Chapter 18: Enemies of the Heir
Hey everyone I'm back with a new chapter. Wow that last one really got your attention. Well lucky for you I put quite a few moments in this chapter that will make it interesting. I hope you like what I have planned. Please Review and Enjoy.
October had come to Hogwarts and it was late at night as Harry was in Lockhart's office. As part of his detention, he and Ron were doing a series of tasks while Ron was polishing all the awards with Filch in the trophy room Harry had to sit with Lockhart and help answer is fanmail.
I think Ron got the better one.
"Harry, Harry, Harry can you possibly think of a better way to serve detention than this?" Lockhart asks.
"Not really." Harry said.
"Fame is a fickle thing Harry. Celebrity is as celebrity does remember that." Lockhart said.
"Yes sir." Harry said.
"I blame myself for what you did Harry. I gave you a taste of fame at Flourish and Blotts and I got you hooked. I know you want to be an amazing wizard like me Harry but keep in mind you're still young. You have plenty of time to become famous. You might not believe this but when I was a student no one even knew my name. Now look at me." Lockhart said.
"Yes sir." Harry said as he continued writing when he heard a strange noise.
"Come…come to me." It hisses.
"What?" Harry asks.
"Sorry?" Lockhart asks.
"I heard a voice." Harry said.
"What voice?" Lockhart asks.
"Didn't hear it?" Harry asks.
"Perhaps you're getting a little drowsy Harry and great scott no wonder look at the time. We've been here for nearly 4 hours. Spooky how time flies when you're having fun." Lockhart chuckles. "I think we've done enough for today Harry. Go back and get some rest."
"Thank you sir." Harry said getting up.
As he walked back to his common room he was curious where that strange voice came from.
Weeks past and soon it was Halloween day, in the Great Hall Sam was sitting down eating breakfast when Malfoy walks by shoving him.
"Hey!" Sam said turning around.
"Oh don't mind me, I'm just off to Quidditch practice. Gotta get ready for when I wipe the floor with Potter and humiliate Gryffindor. You know be a real Slytherin." Malfoy smirks.
"Harry will crush you and let me tell you no amount of money in the world will stop you from being a laughing stock. I just pray I'm there when it happens." Sam said.
"Keep telling yourself that." Malfoy said walking away.
Growling Sam turns to his breakfast. "What I wouldn't shove that expensive broomstick of his right up his—"
"Whoa what's going on here?" Sam looks to see Skye and Orion walking over.
"Malfoy is what's going on." Sam said.
"It's not fair what he did, you should have gotten that spot." Skye said.
"Oh really? Tell me how's his flying?" Sam asks.
"Barely more than standard ordinary fair." Orion said.
"And yet Flint picked him because we all have new brooms now." Skye said.
"Sometimes I hate this house." Sam sighs.
"Don't worry man things will get better." Orion said clapping him on his shoulder before they walked away to Quidditch practice and as much as Sam hated to admit it. He wanted to be the one ready to face Harry as a Seeker.
If he was in any other House he might have made the team, but he was a Slytherin, a house filled with people like Malfoy who thought they could do whatever they want and no one would do anything about it.
And while a few started to look his way he was still considered a joke by most of the house.
Sighing Sam suddenly heard the hooting of owls and saw the mail fly in smiling Sam's spirit went up as Noctis landed in front of him with a letter from home.
"Thanks buddy." Sam said taking the letter and giving Noctis a snack before opening the letter.
Dear Sam,
Happy Halloween! Things at the orphanage have become very magical this year no pun intended. Thanks to Newt, Eric and Cole are learning so much. They're like his little Magical Creature assistants now. I must say these boys are better at their magic homework than their regular homework. Now that they finally have a link to your world they're doing everything they can to be a part of it. I can't believe they let an arrogant brat buy his way onto the team and ignore you. I know you're probably angry but I want you to remember I taught you kids to never lower yourselves to dirty tricks to get what you want. I want you to know that even if some of your classmates make fun of you, you'll always be our favorite wizard.
Keep being amazing,
Love Martha
Smiling Sam felt a million times better hearing the good news when suddenly a second owl flew in and dropped a note in front of him.
Curious Sam picks it up to see his name on it.
"Meet me in front of the Great Hall Tonight during the Halloween Feast for our lesson. I wouldn't recommend eating before this." Sam read as he looked up to see Snape looking at him from the teacher's table.
Nodding his head, Sam signaled he understood.
Getting up Sam made his way out, but when he did he saw Penny at the door and they almost walked into each other.
"Whoa." They both said.
