Talia Potter wasn't an ordinary girl. She had spent her whole life jumping from care home to care home and quickly became homeless on the streets before she was 14. After a year of surviving the streets and making do with the hand she was dealt, her 15th birthday changed her life forever.
*Flashback*
She had just escaped a group of nasty addicts searching for anything to get them through their next high and ran into a busy street on the outskirts of London. Leaning against a wall and panting, she wiped the blood off of her hands and tugged her hair into a bun on her head. Pulling her jacket off of her shoulder, she glanced down at the lash gash that etched across her shoulder and growled as blood oozed out of it.
Crap. She thought, knowing this would need more than she could typically handle. It was then that she heard a low growl, glancing up her emerald green eyes met the large, dark eyes of a huge black dog. Gasping she backed out of the alley as quickly as she could before finally she turned and ran. Of course the dog caught up to her in seconds and pinned her down. She screamed as the mut grabbed her leg and pulled her into another back alley. She screamed as she was yanked but noticed that the dog was barely hurting her.
In seconds the dog had let her go, she squeezed her eyes shut, ready for the attack to begin.
"Open your eyes child." Talia gasped, scrambling back against the wall of the alley as her eyes flew open. A tall, thin man stood over her, his long straggly hair greasy and unkept.
"Wh…what do you want?" She hissed gripping her throbbing shoulder.
"I've been looking for you everywhere Talia." The man growled looking her up and down.
"How do you know my name?" She growled back flinching away from him as he edged closer once more.
"I'm Sirius. Sirius Black. I was a friend of your parents. Your real parents. You're a witch girl." Talia snorted before leaning her head back.
"I knew I shouldn't have pinched that pill. This must be one hell of a trip." She laughed, more to herself than the stranger in front of her. The man gave her a concerned look and knelt in front of her, his grey eyes meeting hers.
"This is no joke. Look." He replied, waving a stick of wood at her, and suddenly she felt the skin on her shoulder literally stitching itself back together.
"What the Hell?" She gasped, tracing her fingers over her perfectly healed skin.
"You have a spark child. Join me and I shall give you the life you should have had all along." Talia didn't even miss a beat before taking his hand, the disgusting streets around her fading into her past.
*One Year Later and 6 Weeks Later*
Once again Talia found herself alone in this world. Just over a year ago a strange man named Sirius Black had brought her back to this house and healed many of the scars she'd gained during her time on the streets. He had spent every single day with her teaching her all about the magical world. He had purchased her a wand and given her tutoring on all kinds of subjects. He was proud of her for how quickly she picked it all up and trained her in combat for a bit of additional fun. She back stronger, smarter and more determined than ever by her 16th birthday.
For Talia though, the biggest thing she'd gained over the last year was a father figure she'd never had. Sirius Black had told her all about her parents, Lily and James Potter. He told her that she had been under his care when her parents were killed and somehow her twin brother survived but once he was wrongfully arrested, she was placed into care. At first Talia had been angry that the whole world had protected her brother without trying to find her, but the more time she spent with Sirius, the less she cared. He was all she needed.
Until he left her too.
Just one month before her 16th Birthday he had hurried off one night, trying to save her dear brother who had found himself in trouble once again. From what Talia knew of him, that seemed to happen a lot. Except this time, her Sirius, the only person that had ever cared for her, the man who pulled her off the streets, never came back to her. Once again she was alone. Once again it was her brothers fault. She didn't blame Harry entirely, but her devastation over the loss of Sirius had made it harder for the two to bond. They had initially been introduced at Christmas but after Sirius' death, they had only managed to send letters back and forth.
A man named Dumbledore had told her the news. His voice calm and annoyingly understanding. She had cried, destroyed everything around her, and screamed until her voice was gone. The man waited with his half-moon spectacles and gave her a plan. He told her she could stay at Grimmauld Place until September. He had told her that she would join her brother at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a place Sirius had always talked highly of. Dumbledore had agreed to give her private lessons to further Sirius' tutoring.
So, her summer days had passed in a pit of depression, studying and loneliness. The only light in all her darkness had been letters from an unexpected friend. Hermione Granger, a muggle-born friend of Harry's who she had met at Christmas had been writing to her daily. Hermione had also been raised in the muggle world but unlike Harry Potter, she hadn't spent her magical life as the centre-of-attention, and Talia found that easier to connect to . The pair both loved reading, learning and understanding everything to do with magic so Hermione would often recommend new textbooks and magical facts to help Talia catch up with all she had missed.
Now she was all packed and ready to head to the station. A man named Remus Lupin, another family friend, would be collecting her soon and taking her to the station where Harry, his friend Ron, and Hermione would join her on the train to Hogwarts. Talia was nervous having never actually spent time in a school with her peers, but she also felt ready. Sirius had left her a locket with the Black family crest that she fiddled with nervously as she awaited Lupin's arrival. He had trained her well and she would do absolutely everything in her power to make him proud.
