Michael?" Bertolt asked.

Lazarus briefly turns away to answer Bertolt's question. "He's… otherwise engaged in his projects. I'll pass on whatever message you wanna give him." He turns back to Zeke. "Why am I really here? The past four years you wouldn't talk to me. Now you wanna cut me in whatever it is you are planning?"

Zeke takes a sip of his tea before answering him. "… Look, Lazarus. I know I have been distant with you lately, but you have to understand why. It's because you've turned your back on Marley. I understand why you would. But not everyone in this room has the luxury of being immortal like you."

"You don't think I don't know that?" Lazarus retorted. "I said what I said to the Brass to protect all of us. Most of you were gonna be executed for my failures. I did what I did to protect all of us. I don't fight for them anymore. I fight for myself and the people in my life. That includes you, Zeke… I just wish you could've seen that."

"I do see that, Lazarus. That's preciously why I asked you to be part of this. That, and that other thing we talked about yesterday." As he says this, Zeke shifts his eyes over to his left, pointing Lazarus's view towards the gramophone sitting on a side table beside his desk in between a globe and a full bookshelf.

Lazarus nodded, knowing exactly what he was referring to. Everyone was aware that the brass was listening in on them through the gramophone. Zeke will only let them hear what he wants them to hear. Everything else he will speak through telepathy.

But what Zeke and the others didn't know is that the Brass weren't the only ones listening in on their conversation. Lazarus had a crystal earpiece hidden in his right ear. Designed by Michael to act as a receiver and allow him and Erwin to listen in from Odiha. He didn't even worry about them seeing it as his ears had always been covered up by his long white hair.

"So, you said you had a plan that involves me somehow. Now that we're all present, care to explain what it is?" Galliard addressed their leader.

"Right." Zeke takes his seat at the head of the table and finishes off his tea before getting down to business. "Now then, the battle at Fort Slava made it clear that conventional weapons are advancing fast. They'll soon be stronger than the Titans. The world used to live in fear of your Titan, Lazarus. But the rate these things are developing, it's only a matter of time until they create a weapon far stronger than you. That's bad news on two fronts. We'll lose our tactical value as Marley loses her strength. This threatens the whole Eldian Race. You may not be loyal to Marley, but you are loyal to the Eldians, right?"

"Of course, I am," Lazarus answered, as if he was offended he would even accuse him of not being loyal to his people.

"Good. There is but one solution to this problem. Marley must seize the Founding Titan's power, as well as the resources of Paradis." Zeke gets up from his chair and examines his globe. His index finger was placed specifically on the tiny island of Paradis. "Before that, the world must be reminded of the terrible threat that island poses to us all. And every good story needs a narrator."

He then reaches into his inner jacket pocket and pulls out an old photograph. He places it in the middle of the table, allowing everyone to see it. It was a picture of a large family of what appeared to be rich aristocrats. With a tall man standing behind them, possibly the head of the family. An old couple. A middle-aged woman, presumably the man's wife. Five children. And a woman dressed in a maid's outfit.

"The Tybur Family will provide one for us." He concluded.

Lazarus raises his eyebrows with interest. Everyone knows who the Tybur Family are. They were made famous when their ancestors helped drive off King Fritz during the Great Titan War. Because of this, they weren't hated like most Eldians. They were also the keepers of the Warhammer Titan. A Titan whose ability to harden and construct is second only to the Crystal Titan itself. His and Michael's families have all had a run-in with them too. He's now starting to wonder why he was required for this meeting. The Tybur's probably wanna see the result of their greatest creation for themselves.

"Hold on. They're the keepers of the Warhammer. Is that right?" Colt asked.

"Yeah, but the Tyburs have never once used the Warhammer Titan against an enemy state," Pieck explained. She started to get the gist of what Zeke's idea is. "If we speak through the Tyburs the world will hear us out."

"As bright as ever, Pieck. You're absolutely right." Zeke praised.

"But the Tyburs have been living lives of luxury and freedom. They've never fought for their country or their people. Why should they get to play hero now?" Galliard questioned. They, as Warriors, have done all the hard work defending their people. So why should they get any credit, he wondered.

"Because the Tyburs are the ones responsible for the Winged Titan's creation," Lazarus spoke out, drawing all eyes to him.

Colt, Pieck, and Galliard were surprised by this news. There wasn't much talk about the False Founder's Project, or the other experiments going down at the Eden's Nest. Which was the overall point behind a top-secret project. The others know because Lazarus had told them back on Paradis. And Zeke read through the files he's kept relating to the project.

Lazarus continued his explanation aloud. He has no fear of the Brass hearing them as they already knew about the projects.