"Uh sorry Sam." Penny said.
"My bad Penny, I was in a bit of a rush. Sorry." Sam apologizes.
Ever since Sam gave her that kiss, Penny had been a little nervous around him which Bea just loved.
"Ooh Penny and Sam sitting in a tree." Penny and Sam turn to see Bea nearby making air kisses.
"Grr Beatrice!" Penny said as Bea laughs running off as her sister chased after her.
"Well at least Bea's no longer nervous." Sam shrugs.
Soon Halloween came and Sam was with Prof. Snape in an empty room with a large platform to stand on for their lesson.
"What's this?" Sam asks.
"The Dueling Club. Once Hogwarts used to let students practice their dueling skills on one another but was forced to shut down for a while. Perfect place for our lesson." Snape said walking to one side while Sam walked to the other side. "Tell me what sort of dueling spells do you know?"
"Uh I know Flipendo, Rictusempra, Incendio and a few others." Sam said.
"Hmm mostly sneaky and offensive." Snape said.
"Excuse me?" Sam asks.
"Dueling Spells can often be sorted into three categories: Sneaky, Offensive and Defensive. You have been able to mostly rely on the first two because you've always been on the attacking end, but you won't always have that luxury. Sometimes an opponent will have that luxury and when they do you must be ready to defend yourself." Snape said drawing his wand. "Draw your wand."
Reaching to his hip Sam pulls out his wand.
"Now attack me." Snape said.
"Are you sure?" Sam asks.
"This is my lesson isn't it?" Snape asks.
Sam narrows his eyes before flicking his wand. "Flipendo!"
"Protego!" Snape creates a barrier around him which blocks the attack and sends it right back at Sam knocking him to the ground in pain.
"Ugh what was that?" Sam groans.
"Protego, the Shielding Charm. A very powerful defensive spell." Snape said as Sam was slow to get up.
"No kidding." Sam said.
"Now for this lesson I will attempt to attack you with my spells and you will try and use this spell to repel them." Snape said.
"Alright." Sam nods.
"Now watch me." Snape said doing the wand motions. "Now you."
Sam did a few practice motions.
"Now, here I come! Stupefy!" Snape said firing a blast of magic at him.
"Protego!" Sam said trying to wave his wand but he messed up and was knocked back.
"Don't put too much effort into your waving. Be calm, quick, precise." Snape said firing more attacks at Sam who ducked the first one and raised his wand.
"Protego!" Sam said blocking more of the next one but it still got through and the last one blasted him making him hit the platform again.
"You're hesitating! Even the slightest hesitation in words can render a spell completely useless." Snape said.
Groaning Sam slowly gets up panting heavily. "You attacked me way too fast that time." Sam said.
"I warned you I wouldn't go easy on you. Don't tell me you're all talk. I thought you wanted to change the Slytherin House because let me tell you no Slytherin will follow a weakling." Snape said.
"I'm not weak." Sam growls gripping his wand.
"Then prove it. Fend off my attacks." Snape said readying his wand. "Expelliarmus!"
"Protego!" Sam said creating a full barrier this time sending the spell back knocking Snape's wand out of his hand.
Pausing Sam looks to Snape in shock. "I-I did it?"
"It seems you're not completely helpless." Snape said picking up his wand. "Again.
For the next half hour, Snape fired spell after spell at Sam who did his best counter them.
By the end, Sam was sitting down totally exhausted from practice when Snape walks over.
"Here drink this." Snape said handing Sam a goblet of water which he takes and gulps down.
"I have had two different Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher, but you're the first one that wore me out." Sam said.
"Most teachers would rather just talk or make you read about dangers. I believe actions speak louder than words." Snape said.
"That's why you came at me like that. Because if this was a real duel against something bad, they wouldn't hold back against me, so you didn't." Sam realized.
"I taught you exactly what Defense Against the Dark Arts is supposed to do, prepare you for the dangers of the outside world." Snape nods.
"Wow, and I thought you were amazing as a Potions Teacher. You're really good." Sam smiles.
"That's why I want the job, sadly if I took it Dumbledore would have to find a new Potions Master and finding one of those isn't easy." Snape said sitting next to him.
"Well you're not easy to replace." Sam said finishing his water. "I'll admit, as painful as it was being knocked around. You really helped me learn a lot. Think we can do this again sometime?"
"We'll see. In the meantime, it's getting late why don't you go back to the Common Room and get some rest." Snape suggests.
"Thanks dad." Sam said before he and Snape pause realizing what he just said.
