Chapter 3: Magic Knights From Another World
Once Mario and his friends woke up Julius asked them to follow him somewhere. The group found themselves in an arena.
"What is this place?"
Mario asked.
"This is the arena where we hold the Magic Knight Exams."
Julius answered.
"You mean the mages working for you?"
Luigi asked.
"Yes, but I wouldn't phrase it like that. The Magic Knights serve all of Clover Kingdom, not just me. I may be giving them missions, but they also have the authority to act independently as needed."
"I see, and why are we here?"
Peach asked.
"Since you all will be staying with us until you find your friends and the powerful artifacts they might have, I thought it best to join one of the Magic Knight Squads. If you do, then no one will be suspicious of you four searching the lands on your quest. Plus, you might find something to help during one of the missions."
"Oh, we have to do missions as well?"
Daisy asked.
"Of course, you will be a magic knight after all. And since we're helping you by offering you a place to stay, would it be fair to help us as well?
Julius explained.
"Okay. Sounds fair. So, now what? We're the only ones here."
Mario said.
"Ah, don't worry about that. I've already informed the captains and they should be here soon. On another note, how long until Rosalina arrives?"
As soon as Julius finished his question, a beam of light shot down in front of the group. It dissipated to reveal Rosalina's astral projection with a large chest.
"Hello everyone, sorry I'm late. It took a little longer to get everything ready."
"It's okay, Rosalina."
Peach said. Rosalina opened the chest and twenty Power Stars came out. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy received five each. As they absorbed the Power Stars into their grimoires, four bags came out of the chest and flew toward Mario and his friends. The lights took shape and the four heroes had wide grins.
"Cappy!"
Mario said as a white top hat with eyes and a ghostly body hugged Mario.
"It's-a good to see you again!"
"It's good to see you too Mario! Thank goodness you and the others are okay."
While this was happening, Luigi had a ghost dog in his arms that was licking his face happily. Luigi hugged the dog while a sparkling ribbon circled Peach until it took a humanoid form.
"Stella!"
"Hello Peach! It's great to see you again."
"Yeah, I just wish it was under better circumstances."
"That's why we're here. Rosalina asked us to help you guys out!"
"Glad to have your aid, Stella."
With Daisy, a bright yellow orb was floating next to her.
"Yello! Hello! I'm Starlow! And Rosalina has assigned me to be your partner Daisy!"
"Nice!"
"Oh yeah! Rosalina gave us some equipment to give you four."
Cappy said. He then pulled out a bag and gave each bright blue suit and scarf to Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Daisy.
"Wait, isn't this my super suit and attack scarf?"
Mario asked.
"Yep, Rosalina made copies for each of you. She said you would need all the help you can get since you're not at full strength."
"Indeed I did. I underestimated the power of the devil Bowser had captured, and it led to this. That's why I don't want to take any chances. Also, here, a Cobalt Star and some modifications to your magic."
Rosalina said while twirling her wand. The grimoires of Mario and his friends began to glow with new power.
"Now, while your magic gives you access to all your power-ups, I've tweaked them a bit to differentiate you all and give you a better chance at success. Mario, I've given you (Potential Awakening). It gives you the ability to maximize the power of any 'spell' or equipment you use. You'll need maximum focus to achieve this."
Mario nodded at Rosalina's explanation and created a fireball in his hand. He then focused on it to activate the new skill he received. The fireball got bigger and glowed bright red. Suddenly it shrank to the size of a marble and was a bright blue. Though small, Julius could feel the power in that fireball. If Mario were to unleash it right now, it would undoubtedly destroy most, if not all, of the Clover Kingdom. Luckily Mario was able to dissipate it harmlessly, but it was still impressive.
"Good, now Luigi, you have received (Spectral Awakening). It activates with max focus just like Mario's skill, but works differently. Instead of maximizing the power of your spells, it directly attacks the soul."
"Wow. How does that work?"
Luigi asked while looking at his hand.
"Here, try it on me, bro. Don't-a hold back."
Mario braced himself for Luigi's attack. Luigi created a green fireball in his hand and focused on it. It took on an eerie glow and was thrown at Mario. The fireball vanished as soon as it hit Mario. It looked like it didn't do anything, but Mario's expression said otherwise.
"How odd."
