Hi everyone! This has been an idea floating around for a while and for whatever reason I haven't been able to get it out of my head. This fanfic is starting off pretty bleak but they'll be parts with more lighthearted themes. I want to follow a one shot like format where each chapter is another moment in Lewis's life. Hopefully the execution is better than the explanation. This story will focus heavily on grief and to be honest, writing this has been therapeutic for me as I struggle with my own grief. Thank you.
Wilbur Robinson stood at the end of the casket as his father got lowered into the ground. His mother had stood next to him the entire service, sneaking swipes at her eyes and trying to hide her small sobs.Halfway through the ceremony Franny had grabbed Wilbur's hand and an hour later they still clung to each other. He stood in front of his father's body as they put him in the ground and he made no noise. He looked like a statue amongst the grievers. The day was cloudy and dry and it seemed like the entire population of Tommorowland had paid their respects to Cornelius Robinson. People who the Robinson family didn't even know had come up to them as they offered sympathy and gave them flowers. It seemed appropriate that the day that they buried the father of Tomorrowland it would be raining. Black umbrellas filled the cemetery as they lead the water to the ground.
After the service Franny gave her son one tight hug and wandered around to console her mother and father in law. The rest of the family stood in a close circle, looking solemn as they comforted Franny. Carl held onto the stroller that carried baby Eloise, who's bright blue eyes looked up at the mourning family. The city's heart ached for the baby girl who would never know her father.
Wilbur was soon met by his two closest friends, Brian a tall curly haired boy with glasses and an overbite and Samantha, a brunette girl with watery green eyes. They had both dressed up for the day and Wilbur never thought he'd see a day where Sam wore a dress and Brian wore a tie. They weren't the only ones of his friends to show up but they were the only ones he cared enough about to greet.
He gave them a small nod in recognition before stepping away from his family to stand in front of them.
"You okay?" Sam asked, giving Wilbur a sad look. She had brought tissues, offering him one which he rejected, and Wilbur noticed how red and puffy her eyes were. He hadn't even noticed her crying during the service. He had the immediate urge to comfort her. She looked up at him with such teary eyes he had to quickly look away.
"Fine." Samantha didn't look like she believed him but said nothing, slowing down her breaths until she was able to speak.
"It was a beautiful service." Even the clique felt forced. She gave him another sad look which he quickly avoided. Brian cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably. "I'm sorry man." He said as he clapped Wilbur on the shoulder. "It looks like the whole town made it." Wilbur scoffed again at the residents of Tomorrowland.
"They didn't know him." He responded. "It's always for show."
Sam looked taken aback before sighing. "I think they just want to," She paused as Wilbur looked at her. "pay their respects." He nodded but the look he gave was less than convinced. "I just think, never mind". She shook her head as Brian gave her a quick shake of the head. Samantha, ever the advocate for the people, knew when to stop talking.
"I'm gonna," she pointed over to where Franny was standing, Eloise on her hip. "go."
Both boys nodded and she gave Wilbur one last smile as they watched her walk away. Brian watched his best friend as his eyes followed the girl. He rolled his eyes. "You really good man?"
Wilbur turned his head to look at Brian. "I will be once we get out of these suits."
Samantha had made her way towards the Robinson family, usually loud and boisterous but now they all stood stoic.
Franny saw her coming and greeted her with a one-armed hug.
"Hi sweetie." She whispered. Sam smiled back at her.
"How are you doing?" She asked as she gave a small wave to Eloise. Poor baby has no idea what is happening.
"I'm okay sweetie." Franny grabbed her hand and gave it a short squeeze. "Do me a favor and get the boys. We're going to say one last goodbye."
Sam nodded and walked back towards the two boys who had found themselves looking at the numerous headstones.
"It's about time." She said as she motioned towards the casket.
"Right." Wilbur nodded. He had taken off his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves. Sam looked over at Brian before motioning to their friend who had found a particular tombstone interesting. 'He felt suffocated' Brian mouthed at Sam.