Sam was about to open his mouth to say something when they heard tons of muttering and footsteps outside.
"I'll kill ya! I'LL KILL YA!" Flich's voice echoed throughout the halls.
"That was Filch." Sam said.
"What is that man whining about now?" Snape asks as they both ran out.
Making their way down the hall, they arrive to see many of the students and all the staff looking at a hall filled with puddles and in the middle was Filtch about to strangle Harry while his cat Mrs. Norris was hanging by a torch and Ron and Hermione were nearby.
"What's going on?" Sam asks when he noticed writing on the walls in blood.
THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE
"Argus stop!" Dumbledore said getting everyone's attention. "Will all students please return to their common rooms."
As Sam looked up at the wall, Malfoy walks up to him.
"Take a good look Samuel, I only wish you were a Mudblood too." Malfoy said before walking away.
Turning his friends Sam walks up to them. "Guys what happened?"
"We were joining Nearly Headless Nick for his Deathday party." Hermione said.
"Which by the way no living creature should ever go to." Ron interrupts.
"Ron!" Hermione snaps.
"Sorry." Ron said.
"Then we were walking back to the Common Room when we found Mrs. Norris like this." Hermione said.
"Well then it appears young Potter and his friends were just in the wrong place at the wrong time." Snape said.
"He did it! I know he killed my cat!" Filch said.
"No I didn't. Ask any of the ghosts they'll vouch for me." Harry said.
"Calm yourself Argus, she's not dead. Only petrified." Dumbledore said as Lockhart walked up to the cat.
"Ah I thought so. So unlucky I wasn't there." Lockhart said.
"I understand Prof. Sprout has managed to acquire some Mandrakes. As soon as they are matured a potion can be made that revive Mrs. Norris." Dumbledore said.
"I'll make it. I can whip up a Mandrake Restorative Draught in my sleep." Lockhart said when Sam got in between him.
"Uh sir with all due respect, I think we should leave this Potion to the school's Potion Master." Sam said.
Snape was surprised by this but strangly enjoyed this. "Agreed, this is my area of expertise Professor. We can't take any chances." Snape said.
Looking over at them, Dumbledore smirks.
"Hmm very well." Lockhart said.
"Why don't you four go off to bed while we take care of things." Dumbledore said as Sam, Harry, Ron and Hermione left. "Severus come with me."
"So is that really all that happened?" Sam asks.
"Not everything, Sam can you keep a secret?" Harry asks as Sam nods. "I heard a voice, saying it was going to kill, but Ron and Hermione didn't hear it."
"Say what?" Sam asks confused.
"I'm telling the truth, and then as we arrived we saw some spiders leaving through the window." Harry said.
"Ugh it's the Stone all over again." Sam sighs.
"Sam something's going on and I could really use another friend to help me." Harry said.
"Alright buddy. I'll help." Sam said as they went their separate ways.
In the Headmaster's office, Dumbledore sat down with Snape in front of him.
"Well that was interesting. Not a troll in the girl's bathroom interesting but still quite surprising." Dumbledore chuckles.
"Do you think it's really open?" Snape asks.
"I can't say just yet Severus, but we must be careful. Also I noticed you and Sam weren't at dinner today. Where were you both?" Dumbledore asks.
"He was with me. I was giving him a lesson. It was going well but at the end he…" Snape pauses.
"He what?" Dumbledore asks.
"He…called me dad." Snape admits.
"I see. What did you do when he called you that?" Dumbledore asks.
"Nothing, before I could say anything we heard Filch and ran out." Snape said.
"But you didn't hate it, did you?" Dumbledore asks.
Snape pauses before sighing. "No, I didn't and on this day of all days."
"Halloween certainly hasn't been your favorite day Severus, not since the incident." Dumbledore recalls.
"But then he just says that word." Snape said.
"I think you would make a fine father to young Samuel. You both certainly have an interesting relationship as it is." Dumbledore smiles.
"I'm leaving. I have to make sure that mess actually gets cleaned up." Snape said walking away.
"All these years of thinking you would never love again and then you found someone." Dumbledore said.
A few days later, in Transfiguration class, the Gryffindor and Slytherins were watching McGonagall.
"Alright class today we will be turning animals into water goblets." McGonagall said causing Noctis to shudder at the thought.
"Don't worry buddy, it won't be permanent I promise." Sam assures calming his owl down.
"Now class watch me." McGonagall said tapping her wand turning her bird into a glass goblet amazing the class. "Now who would like to go first? Uh Mr. Weasley." She points.