*Talia's P.O.V*
I checked my hair in the grubby mirror off the hall one more time. I'd never much cared for my appearance but Sirius had always told her that making a good first impression was important in the wizarding world. An impression could last a lifetime and with a surname like Potter, I had a lot to live up to. I'd straightened my long sleek black hair, and used the lightest bit of makeup to emphasise my natural features.
I was excited to see Hermione again today but my heart flipped at the thought of seeing Harry again. I could have spent the summer with them all at the Weasley's house, but at first I'd held too much anger. Part of me still did. I didn't want to blame him for it and I knew he loved Sirius too but if he didn't always try to handle problems without asking adults then Sirius would have never needed to go to the ministry that day. I knew Harry blamed himself for it too, Dumbledore had told me as much, but at least he still had the Weasley's to love him. I was left alone.
The sound of the door opening made me jump.
"Oh, hello Talia. I see you're ready." Remus Lupin's voice was tired and calm. He was kind. Life had been hard on him too. He didn't glance at me with pity like the others had, he was always understanding. I liked him. I could see by his half-glance around the dark hall that he too missed Sirius. They had been close. Sirius always spoke fondly of him.
"I am." I nodded curtly. Watching as Remus waved his wand and my bags vanished. Glancing around the house I took a deep breath as the fond memories of my year with Sirius floated through my mind. This house may not be perfect but it was the only place I'd ever called home. Taking a deep breath, I turned and left. Lupin offered a smile before holding his arm out to me as the house faded away behind us.
He apparated us to King's Cross station. Sirius had shown me apparition before but it never become any more pleasant. The Station was bustling with people. I'd never been good with crowds. Growing up the way I did, the shadows were my friend. I allowed Remus to lead me through the crowds and through the magical entrance to Platform 9 ¾ , I stared around in amazement at the platform packed with children squealing and running to their friends. Magic had never once failed to amaze me.
"Tali!" I turned just in time to see Hermione's bushy hair flying towards me. I allowed her to hug me. I normally hated hugs but Hermione was different. She'd been the only help I'd had since Sirius' death. True, that was largely my own doing, but I was grateful to her for not allowing me to push her away.
"Mione, I'm glad to see you." I replied, stepping back and glancing over her shoulder to see the Weasley's and Harry heading in my direction.
"I've missed you! You look well? How are you holding up? Your hair looks great! I can't believe you're coming to Hogwarts! I can give you my copy of Hogwarts a History. I've made a few notes in it too with the extra bits I've discovered. I wonder what house you'll be in? Hopefully Gryffindor but no matter what we'll always be here for you."
"Whoa Hermione, let the girl breathe." Ron laughed causing her to blush furiously. Everyone said their hellos before Harry and I were the last two left.
"Um Hi." He said quietly, nodding towards me but glancing towards the floor. He was paler than normal. I could see the toll Sirius' death had taken on him and I hated myself for enjoying it. It felt good to know it wasn't just me.
"Hi Harry. Good… uh good summer?" I asked, conscious of the many pairs of eyes watching our interactions.
"Yeh uh good thanks. I'm glad you're coming to Hogwarts. We can get to know each other more." He replied softly, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. I nodded but didn't respond. The loud whistle from the train pulled us out of the awkward situation and swept us up into many hugs and goodbye's with the Weasley's and Lupin before finally the train was pulling away from the station. Harry swiftly made his apologies and said he needed to check something and Hermione and Ron needed to attend a prefect meeting. Hermione apologised profusely and said that if they had any time, she'd tried to find me before we got to Hogwarts. I smiled telling her I didn't mind, I could read the copy of Hogwarts a History she gave me on the way. She smiled proudly, happy that there was someone who was as excited about the book as she had been. Once they were gone I shuffled down the corridor until at the very end of the train I found a compartment to myself. Clearly most people hadn't bothered walking this far. Slipping in, I pulled my knees up to my chest and opened the book Hermione had given me.
I was barely five pages in before I glanced up at the sound of the compartment door opening as three boys walked in. All three were tall with brown hair but the two at the back had short, straight hair with kind eyes but the one in the middle had darker hair that fell in loose curls atop his head. His brown eyes seemed dark and he had a scar running through his eyebrow and down his cheek. A smirk was plastered on all three of their faces as they strolled in and made themselves at home.
"Hello there Princess, mind if we join?" The middle one said, sitting directly opposite me.
"Looks as though I don't have a choice. I'm not your Princess who the hell do you think you are?" I snapped, annoyed at the intrusion of my peace. The two other boys snorted, glancing down at the floor at a pointed glare from the curly haired boy.
"I'm Mattheo Riddle Princess, and you are?"
