AmeViet: Sweet Stress Relief
Alfred yawned, before rolling his shoulders, his hands still in his pockets. Thank goodness it was the weekend. Things had been stressful at work, and he was grateful to have two days for himself.
Just before he reached his apartment he stopped, a familiar, sweet smell stopping him in his tracks. He looked towards his neighbour's door, and he grinned. Abandoning all thoughts of going to his own apartment to relax, he excitedly knocked on Lien's door.
The Vietnamese woman opened soon enough, and she cocked a brow when she realised that it was Alfred.
"Stressed?" he asked.
"You have the nose of a bloodhound," she said, widening the door to let him in.
The American accepted the invitation, and he breathed deeply. Cookies. And were those cupcakes?
"Help yourself," Lien said dismissively.
America sat down and started eating the cupcakes that had already received the icing treatment. It would seem that Lien had been busy with that when he knocked.
It was an agreement that the two had reached a few months ago. Whenever Lien was stressed, she tended to bake. However, she wasn't particularly fond of sweets. Alfred, on the other hand, loved sweet food. It also helped that he was a bit of a stress eater. So, Lien would bake and Alfred would eat them. It worked out for both of them.
However, seeing how much she was baking, Alfred couldn't help but feel concerned about her. Swallowing a mouthful, he decided to get to the bottom of things.
"What's wrong?" he asked. "Work getting you down?"
"No," Lien said softly. "I found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me, and he decided to stay with the other woman because she's pregnant."
Alfred winced.
"That's bad," he said. "And here I was stressed about work. But hey, if you ever need someone to talk to, you can just come to me."
Lien rolled her eyes, but there was a smile on her face.
"And I suppose you'd want whatever I baked?" she teased.
"Well, that would help," Alfred said, chuckling. "Seriously, sometimes I think you'd make an awesome wife."
Lien tensed, and Alfred realised what he said as he noticed her cheeks turn red. Before he could apologise, she cleared her throat.
"Thank you," she said.
Alfred didn't respond, instead opting to take a large bite of his cupcake. Why did he say that?!
The prompt is: 'Character A is a stress baker and character B has a sweet tooth. They live next door to one another. It works out well. Bonus points if character A doesn't even like sweets.'
The first nation that I could think of with a sweet tooth was America, and since I've been stressing for months about what to do with AmeViet, I decided to use this prompt with this pairing.