"Uh." Ron cringed as he pointed his wand at Scabbers. Waving his wand he tried to change Scabbers but he ended up becoming a very hairy water goblet and we could still see his tail causing the class to laugh.
"I would not want to drink out of that glass." Barnaby said.
"Nope." Sam cringed.
"That wand needs replacing." McGonagall said causing Ron to sigh humiliated.
Suddenly Hermione raised her hand getting her attention.
"Yes Ms. Granger?" She asks.
"Professor, I was wondering…could you tell us about the Chamber of Secrets?" Hermione asks getting everyone's attention.
McGonagall pauses before coming to an answer. "Very well since you all saw it. Many of you know that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. For years the founders worked together in perfect harmony until one of them broke apart."
"Three guesses who." Ron mumbles.
"You see Salazar Slytherin wished to be more selective with the students. He believed magical learning should be kept within all magical families, mainly purebloods." McGonagall said.
"Wait, that's not right." Sam said raising his hand.
"Yes, Mr. Snape." McGonagall said as everyone turned to him.
"Uh Professor McGonagall are you sure that's the right story because I uh I heard Salazar Slytherin was a kind wizard to all." Sam said and almost instantly all the other Slytherins pointed and laughed at him.
"What stupid fairy tale did you find that in?" Malfoy mocks.
"What an idiot." Pansy Parkinson mocks.
"He really is a dumb dreamer." Crabbe and Goyle mock.
"As much as I wish what you said was true Mr. Snape it isn't. All the history books say the same thing."
Feeling embarrassed Sam sat back down.
"This issue sparked over time between Slytherin and Gryffindor until Slytherin left the school, never to return. According to legend, Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in the school, the Chamber of Secrets, but before Slytherin left the school he sealed it until his one true heir returned to the school. The heir alone would be able to unseal the chamber, unleash the horror within and use it to purge the school of all those who Slytherin thought were unworthy." McGonagall explains.
"Muggleborns." Hermione said causing her to nod.
"Naturally the school has been searched many times and no such chamber has been found." McGonagall said when Merula raised her hand.
"So what exactly is in this chamber that would allow the heir to unleash horror?" Merula asks.
"Something only the Heir of Slytherin could control, supposedly a monster." McGonagall said horrifying everyone.
After class, Sam, Barnaby, and Liz were walking with Harry, Ron and Hermione.
"I always knew Salazar Slytherin was a twisted old looney." Ron said when Sam punches his elbow. "What I say?!"
"That is not the truth. Salazar is not a monster." Sam said.
"Sam all the history books say he is." Hermione said.
"This is just like last year when you said Snape was innocent." Ron said.
"Hey I was right about that." Sam points out.
"He's got you there Ron." Harry and Barnaby said.
"Look all I'm saying is there seems to be a gap of information. They say he made this because of muggleborns but why? How did all this sneak by the others unnoticed?" Sam asks.
"Sam I get what you're saying but this isn't going on right now this happened over a thousand years ago. There's no way you can find out the truth now." Liz said.
"Who do you think the Heir could be?" Ron asks looking at the three Slytherins next to them.
"Gee Ron thanks for giving your friends the benefit of the doubt." Liz said.
"I meant do you guys know anyone in Slytherin who could be the heir?" Ron asks.
"Ron there's so many of us and almost all of them think like Malfoy it's not an easy pick." Sam said.
"Wait…what if Malfoy's the heir?" Harry guesses.
"Not a bad guess." The three Slytherins admit.
"How are we gonna figure this out though?" Ron asks when Sam broke away from the group.
"Sam where are you going?" Harry asks.
"Sorry Harry but I need to do some research." Sam said running in the direction of the Slytherin Common room.
"Why's Sam going there? The library is in that direction." Hermione said.
In the Slytherin dorms, Sam was on his bed reading all the pages of the Journal with his Peniseive nearby.
"Come on Slytherin, you couldn't have done this. You were nice to William what happened?" Sam said scanning each page for something on the Chamber of Secrets, but he soon found himself on the last page.
This is the last entry I will every right. I have failed to right the wrongs I've made and as such I must leave Hogwarts and never return. It hurts me so much to have to say goodbye to my friends and my school, but I must leave so they can keep going. One day I hope it will all go away. Should anyone find this, they must know the story they hear is not always the right story.
As Sam traced his wand against it the words started to glow.
"Not the right story." Sam gasps.
Reaching for it Sam puts the memory inside the Peneisve causing it to glow.
Taking a deep breath, Sam looks to it. "Okay Salazar, show me."
Being sucked in Sam found himself in halls of Hogwarts as Salazar walks out of a bedroom.