"The Tyburs were the ones who started it all. They funded the resources needed to build the underground labs known as "Eden's Nest". They recruited mine, and Michael's, parents to work for them and supply them with strong Warrior candidates to take part. I was among the last few chosen. They also provided the spinal fluid of all nine Titans to create the serum they would later inject into me. I was the only successful test subject. The purpose of the experiment was to create a second Founding Titan that is capable of all the things the original can do. But instead, we got the Winged Titan. I may not have the Founder's god-like powers, but the abilities I do have led to many victories for Marley." He explained. "Victories I wish I could take back."

His thoughts echoed throughout the other Warriors' heads. They all held back their reaction to not draw suspicion from the brass. But Galliard was still relatively new to this and unconsciously gasped.

Annie was able to save face by pretending she'd seen a spider in the room and acted like she'd just squashed it. Hopefully, the brass didn't suspect anything.

"All true," Zeke confirmed for those in the room who were unconvinced. "The Tyburs agreed to help us in exchange for one favour… They want to meet the Winged Titan in person. I already agreed to it on your behalf so I'm hoping you're not thinking of backing out-

"I'll do it." Lazarus interrupted. "I'm sure the Tyburs are just as concerned about Eldians as we are. If meeting me is all it takes for them to lend a hand, then so be it."

"Good to hear that… in a month from now a festival will take place here in Liberio. Foreign dignitaries and VIPs will be invited to hear this announcement from the Tyburs... We will conquer Paradis Island within the next year. The fates of the Eldian people and Marley rest on this plan. We cannot let it fail. And if you really value our lives, Lazarus, you will help us do it. For the future of our race, we must join our hearts and minds as one."

Michael and Erwin were listening in to every word of this meeting in their living room. The voices that were picked up on Lazarus's earpiece were transmitted through the air and exited out of a crystal gramophone sitting in the middle of the table. He had a wire connected to a crystal headpiece on Michael's head, allowing Erwin to hear their telepathic discussion.

This plan of Zeke's didn't bode well with the two Smiths. Using praised heroes of the Great Titan War to unite the whole world against Paradis would mean the end of their island and a guarantee of war. Resulting in the unleashing of the Rumbling.

"Damn you, Zeke!" Michael thought to himself. "I knew he was up to something."

"Michael," Erwin spoke up, snapping his son back into reality. "You mentioned the name Tybur to me once before. They blackmailed your parents into making Lazarus a test subject for the False Founder Project so you wouldn't have to."

"Yeah. That was the night I was attacked by assassins and awoke my Titan powers for the first time." Michael clarified. "I assume the man who started it all, Thomas Tybur, is long dead by now, assuming he had the Warhammer Titan. So, we won't know for certain if they're still the same as they were back then. But what I do know is that they'll always be loyal to Marley."

Erwin was afraid he'd say that. If the Scouts were hiding among the populace right now and caught wind of this plan to unite the world against Paradis, they would retaliate and strike first. With Eren on the front lines. He'd prefer to avoid any further conflict with Marley for the time being. He still had faith in his son's plan to have the Zeta Warrior Unit turn against their oppressors. He's done his part with his lessons. The seeds of doubt have been planted within their youthful minds. Some have grown at a much faster rate than others, like Gabi and Falco. But Colt was like Zeke's right-hand man, always by his side 24/7. If they were to seize the Beast Titan's power, they'd have to turn an ally into a Pure Titan and have them eat Zeke before Colt.

They continued listening in on the meeting until it was brought to a close by the aforementioned War Chief. From the sounds of chairs scraping and fading footsteps, they can confirm everyone was leaving the room.

However, Zeke had asked Lazarus to follow him into an alleyway far away from Marley's prying ears. Still unaware of the earpiece hidden in Lazarus's ear.

"What is now, Zeke? Whatever else you have to say you could've just thought it. Why bring me out here in a dark alleyway?" His eyes scan the area, preparing himself for an ambush.

"Relax, Lazarus, this isn't an ambush. You can lower your guard." He attempted to assure him, but to no avail. "Your telepathic ability is an open line where anyone/everyone who's ingested your spinal fluid can hear us. I brought you out here because I want this to be between just you and me."

"Oh…" Lazarus thought to himself. That makes sense to him. He wanted to wait until the other Warriors were out of range first. And in case they weren't, he could just whisper into his ear and right into Michael's living room.

"I know what you and Michael are up to." Zeke blurted out, catching the albino Warrior off guard. "… It's obvious you're trying to prevent any further conflict with Paradis. Believe it or not, I want the same thing."

Lazarus's head jolts back and faces Zeke directly. Did he hear him right? Does he want to protect Paradis? The same man who laughed as he shredded many Scouts to pieces with rocks. He finds that very hard to believe. And so did Erwin and Michael.

"What are you talking about?" Lazarus inquired of him.

"You're not the only one who has a plan to save the Eldian Race. Mister Xaver and I have been working on something that will break this cycle of hatred against Eldians."

"What plan?" He demanded of him.