"C'mon Wil." She soothed as she grabbed his hand, gently leading him towards the rest of his family.
She always knew Wilbur's dad as a father figure in her own life. After her own father was fired Cornelius hired him as one of the product managers. In addition to that Samantha spent nearly everyday at the Robinson house, taking singing lessons with Franny and baking cookies with Lucille. They were her chosen family when her mother was driving her up the wall and her father was too busy with work.
She couldn't imagine what Wilbur was experiencing but she wished she could take away his pain. When her grandmother had died he stayed with her for weeks on end. She reached the point where she couldn't imagine being happy unless he was right beside her. Of course that grief had slowly faded and she went back to being herself, working on her photography and baking, all while honoring her grandmothers memory rather than being limited by her loss.
They don't deserve this. Sam had been with Wilbur when he got the frantic call from his mother. She remembered her heart dropping when she saw the look of pure panic on his face. He had jumped up so quickly she had fallen over from where they sat on the floor. He had run out of her house without any explanation but had called her later, explaining what had happened.
Sam and Brian stood off to the side and the Robinson family surrounded the grave sight. This was the intimate part of the funeral, family only, where they could mourn privately.
The duo looked around at the family. Sam looked away as Eloise started crying, the whole family looking over at the small child.
"Damn." Brian whispered to Sam as she took a deep breath.
"Tissue?" She asked and she held one out for Brian.
"I'm good." He responded as she took it for herself and wiped her eyes.
"Listen," Brian started. "I know Cornelius was like your second father and how much you cared about him but you can't do this."
"Do what?" Sam asked looking mildly offended as he motioned to her crying.
"Cry."
"Brian!" She yelled, shocked.
"No it's… I'm just saying, Wilbur needs us to be there for him and we can't be there for him if he's comforting you." To his credit Brian did look guilty for his sounding insensitive.
" I know." She muttered.
"Do you? Because right now your face looks like ," he stopped when he saw her glare.
"I'm sorry." He said. "I just know that Wilbur would put your well-being over his own and I don't want him to do that."
"Neither do I." Sam looked at Wilbur, who stood next to his mom, Lucille holding onto his arm on his other side. She wiped at her face one more time before sighing. "Neither do I."
A few minutes later the Robinson family, in addition to Sam and Brian, headed towards the estate. Sam's parents had arranged for a caterer and had set up the food so everything would be ready.
Walking through the door there was no one to greet the family. Sam looked for her parents but realized that they had left before the party had made it home. Carl, who usually rolled around serving food, quietly grabbed a platter and began circulating the room.
"Hi Carl." Sam greeted as the robot made its way towards the young adults. "I didn't get a chance to talk to you at the service." She explained. "How are you?"
"Well you know," Sam's eyes widened as she watched the robot cry. No tears came out of Carl's eyes but their eyebrows came together and mouth formed what she only describe as the face of agony.
"Oh no, Carl." She quickly stood up from the couch that her and Brian had sat on and wrapped her arms around the robot.
Soon Carl's crying eased and they looked at they girl. "Thanks kid." Sam gave a small smile as Carl held out some hors d'oeuvres.
"No thanks." She responded, smiling at the robot. She watched as Brian took multiple of the small sliders, smiling fondly as he dropped one on his lap.
"Why are we still here?" Brian asked as Sam sat back down.
"Wilbur asked us to stay, remember?"
"I know but isn't it a little like we're imposing. Wilbur has enough to deal with than entertaining his two friends."
Sam shrugged. "I'd feel bad leaving." It was a few more minutes of their back and forth before Wilbur found them.
"Let's get out of here." He announced leading the two away from the wake and towards one of their flying cars.
Wilbur turned to Sam, who had barely opened her mouth. "If you ask me if I'm okay one more time."
His veiled threat fell on deaf ears as Sam pulled him into a hug. He relaxed a little before wrapping his arms around her, trying to ignore Brian's curious gaze on them.
"You'll what?" Sam asked as she pulled away. Her green eyes were fixed on his.
"Let's go."