"To think this will be the last time I roam these halls." Salazar sighs grabbing a bag.
Walking out they saw Rowena Ravenclaw waiting for them outside.
"Your minds made up?" She asks.
"I have to do this, there's no other way." Salazar said.
"Salazar no, it wasn't your fault. Please stay." Rowena begs.
"Yes it was, and if stay no one will ever allow their children to come to Hogwarts again. You three can keep Hogwarts going. I know you can." Salazar assures.
Sniffling a tear ran down her eyes as Rowena gives Salazar a hug goodbye.
"You're the smart one Rowena, it's up to you to keep Godric and Helga in line now." Salazar said.
"I'll do my best." Rowena said as she lets go and Salazar walks through the castle.
"So Salazar wasn't their enemy, he was their friend." Sam said realizing the story was already wrong.
Following Salazar he made his way to a room right by the exit, inside a figure was laying down covered in a sheet while Godric stood in front of him.
"I always said if you did leave I wouldn't miss you, biggest lie I ever said." Godric frowns.
"I wish we could have had one more spar Godric." Salazar said.
"It would have been our tie breaker." Godric smiles softly.
"199 wins and 199 losses each." Salazar said.
"Where are your Viper Fangs?" Godric asks noticing they weren't strapped to his hip.
"I won't need them where I'm going." Salazar said.
"Salazar if you do this the name of your house will be ruined forever. Slytherin will go down as the bad house for Pure Bloods." Godric warns.
"But not forever." Salazar said confusing him. "Someday a Slytherin will look at this house and see it was not meant to be that way and whoever it is will be my Champion. They will need a strong ambition, but they will need to be brave like a Gryffindor, Loyal like a Hufflepuff and Smart like a Ravenclaw just like…" Salazar chokes.
"Just like William was." Godric finishes.
"I left clues that will lead them to the truth. May I have one last look?" Salazar asks.
Sam watches as Godric pulled back the blanket and looks in horror to see the dead body of William, but he was at least 3 years older and had Slytherin robes on.
"William." Sam said in horror as Salazar walked up to him.
"You deserved better than this William, I am truly sorry." Salazar said tearing up before he walked out.
"Salazar." Godric said holding out a hand. "Thank you for always being there, pushing me to be my best. You were my rival, my best friend and in many ways, you were like a brother to me."
"And you as well." Salazar said shaking his hand before Godric pulled him into a hug.
Walking out of the room, Salazar saw Helga waiting right by the front door.
"This school won't be the same without you." Helga said.
"Take care of yourself Helga." Salazar said as she walks up to him.
"Will I ever see you again?" Helga asks.
Salazar pauses before sighing. "No, probably not." Salazar shook his head.
"Then I won't need to live this down." Helga said grabbing Salazar and pulling him into a kiss surprising Sam.
"This certainly wasn't in the school history books." Sam said as the two of them separated.
"I wish we had more time." Salazar said.
"Me too." Helga sniffles giving him one last hug.
As Salazar walks out of the castle he looks to see the coast was clear.
Walking to a wall he pressed the stones and the opening to his secret tunnels that led to the common rooms open.
"What's he doing?" Sam asks as Salazar pulls out three objects, a music box, a tooth necklace and a small pocket notebook.
"I hope this works." Salazar said waving his wand before the three objects went down the tunnels and each one entered the other common rooms.
Making his way to the Slytherin Common room, Salazar opened the secret compartment and placed his Viper Fangs in them.
Reaching for his journal Salazar sighs.
"Someday a Champion will rise and they right the wrongs." Salazar presses his wand to his head and the sliver memory entered the journal causing Sam to gasp as Salazar closed it.
Exiting through the tunnels Salazar Slytherin left Hogwarts forever.
Zooming out Sam fell out of the memory and looked around to see he was back in his room.
"I don't believe, the story is wrong. He didn't create the Chamber." Sam said wanting to get up and tell others but if he did, he could be mocked like he was in Transfiguration. If he was gonna prove the truth he would need the whole story.
Getting up Sam grabbed the Viper Fangs and the journal, looking to the secret corridors Sam realized it.
"Those three objects, if I'm gonna find out what the Chamber of Secrets is all about I need to find them." Sam said determined.
Strong Ambition like a Slytherin, Brave like a Gryffindor, Loyal like a Hufflepuff and Smart like a Ravenclaw. These were what the Sorting Hat said to him when he was being sorted.
"Get ready Slytherin's Heir because Slytherin's Champion is here." Sam declared.