"What's up, Mario?"
"It's your attack, Luigi. It hit me, but I didn't feel any pain."
"So it was a dud then?"
"No, Daisy. I didn't feel any pain but weakened instead. It's as if the fireball burned away some of my stamina."
"How fascinating. With that kind of power, it doesn't matter how tough your opponent is. Enough of those attacks will leave them unable to attack."
Julius said with Rosalina nodding in agreement.
"Cool."
Luigi admired his new power while Rosalina continued her explanation with Peach.
"Peach, I gave you (Armament Change). This skill works with Stella and should be very familiar."
"Oh, so it's the costume changes then?"
"Yes, but now you will be able to combine them with your power-ups for powerful new combos. Plus, you may be able to make new costumes based on what you learn from these Magic Knights."
"I see. I will keep an eye out then."
Rosalina smiled at this and turned to Daisy.
"And as for you, Daisy, I have observed this world and learned of a type of magic known as Beast Magic. It allows its user to mimic the power of animals by recreating their body parts and attributes with magic."
"Let me guess, I have the same thing?"
"In a way. Instead of recreating animals, you'll become them."
"What?"
"Try it out. Use the catsuit power-up."
Daisy did that and was covered in an orange glow. When the glow dissipated, Daisy was now an anthropomorphic cat person.
"Whoa. This is cool!"
"Yes. Now you have better cat-like reflexes than what the cat-suit would normally give you."
Daisy tried it out and was faster, more agile, and could climb walls faster than normal. She was even able to change the directions of her dives twice while airborne.
"Nice! Thank you!"
Daisy said as she turned back to normal.
"You're welcome. Now in addition to your standard transformations, I have given you the rest of the animal kingdom, including some special ones from other lands."
"Other lands?"
"Yes, lands that belong to allies you know well."
Rosalina said with a wink. Daisy thought about this and realized what she was talking about.
"I see. Thanks."
"Glad you like it. Oh, and before I forget, I've also added three mystical beasts to your grimoire. They require a lot of power so use those transformations when needed."
"Okay, what are they?"
"They are the Immortal Phoenix, the Mystical Nine-Tailed Fox, and finally, the Powerful Wolf Fenrir."
"Cool!"
"I hope the powers and items I've granted you four serve you well. Now then, Julius, you wanted to speak to me?"
"Actually, I wanted you to speak to our captains in a meeting I've set up. Oh, it looks like they have arrived."
Everyone turned to the entrance Julius was looking at and saw nine individuals walking in.
"Allow me the introduce the Magic Knight Captains. Nine of the strongest mages in our kingdom, and leaders of the magic knight squads. First is William Vangeance, captain of the Golden Dawn, our top-ranking squad."
"A pleasure to meet you."
William said to Mario and his friends. William was a man of average height and a slim build. He wore a golden cloak and a strange mask. He spoke in a gentle and calm tone. Mario and his friends waved back with a smile.
"Good. Next, Fuegoleon Vermillion, captain of the Crimson Lion Kings."
"Hello."
Fuegoleon was a tall man with long, vermillion hair and a serious expression. He spoke in an authoritative, but fair tone.
"Next, the captain of the Silver Eagles, Nozel Silva."
"I'm assuming these strangers are the reason you called us sir?"
Nozel said, eyeing Mario and the others with suspicion. He was a tall man with silver hair, piercing eyes, and an 'interesting' hairstyle that Mario and his friends noticed.
"That's a unique hairstyle."
Peach commented.
"I know. How do you think he gets it that way?"
Mario asked.
"Maybe he does it himself?"
Luigi guessed.
"He's a captain, right? He might have a personal hairdresser."
Daisy said, eliciting laughs from Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Nozel was annoyed by this and wanted to punish these strangers for mocking him. But he noticed how Julius was so friendly with them and assumed they must be important guests. So he held himself back, for now.
"Right, continuing the introductions, our next captain is Charlotte Roselei, captain of the Blue Rose Knights."
"It's good to see you well sir. May I ask who these strangers are?"
Charlotte was a woman of average height dressed in steel armor and a blue cape. She had blonde hair, from what Mario could see since she also wore a steel helmet covering most of it.
"Soon Charlotte. Next, is Jack, Captain of the Green Praying Mantises."