"I'm afraid I can't tell you that. You knowing will put you and the others at risk. You've already caused enough trouble with your little tantrum during the last board meeting before the war. Do you really wanna risk destroying what you're fighting so hard to keep safe? Risk any potential future with Annie?" He asked as he readjusted his glasses.

Lazarus's eyes narrowed towards Zeke's threat. He didn't like what he was implying just now. It kind of sounded like there was a hidden message in his words, telling him not to breathe a word of what he'd just told him to anyone.

"Are you threatening me?"

"All I'm saying is that even though I have not shown it, I am still on your side. I want what's best for the world and its people. I only ask that you trust me and not say anything we've discussed to anyone. And in return, I won't tell the Marleyans about this secret "project" you've been working on in Miss Muller's old shop.

So, he was blackmailing him. This angered Lazarus. He, Michael, and Erwin have barely gotten started on their plan and already they've been found out. Now they have to constantly look over their shoulder every time they go out.

He'd really backed himself into a corner with this one. Now he has no choice but to do as Zeke tells him to. He'd been forced into a no-win situation just as he did the Marleyan military. It was ironic.

"Fine. If you wanna make things between us even more difficult, go right ahead. You may not care about me and the others anymore, but I do." Lazarus decides to leave now before things escalate into something worse than what it currently is.

"This plan of mine has been in the works long before you began the Paradis Operation," Zeke spoke out to him as he was leaving the alleyway. "It is a difficult and well thought plan that even the slightest miscalculation could lead to devastating consequences for Eldians as a whole. It is bigger than you. Bigger than me. Even bigger than the world itself. Know that in the long run, I have only done what was needed to ensure Eldia's future."

That last sentence caused Lazarus to stop and glance back at Zeke over his right shoulder.

"You know, Zeke. Ever since you've inherited your Titan, you've changed. You used to be a great guy. But I no longer see you as the friendly older brother figure I depended on to get me through training when I was scared. All I see is whatever "this" is… I don't know what kind of plan this is, nor do I care how big you make it out to be. But if it's the kind that makes you forget who your friends are, then it's a plan not worth following… I hope it's not too late for you to understand that." Those were his final words to him before departing the alley and disappearing from Zeke's sight.

A couple minutes after he left, Zeke was approached by a mysterious stranger. Their shadow cast in front of him, alerting Zeke to their presence. But he didn't care. He was too focused on lighting the fresh cigarette in his mouth. After taking a puff of his favourite brand, he addresses the figure without even looking back at them.

"You shouldn't be here, you know."

The figure closes in on Zeke and places their hand on his shoulder, forcing the War Chief to turn around and face them. The figure was revealed to be a tall Marleyan soldier with short blonde hair, grey, bored-looking eyes and a thin beard. The same one who'd been guarding Ymir's prison cell the day before her execution, as well as spying on Lazarus and Michael the day they travelled to the Paths to see Dante and Lydia's past.

"Were you followed?" He asked the soldier.

"No. The Marleyans suspect nothing. I overheard your little heart-to-heart chat with the Winged Titan. Isn't he a traitor now?" The soldier responded. The feminine tone of it confirmed her to be female, despite the beard.

"In the eyes of the brass, yes. But they haven't announced his desertion to the public, believing it may cause a panic. The Winged Titan is still viewed as a beacon of hope to the people of Marley and a symbol of fear to nations all over the world. Learning their most powerful asset has turned on Marley and holding a gun to her back will inspire them to recruit him to their aid and start another war. A war Marley will never win." He explained to his mysterious comrade. "Have you been keeping an eye on him and Michael?"

"Yes. Just as you've said, Lazarus is planning something big inside his mentor's shop. I couldn't find any, but I saw him carrying ODM gear around. But they're not like the ones you showed Kiyomi Azumabito. They were more advanced."

Zeke takes another puff of his cigarette as he processes this information. Lazarus had already demonstrated himself to be a great blacksmith and engineer like Lucia before him. His craftsmanship with the standard ODM gear was finer than the ones used by the people of the walls. If the rumours of him starting a revolution within Marley's borders were true, then Marley would have more than Paradis to worry about.

"… I see. Good work, Yelena."

Yelena's face glowed with joy and satisfaction knowing she did the man she admired more than anyone else proud. Maybe if she plays her cards right he'll reward her later.

"It is my pleasure to serve you, Zeke." She responded proudly with a little bow. "Is there anything else you need me to do? Should I continue to observe them?"

"For now. But when the time of the festival draws near, I need you to relay a message to the Scouts… Tell them they have my support. I will fill them in on the details of the plan for attack later."

Yelena nods with a smile and leaves. Zeke takes one last huff of his cigarette before tossing it on the ground and stomping on it to put out the flame.

"The time has almost come. The time to initiate the Euthanisation Plan… And you will NOT get in my way, Lazarus. Not you, Michael, or Erwin Smith!"
