Kendall is back at the edge of the Hudson, sitting silently on a bench, listening to the sound of the water. Colin is in his peripheral vision. If he tries to jump, the bodyguard will pull him right back.
He's never felt as trapped as he does now. He could walk forever and never outrun what he's done.
He's lost everything. Father, brother, sister, business, wife, kids. Any semblance of decency that allowed him to believe that he was a good person deep down.
He had hurt Roman. Had lashed out at his pregnant sister. Had denied his role in the boy's death.
A tear slides down his face, followed by another. What kind of monster is he, he wonders. His family will never speak to him again and it's no more than he deserves.
Roman had taunted him about his kids, he reminds himself. He had claimed that his niece and nephew weren't real. He's no innocent. But then he remembers Roman dabbing at his bleeding wounds with a tissue, the wounds Kendall had as good as inflicted, after saying We're bullshit. It's all nothing. Maybe he was right.
He really doesn't have any reason to go on this time.
Calmly, wiping his tears away, still ignoring Colin, he gets up. He'll do it at home. No dramatic jump, nothing he can be rescued from.
He's starting to walk away from the river, contemplating the best way to end it all without traumatising his kids too much, when his phone buzzes. He pulls it out numbly, expecting a message from Stewy, or maybe Frank, expressing commiserations for the end of his fucking life's work.
The message is from Roman. It starts with Fuck the company, followed by something about Gerri, a cocktail bar, and a circle jerk.
For a moment Kendall just stares at the message, like it's some kind of code. Then relief starts to flood him, spreading through him like a drug. Roman is being typically crude. Roman possibly doesn't hate him. Then Roman drops a pin, inviting Kendall to whatever cocktail bar he's at.
Kendall almost laughs out loud. He hasn't lost everything after all.
Fuck you, he replies, letting Roman sweat for a moment before adding I'm on my way.
He can still feel Colin trailing behind him as he follows the map on his phone to the cocktail bar. He wipes the remaining tears from his face and keeps on walking.