"Ke ke ke, I must say, I was quite surprised when we were all called so suddenly. I assumed there was a big battle about to happen."
Jack said. He was a tall and lanky man with loose medium-length black hair. He also had a scar on the left side of his face that ran down from his eye to his mouth.
"No, not yet at least. But I did call you all here for something important. Now then, the next captain is Gueldre Poizot, captain of the Purple Orcas."
"Hello there."
Guildre said with a chuckle. He was a tall and obese man with short blonde hair and was wearing a strange mask.
"Next, captain of the Aqua Deer, Rill Boismortier."
"Hi, nice to meet you!"
Rill said. Rill was the youngest of the group. He was a young man with loose and spikey aqua-blue hair. He had a wide smile while waving at Mario and his friends.
"Good to see you're as chipper as ever Rill. Next, captain of the Coral Peacocks, Dorothy Unsworth."
Dorothy was a small woman dressed in a pink witch hat and cloak with flowers adorning the base of her hat. Mario and his friends observed something strange about her.
"Um, is she asleep?"
Mario asked Julius.
"Yes, Mario. She sleeps a lot, and even walks and attends meetings while sleeping."
"Isn't that bad?"
"It may seem like that, but that's how her magic works. Her magic is dream magic and her sleeping helps power her magic."
"Oh. So kind of like the Pi'illo People."
"Who?"
"Oh, people from our world who have power over dreams."
"Whoa, how amazing! Would you mind telling me more about them?"
Julius asked with stars in his eyes.
"Later. Don't you have one more person to introduce?"
"Right, sorry about that. And finally, captain of the Black Bulls, Yami Sukehiro."
"Hmm, so you're the weirdos Asta was telling me about."
Yami said. Yami was a tall buff man with medium black hair that was messily combed back. He wore a black cloak over his right shoulder and wore a white tank top with black boots and brown pants. He was also smoking a cigarette and let out a puff of smoke.
"I see you've heard of them Yami. Now then, something amazing and terrible has happened. Our new friends here are connected to it."
Julius said motioning to Mario and the others. The captains examined them, but what caught their attention was Rosalina, since she was using an astral projection to communicate with them.
"Okay, and what would that be and how are they tied to it?"
Yami asked. Rosalina floated forward.
"Allow me to explain."
Rosalina then proceeded to explain the situation Mario and his friends were in and how they got there. She also explained the danger Bowser posed as well as the Power Stars he may possess. She also made sure to mention that Bowser had many dangerous artifacts that may have spread over the kingdoms when he was teleported here. The captains were speechless upon hearing this. They were expecting this to be some kind of joke and Julius to start laughing, but he just stood there with his usual smile.
"So, as you can see, this is a matter of utmost importance. But the problem is we do not know where their friends, enemies, and artifacts are. According to Rosalina, they could be anywhere within the four kingdoms. That is why we are going to need the help of these four. As such, I thought it would be best if they joined the Magic Knights."
Julius explained.
"Is that wise sir?"
Nozel asked.
"Even if you believe it, I'm sorry to say I find their story unbelievable. Without a proper demonstration of their capabilities, I refuse even to entertain the idea of letting these foreigners into my squad."
Nozel's attitude got on the Star Children's nerves.
"So, you want a demonstration? Fine then. Let's have a spar. You and me, let's-a go."
Mario said. Nozel glared at him, offended by Mario's challenge.
"I think that is a great idea. This could be considered an impromptu exam for the Magic Knights. So why not? Marx, can you call Cob?"
"Yes sir."
Marx pulled out a magic communication device from his pocket.
"Cob, come in."
The device projected a small hologram of a man with fluffy hair.
"Yes, I indeedy do."
"We need your services. Please come to the coliseum where the Magic Knight Exams are held."
"Yes, right away."
Marx closed the device and a door appeared out of nowhere. It opened and the man from the device came through.
"Hello there everyone. How can I be of service."
"Thank you for answering on such short notice. We need you to take us to the fields for a quick spar."
"Yes, right away sir."
Cob created another door that opened to reveal a portal.
"Right! Yes, of course! Right this way everyone. Please watch your step."
They all walked into the door and found themselves in a large field outside of the kingdom.
"Here we are. You two can go all out now."
Julius said while Mario and Nozel took their place. Everyone else stood at the side to watch.
"This shouldn't take long."
Nozel arrogantly said.
"What a jerk. Beat him black and blue Mario!"
"Go, bro!"
"Don't hurt him too badly now!"
Daisy, Luigi, and Peach said. On the other hand, the other captains just watched in silence, but did comment on their cheering.
"They seem confident in their friend. I don't share their sentiments. I can't sense much magic from them, and I don't quite believe their story."
Charlotte commented.
"Whoa, that's kind of harsh, don't you think?"
Rill said.
"Harsh as it may be, I do agree with her to some extent. While I don't sense any magic coming from them, there has to be a reason the Wizard King is so confident in their abilities."
Fuegoleon said. Everyone else mirrored his sentiment, wondering why the Wizard King was so impressed by these four children. Does he truly believe their outlandish story?
"It's weird."
Yami commented.
"What is, Yami?"
Jack asked.
"Those four. From what my squad told me, they should be bursting with magical power, but I can't sense anything."
"Ke ke, maybe they were lying, or were fooled? Can't expect much from your squad."
"What was that beanpole? You dissing my squad?"
"Remind me, who has negative stars again?"
Yami grunted and turned back to the fight.
"We'll turn that around this year. Just wait and see."
"Yeah, whatever you say."
Everyone watched as Mario got ready to fight Nozel.
"Alright, now, begin!"
Nozel raised his arms as his grimoire glowed.
"I'll end this farce now! Mercury Magic: Rain of Silver!"
Globs of mercury began to rain down on Mario. He dodged and danced around each drop while approaching Nozel. Once he was close enough, Mario used an overhead punch to knock out Nozel. But Nozel managed to dodge the attack and put space between them. Everyone noticed the large crater left behind by Mario's attack.
"That's some impressive strength and agility he has."
Yami said while letting out a whistle of admiration.
"True, but too bad it's pointless. It doesn't matter how physically strong you are if you don't have magic."
Rill commented.
"True. In this world, magic is everything. I don't see why Nozel hasn't ended this fight yet. It isn't like him to prolong fights unnecessarily."
Charlotte said.
"I wouldn't count red cap out yet. If you all remember, I have a magicless brat in my squad. And he defeated a mage that even the four-leaf mage of the Golden Dawn could beat."
Yami commented.
"What!? Surely you jest Yami."
Guildre said.
"No, he's right."
William said.
"My squad told me all about it. And their meeting with Mario and his friends. I do not believe they would lie. Which is why I am also confused. How come we're not sensing any magic power from them."
"Yes, and why hasn't Mario used his grimoire?"
Fuegoleon asked, noting that Mario was only using physical attacks.
"Maybe it's a show of force or superiority. A way to say he doesn't need magic to beat us."
William guessed.
"Is that so? Ke ke ke. Well, I would love to have a tussle with one of them myself if that's the case."
Jack commented. Everyone continued to watch the battle as craters and liquid mercury were scattered around the field. They noticed that Nozel was breathing heavily while Mario appeared to be fine.
"I will admit, I wasn't expecting you to be this evasive. You have avoided every attack I threw at you."
Nozel said in between breaths.
"Eh, it's nothing. I've dodged many faster and stronger attacks than this. Though I've never faced anyone who used liquid mercury to attack before."
Mario commented.
"I see. No matter, the fight is over now."
Mario was confused by Nozel when his book glowed again.
"Mercury Magic: Silver Star of Execution!"
The mercury dotted across the field came together and formed into a spherical cage.
"This is my strongest technique. I must commend you for forcing me to use it."
Mario tried to jump through one of the large holes, but when he got close, tendrils of silver came from the cage and tried to grab him. Mario was forced to turn and run from these tendrils.
"Mamamia, you have full control over this cage."
"That's right. Now that you are in it, you have no chance of escape or victory. Surrender! The winner of our bout is obvious!"
Mario stopped moving and let the tendrils wrap around his legs.
"So, do you yield?"
"I do not."
Mario responded. He crouched down and looked up at Nozel.
"Let's-a go."
He quietly said before jumping with his incredible strength. The force of the jump was so strong that it blew away the tendrils and any liquid mercury near him. The captains had to shield themselves from the winds his jump created. Mario continued flying towards Nozel who threw up silver shields to protect himself. But it was for not as Mario busted through them and landed a devasting punch into Nozel's gut. Before he could do anything, Mario threw him to the ground and chased him down. They both hit the ground with Mario stomping on Nozel and creating a dust cloud. When the dust settled, everyone saw Mario standing over an unconscious Nozel.
"Whoo! Way to go Mario!"
Luigi cheered with Peach and Daisy mirroring his sentiments. The captains just stood there dumbfounded that Nozel was defeated through brute strength alone.
"Unbelievable."
"He defeated him without using any magic."
Charlotte and Rill commented.
"Damn, I guess we were wrong about them. Now their story doesn't seem so unbelievable."
Yami commented while laughing.
"Glad you all accept their story. Now, onto the main topic. Which squad will they be going to?"
Julius said. The captains thought about this and approached the Mushroom Kingdom heroes while Peach was healing Nozel. Nozel woke up to see he was in a crater.
"What, how? I lost."
Nozel said with bitterness in his voice. Mario held out his hand to help him up, but Nozel ignored it and picked himself up. Soon the captains had gathered and began discussing which squad they should be in.
"There's four of them, why don't we have one join a separate squad each?"
Guildre suggested.
"Do they want that? What if they want to stay together?"
Charlotte asked.
"Should we allow that? To have one squad horde all four of them?"
Nozel asked.
"Do you want to be the one to tell them they can't?"
Fuegoleon asked. Nozel grunted and stayed silent. That's when Julius spoke up.
"I have a suggestion. Why don't we have them spend some time with each squad? See which group they want to stay in."
Everyone nodded at that suggestion.
"Okay, so, which squad do you want to stay with first?"
Julius asked. Mario and his friends thought about this.
"Well, since they are the top-ranked squad, we'll stay with the Golden Dawn first."
William smiled.
"Well then, let's go, shall we? I'm sure you'll find our base quite relaxing."
The group began to walk towards Cob's portal door until Yami spoke up.
"Hold up! What's up with you four? My magicless brat told me you had amazing magic power, but I sense no magic from you. So what's up with that?"
"Magicless? Hmm, oh! You mean Asta?"
Mario asked.
"Yeah, now how come you don't have that overwhelming magic power?"
"About that, Julius gave us these rings to hide our magic power. So we don't become targets for spies from the Diamond or Spade Kingdoms."
Mario explained while showing the ring on his finger. Luigi, Peach, and Daisy doing the same thing.
"Oh, that would explain it. Do you mind taking it off? I want to see if what my brats said is true."
Yami asked. Mario thought about this and shrugged.
"Okie dokie. Just try not to be too surprised."
Mario took off his ring and his magic could be felt by all the captains. All the captains froze in place after feeling his magic power.
"Holy!? This power is unreal."
Yami said with a shocked expression.
"He had this much power and didn't even use it in our fight? Just what are his spells capable of?"
Nozel asked. Mario noticed the looks on the captains' faces as well as their heavy breathing and put his ring back on. Once he did, the captains started to breathe normally again.
"So, does that satisfy your curiosity?"
Mario asked.
"Yeah, damn. That was intense. I wonder how my brats were able to withstand that pressure."
Yami answered.
"Yeah, about that, Julius has taught us how to use our new mana and we have made leaps and bounds with mana control."
Daisy answered.
"Well, that explains it. I don't think our younger squad members would be able to handle that much pressure."
William said.
"Yeah. After Julius felt our new power, he suggested these rings so we could blend in with the rest of the people here."
Luigi said while rubbing the back of his head.
"Man, to think we have four new members that are stronger than the captains. Maybe you should make your own squad."
Rill suggested.
"Maybe if we were to stay here? But since we will be leaving once we gather our friends and take care of Bowser, we shouldn't since we won't be here forever."
Peach explained.
"Still, it will be weird to have squad members who are stronger than the captains."
Charlotte commented.
"Oh, don't worry about that. We have an idea to make you all stronger."
"And what would that be Peach?"
Julius asked.
"We'll explain later, once we have met the rest of the squads."
Mario said as they all walked through the portal.
And that's the end of the chapter. Thank you all so much for reading, and feel free to leave a review. Thank you once again, and have a nice day.
